Every week in Europe, 50 women are killed because of domestic
violence. But good laws can change whole societies -- and with our help,
this particular law could be a game-changer for women’s survival.
ACT NOW
Every week in Europe, 50 women are killed through domestic violence - killed
at the hands of their supposed loved ones. [1] That's one woman murdered
every three hours.
There is an international agreement that could be a game-changer for women’s
survival. It’s called the Istanbul Convention.
But some EU countries have been blocking its ratification for two years. [2]
And we have not been standing by in silence, and the new president of the
European Commission has said she’ll fight for the EU to ratify this
Convention. [3] Now it’s the Council (the institution that brings EU
countries together and has the power to influence) that has to be convinced.
In under a month, the Council’s Presidency will be taken over by Croatia,
which will be in charge of the agendas for meetings between EU countries and
will have the power to influence negotiations. This is the perfect moment to
remind them that for every week that they don’t push for the final
ratification of the Istanbul Convention, 50 more women will die.
Sign and join thousands of Europeans to end violence against
women!
Your demands will be heard. This Friday our partners, the European Women's
Lobby, will deliver our petition to a representative of the Croatian
government.
We want Ms Irena Andrassy to hear in a face to face meeting that hundreds of
thousands of Europeans call on Croatia to take advantage of its privileged
position, hosting the Presidency of the Council over the next semester, to
ensure the ratification of the Istanbul Convention is a priority.
She will know we are serious about our demands if she receives a petition
with a resounding number of signatures - that’s why we are asking you to
sign and then share the petition with as many people as you can. Let’s hit
the 200,000 mark!
Sign to end violence against women!
Violence against women goes beyond the daily killing of women: there’s also
psychological violence, sexual violence and rape, female genital mutilation,
sexual exploitation and trafficking, harassment and stalking. It’s
unacceptable that this is the everyday reality of many women across Europe -
and not just of the disempowered or most vulnerable.
Yes, 1 out of every 3 women in the EU has experienced physical and/or sexual
violence since the age of 15. Ultimately, violence against women affects
over 250 million women and girls.
Thanks to the hard work and struggle of those before us, the Istanbul
Convention was signed 2 years ago by the EU and its countries. It’s the best
possible existing tool to end violence against women, but unless ratified by
all EU member states, it cannot be implemented.
This Convention would give governments the power to provide legal support,
attention, and funding to efforts to prevent and punish violence against
women. Good laws can change whole societies. Raise your voice loud and
clear: sign the petition to be delivered on Friday, and share it with
everyone you know!
Yes, I’ll sign to have my voice heard on Friday
