EU Commissioners want to hear what you have to say on destructive fishing before Monday. Demand a ban on the most harmful fishing practice for our ocean and climate. Bottom-trawling is happening in most marine protected areas and has to stop!

      Send an email
Hi,

EU Commissioners are preparing new rules that could stop destructive fishing. They want to hear what you have to say, but we only have until Monday to make that happen! [1]

After you and more than 150,000 signed the petition, they're listening more than ever. Let's make sure they spend days sorting through an inbox full of messages before they meet. Like that, they'll have no doubt about how many of us expect action to save our oceans.

Now, Oceans Commissioner Sinkevičius and Climate Action Commissioner Timmermans have a chance to make history: all they need to do is listen to science and people like us. They could finally ban this harmful fishing practice known as bottom-trawling in the upcoming Oceans Action Plan. [2]

But only if enough of us spare a second now to share our opinion before it’s too late. So, will you send a quick email to our EU Commissioners now to save our ocean? We’ve set up a page and made it quick and easy. All you have to do is click the button below to get started.

            Yes – send my message!

As you read this, industrial fisheries in European seas are using giant nets to scrape up the seafloor, killing sharks, dolphins and seals. Even in our most protected areas. [3]

And worse still, by tearing up parts of the seafloor, bottom-trawling is releasing about one gigaton of carbon annually - that’s the same as the entire global aviation industry! [4] It’s destroying the ocean's ability to combat climate change naturally. [5]

But now we have a chance to restore ocean health in Europe and protect the climate if we take action. Will you add your voice today to make sure EU Commissioners finally end destructive fishing?

            Yes – count me in!

Your messages will get the EU Commission to listen. To add to that, we’ll meet with the Oceans Commissioner in Brussels on Monday morning to tell him in person, right before he meets with other decision-makers.

Thanks to donations from this community, we’ll hand him a pop-up book that tells the story of how more than 150,000 people care about what’s at stake and how he can change the future of our ocean and climate. And to support the book, for an entire week, we’re taking over the front pages of Politico, the major political magazine in Brussels. [6]

Let’s stand together to demand an end to destructive fishing. Our EU Commissioners are waiting to hear from you: let them know it’s time to stop bulldozing our ocean. Email them now before Monday’s deadline.

Together we can save our ocean,
David (London), Olga (Bologna), Giulio (Rome), and the entire WeMove Europe team

P.S. EU seas are the most bottom-trawled in the world, impacting more than 50% of our entire seabed. [7] And this fishing practice is taking place inside 60% of our Marine Protected Areas - this is not “protection”! [8] Send our leaders a message now to ban bottom-trawling.

[1] The EU Commission has started a public consultation to ask for input. This is an official process for getting input from citizens, experts and interested people on new rules they’re working on. Their official consultation is long and technical, so we’ve created this short, easy form in the links in this emaill to make it more accessible. If you are really keen to do look through the entire consultation, see this link https://ec.europa.eu/oceans-and-fisheries/news/action-plan-conserve-fisheries-resources-and-protect-marine-ecosystems-your-opinion-counts_en
[2] In 2020 the EU released its Biodiversity Strategy for the next ten years. The strategy includes a commitment to halting the biodiversity crisis and developing an ‘Action Plan to Conserve Fisheries Resources and Protect Marine Ecosystems’, which we’re calling the Ocean Action Plan for short.
The Ocean Action Plan should limit the most destructive fishing gear and create a plan to transition to low-impact fishing. It has enormous potential to restore ocean health, but the details are important.

[5] The carbon released from bottom-trawlers contributes to ocean acidification and reduces the ocean’s ability to absorb the extra heat from the atmosphere. As a result, it cannot mitigate the impact of climate change, and the Earth will get warmer faster. https://climatekids.nasa.gov/ocean/
