<P><BIG>Hi Vladimir,</BIG></P>
<P><BIG>By now we know that <STRONG>plastic is everywhere. </STRONG>It's not
just in our drinking water and oceans. <STRONG>It has made its way into our
fruits and vegetables too. </STRONG>[1, 2]</BIG></P>
<P><BIG>This is why we fought to ban single-use plastics, which are so harmful
to our planet and our health. And<STRONG> we won.</STRONG> But the
<STRONG>plastics industry is working hard to undo that win </STRONG>by
intervening in the final stages of the law.</BIG></P>
<P><BIG><STRONG>The way they’re doing that is pretty
sneaky. </STRONG>They’ve manipulated technical discussions on the
wording of guidelines, so that items like single-use packets of crisps can be
considered reusable, and bans on single-use plastics straws and cutlery could be
rendered completely ineffective. This would effectively cancel our
win.</BIG></P>
<P><BIG><STRONG>But we have a powerful decision maker on our side.
Vice-President of the European Commission </STRONG>and champion of this law,
<STRONG>Frans Timmermans, promised to be our ally.</STRONG> [3] It's time to
remind him of that promise so that once more he can face down the plastics
industry, who right now are hard at work behind the scenes.</BIG></P>

delivered our first petition calling for a ban on single-use

<P><BIG>With partners all over Europe, <STRONG>our community came together
around a huge petition to get the ban on single-use plastics passed. We
won</STRONG> thanks to hundreds of thousands of us taking action, tweeting at
decision makers (including Timmermans), emailing MEPs, and donating so
that we could plaster billboards all over Brussels.</BIG></P>
<P><BIG><STRONG>We thought we could move on </STRONG>and work on building a
Europe that values care, protecting the climate and so much more.</BIG></P>
<P><BIG><STRONG>But EU laws can take a long time before they’re applied in
practice. </STRONG>Once decided, experts need to define how to make them work
across all EU countries. These technical discussions are where, <STRONG>time and
time again, industry lobbyists swoop in to make the laws work for their
agenda.</STRONG></BIG></P>
<P><BIG>Right now, they’re trying to get lots of plastics exempt from the law,
meaning one plastic could easily be replaced with another, making the ban
useless. We can’t let that happen. <STRONG>This is where we can show the
plastics industry we are paying attention,</STRONG> we are coming together and
using our power.</BIG></P>
