the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, many white
Americans have been asking: "What can we do to help?" While
we've heard many examples of what we as individuals can — and
should — be doing, there is <EM>also</EM> a step we need to
demand our government take. <STRONG><A
href="https://www.care2.com/go/z/e/A69Ks/zWkh/b04p6"><FONT
color=#006d7d>And that's reparations.</FONT></A></STRONG> If
you need a visual to help drive the point home, look at some
of the most symbolic buildings in this country. The U.S.
Capitol Building. The White House. The <EM>original</EM> White
House, before it was burnt down in 1812. Wall Street.
<STRONG>Each one of these momentous constructions — as well as
countless other hallowed halls, our economy, and even our
global industrial might — were built by the labor of enslaved
peoples.</STRONG> </P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 2em">In exchange, what did the U.S.
provide? Underfunded and overcrowded schools, still plagued by
class and racial segregation. Devastating inequality and
poverty. A constant onslaught of violence from police. Soaring
levels of incarceration. Comparing economic measures to their
white counterparts, Black Americans are worse off almost
completely across the board. <STRONG>This country took nearly
everything away from enslaved people — their freedom, their
wealth, their labor, their families, their lives.</STRONG> We
can't take back our history, but we can take steps to make the
future less grim. <STRONG><A
href="https://www.care2.com/go/z/e/A69Ks/zWkh/b04p6"><FONT
color=#006d7d>Sign the petition to tell the U.S. Congress to
fund reparations for African Americans, and commission
research into how best to implement this
policy!</FONT></A></STRONG> </P>
