<DIV dir=ltr>Dear colleagues,<BR><BR>Hereby, <B>the Max Planck Institute for
Innovation and Competition</B> invites chapter proposals for a forthcoming
book exploring the evolution and future of National Innovation Systems across
Central Asia. The overall objective of this project is to develop a rich,
contextualised understanding of where Central Asian states stand in terms of
their vision and strategies for innovation, through a reflective sense-making
and solution-oriented exercise.
<DIV> <BR><B>Next steps:</B><BR>
<UL>
<LI>Submission of first drafts: 31 October 2025 (earlier submissions are
welcome).
<LI>Double-blind peer review: We will aim to secure two external reviewers per
chapter.
<LI>Exchange and discussion: Given the number of contributors, a fully
representative online conference does not seem feasible. Instead, we may
organise smaller group exchanges among those of you working on closely related
topics. </LI></UL><B>Guidance on substance: </B><BR>
<UL>
<LI>A clear problem statement, research question, and an intended contribution
to the discourse (in other words: Why write this chapter?) should be included
in the introduction.
<LI>The chosen methodology or analytical approach should be suitable for
answering that question.
<LI>There is no need to provide a detailed account of the general theory of
national innovation systems (NISs) – the introductory chapter will outline it
as an overarching framework. You may, of course, refer to and engage with NIS
theory in your analysis, but including a separate section on its general
premises would lead to unnecessary repetition across chapters.
<LI>The purpose of this volume is not to restate the mainstream version of an
NIS epitomised in the Global Innovation Index, which underlies current
innovation policy in many countries. Rather, the value of this publication
lies in identifying and analysing what is distinctive about innovation
processes in the countries of interest, or the region as a whole.
<LI>Some abstracts refer to the ‘current emergence’ of an NIS in their
countries as if it were a wholly new phenomenon.
<LI>We are not adhering to any single theoretical account of an NIS – instead,
as outlined in the concept note, it is understood as a universal framework
that invites us to think about innovation-related phenomena in a systematic
way and to identify the contextual factors relevant for interpretative and
normative analyses.
<LI>Please minimise generalities and stating the obvious. Remarks such as
‘more investment in R&D is needed’ or ‘closer university–industry ties
should be encouraged’ may be acceptable as background, but they cannot stand
as the chapter’s only or main conclusion. </LI></UL><B>Guidance on
formatting</B><BR>
<UL>
<LI>Word count: up to 5,000 words (including footnotes) for country-specific
chapters; up to 8,000 words for comparative chapters covering multiple
jurisdictions. These numbers are indicative only – in the end, substance
should take priority over length, and analysis over description and collection
of facts.
<LI>Reference style: Given the diversity of disciplines represented in the
abstracts, Ms. Daria Kim will double-check with the publisher regarding
the reference style requirements and get back to you as soon as possible.
However, for the first draft, you do not need to follow Springer’s house
style.
<LI>Language editing: A review by a language editor will be arranged at the
final stage on our side.</LI></UL>If you wish to discuss any questions, I will
hold online office hours on September 3rd and 9th from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
CET.</DIV>
