WHO signs vaccine deal with Pfizer as cases
near 100M

The World Health Organization has signed an
agreement with Pfizer that will provide the WHO's COVAX initiative with 40
million doses of coronavirus vaccine for distribution in poor countries. WHO
Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says vaccines could help
bring the rising global case count -- which is nearing 100 million -- under
control, but says that vaccine hoarding by wealthy countries will undermine
efforts to end the pandemic.Full Story: CNBC (1/22), Voice of America

                                Disruptions highlighted on International Day
of Education

                                United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres called on leaders around the world to make education for all a
priority in an address marking International Day of Education on Sunday. The
average student has lost two-thirds of their academic year because of
coronavirus school closures, and more than 800 million students around the
world face further pandemic-related disruptions to their education, UNESCO
reports.Full Story: CTV (Canada) (1/24), Associated Press of Pakistan

Agencies warn diseases spreading, aid short
in Tigray

                                Ongoing violence and instability in
Ethiopia's Tigray region have disrupted health care services and could
accelerate the spread of deadly diseases including the coronavirus, measles
and malaria, the World Health Organization warns. Continued conflicts in the
region mean the need for assistance is increasing faster than humanitarian
agencies can deliver aid, United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric
says.Full Story: Voice of America (1/23), Xinhua News Agency (China) (1/22)

Gender education gap slows Africa's female
entrepreneurs

Women in Africa who have completed their
secondary or tertiary education are significantly more likely to have access
to financial services and resources needed to start their own businesses
than those with only primary education, a report by the United Nations
Economic Commission for Africa says. The report urges leaders in Africa to
focus on making education accessible to all women and ending gender
discrimination that bars women from accessing credit or assets.Full Story:

                                Report: Aging dam infrastructure poses
serious threats

Many of the world's approximately 60,000
large dams are near the end of their useful life, and the changing weather
and more intense storms caused by climate change are putting more stress on
dams than they were designed to withstand, a study by the United Nations
University warns. Dam failures could threaten downstream populations and
have other social and environmental impacts, the study's authors say.Full
