He promised to stand for fairness and justice. Now he has the chance to prove it with a global billionaire tax. Tell Ramaphosa: back a global billionaire tax at the G20 Sign the petition Right now, the world stands at a crossroads: billionaires are hoarding obscene wealth while millions struggle just to survive. But for the first time ever, South Africa?s President Cyril Ramaphosa has a special opportunity to change that. As G20 president, he can put a global billionaire tax at the top of the agenda ? a move that could rewrite the rules of the global economy. If he feels the weight of people power behind him, Ramaphosa could lead a historic shift. But if he doesn?t, billionaires will keep getting away with it. That?s where we come in. If thousands of us come together, we can show Ramaphosa the world is counting on him to lead ? and make billionaires finally pay their fair share. Add your name now to demand Ramaphosa push a global billionaire tax at the G20. Just a 2% wealth tax on the world?s richest 3,000 billionaires could raise $250 billion every single year, enough to save lives, protect ecosystems, and fund a just transition to a greener future. Ramaphosa has already set the stage. His G20 presidency theme, ?Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability?, places justice front and center. He?s even launched a task force on wealth inequality and economic disparities. But unless he puts a billionaire tax on the table, these efforts risk falling short. A billionaire tax isn?t a pipe dream ? it?s practical, achievable, and popular. Polling shows strong majorities around the world support taxing billionaires. And last year, Brazil introduced this very proposal at the G20, winning support with nations in Latin America and Africa. With South Africa hosting this year, the momentum is on Ramaphosa?s side. But momentum alone won?t be enough ? we need massive public pressure to make sure it happens. Sign now and tell President Ramaphosa: put a global billionaire tax on the G20 agenda Together, let?s make this year?s G20 remembered not for empty words, but for ending the era of billionaires. Japan?s legal ivory market is booming -- and fueling brutal poaching that kills thousands of gentle elephants every year. But for the first time in a generation, Japanese lawmakers are fully reviewing their ivory law and considering a total ban -- and global public pressure can tip the scale. They?re drafting the laws right now -- let?s make our demand clear: JAPAN: BAN IVORY! Every year, tens of thousands of elephants are butchered for their tusks despite a global ivory ban -- and Japan?s massive domestic market remains one of the main drivers. But we have a once-in-a-generation chance to change that: Japan is fully reviewing its ivory laws for the first time in 30 years! Public pressure has already pushed Japanese companies like Rakuten, Aeon, and Yahoo! Japan to ban ivory sales -- now?s our moment to make the government shut it down altogether. They?re drafting the laws now, and with the global endangered species summit coming up in just weeks, it?s our chance to put them in the spotlight. Add your name to protect these gentle giants: Tell Japan: shut down the ivory market, save elephant lives. Japan?s domestic ivory market is massive -- and it?s all legal. On top of millions of antique ivory items allowed in shops, the Government has an ?official stockpile? of more than 16,000 tusks and 80 tons of cut ivory pieces. That?s thousands of elephants? lives lost just for ivory sitting in storage. Every tusk and item sold legally increases the risk that illegal ivory slips through -- investigation after investigation has shown that the presence of ?legal? ivory in Japan creates loopholes that fuel trafficking and poaching. But after years of small adjustments, Japanese lawmakers are finally doing a full review. If they act decisively, they could shut down one of the world?s largest legal ivory markets -- and save thousands of elephants from torture. The time to act is now -- the review is almost complete, and environment ministries from around the world will be meeting in just weeks for their annual summit, putting Japan in the spotlight. Add your name and share with animal lovers everywhere: Tell Japan: shut down the ivory market, save elephant lives. We know our pressure works -- just last year, we forced global tourism giant TUI to introduce a ban on shark-fin transportation on their planes. If we focus our attention on Japan today, we could win again -- and ensure elephants will still be roaming the planet for generations to come. JAPAN: BAN IVORY! Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 03, 2025 A Long Way Home In mid-September, I received an email from a friend in Portland, Oregon. She and her partner would soon be making a trip to Victoria, British Columbia. ?Do you still live there?? she asked. ?We are casually crafting an exit strategy.? When I told her I was about to move back to the States, she responded with a common refrain: ?Why would you move back right now?? It?s a question I?ve been struggling to answer. In the 12 years that I?ve lived abroad ? and especially this past year ? I?ve watched as my home country has become more dysfunctional, dangerous, and unjust. Why would I move toward what many others are trying to escape? I still don?t have a great answer, but I think it has to do with a sense of responsibility. I?ve been away a long time, working as a journalist in Australia and Canada. And, more recently, I?d been questioning whether I should bring my acquired skills and knowledge back ?home.? In July, Earth Island Journal offered me an opportunity to do that and return to California ? a place I grew up in and will always love. I would work with Earth Island Institute, a progressive organization founded by the late activist David Brower that values courage, equity, and intersectionality. I would publish stories about grassroots efforts around the globe to protect people and the planet. Despite growing attempts by the Trump administration to silence and punish journalists, the job felt like a way to contribute and fight apathy. I arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area this past Monday, just after Trump ordered the National Guard into Portland (where I had stopped on my drive south and enjoyed a peaceful cappuccino, and a view over a city that was certainly not at war). I don?t blame my friend for wanting to leave in such a political climate, nor would I blame any scientist or service worker or citizen for leaving a place that feels hostile or unsafe. Not contributing tax dollars or talent to an oppressive government is one form of resistance. Another, I think, is staying, or returning to try to help. On my first day at the Journal office in Berkeley, as I was walking up the cement stairwell of the David Brower Center, a quote on the wall from the Indigenous botanist and author Robin Wall Kimmerer caught my eyes, and then my heart: ?To love a place is not enough. We must find ways to heal it.? I?m happy to be in a place, and in a job, dedicated to that kind of healing. I look forward to sharing stories that inform and inspire positive change near and far. Achim Steiner went on, as you know, to initiate the process of clustering the biodiversity convention, which his successor did not continue. With the UN 80 Initiative suggesting that the UNFCCC be placed under UNEP, the possibility of revisiting the idea of clustering MEAs has been reopened. Warmest regards, Felix Dodds Back to top Asian Development Blog's higlights in September Rowena Espiritu-Borromeo : Oct 03 06:43AM Dear colleague, Essays