сообщаем о трех главных и встречных экологических проблемах, получающих
недостаточно внимания и требующих незамедлительного действия. Во-первых,
мы приводим доказательства того, что будущие экологические условия
будут намного опаснее, чем считается в настоящее время. Масштаб угроз
биосфере и всем видам жизни— включая человечество—в действительности настолько
велик, что его трудно осмыслить даже хорошо информированным ученым.
Во-вторых, мы задаем вопрос: какая политическая или экономическая
система, или лидерство, в состоянии подготовится к предсказанным
бедам. В-третьих, данная критическая ситуация возлагает
особую ответственность на ученых говорить прямо и точно с
правительствами, бизнесом и общественностью. В особенности мы обращаем
внимание на неспособность оценить громадные проблемы по
созданию устойчивого будущего. Дополнительный стресс на здоровье и
благосостояние людей уменьшит нашу политическую волю по смягчению эрозии
экосистемных услуг, на которых зиждется все общество. Наука, указывающая на эти
проблемы, имеет прочное основание, но восприятие этих проблем в
обществе слабое. Без глубокого осознания и широкого
обсуждения масштаба этих проблем и грандиозности требуемых решений,
общество не сможет достичь даже самых скромных целей по достижению
устойчивости.</SPAN><BR
