Subject: Living Earth CO2 as a Metabolic Poison

Dear colleagues,

after some delays for various reasons, our paper on CO2 as a pollutant (Mine, Phil Bierwirth's, Kuo Wei Huang's and John McIntyre's) has been published on a journal of moderate prestige, belonging to the Royal Society of Chemistry.

https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlepdf/2025/VA/D5VA00017C

I believe it is a fundamental paper because it turns on its head the current debate. It is not that CO2 doesn't cause global warming, but its negative metabolic effect may be more pressing, more important, and perhaps even more deadly. Just consider that none of our ancestors of the past several million years lived their whole life at the current concentration of 425ppm. And we keep increasing it. To say nothing about living in indoor spaces where concentrations are commonly much higher -- it is easy to have more than 1000--2000 ppm inside buildings, where we spent most of our life.

This paper goes straight against the current propaganda effort that aims at presenting CO2 as harmless "plant food". It is not a small thing; I had a friend of mine estimating the cost of the "CO2 coalition" campaign, and it has to be a few tens of million dollars. Not something you can hope to crack with a single paper and the effort of a few good-willed individuals. Yet, it is there, and it may have some effect. Actually, the first reactions in comments on LinkedIn have been a little "over the top" to say the least. And the best has to come. This paper will be deeply hated by all those people who reason in binary terms. Even some renown climate scientists seem to reason in these terms. If CO2 is a greenhouse gas, then it cannot be ALSO a metabolic poison.

So, I can see several destinies for this paper. Most likely, it will be ignored. There are chances that the PTBs will find some tricks to have it retracted -- retraction is the current form of censorship in science. If it goes viral, which I think is unlikely, but not impossible, it will go through the demonization machine, already well tested and experimented with "The Limits to Growth." In case it happens, you people have no idea of where I live, right? In the meantime, I'll be applying for a visa for Madagascar and camouflage myself as a lemur.

Seriously, take a look at the paper. It will take some effort and some diplomacy, but some ideas, eventually, tend to see the light and the small bunch of people who signed it are not alone. There are several groups working in this field: ostracized, ignored, defunded, and occasionally insulted. But truth has its ways to emerge, in the long run

Let me know your comments.

ATB

Ugo