from the Asian Development Blog highlight how development must go beyond growth to address malnutrition, poverty, mental health, and cultural preservation?with compassion, data, and inclusive policy shaping human destiny. Check out our September highlights below and explore more blogs on other development topics. Hope you find insights from these pieces useful Happy reading! Asian Development Blog Learn more [Building Regional Defenses for Shared Challenges] September?s essays in the Asian Development Blog remind us that the work of development is not only to build infrastructure and raise growth. It also must confront the unseen costs of malnutrition, displacement, poverty and neglect, and to do so with rigor, compassion, and imagination. In Asia and the Pacific, childhood obesity has for the first time outpaced undernourishment. Dinesh Arora, a principal health specialist at ADB, and Nina Badgaiyan, an early childhood development expert, write with clarity about a crisis that straddles two eras: Millions of children still go hungry while others face medical peril associated with their diet. The region faces a paradox: food systems that simultaneously fail the poor and imperil the middle class. Fiscal measures, food safety reforms, and local crop support is needed to tilt the balance toward healthier generations. It is rare that the subject of relocating cemeteries, shrines, and other sacred spaces in the wake of new roads and rail lines is discussed. Kazi Akhmila and Meenakshi Ajmera of ADB?s Office of Safeguards, with urban planner Saifulla Dostogir, take a frank look at how infrastructure projects can founder if they ignore culture. They argue that trust, dialogue and flexibility can turn potential community resistance into support and resilience. Newly released international poverty data show both the progress of recent decades and the fragility that still defines the lives of hundreds of millions in Asia and the Pacific. ADB statisticians Arturo Martinez and Joseph Bulan offer careful, data-rich answers to popular questions about poverty, its measurement and meaning. Mental health is more than a medical issue. The cost of neglect is staggering, with over a trillion dollars drained from the global economy each year, while the price of care, in many places, is little more than a few dollars. Rachana Parikh of PATH and ADB?s Vasoontara Yiengprugsawan argue that investing in mental health pays off in higher productivity. It is also part of the basic fabric of inclusion, the chance for communities to function with dignity rather than fracture under strain. Broader financing for mental health is not a luxury, but a necessity in a region where disasters, chronic stress, and underfunded systems erode both productivity and dignity. What unites these disparate voices, health specialists, safeguards officers, statisticians, is the conviction that policy choices do not just build roads and economies, they shape human destiny. ? On September 19, the European Union approved a new package of sanctions against Russia. In particular, this package envisages a complete ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas into the EU starting in January 2027 (previously, the ban was planned to be introduced the following year), as well as more severe sanctions against intermediary companies, Russia?s ?shadow fleet?, and Russian companies Rosneft and Gazprom Neft. Earlier, on September 9, the European Parliament noted Ukraine?s progress towards European integration, while also calling on the country not to lower its ambitions. For example, it encouraged the Ukrainian government to pay attention to compliance with European environmental and nature conservation standards. European MEPs called for all possible support for initiatives and organizations involved in analyzing the environmental consequences of the war. In August 2025, the Ukrainian government presented a 2025-2026 action plan, aimed at further progress toward European integration. Ukrainian environmental organizations have critically assessed it and noted areas for improvement. Read more about these events and decisions, as well as how Kamianska Sich National Park is experiencing Russia?s full-scale invasion, in our regular review: a.. Environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine. August-September 2025 Sanctions against Russia will be effective when Ukraine itself reduces its dependence on fossil fuels. However, this is not an easy decision for a country that has relied on the wealth of its coal industry for many years. The abandonment of fossil fuel production should not be accompanied by the destruction and stagnation of coal-mining regions and single-industry towns. To this end, just transition programs are needed. Read about just transition strategies being implemented in Ukraine, despite the ongoing full-scale Russian invasion, in Inga Pavliy?s article, part of our series examining Ukraine?s coal industry: a.. Just transition for coal-mining communities: What is it and how does it work in wartime Ukraine? We are also launching a series about how environmental activists and organizations in Eastern Europe are surviving amid war, repression, funding cuts, and political pressure. The first article focuses on the situation in Belarus. In 2021, following the protests in 2020, most environmental organizations in the country were forced to shut down. Some activists, experts, and journalists were arrested, while others were forced to leave Belarus to continue their work, and still others went into hiding, refusing to engage in any visible activity. Almost five years have passed, and the situation in the country has not improved. There are still over 1,200 recognized political prisoners, among them environmental activists. Read about how Belarusian environmental organizations are coping with repression, the war in Ukraine, and their own challenges in the first article in this series: a.. Environmental and climate activism in Belarus, Ukraine, and Georgia during Russia's full-scale invasion. Part One Another serious problem this year for Ukraine was a locust invasion. Recalling biblical legends, it was even labeled an ?Egyptian? invasion. However, as expert Stanislav Vitter notes, we are not talking about Egyptian locusts, but migratory locusts (Locusta migratoria). Apart from climate change, one factor contributing to their abnormal spread is Russia?s full-scale invasion. The destruction and draining of the Kakhovka Reservoir created favorable conditions for a spike in their population. The lack of monitoring and preventive measures, as well as any management whatsoever in the occupied territories, allowed the locusts to actively reproduce and spread throughout Ukraine. If controls are not implemented in the near future, next year could also be disastrous. Read more in Viter?s article: a.. Invaders from the steppes: Locusts and the war in Ukraine Our experts continue to analyze the consequences of Russia?s demarch? and its withdrawal from the Ramsar Convention. A general trend in today?s authoritarian governments abandoning international environmental agreements could have serious consequences. And although the Russian government recently ordered increased domestic protections for wetlands, this does not mean that the situation has stabilized. Fifteen wetlands in occupied territories in Ukraine should continue to be protected under the Ramsar Convention, but their situation remains problematic. Eugene Simonov and Angelina Davydova examine the problem: a.. The Ramsar split?was it inevitable, and what should be done next? To continue our high-quality work, we need your support. Forwarded