WHO, UNICEF plan equitable COVID-19 vaccine
distribution

The World Health Organization is calling for
equitable distribution of an eventual COVID-19 vaccine around the world and
noted that all 54 African countries have signed up to participate in COVAX,
a program to develop and distribute a vaccine the WHO is co-leading with
UNICEF. The health agency said widespread availability of a fully tested
vaccine is unlikely before mid-2021.Full Story: Reuters (9/4), Voice of

France has lent its support to a push by

UN chief urges solidarity, cooperation from
G-20

A lack of solidarity and coordinated
pandemic response between countries has hampered efforts to contain the
coronavirus, resulting in human rights infringements and exposing flaws in
social systems, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told
members of leading wealthy and developing nations this week. Guterres urged
G-20 leaders to work together on a science-based approach to easing pandemic
restrictions and protecting human rights and dignity.Full Story: The Straits

Pandemic will push 47M women into poverty,
UN says

The economic consequences of the pandemic
are affecting more women than men around the globe, widening the gender gap
with 47 million women expected to slide into poverty by 2021, UN Women says.
"The increases in women's extreme poverty ... are a stark indictment of deep
flaws in the ways we have constructed our societies and economies," says UN
Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.Full Story: Reuters (9/2)

UN chief reiterates call to prioritize green
recovery

The global community is facing a dual crisis
of the coronavirus and climate change, and the world must follow the lead of
countries using this moment to prioritize green energy in their recovery
plans, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told participants
in an online climate conference this week. "Our task is not to return to the
pre-pandemic world, but to build back better," he said.Full Story: The

Foreign parties supporting rival groups in
the battle for control of Libya continue to violate a United Nations arms
embargo to fortify their positions and keep weapons flowing into the
country, says Stephanie Williams, interim UN envoy for Libya. Military
action will not solve the conflict, and negotiations are needed to bring
peace to the region, Williams says.Full Story: The Associated Press (9/2),
