Tell Europe to Stand Strong on Its Plan to Require Zero-Emissions Vehicles and to Fight Climate Change Sign Now Powerful corporations have done it again. Across the world, many of us had celebrated when the European Union (EU) originally announced it was going to fight against climate change in part by banning companies from selling new fossil fuel-based cars in 2035. But, naturally, the auto industry and dirty energy corporations hated this plan. And now, it seems, they have successfully pressured the EU to soften this regulation. The Earth is warming up at a faster and faster pace. Hurricanes are worsening. Floods and droughts and wildfires are sweeping across our planet. Experts with the UN have warned that we may already have hit the global warming tipping point. We do not have any time left to be tentative about fighting climate change. We MUST insist on strong, full measures here to protect the entire globe! Luckily, this recent change shows the EU is susceptible to pressure. That means that we can also exert our influence here and convince the EU to do the right thing. Let's start the New Year off strong with a climate change victory! Sign the petition to demand that the European Union stand strong and maintain its original plans to prohibit sales of new diesel and petrol cars! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. In a landmark decision announced at COP30, the country voted to protect 100% of the Amazon rainforest within its borders. This decision blocks new oil, gas, and large-scale mining projects across the entire region. Colombia represents just 7% of the Amazon, yet it chose to protect all of it, proving that bold leadership is possible even in the face of economic pressure. Colombia has shown another path is possible: one rooted in environmental justice, respect for Indigenous peoples, and a commitment to life over extraction. Sign now to demand that every country in the Amazon basin follow Colombia's lead and protect their share of the rainforest. The Amazon regulates rainfall across South America, stores massive amounts of carbon, and supports Indigenous communities and 10% of the planet's known plant species. But through it all, this movement rose to meet the moment, pushing for accountability, defending human rights, and challenging the systems that put profit over people and planet. So now, let?s look back on twelve months of resistance, courage, and impact ? a year powered by all of us, together. The Year We Fought for Human Rights Shifting Europe?s Political Landscape: At a moment of profound global crisis, Ek? members united in solidarity. Across Europe, our movement helped drive unprecedented pressure to suspend the EU?Israel Association Agreement. Polling we commissioned in Italy showed overwhelming public support, generating major headlines and prompting a shift in Prime Minister Meloni?s stance. In Denmark, a full-page Ek? ad urging the Prime Minister to ?choose the right side of history? was followed days later by Denmark announcing its support for trade suspension and new sanctions. Thanks to Ek? members, these major breakthroughs have reshaped the political debate. Exposing Maersk?s Role in Genocide: Ek? members helped force a breakthrough in corporate accountability by pushing Maersk to stop shipping goods to illegal Israeli settlements. The UN had named the company in an expert report on the ?economy of genocide,? and Ek? members amplified the pressure: filing a hard-hitting shareholder resolution, sending thousands of emails, and funding bold ads during Maersk?s AGM, making it impossible for Maersk to hide its role in genocide. Challenging EU Leadership on Palestine: As public outrage grew over the EU?s failure to act on Gaza, Ek? members mobilised at lightning speed. Working closely with MEP Manon Aubry, we drove thousands of calls into MEPs? offices in under 48 hours, urging them to support a no-confidence motion against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. 72 MEPs signed on, enough to formally submit the motion. While it ultimately failed to pass, it showed von der Leyen how close she is to getting sacked for her corruption and loyalty to war criminals and forced her to propose, for the first time, the suspension of the EU-Israel trade deal. Forcing AXA to Divest: After six years of sustained campaigning, Ek? members helped win a monumental victory: AXA fully divested from weapons manufacturers supplying Israel?s assault on Gaza. And Ek?'s campaign report on AXA was featured in the new UN special rapporteur's report. This is one of the largest financial wins in the fight for accountability, made possible by persistence and people power. The Year We Built the Future, Responsibly Protecting AI for the Public: This year, our movement made it clear: the future of AI must serve people, not private greed. When Big Tech tried to refashion OpenAI for profit, our community mobilised. We launched a bold, superhero-themed ad campaign targeting Attorneys General in California and Delaware, plastered flyers outside their offices, lit up Times Square with a towering Sam Altman billboard, and ran a digital ad storm following OpenAI?s board members wherever they went. Even as OpenAI pushed ahead with its for-profit restructure, our member pressure forced major concessions: an OpenAI board member must now meet every six months with California Attorney General Rob Bonta to report on progress toward the company?s non-profit mission, and board member Zico Kolter, head of the safety and security committee, now holds the power to halt new product launches if there are safety concerns?a direct check on runaway tech before the damage is done. And we?re not letting up. We?ve already begun holding OpenAI to account post-restructure by exposing how its new video generation tool, Sora 2, allows teens to generate and view violent and racist content. We sent these findings directly to the Attorney General?s office and briefed the press, including Rolling Stone, sending a clear signal: we are watching, and OpenAI must prove it is putting humanity over profit. Challenging Microsoft?s Role in Genocide: When Microsoft?s cloud and AI systems became embedded in Israel?s military operations, we helped expose the company?s role. Together with Microsoft workers, we co-filed a shareholder resolution backed by 58 investors ? an unprecedented number, and then received about a quarter of the vote from shareholders, which is exceptionally strong for a first-time resolution. We also advanced a global legal strategy, submitting a GDPR complaint to the Irish data protection regulator, and preparing avenues for International Criminal Court complaints. Our movement made Microsoft a central target in the fight against tech-enabled war crimes. Exposing Tech?s Harm: In 2025, Ek? members pushed some of the world?s most powerful tech companies to face the consequences of their actions. We exposed how Meta and X profit from extremism and war ? approving ads that fund