this email? Subscribe here for more An intriguing behavior of global rain an exercise Alpha Lo Oct 6 READ IN APP A famous scientist Konrad Lorenz, who studied animal behavior, used to give his students the assignment to watch animals and see what patterns they would notice. He would sometimes have them sit in front of a fish tank for a long time and write down what behavior they noticed, without referencing their school knowledge. The idea was to increase their ability to notice things, and also make conjectures about what they noticed. Now you can do a similar exercise with the water cycle. One interesting exercise is to look at the evolution of rainfall across the globe over time, and see what patterns you notice. There?s a website you can do this on called Ventusky.com. The site gives you these beautiful pictures of wind patterns, temperature, humidity, and pressure around the globe. You can then click play and watch as these variables change over time. See what you notice. A while back as I was doing this, I noticed that there was a thin stream of rain that occurred around the equator, which was there most of the time. Around the rest of the earth, the rainfall movement followed these flowy plume-like shapes, moving for a while, and then disappearing. There were tendrils that grew, swirled, and then vanished. As I was watching, I noticed that there seemed to be a lot of rainfall always over the Amazon, a little south of the thin equatorial stripe of rain. Why was this? Well this seemed to me evidence that the Amazon rainforest is generating its own rain. Usually in other places the rain gets blown all over the place, but the rainfall over the Amazon is steadier because the forest is continually transpiring. The forest can absorb a lot more rainfall, and then over time it can release moisture from its leaves back into the atmosphere. I wondered if I would see a similar pattern over the Congo rainforest too. As I studied these time lapse videos more, I noticed the Congo rainforest also had a steady pulse of rain over it. And around the Indonesian archipelago, there were also rainfall patches that remained steady. I wondered, why was that? Was there a rainforest there too? I hadn?t heard of a rainforest there before. So I looked it up, and lo and behold there was a rainforest there; the Indonesian rainforest is the third largest rainforest in the world after the Amazon and Congo rainforests! Here is a timelapse video I made of the rainfall on the Ventusky site. It shows how the rain patterns evolve over a month. What do you notice? Climate Change and Energy News: Weekly Digest by CAN EECCA -------------------------------------------------- Someone forwarded this digest to you? You can subscribe using this link -------------------------------------------------- Dear subscribers, CAN EECCA has prepared an overview of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in the region ? most countries still rely heavily on fossil fuels and need more ambitious climate targets. Kyrgyzstan is drafting its first Climate Action Law, Belarus bets on eco-tourism, and Taiwan increases its reliance on Russian oil, raising energy and economic risks. Globally, rising costs in Bel?m threaten participation of vulnerable countries at COP30, while new research shows extreme heat is intensifying faster than climate models predict. Best regards, CAN EECCA Communications Manager Aizirek Almazbekova -------------------------------------------------- News from the EECCA Region NDC Review in EECCA: Key Findings and Country Recommendations CAN EECCA, in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), released an analysis of current NDCs across Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, covering Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Moldova. Most countries remain dependent on fossil fuels and require more ambitious emission reduction targets. Climate Action Law: Why Kyrgyzstan Needs It Right Now The new law lays the foundation for national climate policy, introducing concepts like mitigation, adaptation, and carbon neutrality, while establishing reporting mechanisms and enabling climate finance. Linked to the recently updated NDC 3.0, it reflects Kyrgyzstan?s goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Belarus Overhauls Tourism, Focuses on Eco-Tourism Belarus has restructured its tourism sector, moving the National Tourism Agency from the Ministry of Sports to direct government oversight. The goal is to double the sector?s GDP contribution to 4.5% by 2030. Authorities emphasize eco-tourism, wellness, and cultural routes, though environmentalists warn that increased visitor flows may harm natural areas without strict regulation. Taiwan Increases Dependence on Russian Oil, Raising Risks In the first half of 2025, Taiwan became the largest importer of Russian oil, spending $1.3 billion and effectively channeling $1.7 billion to Russia?s budget. A joint study by CREA, ERF, EcoDefence!, and Urgewald warns that this dependence threatens Taiwan?s energy and economic security. Russian oil is used in semiconductor production, leaving the industry vulnerable to sanctions and geopolitical shocks. Drought Drives Kazakhstan?s Agriculture to Adapt Climate change intensifies water scarcity, threatening crop yields and rural resilience. Water management expert Madina Musaeva emphasizes that without modern irrigation and new agricultural technologies, Kazakhstan risks severe agricultural losses. Transitioning to drought-resistant crops and rational water use becomes crucial. Seminar in Tbilisi on New Environmental Assessment Law On October 28, the German Business Association (DWV) and Ecometer will host a seminar on changes to Georgia?s Environmental Assessment Law and its business implications. Participants will learn new requirements, risk reduction strategies, and practical examples of adaptation. Almaty Seminar on Water-Related Climate Risks On October 10, Almaty hosts the fourth session in the ?Education and Climate Adaptation? series, focusing on water-related threats such as droughts, floods, heatwaves, and glacier melt. -------------------------------------------------- World Climate and Energy News Rising Costs Threaten Vulnerable Countries? COP30 Participation Preparations for COP30 in Bel?m, Brazil, face high prices and housing shortages. Vulnerable and developing nations report they may send smaller delegations due to costs, weakening their influence at negotiations. Extreme Heat Intensifies Faster Than Climate Models Predict A new PNAS study finds that extreme temperatures are rising faster than current climate models estimate, in some cases four times faster. This underestimation increases real-world risks for heatwaves, mortality, and ecosystems. Fossil Fuel Finance Drops, Clean Energy Support Lags CETP reports a 78% reduction in international fossil fuel financing over two years. However, released funds are not sufficiently redirected to renewables, and loopholes allow continued support for coal, oil, and gas. -------------------------------------------------- Opportunities Environmental Photography Award 2026 The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation invites photographers worldwide to showcase the planet?s beauty and fragile ecosystems. Rights of Nature motions at the heart of the IUCN World Conservation Congress ? From 9?12 October 2025, the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi will decide the future of global conservation policy. This year, Rights of Nature is at the center of critical motions: Recognizing the rights of Antarctica, transforming our relationship with the