crossed a threshold of no return: they are now listed as
extinct.</STRONG> The U.S.'s largest woodpecker, the
ivory-billed woodpecker, as well as Bachman's warbler, eight
species of freshwater mussels, two species of fish, one
species of fruit bat, and more have all crossed the veil into
the Other Side, permanently. <STRONG><A
href="https://www.care2.com/go/z/e/A8m_u/zXBz/dw_EO"><FONT
color=#006d7d>Worse still, scientists fear many more
endangered species could be about to follow in these same
ghostly, vanishing footsteps.</FONT></A></STRONG> </P>

scientists who spoke to <EM>The Washington Post</EM> are
calling "an accelerating rate of extinction" across the globe.
And it's no mystery why this acceleration is occurring, or why
these particular species went extinct. <STRONG>This is all
unambiguously due to habitat loss and climate change.</STRONG>
These 23 species are essentially the wild versions of a canary
in a coal mine. With their silence, they are signaling the
start of a terrifying new era of rapid extinctions, which is
rushing right at us. We must heed their now-quiet call.