Israeli military gear tied to war crimes and allowing far-right campaigns that spread genocidal rhetoric. We delivered our findings directly to EU regulators, strengthening and expanding investigations into Big Tech?s failures. And our pressure is already paying off: Elon Musk was just hit with a ?120 million fine under one of these investigations. The Year We Protected the Wild Saving Dolphins in Mexico: A heartbreaking video of Mincho the dolphin collapsing during a forced performance sparked national outrage and together with partners, Ek? members helped turn that outrage into real change. We pushed authorities to shut the tank down and then we fought for a national ban on dolphin captivity. Together, we helped win the Mincho Law, ending dolphin torture across Mexico. Putting an EU Octopus Ban on the Agenda: Ek? members helped make history in Brussels by supporting the EU Parliament?s first-ever policy event calling for a ban on octopus farming. Scientists, lawyers, researchers, civil society groups, and MEPs came together to map the legal pathways to stop this industry before it begins. We hand-delivered thousands of signatures directly to the lawmakers leading the charge. This is a major step toward a Europe-wide ban, and with our partners at Eurogroup for Animals, we?ll keep going until it becomes law. Defending Donkey Lives in the United States: Our movement helped reintroduce federal legislation to ban the brutal donkey-skin trade in the U.S. Together with our coalition of partners, Ek? members powered advocacy days on Capitol Hill where our partners met directly with House Representatives, and ran nationwide digital ads that lawmakers could not ignore. Thanks to this collective pressure, the bill is back on the table and gaining real momentum. Challenging Horse-Blood Cruelty in Iceland: Ek? members helped shine a global spotlight on Iceland?s horse-blood farms. Alongside the Animal Welfare Foundation and our Icelandic partners, we staged a powerful ?bloody? protest at the Icelandic Parliament and met with the Minister of Industries to urge the government not to renew Isteka?s licence. The action was covered by major media outlets across Iceland. Together with our partners, we are mobilising public outrage, amping up political pressure, and forcing this cruelty into the open. The Year We Challenged Planet-Wrecking Power Pressuring Swiss Re: Together with Public Eye, Ek? members pushed one of the world?s largest insurers to strengthen its environmental and human-rights safeguards in Brazil. Thousands of us signed the petition, which we delivered directly at Swiss Re?s AGM in Zurich ? even when executives tried to avoid receiving it. Weeks later, Swiss Re confirmed updates to its ESG risk processes for Brazil, integrating stronger protections for Indigenous territories and conservation areas. It?s a modest but meaningful shift ? and a sign that even global financial giants feel the pressure when people act together. Taxing Luxury Pollution: Working with the Global Solidarity Taskforce, Ek? members helped push governments to back a levy on private jets and luxury flight tickets ? a policy designed to make the world?s wealthiest polluters finally pay. Ek? members flooded ministries with messages. And days later, France, Spain, and others publicly backed this groundbreaking proposal. Blocking Environmental Rollbacks in Brazil and Taking the Fight to COP: When Brazil?s Congress passed a bill gutting environmental protections, letting oil and gas companies self-approve drilling, the Ek? community mobilised fast. We launched a rapid-response campaign and delivered our petition straight to the Presidential Palace in Bras?lia. The pressure paid off: President Lula da Silva vetoed key sections of the bill, stopping some of its most dangerous provisions. We then took the fight to the global stage. On the eve of COP30, Ek? lit up the Rio de Janeiro skyline with a massive projection calling on world leaders to defend the Paris Agreement. Alongside Indigenous leaders from the Alian?a pela Volta Grande do Xingu, we staged a powerful river action on Guajar? Bay demanding an end to the extractive industry in the Amazon. And inside the negotiations themselves, we transformed COP?s massive globe into a direct call on President Lula to reverse oil drilling in the Amazon ? backed by our poll showing 61% of Brazilians oppose drilling in the Amazon basin. From Bras?lia to the Amazon to the heart of COP itself, our movement forced this fight into the spotlight. This has been a year defined by resistance, courage, and impact ? month after month, campaign after campaign. A year that shows how powerful a global community can be. As we step into 2026, we carry this momentum with us. The systems we?re challenging are vast, but so is the force we?ve built together. If this year proved anything, it?s that the Ek? movement is ready for whatever comes next ? and ready to win. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JANUARY 2, 2026 The Last Stand JUST AFTER DAWN on a cold morning in December 2024, explosions tore across the volcanic hills near the village of Sahwet Balata in southern Syria?s Sweida governorate (an administrative unit similar to a province). It was one of several Israeli airstrikes that week, part of a broader campaign targeting sites across the country. Villagers awoke to the thunder of collapsing concrete and the sight of smoke rolling through an oak-covered ridgeline as Israeli missiles flattened bunkers at a military base and peeled open a munitions depot with surgical precision. For years, the base, which includes an old oak grove, had been guarded by Syrian troops and therefore avoided by locals and loggers alike. In a province where many forests were stripped for fuel and profit over 13 years of protracted civil war, the outpost had created an unlikely sanctuary for one of the last intact oak stands in the region. When the bombs landed, no civilians were hurt. Against the odds, the trees survived as well, their twisted trunks silhouetted against a dusty sky. Beside them, a rusting tank lay tilted on its tracks ? abandoned when government forces fled days earlier, following the overthrow of Syria?s former dictator, Bashar al-Assad. The strikes marked a turning point for the region. With Assad?s army withdrawn, a power vacuum emerged ? quickly filled by local militias, spiritual leaders, and improvised civic groups. Instability deepened, and so did uncertainty about what would come next. Locals feared that without some level of protection, the oak grove at the abandoned base would fall to loggers. So villagers organized armed patrols, setting up watches to keep intruders out. One year on, despite worsening economic and humanitarian conditions, some locals are still taking shifts to protect the grove, determined to defend it. ?We need firewood too,? said Youssef, a farmer in his forties who volunteers there regularly and asked to be identified only by his first name due to safety