owner's worse nightmare: your pet is kidnapped — and then
murdered and eaten. <A
href="https://www.care2.com/go/z/e/A4aS2/zVfj/b04p6"><FONT
color=#006d7d><STRONG>It sounds too horrific to be true, but
that's exactly what is happening in
Vietnam.</STRONG></FONT></A> </P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 2em">In a break from historical
precedent, Vietnam has a growing number of pet owners who have
dogs and cats as companions, and not for consumption. <A
href="https://www.care2.com/go/z/e/A4aS2/zVfj/b04p6"><FONT
color=#006d7d><STRONG>These pet owners live in constant fear
of having their companion stolen by local dog or cat thieves,
whose sole mission is to sell their pet to a butcher for quick
cash.</STRONG></FONT></A></P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 2em">The lack of animal cruelty laws
in Vietnam has led to human lives being lost as dog thieves
attack pet owners, resulting in pet owners retaliating,
causing loss of life on both sides. <A
href="https://www.care2.com/go/z/e/A4aS2/zVfj/b04p6"><FONT
color=#006d7d><STRONG>Police are limited in serving justice
because of the lack of animal cruelty
laws.</STRONG></FONT></A></P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 2em">Countless serious health
outbreaks of disease and illness have also been attributed to
Vietnam's dog and cat meat trade, resulting in many deaths.
Life-threatening illnesses such as rabies, cholera and
trichinellosis remain a constant danger to local residents and
international tourists. Such risk also severely compromises
Vietnam's commitment to eradicate rabies by the year 2020.</P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 2em">But we can't give up yet. Dogs
and cats are companion animals and not food items. <A
href="https://www.care2.com/go/z/e/A4aS2/zVfj/b04p6"><FONT
color=#006d7d><STRONG>Will you help by asking the President of
Vietnam to protect animals and, by extension,
humans?</STRONG></FONT></A></P>