ocean, protecting rivers as living entities, promoting coexistence & ecological recovery, and perationalizing Rights of Nature in real territories. Why it matters: these motions influence international law, shape biodiversity policy, and strengthen the recognition of ecosystems as living communities with their own rights. ? Sign the petition Artificial Intelligence (AI) could teach a beginner to make a biological weapon or even trigger a deadly pandemic ? and that?s what the companies who make chatbots say! Right now, a bill to help prevent such nightmare scenarios is on New York Governor Hochul?s desk, but a tiny bunch of tech oligarchs is lobbying to stop her from signing it into law. The Responsible AI Safety and Education (RAISE) Act passed the New York State Legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support in June. Polls show 84% of New Yorkers also support the bill?s goals. Still, it?s not a done deal. Tech billionaires could sink the bill if we don?t raise our voices to counter their spin: Ask Governor Hochul to sign the RAISE Act, because the risks for us all are just too much to leave it up to Big Tech. The RAISE Act would make new rules for AI titans like Elon Musk's xAI, OpenAI, Google, and Meta ? corporations training AI software with eye-watering amounts of computing power. Instead of making it up as they go, those ?large developers? would be forced to take more care about the catastrophic risks of AI, and would face serious fines if they break the rules. Just in the last month, Amazon?s Jeff Bezos and OpenAI?s Sam Altman have admitted that there?s an AI investment bubble. As the bubble threatens to burst, the pressure on AI companies to cut corners, cover up mistakes, or ignore warnings is only going to increase. We urgently need this law. It?s not perfect, but no law is. The RAISE Act makes meaningful progress on AI safety, and would continue to build a state movement to properly govern AI in the absence of any US federal legislation. Ask the New York Governor to sign the RAISE Act into law, to mitigate the risks of AI going rogue. It's cruel and disease-spreading. Ostrich Farming Is Cruel and Unnecessary. Canada Must Ban This Practice Now! Sign Now Vladimir, After an avian flu outbreak at an ostrich farm in British Columbia, the Canadian government informed the farm that it had to cull the infected ostriches ? at least 400 animals in total. But it wasn't the innocent ostriches' fault that humans had crammed them in farmed conditions where diseases run rampant! Ostriches are farmed throughout North America for their meat, feathers, leather, and natural oils. These elements are all extracted from their bodies for use in kitchens, the fashion industry, and by cosmetics companies. Why are we still cruelly farming and exploiting animals when there are so many alternative, non-animal based products we could use instead? The more we keep avian animals captive, the more zoonotic diseases will continue to spread. And as a result, the more farmers and legislators will be forced to make incredibly difficult decisions about which animals to cull and how to protect others from the spread of devastating diseases like avian flu. We have to keep both animals and humans safe from this horrible cycle! The only way to actually address this problem is to end the outdated and awful practice of ostrich farming for good. Sign the petition now if you agree! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 10, 2025 Rooted in Care SMOKE BILLOWED FROM the sugar stacks. The vegetal rot of processed sugarbeets wafted over the interstate. The vinegar aftertaste coated my throat. Stung my nostrils. The sharp scent of sugary wastewater seeped into my pores. Outside my Toyota pickup, the wind blew across fields crusted with December snow and salts. It was my first North Dakota winter in three years. My first drive along the Red River since leaving my career as an American literature professor in New England to assume my position as a soil conservationist in my home county. The smell from the sugar stacks along I-29 was a reminder of how long I?d been gone. It would take a week for me to reacclimate to the noxious odor that the sugar industry has rescripted as ?the sweet smell of jobs.? Like many folks from the rural Great Plains, I?ve left home more times than I can count.? But the prairie and my father?s long battle with multiple sclerosis have perennially called me home. The chipped-tooth border between North Dakota and Minnesota is a landscape dominated by salt and sugar. We grow more processed sugar in the Red River Valley than anywhere else in the country. The American Crystal Sugar factories that line the Red River produce 3 billion pounds of processed sugar per year. The industrial methods used to grow sugarbeets and other monoculture cash crops leave behind patches of water-soluble salts trapped on the surface of compacted soils. These saline conditions spread across bare fields that were once tallgrass prairie, the biodiverse grasslands replaced by growing patches of salted earth, where almost nothing grows. An aerial view of my home in flyover country bears resemblance to the MRI scans of my father?s brain and spinal cord. The salt crust on black fields mirrors the plaque that builds up along dad?s myelin sheath. The chisel plows that cut through dense networks of mycorrhizal fungi, ritually destroying the soil microbiome, are akin to my father?s confused immune system that attacks the protective fatty tissue around his nerve fibers and spine. It?s been three years since that winter homecoming. Today, in my dual roles as a soil conservationist and my father?s caregiver, I have begun to dream about an alternative to the monoculture economies that poison the land and our bodies. Writer Josh Anderson explores the deep connections between human health and soil health, and his vision for a thriving Great Plains prairie ecosystem that supports both. Eoin Higgins Oct 14 READ IN APP Hello and welcome to the Ek? newsletter. Today we?re covering the EUDR, a ceasefire in Gaza, the White House?s pro-industry policy, and a tipping point for the planet. Regulation on time A long-awaited EU regulation could face another delay?and that possibility has multiple stakeholders united in opposition. The European Commission is weighing a yearlong delay of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), citing IT system readiness as the reason. This comes after a prior yearlong delay that called for giving industry more time to come into compliance with the law. Left and center-left MEPs are rejecting that logic, noting that the commission already had a year to get things sorted. And groups like the WWF are rejecting the excuse: ?We find it astonishing that the EU would not have the resources and capability to build and operate the infrastructure required for the functioning of the EUDR. This infrastructure should have been in place already at the end of 2024 and suggestions that it might not be completed one year later are simply unacceptable.? This time, they?re joined by unlikely allies?corporations and business interests who want to tap down on uncertainty. In a representative example, Nestl?, Mars Wrigley, and a number of fellow food companies and their suppliers, as well as NGOs, said in an open letter that another delay ?puts at risk the preservation of forests worldwide, will accelerate climate change impacts, and undermines trust in Europe?s regulatory commitments.? ?For the EU to go back, don?t you think that it?s going to have negative repercussions on the farmers and the government and on our resources???Leticia Yankey, a cocoa farmer