concerns. ?But if we cut these trees, what?s left? We?ve already lost enough.? Reporter Robert Bocciaga details the vast toll that years of wartime and post-war logging have taken on southern Syria?s forests, and profiles the dedicated land defenders who have preserved one of the region?s last remaining oak groves. That includes Chevron, the only US oil company currently operating in Venezuela. How Chevron responds could either spell the end of Venezuelan sovereignty, or stop Trump?s disastrous plan in its tracks. Trump talks a big game, but doesn?t always follow through. We can still end this invasion before it escalates further, but only if there?s overwhelming pressure on Chevron to reject the plan. Sign the urgent petition to Chevron: respect Venezuela's sovereignty and reject Trump?s plan. Venezuela?s untapped oil reserves may appear as dollar signs to Donald Trump, but oil executives might not necessarily see it that way. Oil prices dropped 20% in 2025 ? the lowest they have been since 2020. Creating more supply right now might not entice oil companies as much as Trump thinks ? especially in Venezuela where the infrastructure is falling apart and will require massive investment to repair. That, alongside the legal ramifications of drilling and processing oil alongside an illegal invasion could very well discourage oil companies from going along with Trump?s vision. But the Trump effect is powerful, with governments and industries worldwide kowtowing to his greedy, divisive politics. So as Chevron and other oil companies decide how to respond - it?s crucial that we build a huge people-powered outcry. Tell Chevron and other oil companies: reject Trump?s plan. We?ve campaigned against Chevron before, and we won. Emily Atkin Jan 7 READ IN APP Source: Getty Images I hate conspiracy theories. I always have. As a journalist, they?re usually the thing I?m pushing back against. And yet, for a few years now, I?ve found myself saying something slightly heretical on panels and in conversations with other reporters: we need to start engaging in more overtly conspiratorial language. Because the actual story of climate change?the one we?ve reported exhaustively?is one about coordinated power, deliberate deception, and a bought-off government that repeatedly acts to promote an industry that is poisoning humans and the environment for profit. It just so happens to be a real conspiracy. The Trump administration?s recent invasion of Venezuela has put this conspiracy at the top of the news cycle. Trump framed the attack explicitly as an oil play, bragging about handing Venezuela?s oil infrastructure to U.S. companies. He said he privately briefed oil executives in advance of the attack, but did not inform Congress. He made clear that if U.S. companies were hesitant to enter Venezuela, U.S. taxpayers would step in to shoulder the financial risk. These statements strip away every remaining excuse for decorum. When a president deploys military might and taxpayer dollars to expand Big Oil?s power, journalists and climate advocates shouldn?t be afraid to say why that?s really happening?or to use the kind of language that makes it finally click in people?s brains. If there were ever a moment to embrace climate conspiratorial language, it?s now. If we don?t, we?ll miss a rare chance to show the public who the government really works for, and who pays the price. Here?s how I?d put it, if anyone needs a hand. You don?t ever need to pay for HEATED?it?s free. But if you have the means, paid subscriptions keep us alive and independent. Upgrade to paidA climate script for the conspiracy-minded You may think that the biggest climate conspiracy is chemtrails. You?d be wrong. But climate-altering chemicals are being dumped into the atmosphere at an astonishing rate. And the government is actively trying to cover up what?s happening, why it?s happening, and who it hurts. Airplanes aren?t the ones releasing world-changing amounts of climate-altering chemicals into the sky. Fossil fuel companies are. Fossil fuel operations are notorious for emitting massive amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, mainly carbon dioxide and methane. Just look at these graphs showing how much heat-trapping gas has accumulated in the atmosphere over time. A NASA graph, since removed by the Trump administration, shows that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (blue line) has increased along with human emissions of carbon dioxide (gray line) since the start of the Industrial Revolution. A NASA graph shows a rise in atmospheric methane concentrations since the year 1010. The U.S. government is actively trying to cover up these numbers. Since taking office, Trump has proposed shutting down the country?s longest-running carbon dioxide monitoring station. He?s secretly directed NASA employees to draw up plans to destroy two satellites that monitor global carbon dioxide levels. And he?s moved to end the program that requires fossil fuel companies to track and report greenhouse gas emissions from more than 8,000 facilities. The government has also been working overtime to cover up the massive harm this pollution causes. Trump has altered or deleted nearly every federal scientific report and web resource that?s come out in the last two decades showing that climate change is killing people, costing money, and making us less safe. He says it?s because all the studies are flawed and alarmist. Really? All of them? Every single one? The real reason the government is doing this is simple: Because it?s bought and paid for by Big Oil, the most profitable and powerful industry in the world. Before the election, Trump promised oil executives he would give them whatever they wanted in exchange for campaign support, floating a $1 billion price tag. How much the industry actually gave is impossible to know, thanks to dark money and opaque PACs. But from what we can see, Big Oil spent $219 million to influence the 2024 election, with at least $75 million going directly to Trump?s campaign and affiliated PACs. Eighty-eight percent of oil and gas money went to Republicans. And now, the government is deploying the U.S. military to help the industry dump even more of these climate-altering chemicals into the atmosphere. Trump explicitly stated his intention for the U.S. to control Venezuela?s oil. He laid it out plain as day: ?We?re going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country.? Trump didn?t tell Congress about the Venezuela attack before it happened. But he did claim to tell oil executives. Let that sink in. The president reportedly informed private oil companies about a military invasion before informing the people?s elected representatives. So who does the government work for, exactly? The oil industry has tried to deny receiving advance notice prior to the invasion?but only through anonymous sources. To this I remind you: Oil companies are notorious liars. They spent decades lying about climate