<P><STRONG>You and I were that close: Europe’s first ban on
glyphosate was to come into effect on January 1</STRONG>. You and I
were already celebrating -- together with 82% of Austrians, who
support the ban. But then everything changed when <STRONG>Austria’s
government refused to implement the law in the last minute</STRONG>.
Their excuse: a “legal technicality.”</P>
<P>In the months before, <STRONG>Bayer-Monsanto and powerful
agricultural lobbies piled massive pressure onto the Austrian
government</STRONG>, claiming a glyphosate ban would open Austria to
costly lawsuits. <STRONG>And now it was their turn to
celebrate.</STRONG></P>
<P>But we couldn't just sit back and let Bayer-Monsanto win. A few
weeks ago, Austria's new government was sworn in -- and
<STRONG>SumOfUs members around the world sprang into action, to
remind the politicians that banning glyphosate should be a top
priority</STRONG>.</P>
<P><STRONG>Thousands of SumOfUs members chipped in to put an ad on
the front page of Austria’s biggest and most influential
newspaper</STRONG> with two million daily readers -- in a
country of eight million. You called on the newly elected chancellor
Kurz to listen to the Austrian people and finally implement the
glyphosate ban.</P>
