Climate change is killing off manatees.
Hundreds of manatees are coming up dead in Florida. Sickly water
and climate change are to blame.

In the first three months of 2021, already more than 400
manatees have perished in Florida — an alarming number that's far outside of
any normal amount. These goofy-looking marine herbivores are beloved in
Florida and also classified as a threatened species by the U.S. government,
so this loss is heart-breaking. So far, scientists have identified two main
culprits for the dramatic increase in manatee deaths: climate change and
pollution — and both are only continuing to get worse.
Unpredictable and intense temperature changes are
contributing to manatees developing fatal sicknesses. Meanwhile, water
pollution is starving the animals to death. Sewage, agricultural, and urban
run-off — as well as habitat destruction — are all causing the mass die-of
of a main manatee food source: seagrass. On top of all this, humans keep
luring manatees to stay in unsafe areas by feeding them. What we think is
well-meaning is actually leading to these marine mammals' demise. There's
only one way to save the manatees before human-created climate change and
pollution kills them off for good. Florida must enact new laws to tackle
these death-dealing environmental problems.
Thank you,
Miranda

P.S. Manatees are dying off at unprecedented numbers, and
environmental catastrophe is to blame. Florida lawmakers must protect clean
water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions before things get worse.