change, burying their own research showing fossil fuels were destroying the planet, and funding disinformation campaigns to confuse the public. If they really didn?t speak to Trump, why don?t they say it loudly and proudly? Now, plenty of people have correctly pointed out that it will be difficult and expensive for U.S. oil companies to take over Venezuela?s oil. But that?s much less of a problem when the government works for you. After industry sources told CNN that oil companies ?were reluctant to commit to reinvesting? in Venezuela, Trump immediately fell over himself to offer to help them?with taxpayer money, of course. Trump said oil companies rebuilding Venezuela?s infrastructure will ?get reimbursed by us, or through revenue,? with the U.S. government potentially subsidizing efforts by energy companies to rebuild the country?s oil industry. Oil companies are trying to publicly act like they don?t want Venezuela?s oil. But here?s what?s indisputable. Chevron?s stock soared as much as 10 percent after the invasion. Exxon and ConocoPhillips shares rose around 3 to 4 percent. Oil service companies like SLB, Baker Hughes, and Halliburton jumped between 4 percent and 9 percent. And U.S. refiners Marathon Petroleum, Phillips 66, PBF Energy, and Valero Energy were up between 3.4 percent and 9.3 percent. Another thing that?s indisputable: Venezuela?s new acting president, Delcy Rodr?guez, is the country?s oil minister. She?s long been the go-to contact for senior oil executives, with strong ties to Republicans in the oil industry who actively pushed for her to lead post-Maduro Venezuela. I?m sure that?s just a crazy coincidence. Perhaps all of this could be defensible if the outcome for ordinary Americans were actually positive. Trump insists it will be?that oil expansion means jobs, security, and prosperity. That claim is the heart of the conspiracy. It?s not that Trump and the oil industry are working together; that part is in plain sight. It?s that the public is being told this partnership exists for our benefit, when in reality it exists to preserve fossil fuel dominance in a world where that dominance is threatened by people simply understanding the truth?that oil and gas pollution is transforming the climate, making us sicker, poorer, and less safe. That?s why Trump works to obscure emissions data, suppress climate science, and discredit anyone who explains the harm. It?s why he?s willing to spend taxpayer money, deploy military force, and rewrite foreign policy. Not because any of this serves the public interest, but because all of it serves the same goal: keeping fossil fuels flowing, even as the scientific case for transitioning away from them becomes overwhelming. And doing that requires a public that is less informed, more economically strained, and easier to distract?too busy coping with rising costs and mounting crises to demand a transition that would reduce pollution, lower long-term costs, and make wars over energy unnecessary. So no, you don?t need to worry about chemtrails. You need to worry about who controls energy?and what they?re willing to do to keep it that way. HEATED is a reader-supported publication. Europe?s wild bees are in a death spiral ? and in the next few days the EU could make it much worse. The European Commission is proposing changes that would allow pesticide approvals to be granted indefinitely ? with no mandatory safety reviews and no requirement to consider new scientific evidence on the harmful impacts of the chemicals in these products. If this goes through, Bayer?s toxic chemicals could stay in the market forever!! Unless we stop it. If enough of us donate in the next 24 hours, we can launch a rapid-response campaign targeting the Commissioners and key officials before they finalize it ? including legal research, an impact assessment, and an investigation into contacts between European Commission officials and the pesticide lobby. Without them, we would lose apples, almonds, tomatoes, strawberries, and countless other foods we rely on. Their survival is our survival. And toxic pesticides are decimating whole populations of them. A new official report shows that in the last decade the number of wild bee species at risk of extinction has more than doubled. The Commission?s proposed changes would accelerate their deaths, eliminating the mandatory renewal process, scientific assessment, and safety reviews for some of the most dangerous chemicals that are in use across Europe. It would be the biggest rollback on pesticide protections the EU has ever seen and cause untold harm to pollinators, nature and our health. Right now, the pesticide industry is working hard to rush this through before the public catches on. They have deep pockets and powerful connections, but we can still stop it ? if we move fast. We have only a few days to influence what happens next. If we raise enough in the next 24 hours, we can act quickly and confidently to the work and reach decision-makers before our window of opportunity closes. Millions of us helped win a Europe-wide ban on bee-killing neonicotinoids and forced some of the world?s biggest pesticide companies to pull their products from the market. Now the threat is even more dangerous. Decades of progress could be wiped out overnight. Vladimir, this is a defining moment for bees and for the laws that protect all of us from toxic pesticides. Sign Now In a hard-won victory for animal welfare, England just banned boiling lobsters alive! For years, experts and animal rights activists have worked tirelessly to get legislators to understand: crustaceans feel pain, and boiling them alive is literally a form of torture. That's why its so heartening that the brutal practice has been banned in England, following in the footsteps of Norway, New Zealand, and Switzerland which have also outlawed live lobster boiling. As it stands, however, the new animal welfare package only applies to England, not the entire United Kingdom. This means that lobsters in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland will still face painful, agonizing deaths. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JANUARY 9, 2026 Diet for a Healthy Planet There?s usually a lot of noise about how to improve ourselves around the start of the new year, and for better or for worse, much of it has to do with our bodies. Resolutions around exercise, physical well-being, and healthy eating are common, as are advertisements hawking offers to purportedly help the newly resolved meet their goals. Every five years, around the same time of year, the federal government releases updated dietary guidelines for Americans. These updates are meant to align the guidance with the latest dietary research. And in most cases, the new iteration, released by the US Department of Agriculture and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.?s Department of Health and Human Services earlier this week, does just that. It recommends reducing consumption of sugar, for example, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, and prioritizing ?whole foods.? But, there?s one glaring exception ? the promotion of red meat. Nutrition and public health experts were quick to call attention to the change and its misalignment with the science. After all, the research on red meat and health is pretty clear: It doesn?t do us many favors, particularly when it comes to saturated fats. It?s hard not to wonder about corporate influence here, particularly given that more than half of the nine authors have ties to the cattle and dairy industries. (A group of physicians have already filed a petition with the federal government calling for the guidelines to be revised due to inappropriate industry influence.) I also can?t help but worry about the toll the guidelines could have on the climate, just as the United States pulls out of the global climate treaty (to which every other country in the world is a member). Red meat has, by far, the highest carbon footprint of any food we eat, followed by dairy (which, too, is emphasized in the new guidelines). Even if the average American isn?t fastidiously consulting federal advice when making choices around their eating habits, the guidelines inform the national school lunch program, military meals, and other federal nutrition programs that cumulatively feed tens of millions of people. There is enough research out there showing that a diet heavier in plant-based fats and proteins and lower in animal products ? especially red meat ? tends to be better for both our bodies and the planet. For those of us who can choose what to put on our plates, that?s probably the best guideline to stick with. We wanted to hear from Ana about the work she did in 2025, and where the alliance is headed this year. Can you tell us about your work in 2025? Our work was carried out on two fronts, namely: 1.. Legal and political advocacy and defense. Working with bodies such as the State and Federal Public Defender?s Offices, the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) and the State and Federal Public Prosecutor?s Offices, as well as special UN and IACHR spaces and reports, in cases that seek to defend the territory of traditional and Indigenous communities not living in villages threatened by the Belo Sun mining company, and also in cases of criminalization and threats to human rights defenders. We also work on political advocacy with government structures such as Incra, Ibama, Funai, the Ministry of Human Rights and others. 2.. Fieldwork carried out with communities and leaders in Volta Grande do Xingu affected and/or threatened by large projects in the region, working on training to confront threats, rights violations, criminalization and conflicts, on the one hand, and on building a life project that includes the management of their territories in an environmentally, culturally, politically and economically sustainable manner, on the other. Since 2023, this process has included working with landless campers who are facing the transfer of areas of an agrarian reform settlement to the mining company Belo Sun; and, since 2025, direct work with Juruna, Kayap?, Akro? Gamella and Xipaya indigenous families seeking recognition of their territories, which have been usurped by megaprojects in Volta Grande do Xingu. What is the status of the Belo Sun project? Are you working to block it? ?The Belo Sun project?s license has currently been shelved by the Par? State Environment Secretariat. The agreement between the Belo Sun company and the Institute of Agrarian Reform (INCRA), which ceded approximately 2,400 hectares of the PA Ressaca settlement, was annulled by the federal judge of the Altamira-PA court and ratified by the judge who took over the case when it was contested by the mining company. This case is awaiting an appeal decision. In the second week of December, Belo Sun was the target of a protest by Indigenous women from the Middle Xingu. This demonstration resulted in the submission of guidelines questioning the studies and consultations carried out with the communities surrounding the project. The results of the political and legal incidents were supported by the groundwork and research carried out through my work in the field, as well as the occupation of the agrarian reform plots granted by INCRA to Belo Sun. How can Ek??s audience help? a.. Effective security for the approximately 200 families we work with in the Volta Grande do Xingu, the 50 families occupying the land that Belo Sun stole from the Agrarian Reform b.. Contributions to expand other groups to influence the autonomy of the territories of the Volta Grande do Xingu c.. But despite Trump?s claims that American fossil fuel giants will ?fix? Venezuela?s oil infrastructure, none of the companies have spoken out in favour of Trump?s plan yet. That includes Chevron, the only US oil company currently operating in Venezuela. How Chevron responds could either spell the end of Venezuelan sovereignty, or stop Trump?s disastrous plan in its tracks. We can still end this invasion before it escalates further, but only if there?s overwhelming pressure on Chevron to reject the plan. This is not an accident ? Europe is allowing this system that treats living beings as cargo. Now, we have a real chance of banning this cruelty! Cyprus just took over the EU presidency, and its leaders have publicly committed to advancing stronger protections for animals during transport. But lawmakers won?t act unless we make them feel the heat. If all of us chip in we could make this issue a key priority by exposing the horrors with hard-hitting investigations, running strategic ads to target key lawmakers, and supercharging people-powered campaigns across the EU and beyond to defend animals. The UK and Australia have moved to ban live animal exports ? with enough public pressure, we can force the EU to do the same. Can you chip in to help end the cruelty? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Weeks after the livestock carrier left Uruguay, Turkish authorities refused the ship permission to dock over missing paperwork. For over a month, these animals were trapped on a ship of death, filth, and fear with nowhere safe to go. Finally, those who survived were unloaded in Libya. We CANNOT allow this to keep happening. In 2023, the European Commission promised to reform animal transport rules ? limiting journey times, banning transport in extreme heat, and easing the suffering of animals on the move. But over two years later, that promise is stuck in the slow lane. Britain banned live animal exports last year. The EU still hasn?t. And now politicians across the EU are quietly watering down or delaying social and environmental protections, including animal transport reform. That?s where we come in. If enough of us chip in today, Ek? could launch a massive campaign push: a.. Running hard-hitting investigations to expose the horrors happening at sea ? then using the media firestorm that