in Ghana (Reuters) (Mighty Earth) (WWF) (Food Navigator) In other news Ceasefire is the first step A fragile peace is taking hold in Gaza. But the ceasefire is only the first step, Palestinians and their supporters say. As Palestinian prisoners are released and Gazans return to their homes, questions remain about what a post-genocide future looks like in the territory?and how the people will rebuild. Massive infrastructure projects will be needed to return the strip to even an approximation of what it was on October 6, 2023. Further complicating matters, some reports indicate that Israel may have a backdoor built into the deal allowing it to restart hostilities over the hostage release (other sources have denied this). (AP) (Mondoweiss) (Middle East Monitor) Concierge service A senior US energy official revealed to the Washington Post that the Trump White House is offering fossil fuel companies what amounts to ?concierge, white glove service? for project approval. The White House told the Washington Post that the president?s policy of ?drill baby drill? would continue. ?It?s a lot of undoing old policies and getting rid of regulatory burdens.??Kelm (the Washington Post) Tipping over? The Global Tipping Points report for 2025 found that coral reefs are declining, with bleaching a main concern. While some experts questioned the outlook on reef health, all agree that more action is needed to protect the vital underwater ecosystems. It shows the need to cut greenhouse gases aggressively. ?We can no longer talk about tipping points as a future risk. In a huge victory for public health and environmental protection, the state of New Jersey sued multiple giant PFAS-producing corporations. Now, Chemours, DuPont, and Corteva will pay $875 million over the course of 25 years. While this is a great step forward, what we really need is something far more basic: a complete ban on PFAS! The research is clear: PFAS are incredibly dangerous and linked to horrifying, sometimes even fatal, health problems. Exposure can lead to developing various cancers, contribute to autoimmune diseases and infertility, and precipitate chronic organ problems. Such toxic chemicals have no place on our planet. The scary part is that most people have already been exposed to PFAS. In fact, the vast majority of Americans even have PFAS in their blood. PFAS are everywhere, from waterproof clothing, to non-stick pans and flame retardants, to even the packaging that our food comes in. It is almost impossible for consumers to avoid these products, and once forever chemicals are in our blood or our watersheds, they're incredibly difficult to get out. PFAS are still poisoning the public to this day, and these settlements are like a bandaid on a gaping, growing wound. Dear friends of the rainforests, The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) faces a crisis that demands immediate international attention. Over the next few days, we?ll be presenting three urgent petitions addressing interconnected threats to Congo?s people and forests. Each petition tackles a different aspect of this crisis, but all are linked by a common thread: the future of one of the world?s most vital ecosystems hangs in the balance. Armed conflict in eastern DRC has displaced more than 7 million people and created a humanitarian catastrophe. The fighting has also devastated regions that are biodiversity hotspots and home to critically endangered mountain gorillas, eastern lowland gorillas, and chimpanzees. The violence is fueled by competition for Congo?s valuable natural resources ? minerals, timber, and land. Forests are destroyed, protected areas are militarized, and conservation efforts collapse when communities are forced to flee. Peace isn?t just a humanitarian necessity, it?s an environmental imperative. Without security and stability, there can be no effective forest protection, no sustainable development, and no future for the region?s extraordinary biodiversity. Eoin Higgins Oct 17 READ IN APP Hello and welcome to the Ek? newsletter. Today we?re covering Madagascar, Gaza, whales, and deforestation. Island nation change Gen Z-led protests in Madagascar opened the door for the toppling of the country?s government by military coup, the latest development in the island nation?s contentious politics. President Andry Rajoelina left the country on Tuesday after being pushed out by the army and a vote to impeach in the nation?s parliament. But it was the weeks of protest, led by youth, that forced the hand of the country?s institutions. Now, with a military-led government in charge, the immediate future of Madagascar is uncertain. International mining interests and the vanilla industry, in particular, are watching to see what will become of their contracts in the nation. Anger has been growing in Madagascar for some time. A 15% reciprocal tariff put in place by the US hit an already beleaguered economy in a country where more than two-thirds of the population live in poverty. And reports of abuses, violations, and pollution in the mining sector only increased the unrest. ?We are taking power.??Col. According to the report, deforestation is continuing at or about the same levels it was since the beginning of the decade, a sobering?and depressing?state of affairs. Not only are nations mainly failing to address the crisis, they?re not putting enough money and energy behind what efforts are in place. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 17, 2025 A Solution that Didn't Stick It?s been years since I last used a PFAS-coated nonstick pan. I gave them up after reading one too many reports about the serious health impacts of these synthetic chemicals that are widely used in consumer products that resist oil, stains, and water. Honestly, I?ve never looked back; I?ve been more than satisfied with my cast iron alternatives, which are nonstick in their own right. Needless to say, I was sorely disappointed earlier this week when Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed legislation that would have helped protect cookware users across California. SB 682, which the state legislature passed in September, was set to ban ?intentionally added? PFAS from cookware, as well as from food packaging, dental floss, children?s products, cleaning products, and ski wax. In doing so, it would have reduced direct product-related exposure to these ?forever chemicals? that do not break down naturally, as well as manufacturing-related PFAS pollution that contaminates our shared water, soil, and air. Big Cookware wasn?t having it. The industry lobbied hard against the bill, claiming concern over consumer choice and affordability. Several high-profile chefs joined the fray, pointing, in all seriousness, to things like the difficulty of cooking omelets and crepes in ?regular? pans. In the end, the industry won. The defeat stings. A PFAS cookware ban seems like such low-hanging fruit. In a world where many solutions are complicated, this one offered a simple way to reduce the flow of harmful chemicals into our bodies and the environment. It also comes at a time when we?re seeing rising rates of cancer among young people, which research increasingly suggests could be related to exposure to environmental pollutants. Add to that the sheer pettiness of some of the industry arguments ? ahem, omelets ? and it?s hard not to feel let down. But I haven?t given up all hope. Several other states, including Minnesota, Colorado, and Vermont, have already banned PFAS in cookware. Several more are currently considering bans. Once enough of our elected leaders stand up against the use of these toxic chemicals, the industry