programme

Dear members of the UNECE Working Group on Environmental Monitoring and
Assessment and the Joint Task Force on Environmental Statistics and
Indicators and other contacts,

At the request of the Working Group, we are sharing with you a message sent
to the members of the UNECE Committee on Environmental Policy in March
calling for their support of environmental monitoring, assessment and
reporting in the UNECE region.

With kind regards

programme

Dear members of the Committee on Environmental Policy,

Following the successful launch of the 7th pan-European Environmental
Assessment at last year’s Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference, we
wish to tackle gaps in measuring and monitoring the environment in the
pan-European region, as identified in the assessment. We would also like to
ensure that the next pan-European assessment builds on more sound
foundations in terms of data availability and the use of modern
technologies, notably Earth observations.

To do so, we need your support.

How can you help?

a.. Encourage your colleagues to (i) participate in and contribute to the
activities and meetings of the Working Group on Environmental Monitoring and
Assessment and the Joint Task Force on Environmental Statistics and
Indicators; and (ii) participate in the development and review of guidance
materials such as the upcoming revised guidelines on environmental
indicators.
b.. Provide expertise in-kind, including national consultants, for
example, to (i) update the 20-year-old guide on Environmental Monitoring and
Reporting, for publication in 2024; and (ii) support ad-hoc expert groups to
monitor emerging themes and follow up on recommendations from the
pan-European environmental assessment.
c.. Contribute financially to the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
trust fund to support (i) the implementation of activities aiming at the
enhancement of environmental monitoring and information systems and
reporting and assessment in the region; and (ii) the participation in
meetings of experts from countries with economies in transition, access to
such meetings online, the hiring of consultants and, in due course,
initiation of an 8th pan-European Environmental Assessment.
To discuss these options, please contact Christine Kitzler, who manages the
UNECE Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Programme
(christine.kitzler at un.org).

The next session of the Working Group on Environmental Monitoring and
Assessment will be held on 2 and 3 May 2023 in Geneva and online. We would
welcome your participation. Please register here by 31 March 2023.