follows to demand action; a.. Placing strategic ads targeting key EU lawmakers, focusing especially on Cyprus as it takes over the EU presidency; a.. Running people-powered campaigns across Europe and beyond that turn public outrage into political cost. This suffering is happening in plain sight. The question is whether leaders will be allowed to look away ? or whether we make it politically impossible for them to do so. Image courtesy of partner, Rainforest Foundation US This is a game-changer for the Peruvian Amazon: a project that could mean the difference between protection and destruction for a vast expanse of rainforest. And we can be part of it. In the heart of Loreto state, 24 Indigenous groups have cared for their forest home for generations. Their ancestral lands shelter up to an astounding 40% of the Amazon?s birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians ? from pink dolphins to giant river otters. But logging, coca cultivation, oil development, and road construction are carving up these pristine forests and opening the door to land-grabbing and deforestation. Every new road accelerates destruction, pushing this ecosystem toward the point of no return. That?s where our partners come in. They?re working with local Indigenous associations to secure land tenure for over 550,000 acres of rainforest - that?s bigger than 26 different countries! - before extractive industries can claim it. They can do it all for less than $2 USD per acre (see more detail below). And time is critical: Peru has national elections early in 2026, with unknown consequences for efficient land titling. This could help decide the future of the Amazon. Can you chip in today to help Indigenous communities secure their forests ? and keep up Ek??s fight for people and planet over profit? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Our partner, Rainforest Trust, has been working in the area for 20+ years to support Indigenous communities to secure title to their ancestral territories. This project, in partnership with Rainforest Foundation US, would secure another 2000 sq. km + of land for good. It?s a painstakingly long process. It involves the early involvement of Indigenous associations to identify and resolve any land boundary conflicts, while also assigning specialized staff to support Peruvian government teams to expedite required and lengthy field- and desk-based processes. They can reduce the wait time by months, or even years. But with Peru?s national elections looming in early 2026, this golden opportunity to fast-track legal recognition could soon close. That?s what makes acting fast critical for these Amazon communities, for conservation, and for climate ? the 201,812,784 mT of carbon equivalents stored by this project are equal to 40 million passenger cars on the road for a year! Oil leaks and spills have been wreaking havoc on this landscape and these communities for decades already. Road construction is fragmenting the ecosystem, and driving land grabbing, deforestation, and extraction. Protests in cities around the country this weekend brought out thousands from the freezing temperatures of Minneapolis to warmer Los Angeles. A year plus of mounting anger against the brutality of American immigration enforcement is erupting in the streets. President Donald Trump and his administration have tried to put fault on people obstructing and interfering with ICE for the agency?s violence, but that excuse is wearing thin. And conservative allies in the media are spinning the death as the result of a domestic left-wing insurgency. But it?s not clear that?s going to work this time. Anger at the administration is already at a high and Trump?s political capital is waning. Whether that matters or not for a president who?s made clear he is uninterested in dissent is yet to be determined. ?Like people have done across place and time, we moved to make a better life for ourselves. Message-ID: Are We Listening? This is important. We're all in this together. DONATE Hi Vladimir, For many of us, monarch butterflies are stitched into our life-long memories. Floating just out of reach through our back yards, summer fields, and forests, they whispered a story of remarkable migrations, family picnics, school plays, and field trips?a time where landscapes were healthy and lands were working. They were stories of hope. Today, monarchs are sounding an alarm. A gift today is a response to that message. Why Monarchs Matter?Beyond the Garden Their sharp decline isn?t just about one butterfly. Monarchs are sentinels for all pollinators. What happens to monarchs is happening to native bees, moths, birds, and countless other species who are architects of our food supplies and quietly hold ecosystems together. Monarchs pollinate native wildflowers, maintaining plant diversity that fuels healthy ecosystems: especially nectar-producing plants such as milkweeds, goldenrods, and coneflowers ? flowers that other pollinating native bees, insects, birds and bats need to survive. Losing them is impacting our planet. These insects are pollinators of resilient landscapes that support clean air, water, and climate stability?and they are in severe decline. Monarchs matter because systems are unraveling. The Opportunity in Front of Us Across the country, people are ready to help. Interest in native gardening and pollinator-friendly landscapes has never been higher?but many communities lack the resources to turn intention into habitat. That?s where you come in. We partner with urban and rural communities to establish native gardens througout the U.S. We just need to secure the funding. We've previously funded projects in NJ, FL, NM, WA - 26 US states total, and hope to fund up to 20 planting sites in urban and rural communities. Will your location be next? A donation today to the Pollinator Protectors Fund will help communities install and restore native plant habitat where it?s needed most. Just $20 starts a site off with the purchase of 4 native plants. $500 can fund an entire garden, including necessities like native plants and seeds, compost, & soil amendments, and $1,000 funds all of this plus signage and community education tied directly to plantings at each pollinator garden. Why Give Now? Because what we plant?and don?t plant?this spring will shape pollinator survival for years to come. So your support is very important and timely. Please help monarchs?and all pollinators?find their way home. Thank you for your support for these amazing pollinators. And remember, together we are stronger! Under Trump, the EPA Will No Longer Consider Human Lives When Setting Pollution Limits Sign Now The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created for an important reason: to protect our health and the environment we live in. The EPA is tasked with keeping the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land where we grow our food, clean and healthy for all generations. But the agency just announced a shocking