will have no choice but to meet the market where it?s headed. I just wish California could have helped get us there sooner. Zoe Loftus-Farren Managing Editor, Earth Island Journal Photo by Megan Bucknall PS: Let?s grow the movement! Polling shows that a majority of Europeans, including people in Spain where the industry is being pushed, support an EU-wide ban on octopus factory farms. Now, lawmakers need to see that citizens want them to act. Octopuses are among the smartest animals on Earth ? even forming underwater ?cities? where they live and interact with one another. Scientists warn that locking such complex, social beings in barren tanks would be cruel and inhumane. Once this industry starts, it will be much harder to stop. That?s why we must act now. Every signature piles pressure on Parliament, and if enough of us speak out together, we can create an outcry so powerful lawmakers will have no choice but to listen. Sign now to protect octopuses and stop this cruel industry before it spreads. We know this strategy works, as we have done it before ? winning a historic ban on octopus farming in California. Now it?s Europe?s turn to lead the way and set a global precedent to save octopuses from this cruelty. Sign the petition Thanks for all that you do, Deborah and the team at Ek? AI until its safe AI Safety Team ??????? ?? ??????? ???? "Superintelligent" AI could be disastrous. More than 400 top experts, faith leaders and public figures just released a statement calling for a ban on AI superintelligence until it's safe. Let?s build on that now. Sign the Statement on Superintelligence. Add your name Reckless tech billionaires are racing to build AI ?superintelligence? - raising massive ethical and security concerns. From controlling nuclear weapons, to replacing millions of jobs, to creating deadly viruses - unfettered AI development could have catastrophic consequences for us all. And it?s keeping top experts and scientists awake at night. 400 Nobel Laureates, CEOs, and faith leaders have put their names behind a powerful new call to ban this advanced AI until it?s safe: the Statement on Superintelligence. That?s the foundation. Now it?s up to us to build a people powered campaign so big that our governments have to respond. Sign the Statement on Superintelligence, and help make this so big that governments cannot ignore. AI experts believe that superintelligence could be less than ten years away, and they warn that we do not know how to control it. That?s why hundreds of leading public figures are calling for AI tools to be developed securely and for those tools to be targeted at solving specific problems in areas like health and education. Recent polling shows that three?quarters of U.S. adults want strong regulations on AI development, preferring oversight akin to pharmaceuticals rather than the tech industry?s "self?regulation." And almost two-thirds (64%) feel that superhuman AI should not be developed until it is proven safe and controllable, or should never be developed. Big Tech lobbyists say that a moratorium could give rogue actors or states an advantage. But that argument underestimates the catastrophic potential for all of humanity as advanced AI is developed ? regardless what country it?s ultimately made in, or if we ever really achieve ?AI superintelligence?. Among the 400+ initial signers of the Statement on Superintelligence are retired military leaders and security advisors, journalists and academics, policy-makers, priests and CEOs. Let?s add our names too, and show governments and Big Tech that it?s time to act. Add your name to the Statement on Superintelligence. Just in the last month, Amazon?s Jeff Bezos and OpenAI?s Sam Altman have admitted that there?s an AI investment bubble. As the bubble threatens to burst, the pressure on AI companies to cut corners, cover-up mistakes, and ignore warnings, is only going to increase. That?s why we need to speak out NOW. Encouraged by the success of the conference series on Sustainable Development of Energy Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) we have strted from 2014 a regional series targeting the region of South East Europe (SEE SDEWES conferences), with conferences successfully held in Ohrid, Piran, Novi Sad, Sarajevo and Vlore. The next one in the series will be organized in the city of Burgas, Bulgaria and we hope to see you there. Can engineering solutions mitigate the climate change before we need to adapt? How can we build low carbon energy systems? How can we integrate water, energy, transport, waste and food systems so that we decouple development from growing use of resources? What are the societal and economic challenges before implementing clearly beneficial engineering solutions? What is the role of sustainable cities and regions? These and many other questions are being asked and answered by researchers participating in the Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES Conference), an event devoted to scientists, engineers, policy makers, students and other interested parties in the field of sustainable development. The first six SDEWES Conferences were held in Dubrovnik, later being also held in Ohrid, on a Mediterranean cruiser between Venice and Istanbul, Lisbon, Piran, Palermo, Rio de Janeiro, Novi Sad, Buenos Aires, Sarajevo, Cologne, Vlore, Sao Paulo, Paphos, Vina del Mar, Gold Coast, Rome, Saidia and every odd year again in Dubrovnik. The details about the Conference (important dates, conference fee, accommodation, contact addresses, etc.) can be found on the web site: https://www.burgas2026.sdewes.org The scientific quality of the conferences is confirmed by the fact that leading international archival scientific journals, "Energy - The International Journal", "Applied Energy", "Energy Conversion and Management", "Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews", and others. UWEC Work Group needs your support to continue covering the environmental consequences of Russia?s invasion of Ukraine for a wide audience. We remain a critical resource for research and articles on the war are published not only in Ukrainian, but also in English and Russian. We approach translation into English with special care to access a wide audience. We work with native speakers, and our whole team is an international association of experts, journalists and researchers, enabling us not only to present information in a wide context and variety of perspectives. Today, our work is especially important, as more research on the environmental and climate consequences of the invasion have begun to appear. Against the background of other important news stories, the Russian war?s environmental impacts and the urgent need to take decisive climate action seem to fade into the background. Among multiple crises with important global ramifications, Ukraine must remain a priority topic in the media. Data collection and analysis of the war?s impacts on nature, nature?s adaptation to the realities of war and, eventually, post-war times and ?green recovery? projects is critical. UWEC?s coverage informs global peace-building and conflict resolution. Ukrainian experience also highlights solutions that other countries affected by military action can put to use. Global uncertainty and changing priorities affects donors and institutional funders and the initiatives they support and UWEC is not alone in feeling those changes. Our team remains committed even as grant funding decreases. UWEC maintains its publishing schedule for the time being and we are determined to continue working as long as we can. UWEC needs increased resources for this media initiative to