WHO sounds alarm over highly infectious
virus variants

New, more infectious strains of the
coronavirus discovered in the UK, South Africa and Japan pose a serious
threat to hospitals already struggling with the burden of pandemic patients,
World Health Organization officials say. The agency this week reiterated its
call for vaccine producers to supply its COVAX initiative with shots to
distribute in poor countries, noting it hopes to begin vaccination campaigns
in February.Full Story: CNBC (1/11), Reuters (1/11)

term

                                United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres this week officially announced he will seek a second term as head

from UN

Authorities in Uganda have shut down access
to social media platforms, attacked journalists and detained critics and
opposition candidates ahead of the country's elections, drawing concern from
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who advises Ugandans to
uphold international human rights laws and avoid inciting hatred or
violence. UNAIDS chief Winnie Byanyima has also called on authorities to
respect the rights of LGBTQ voters.Full Story: UrduPoint (Pakistan)/Pakistan

The pandemic has not slowed the action of
extremist militant groups, which are using the crisis to fuel hatred based