change. The EPA says it will stop counting human lives and health when setting limits on deadly air pollution. Instead, it will only look at how much pollution rules cost businesses. Air pollution is not abstract. Tiny particles called PM2.5 and smog-forming ozone slip deep into our lungs and bloodstream. They trigger asthma attacks, heart and lung disease, and even early death. Modest amounts can harm our lungs as much as smoking does. By ignoring these harms, Trump's EPA is telling us that profit matters more than breathing. This move fits a disturbing pattern under the Trump administration: roll back safeguards, please polluters, and tell communities to deal with the fallout. But the EPA's declared mission is to protect human health and the environment. Ignoring health to cut costs breaks that promise. Sign the petition now and tell the EPA: reverse this decision immediately because our lives are not negotiable. Thank you, Sophie Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Dear Bulat, We?re starting 2026 with a local focus. Our first live, online event of the year, Nourishing a Bioregional Economy, happens in just a couple weeks so we?ve pulled together a list articles to help gather our thoughts for the conversation. Here is a sample from the collection. We?ll be adding to this list over the coming weeks, so be sure to check back before the event. And please let us know if we?ve missed something that should be included. Rising to the Challenge of Sociopolitical-Environmental-Economic Polycrisis Miriam Landman, Resilience.org More people are starting to see and understand the tangled ball of troubles and threats that are being aimed at many of us within the U.S, as well as many others across the world, and our shared air, water, lands, ecosystems, and climate. Navigating Collapse Together: Towards Regenerative Public Life Nicole Negowetti, Resilience.org How does change actually happen? This question has followed me across every chapter of my life, from political science and philosophy studies, to graduate work in peacebuilding, into law and food policy, and now into conversations about the polycrisis and metacrisis. Our Broken and Brutal Economy Cylvia Hayes, TRANSCEND The global economy is broken and brutal. This is clearly evident in the United States. Unless you are born into some level of wealth it is extremely difficult to climb into a higher economic class. Economic mobility is determined more by a person?s zip code than merit and hard work. Rethinking Supply Chains Zoe Gilbertson, Liflad Thoughts Bioregionalism is more than a philosophy ? it?s a way of life rooted in place. It asks us to align our politics, culture, and economy with the natural boundaries of watersheds, soil and terrain. REGISTER TODAY Check out the entire list and let us know what you think. Dear friends of the rainforests, The forests of Chiapas in southern Mexico teem with life ? from howler monkeys and jaguars in the lowland rainforests to quetzals gliding through misty mountain canopies. But this paradise is vanishing fast. Nearly half of Chiapas? forests have already been lost to illegal logging, and what remains is shrinking every day. Once the trees fall, the land becomes fields, pastures, or plantations, and the streams that sustain countless people begin to dry up. Together with our partner, Otros Mundos Chiapas, we are calling on Mexico?s federal and state governments to act. Please sign our petition to stop the destruction and save these forests ? the lifeblood of nature and the communities who depend on them. The EU must offer an alternative. Message-ID: The EU must provide Greenland the option of membership if it desires it. Greenland Should Have the Choice to Join the EU if It Wants, as an Alternative to US Conquest Sign Now Donald Trump seems increasingly intent on international conquest. First he attacked Venezuela with air strikes and abducted its president ? subsequently referring to himself as the country's 'Acting President' on social media. Now, he has made it clear he wants to expand his domain to include Greenland, a self-governing Arctic nation that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. International leaders have tried to calm the situation, but Trump has remained adamant that he plans to make Greenland part of the U.S. "whether they like it or not," saying that it would happen "either the nice way or the more difficult way." He's even suggested he might use the U.S. military to forcefully take over the massive icy island. Yesterday, leaders from the governments of the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark met in Washington, D.C. to see if they could find a way out of this nightmare. But the talks apparently ended in a stalemate. As the Prime Minister for Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said: "We are now facing a geopolitical crisis. If we have to choose between the US and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark, NATO and the EU." If that's the case, then the European Union should genuinely offer Greenland the option to become a member state in its community. Currently, Denmark is a member of the EU, but Greenland is not. As Trump increasingly targets Greenland, the EU has a moral obligation to allow Greenland the option to join its ranks as a proper alternative to U.S. military conquest. It is up to Greenlanders to decide what they want to do with their country and their land. But one option before them should be the possibility of joining the European Union. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JANUARY 16, 2026 Her Terrain IT?S JUST BEFORE sunrise when Lucy Serea puts on her military-green uniform, hitches binoculars over one shoulder, and slips her feet into a pair of pink Crocs. As dawn breaks over the ranger base on the outskirts of Amboseli National Park ? a 40,000-hectare UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve in southern Kenya ? Serea joins 16 other female rangers for a morning jog and stretch. The women sing traditional songs in their native Maa language while they work out in the open grassland. Beyond them, across the border in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro rises from the clouds. At 9:00 a.m., Serea, a 27-year-old Maasai woman bearing her clan?s traditional circular scars on each cheek and one burned ear, replaces her pink Crocs with combat boots for her first wildlife patrol of the day. This is the daily routine of the members of Team Lioness ? one of Kenya?s rare all-female ranger units. Most days, these women walk long distances, patrolling the 147,000 hectares of community lands around Amboseli that are part of a critical elephant corridor between the reserve and Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania. Home to around 2,000 elephants, at least 50 other mammal species, and 400 bird species, Amboseli is located in one of the most poaching-prone regions of East Africa. The rangers monitor elephant migration routes, track