<P>One leak from the <STRONG>East African Crude Oil Pipeline
(EACOP)</STRONG> could poison the water of Africa’s largest lake
that 40 million people depend on for food, farming and their
livelihoods.</P>
<P><STRONG>The pipeline is an unmitigated environmental
disaster.</STRONG></P>
<P>With major insurance companies shunning the project because of
its dire impact - the list of climate-wrecking firms potentially
backing the project is getting smaller and smaller. <STRONG>And
without insurance, EACOP will remain a mere pipe dream</STRONG>
where it belongs.</P>
<P><STRONG>The good news is that it makes our job easier and
easier:</STRONG> our list of targets is getting slimmer every day
that passes. Relentless mobilisation from activists and communities
on the frontline recently made Munich Re rule out insuring this
disastrous project. <STRONG>People power works!</STRONG></P>
<P>Let’s send the message to all the other insurers who are tempted
to underwrite the pipeline: <STRONG>hundreds of thousands of people
around the world are watching them and public pressure is growing on
them like never before.</STRONG></P>

<P>The EACOP will be the world’s longest heated crude oil pipeline.
This massive pipeline would rip through the heart of Africa –
<STRONG>displacing communities and endangering wildlife</STRONG>,
like elephants, giraffes, lions and leopards. </P>
<P>Not only would it be grossly irresponsible to build it in the
middle of a climate emergency, it runs the risk of poisoning Lake
Victoria - Africa’s largest lake, putting 40 million people at risk.
<STRONG>Yet that’s exactly what French oil company TotalEnergies and
its insurers are trying to do.</STRONG></P>
<P>But the project relies on multiple layers of insurance for its
construction phase. And so far, <STRONG>TotalEnergies has failed to
find adequate insurance to move the project forward.</STRONG></P>
<P>Over 260 organizations are urgently trying to convince insurers
around the world to rule out supporting this disastrous project.
<STRONG>And we are nearly there.</STRONG></P>
<P>Last week, thousands of SumOfUs members joined a photo action on
social media to pressurize the US insurance broker, Marsh, to stop
brokering the pipeline. Since April, our joint efforts with
frontline groups and NGOs at #StopEACOP, have forced 8 insurers to
step away from the project, including Munich Re, Allianz and the
Lloyd’s syndicate Beazley.</P>