continue and grow. We are pleased to invite our readers to support our publication. We hope you will take this opportunity to make a one-time donation or subscribe to a monthly newsletter. For our part, we promise to continue publishing timely stories and analysis and actively participate in discussions of issues of adaptation and overcoming the environmental consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine. Our hearts remain in Ukraine and humanity is balancing on the knife?s edge of multiple military conflicts. We will be grateful for your heartfelt commitment to the region?s environment. Horrifyingly, the demand from the US is the biggest threat to the species? survival! We can turn this around. Etsy and eBay have already banned the sale of bats ? now we have a chance to take this pressure to boiling point and demand Amazon follow suit to stop this grotesque trinket trade. But they?ll only act if they can feel the heat from tens of thousands of us around the world. Tell Amazon to save painted woolly bats! It?s totally macabre ? Amazon were found to be awash with the bodies of these little bats, some sold as jewelry or stuffed in jars. HUNDREDS of listings were discovered by researchers over a 12-week period and the majority of vendors were in the US. These stunning creatures known for their flaming orange and black wings are at particular risk of dying out because they reproduce so slowly, just one offspring at a time. But if we can build enough pressure on Amazon to stop selling them, demand for these creatures would take a massive hit and they could finally start to recover in the wild. At a time when species are disappearing at alarming speed, we have to do everything we can to save the precious wildlife we have left. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 24, 2025 Deserting the Delta DORIS EGBA?S STRONGEST memory of her childhood in the village of Otuabagi, in Nigeria?s Bayelsa State, is of her parents? interminable search for arable land. ?When I look back now, out of all my memories, it is the one that stands out ? the fact that they were always looking for where they could grow crops just to feed us,? says Egba, who?s now a teacher in the village school. Otuabagi, a rustic fishing village nestled within the vast network of alluvial lands, mangrove forests, and slow-moving creeks that make up the Niger Delta, is the birthplace of oil production in the country. In 1956, when Shell D?Arcy ? as Royal Dutch Shell was then known ? struck black gold in the region, the fortunes of Egba?s parents and their fellow villagers, who are predominantly farmers and fisher folks, took a turn for the worse. Their ancestral land, with its rich soil and plentiful water, became part of what came to be known as the Oloibiri oilfield. At least 18 of the 21 oil wells that made up the oilfield were sited in Otuabagi, mostly on farmlands, fishing ponds, and streams that had served the villagers for generations. Over the next two decades, the oilfield would pump over 20 million barrels of crude oil, resulting in massive hydrocarbon pollution that changed Otuabagi forever. By the time Egba was born in 1980, two years after the oilfield had ceased to produce, the once-thriving fish ponds and farms had been transformed into polluted, lifeless waters and barren lands? Shell never cleaned up the mess it made in Otuabagi. Improperly decommissioned well heads and manifolds (the assemblage of pipes, valves, and other fittings that help direct the flow of pressurized oil from wells) still litter the landscape. Otuabagi isn?t the only village to suffer such a fate. For decades, Shell and a host of other international and domestic oil companies expanded drilling operations throughout the Niger Delta, displacing local communities and despoiling the natural environment in the process. Now, in the face of mounting lawsuits over spills and crude theft, as well as a decline in output from the oilfields in the restive region, all of the international oil companies that plundered these lands are attempting to rid themselves of their once-lucrative-but-now-problematic assets in the Delta. Journalist Obiora Ikoku reports on how the international oil majors ? including ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, and Shell ? are scrambling to exit the Niger Delta without cleaning up their mess or compensating impacted communities. Trump Is Demolishing Entire East Wing of White House to Build New $300 Million Ballroom Sign Now On Monday, the Trump administration began the process of completely demolishing the East Wing of the White House. A 7-foot-high fence encircled the area and construction equipment arrived on the scene. In the two days since, most of the building has been destroyed ? and Trump's team has just confirmed that the rest of the historic East Wing building will be entirely gone by the weekend. All of this is just to make room for Trump's unnecessary gilded ballroom, an idea he has been obsessed with. Originally, he stated the ballroom would cost $250 million and would be "near" the East Wing but wouldn't "interfere" with it. Now, he's updated that amount to $300 million and the East Wing ? a piece of history ? is toast. The East Wing has stood for 123 years, bearing witness to many presidents over time. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Society of Architectural Historians, and the American Institute of Architects have all spoken out against the destruction. In fact, it appears the White House may have broken the law with this unsanctioned demolition. As the National Trust for Historic Preservation noted, there are "legally required public review processes" Trump's team was supposed to go through. Yet Trump doesn't seem to care about any of that. As heavy machinery to loudly tore away chunks of the building on Tuesday, Trump told Republican lawmakers gathered on the premises: "You hear that sound? That's music to my ears; I love that sound." Not only is Trump destroying history ? he's also spending massive amounts of money. At the same time that this major construction project is underway, thousands of government workers have been laid off, the federal government is still shut down (becoming one of the longest shutdowns in U.S. history), and life-saving programs like medical research projects have seen their funding slashed. We must demand accountability now! Federal agencies must hold Trump's administration responsible for its illegal process of razing parts of the White House to the ground! Sign the petition. Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. A Typhoon Fueled by Climate Change Just Destroyed Portions of Alaska. Then Trump Opened Alaska to More Oil Drilling. Sign Now On October 11, Typhoon Halong slammed into the coast of Alaska. Houses glided away off their foundations, roads were demolished, power lines and communication lines toppled, and sanitation systems destroyed. Many communities still have no access to electricity or safe, clean water ? even weeks later. More than one thousand people and entire towns have been displaced. All this was made worse by rapidly-intensifying climate change. Yet Trump's administration just finalized its decision to allow oil and gas drilling in the unsoiled, protected lands of the Alaskan Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Experts are saying that it may take 18 months or longer for towns to be safe for residents to return to. But even once these typhoon-impacted towns are rebuilt, they will simply face the next wave of climate-induced threats ? and residents can't just rebuild forever. Climate change is not only changing the world, but it's specifically changing Alaska. Much of the state's ground has traditionally been permafrost, or land that remains frozen throughout the year. But now, that land is thawing, reeking havoc on both the ecosystems there and even on human construction. Drilling would disrupt wildlife and the environment by way of human construction, noise and light pollution, and the use of toxic chemicals. Native tribes hold these lands as sacred and are demanding continued protections for the area. Drilling would not only lay waste to beautiful portions of this irreplaceable Refuge, but it would also further commit the U.S. to dirty energy sources ? which cause and worsen climate change. This latest typhoon and the devastation it brought should make it clear that we must prioritize people and the Earth above profits. We must oppose oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and demand a workable, enforceable plan to fight climate change! Sign the petition now! Stop killer robots Message-ID: Self-directing killer drones are the arms industry's latest horror invention -- picking up where landmines dropped off. UN talks in New York right now could lead to a ban, but they need a boost of public support. Tell all governments to urgently negotiate a ban on autonomous weapon systems. Sign the petition Swarms of AI-powered drones that pick who to kill are already invading the skies over Ukraine. Unconscious, unaccountable... They're like flying landmines that kill and maim with impunity. The usual suspects oppose new international law on autonomous weapons systems (AWS), like they opposed banning landmines too. But UN talks in New York are underway right now, with momentum for a ban treaty building among states from all corners of the globe. Let's support the tireless work that human rights campaigners and diplomats are doing on the ground, and counter the merchants of war. When we get to 100,000 signatures, we'll deliver the petition in New York. Tell all government leaders: launch negotiations for a treaty to ban autonomous weapon systems. AI warfare makes the world a far more dangerous place. For one, replacing soldiers with AI-powered drones makes it easier for governments to choose to go to war. It also encourages governments and corporations to keep mining our personal data, scanning all our photos, phone calls and social media? reducing us to objects, stereotypes, and data points for killer robots to some day ?delete? at will. Advocates say AWS can boost military precision and efficiency. But military spending is through the roof, so any efficiency gains (if you can believe them!) are just fueling more warfare, not peace and human security. Their ?military precision? claims hold no water either ? and if anything, AI only increases the risks posed by nuclear weapons, by compress decision-making timelines and increasing miscalculation risks. Machines can?t make complex ethical choices, and can never be held to account. People must. Tell all government leaders: launch negotiations for a treaty to ensure human control in the use of force and to prohibit machines that target people. An amazing coalition of NGOs, academics and activists has been pushing for a binding treaty for years. The UN General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security began its 80th session on October 8, which will continue until November 7. The Committee will take action on resolutions towards the end of its session, so we have only days to influence them. Let?s show them we want a binding treaty ? not killer robots and endless wars. We need to take action NOW or it'll be too late. Sign the petition to resist Trump. Sign the petition Trump?s ally, Steve Bannon just admitted that Trump has no intention of leaving the White House in 2028. He confessed that ?there?s a plan? to get Trump a third term as President, breaking the constitutional two-term limit and putting another nail in the coffin of US democracy. This is classic Trump - float an idea that?s blatantly illegal and see if people resist or roll over. But while Trump is banking on everyone complying in advance to his absurd and terrifying idea of a third term, we can mobilise and show there?s such widespread public outrage that it will never happen. If we act together, fast, we can force politicians around the world and in the US to resist Trump?s fascism. It?s the ONLY option if we?re to stop a full-blown Trump dictatorship. Add your name to tell our leaders RESIST TRUMP, then share this petition ? when we hit a million signers, we?ll start delivering our call in person and through ads at major political summits and events worldwide: Tell our leaders to resist Trump Trump?s supporters openly musing about a third term is no surprise. In the last 9 months, Trump has repeatedly shown his disdain for the rule of law. He?s rolled out constitution-busting policies daily - detaining and deporting US residents and citizens without due process, deploying the military in US cities, manipulating global markets for his benefit, and accepting a luxury jet from the Qatari government. And the world?s richest companies - like Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft - have been helping him at every turn. Just this week, it was revealed Big Tech is donating millions to Trump?s vanity project to demolish the White House east wing to make way for a $300 million ballroom. But while Trump and his billionaire friends use their power and wealth to dismantle US democracy and fill their pockets, we?ve got something they don?t have: a movement of millions that will fight like hell to stop this slide towards fascism. High-polluting nations must take responsibility. Message-ID: High-polluting countries must provide aid after Hurricane Melissa devastated the Caribbean. One of the Strongest Hurricanes Ever Recorded Just Tore Through Jamaica. It Was Worse Because of Climate Change. Sign Now The strongest hurricane in nearly 200 years hit Jamaica this week. Moving slowly and lingering on the island, the powerful Category 5 storm flooded communities, hauled trees out of the ground, destroyed power lines, shattered windows, and tore roofs off of homes, and even caused buildings to collapse. Upwards of 530,000 people are without electricity, and nearly 15,000 people have been displaced and are now living in shelters. Four people have died. The World Meteorological Organization has called Hurricane Melissa the "Storm of the Century." Extreme winds and rainfall pummeled the whole region, leaving neighboring Caribbean countries like Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic also reeling from destruction. Floods in Haiti dragged away 25 people, who died. In Cuba, around 735,000 people have been evacuated and displaced from their homes. There's a reason Hurricane Melissa became a mega-storm, and that reason is climate change. Experts around the world are in agreement that this hurricane's brutality is almost certainly directly related to how climate change is causing ocean water to heat up dramatically. This hurricane wasn't only intense ? it also strengthened quickly. In only around 24 hours, its punishing wind speeds grew from 70mph to 140mph, doubling in speed. That's why leaders of Caribbean countries are banding together to demand proper accountability for this destruction. Since global warming made this storm so potent, these leaders are asking high-polluting, wealthy nations to help with their countries' recovery processes through debt relief and aid. Sign the petition to help elevate their request! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. The devastation was so intense because of climate change.