wild animal behavior, look for signs of unauthorized hunting such as traps and animal remains, and gather intelligence from community members. In other words, they act as the first line of defense against poaching, including the retaliatory killing of wild animals who destroy crops or harm humans. What?s more, they do this taxing work in the face of entrenched prejudices within their communities where the assumption is that a Maasai man is stronger, wiser, and more capable than a woman. Most of the 17 Team Lioness rangers are the only Maasai women in their families with formal, paid jobs. In traditional Maasai culture, women are mainly responsible for domestic work like cleaning their manyattas (mud huts), cooking, collecting water, and caring for children. Men rear cattle and are typically the ones who might hold outdoor jobs, such as in conservation work. In a culture still dominated by men, Serea and her colleagues are not just changing the gender equation in the field of conservation, they are also breaking away from outdated yet persistent patriarchal traditions like polygamy, child marriage, and a life confined to domesticity. Along the way, they are serving as powerful role models for women and girls in their communities and beyond. Journalist Nikole Wintermeier and photographer Clara Watt profile Kenya?s all-female Maasai wildlife ranger team whose members are redefining what conservation means for wildlife, local communities, and themselves. A shocking cruelty lies beneath London: penguins trapped in a basement, cut off from sunlight for years. MPs finally have the chance to end it if we act fast. Tell MPs: Back the motion to free the Gentoo penguins trapped underground. Sign the petition Fifteen penguins are trapped underground in central London, cut off from sunlight and outdoor access. SEA LIFE London Aquarium keeps them in a windowless basement, pacing under harsh artificial lights while tourists pass by. They call it ?education,? but it?s cruelty disguised as entertainment. Now, Members of Parliament are starting to take notice. A motion has been introduced in Parliament calling out this abuse ? and with enough public pressure, we can make it impossible to ignore. This is our moment to push MPs to act before the next parliamentary recess and force SEA LIFE to end this cruel exhibit once and for all. Add your name to urge MPs to back the motion and free the penguins. In the wild, Gentoo penguins are the fastest swimming birds on Earth, sleek, powerful, and born to roam icy waters. But in SEA LIFE?s fake ?ice world?, their pool is only two metres deep, a fraction of what they need to dive and play. And what?s worse, some have spent fourteen years underground and never even seen the sky. Zoos and aquariums claim this is ?conservation,? but it?s not. Real conservation means protecting penguins in their natural habitats, not keeping them in basements for profit. This is cruelty, plain and simple. MPs are already speaking out. Now we need to turn their concern into action. With enough public pressure, we can push more MPs to back the motion and force SEA LIFE London Aquarium to free the penguins. Sign and share now to call on MPs to back the motion and demand SEA LIFE free the penguins. We?ve done it before. Tell Secretary Rollins and the Trump Administration: Reinstate the Roadless Rule Now Take Action Now The Trump Administration has proposed to rescind the 2001 Roadless Rule, a vital protection that for over two decades has safeguarded nearly 60 million acres of America?s last wild, undeveloped national forest lands. This reckless action threatens clean water, wildlife habitat, and the climate stability these forests provide. The Roadless Rule prevented road construction, logging, and industrial development in pristine backcountry forests. Places like Alaska?s Tongass, Montana?s Flathead, and Utah?s Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forests. Removing it will open millions of acres to destructive road-building and timber extraction, fragmenting ecosystems and accelerating climate change. Secretary Rollins must act immediately to reinstate the Roadless Rule and stop this attack on America?s natural heritage. Email your Secretary Brooke Rollins today and demand that they defend the Roadless Rule. Why It Matters a.. Nearly 60 million acres of our wildest national forests are now open to industrial logging and mining. b.. These lands represent some of our most important wildlife habitats ? lands critical for endangered species such as the grizzly, salmon, gray wolves, Mexican spotted owl, and salmon. c.. These lands store hundreds of millions of tons of carbon, essential for fighting climate change. d.. Roadless areas provide drinking water for over 60 million Americans. e.. The rollback contradicts decades of bipartisan conservation leadership and overwhelming public support. ?The Roadless Rule protects some of the most ecologically valuable and climate-resilient forestlands left in the United States,? said Susan Holmes, Executive Director of the Endangered Species Coalition. ?Dismantling it puts wildlife, water, and communities at risk for the profit of a few.? Message-ID: The Kenyan government successfully helped Craig the elephant to live a long, safe life. Help More Elephants Live a Long, Peaceful Life Like Craig, Safe From Poachers Sign Now For an elephant, dying of natural causes and old age is a rare feat ? especially if they're a "Super Tusker," known for their massive, sweeping tusks. Due to ivory poaching and habitat loss, elephant populations have been plummeting for the past 25 years. But Craig, a bull from Amboseli, Kenya, achieved this rare distinction. Not only did he live to be 54 years old, becoming a father and a popular star in human photography, but he was able to die peacefully. This was in large part thanks to the watchful guardianship of the Kenyan Wildlife Service, who ensured his safety. Craig was one of the last living super tuskers. After his death, the Kenyan Wildlife Service removed Craig's giant tusks to protect them from ever reaching the hands of poachers. Around 27 years ago, in 1979, around 1.3 million elephants lived on the African continent. Now, their numbers are around 400,000 individuals ? representing around a 70% loss. Various species of African elephants are now listed as endangered or critically endangered. Luckily, in some places, elephants are starting to make a comeback, albeit slowly. In Kenya, the elephant population grew by around 6,000 individuals in the past 4 years. That's a conservation story we need to celebrate and help promote! We must make sure that more elephants can have a life like Craig's. Sign the petition to ask for continued funding for the conservation programs that helped Craig live this long! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. The Kenyan government has created a success story, and we must ask them to please continue to commit to this beautiful work. Sign the petition.
