Greek police are firing teargas and smoke grenades at hundreds of people on the Turkey-Greek border fleeing war and poverty. And our EU leaders are heading there right now to support and strengthen these efforts. Let them know we want to protect people and stand for humanity.

Hi,

Shivering. Cold and wet. Families with children fleeing war and poverty are currently having tear gas and smoke grenades thrown at them by Greek police. [1]

Instead of being outraged, our leaders choose to support Greek efforts to keep its borders closed. Not only, they want to send additional forces from Europe’s border police, Frontex. [2]

Tomorrow, all three Presidents of the EU institutions will be travelling to the Greek-Turkish border to support Greece in their blatant disregard of international law -- for using violence and suspending asylum applications. [3] [4]

As they visit the border -- after a nice meal and in complete safety -- let’s make our voices heard and tell our leaders to protect people.

If we stay quiet, they will never know that there is a Europe of compassion out there, a Europe that doesn’t give in to fear. If we stand united in condemning all forms of violence against any human being maybe they will pause and change their strategy, but if we don’t speak up, they will never know.

Since it was founded, the EU stands for peace and humanitarian assistance. It’s no surprise that the Greek government deploying major military force and suspending asylum applications is not permitted by EU law nor international protocols.

With defiance,

David, Giulio, Olga and the entire WeMove Europe team

PS: While a child died over the weekend after a boat capsized off the Greek island of Lesbos, our EU leaders were proudly retweeting their support for Greece as they close their borders. [5] Sign and tweet to let them know we stand for humanity.
