The health of the planet and its inhabitants is under threat. The deterioration
of the global commons, that is, the natural systems that support life on Earth,
exacerbates shortages of energy, food and water and increases the risk of
disease, natural disasters, population displacement and conflict. In this
situation, our Commission defines the safe and fair boundaries of the Earth
System (ESB) and for the first time defines the “minimum level” of basic daily
standards of decent living per person per day: food consumption of 2,500
calories, 100 liters of water and 0.7 kWh of electricity, as well as a living
area of 15 sq.m. m and an annual transport route of 4,500 km. In conclusion, the
authors of the report identify the systemic transformations necessary to ensure
a secure and fair future. Our concept of the security and justice corridor
promotes research on planetary boundaries, as well as aspects of sustainable
development related to the fairness and sustainability of the Earth system. <A
