Не ждите, что наука предложит вам спасительные варианты выхода из кризиса.

Те, кто предлагает и предложит - такие же "выродки", как мы с вами, как 
единомышленники Йохана Рокстрема и Уго Барди.

Те, у кого нестерпимо болит голова от созерцания происходящего.

Большинство научных достижений на сегодняшний день создано учеными, 
вышедшими на пенсию. Вспомните нашу последнюю статью о CO2: трое из четырех 
авторов - ученые, вышедшие на пенсию (включая вас!). Ученые, работающие в 
университетах или исследовательских центрах, не могут многого добиться в 
области инновационных исследований: если они являются лидерами группы, то 
почти 100% их времени уходит на поиск грантов и управление ими. И вы не 
получите грант на инновационные исследования, если не сможете доказать, что 
это никому не помешает и на самом деле ничего не изменит. Я не могу 
представить себе государственное грантовое агентство, которое финансировало 
бы нашу работу по выбросам CO2.

Тогда, если вы рядовой сотрудник академии, аспирант или ученый, не 
работающий на постоянной основе, вы участвуете в крысиных бегах, чтобы 
выжить, и вы не можете рисковать потерять все, занимаясь исследованиями, 
которые не окупаются или приносят результаты, которые не нравятся сильным 
мира сего.

Таким образом, инновационная наука остается в основном в руках пенсионеров. 
Но у них есть несколько проблем: одна из них заключается в том, что их "окно 
возможностей" ограничено по очевидным причинам. Может быть, 10 лет, может 
быть, чуть больше, если повезет. Тогда у них не будет ни денег, ни 
постдоков, ни поддержки. Они быстро обнаруживают, что исследования обходятся 
дорого: нужны специализированные приложения, которые вы не можете себе 
позволить как частное лицо. А когда вы выходите на пенсию, вы также теряете 
доступ к научной литературе. Изощренная жестокость этого заключается в том, 
что вы даже не можете скачать статьи, автором которых являетесь, поскольку 
вы бесплатно передали авторские права издателю. И теперь с вас берут 
серьезные деньги за то, чтобы вы прочитали то, что написали.

Самая большая проблема, таким образом, заключается в том, что ученых, 
вышедших на пенсию, считают сумасшедшими в поисках "теории всего". Иногда 
это правда. Представьте себе старых геологов, пытающихся объяснить, почему 
изменения климата не существуют или не вызваны деятельностью человека. Но 
это не всегда так. Иногда ученый на пенсии может найти время, чтобы обобщить 
и расширить знания, которые он накопил за всю свою трудовую жизнь. И 
результаты могут быть превосходными. Посмотрите на работу Ричарда Бакстона, 
цитируемую в моей последней статье. Он тоже ученый на пенсии! И он

кислородом, которое, я думаю, никто не стал бы финансировать просто потому, 
что оно не направлено на разработку лекарства или терапии, которые можно

To explain my point, most innovative science, today, is made by retired 
scientists. Think of our latest paper on CO2: three of the four authors are 
retired scientists (including you!). Scientists employed in university or 
research centers cannot do much in terms of innovative research: if they are 
group leaders, nearly 100% of their time is taken by grant seeking and 
management. And you don't get grant money for innovative research, unless 
you can prove it won't bother anyone, and will not really innovate anything. 
I can't think of a government grant agency that would fund our work on CO2.

Then, if you are the rank and file in the academy, post-docs or non-tenured 
scientists, you are running the rat race to survive, and you can't risk 
losing everything by embarking in a research line that doesn't pay, or 
brings results that the powers that be dislike.

That leaves innovative science mainly in the hands of retirees. But they 
have several problems: one is that their "window of opportunity" is limited 
for obvious reasons. Maybe 10 years, maybe a little more if they are lucky. 
Then, they have no money, no postdocs, no support. They quickly discover 
than research is expensive: you need specialized apps that you cannot afford 
as a private person. And when you retire, you also lose access to the 
scientific literature. The exquisite cruelty of this is that you can't even 
download the papers you authored, since you gave the copyright for free to 
the publisher. And now you are charged you serious money to read what you 
wrote.

The worst problem, then, is that retired scientists are considered crackpots 
in search of the "theory of everything." Sometimes, it is true. Think of old 
geologists endeavoring to explain why climate change doesn't exist or is not 
caused by human activity. But it is not always so. Sometimes a retired 
scientist can find the time to put together and expand the knowledge he/she 
has accumulated over a life of work. And the results can be excellent. Look 
at the work by Richard Buxton cited in my latest paper. He is a retired 
scientist, too! And he published a fascinating study on the mechanisms of 
brain oxygenation which, I think, nobody would finance simply because it is 
not aimed at developing a drug or a therapy that can be sold.

So, we would need to encourage these silverback scientists to do something 
good, not pooh-pooh them. But that's how the world is. So, I propose to band 
together and create something like a "silverback science patrol." The work 
on CO2 as a pollutant could be a starting point

            My point is that large brains are possible only in conditions in

CO2 in the atmosphere. It is a condition that Earth's ecosystem experienced 
only during the past few million years. And that is why we are here,

            Unfortunately, no matter how smart we think we are, we are dumb 
enough to be working at raising the CO2 concentration at levels at which the 
brain cannot be properly oxygenated. We may be "un-evolving" ourselves, back 
to times when there were no sentient being on Earth. The recently observed 
phenomenon of "global dumbing" may be a first indication of what's 
happening. Obviously, that makes even more urgent to stop emitting CO2 -- it 
is a problem additional to global warming, but perhaps even more worrisome.

            So, if you have some time, please take a look at my paper. For 
the time being, it is in the form of a preprint, and I am waiting from 
comments and criticism from others before I submit it to a scientific 
journal as a full-fledged paper. Your comments, suggestions, and criticism
