            Dear friends of the rainforests,

Nearly two years ago, the people of Ecuador sent a clear message to the oil industry in a referendum. By a large majority, they voted to leave the oil reserves beneath a section of Yasuní National Park in the Amazon region in the ground forever. The goal is to protect one of the most biodiverse rainforests on Earth, safeguard the Indigenous peoples who live there, and preserve the global climate.

However, the government of this South American country is refusing to honor the will of the people, citing short-term economic concerns. Oil production in Concession Block 43 (ITT) in Yasuní is set to continue for another five years, and the dismantling of the oil facilities is not planned for at least ten more years.

This inaction violates the rights of Indigenous peoples, nature, and democracy. Public pressure – within Ecuador and internationally – must now grow, and Ecuador’s Constitutional Court has a crucial role to play. According to the country’s constitution, referendum decisions must be implemented immediately and are legally binding.

On August 20, our Ecuadorian partners from the Yasunidos network will present the petition to the Constitutional Court. Please sign – your participation is vital and can make a real difference.

                  TAKE ACTION
                  Thanks for being involved,

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is supporting the financially troubled Spanish soccer champions FC Barcelona with more than €40 million. Shirt sponsorship is intended to present the country as “the heart of Africa” and as a tourist destination. Meanwhile, 75 percent of the DRC’s population subsists on less than two dollars a day.
