                       European Parliament resolution on the crackdown on 
the democratic opposition in Hong Kong

                              On Thursday, European Parliament approved by 
597 votes in favour, 17 against and 61 abstentions a resolution on the 
crackdown on the democratic opposition in Hong Kong

                              The resolution calls for the immediate and 
unconditional release of representatives of the democratic opposition and 
activists arrested in Hong Kong in the first two weeks of 2021, as well as 
all those previously detained on charges of subversion under the National 
Security Law for Hong Kong, included the prominent opposition figures Joshua 
Wong, Ivan Lam, and Agnes Chow.

                       Child labour 'robs children of their future

                              According to the International Labour 
Organisation, although child labour has decreased significantly over the 
past decade, one in ten children is still involved in harmful work, 
prompting a year-long effort to eradicate the practice.

                       EU urges Frontex to clarify pushbacks allegations

                              Ylva Johansson, European Commissioner for Home 
Affairs, has called on Frontex, the EU border agency, to clarify allegations 
of involvement in migrant pushbacks. Frontex is currently under 
investigation by OLAF, the EU's anti-fraud watchdog, over allegations of 
harassment, misconduct and illegal operations aimed at preventing migrants 
from reaching EU shores.

                       EU will have more powers in commercial disputes

                              The Parliament has adopted new rules allowing 
the EU to use countermeasures in trade disputes when arbitration is blocked. 
The strengthening of the so-called enforcement regulation allows the EU to 
protect its trade interests against partners who act illegally.

                       Human rights in the age of artificial intelligence

                              The German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs 
and the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection jointly 
organised with the Council of Europe a conference entitled "Human Rights in 
the Age of Artificial Intelligence - Europe as a Model for Setting 
International Standards in the Field of Artificial Intelligence".

                              The European Commission has presented a new 
strategy to promote an open, strong and resilient EU economic and financial 
system for the years to come. The aim is to enable Europe to play a leading

                       The arrest of Russian activist Aleksei NAvalny

                              Following the arrest of Russian opposition 
activist Aleksei Navalny, European Parliament and the UN High Commissioner 
for Human Rights call for his immediate release and urging the government to 
respect his right to a legal trial.

                       Switzerland urges voters to reject referendum on 
burqa ban

                              Swiss citizens will vote on a proposal to ban 
veils such as the burqa and niqab in public spaces in a national referendum 
on 7 March. The Federal Council and Parliament have recommended rejecting 
the initiative, saying the ban would have a serious impact on the country's 
tourism industry
