Sign Now In Dorset, UK, there's a stretch of land along the coast where puffins used to nest for at least decades. But now, the puffins' numbers are dropping so quickly, they could be gone within the next 15 years. As of now, volunteers and researchers have spotted only three pairs of adult puffins. And for multiple years, there has been no sign of any babies (called "fledglings"). Two years ago, it seemed as though some parents were caring for fledglings, because they were seen bringing fish up to their carefully secluded nests. Then these deliveries suddenly stopped. Researchers concluded that tragedy had befallen the family, and that the babies must have died. So far, investigations haven't revealed any clear cause of this population decline. That worries conservationists because, if they can't find a cause for this problem, then they can't alleviate it. And that means this puffin colony will go extinct. According to Richard Caldow, a marine ornithologist: "It wouldn't take too much to push them over the edge. This may be the last chance saloon for them." Now that the colony is down to the last six adults, they can't wait any longer before receiving help. This is an existential emergency for them! Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. > News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | MAY 2, 2025 Losing Good Neighbors FOR THE SAFETY of all residents and due to an increase in ?disturbing coyote encounters,? the animals would have to be trapped and removed, an email from my apartment complex announced last June. Some of my neighbors had been sending emails detailing alarming encounters with the canids. When I heard howling or yipping at night, on the other hand, I opened my windows and listened. Access to flora and fauna was one of the reasons I chose this apartment, which sits on a large parcel of land next to a golf course and the Willamette River. Migrating geese rest on the neighboring rooftop, bald eagles perch in the Douglas fir trees, and, yes, coyotes roam the grounds. As dense human neighborhoods sprawl closer to wildlife, this type of human-nonhuman crossover in urban areas is becoming more prevalent. But this can be dangerous when we humans do nothing to understand the wildlife and expect animals to play by our rules. Earth Island?s Project Coyote estimates that half a million coyotes are killed every year in the United States, but this could be an undercount. In states like Oregon, private landowners who deem a coyote on their property to be a ?nuisance animal? can trap and remove them at any time, without a permit or the need to report it to local agencies. ?Remove? is a euphemism: These ?removed? animals aren?t let out somewhere else to frolic and live out their lives. They are killed. In her latest column, Tove Danovich writes about how many people want to move into the so-called Wildland-Urban Interface, where they can live close to nature, yet they don?t want to learn how to live with their wild neighbors. It?s hard to believe ? but France is about to bring back banned bee-killing pesticides. The Senate has just passed a law that would reauthorize neonicotinoids ? a family of ultra-toxic pesticides banned since 2018. The law was pushed through under pressure from powerful agricultural lobbies and looks like it was written personally by Bayer?s CEO. Now, the law heads to the National Assembly for a final vote in May. That means there?s still time to stop it. And local groups across France are rising up to do just that. But they need our help to fund their battle against Bayer-Monsanto and their limitless cash for lobbying. Will you chip in now to help stop this bee-killing disaster? Your donation will fund urgent action in the coming weeks and sustain campaigns to defend the environment from toxic companies like Bayer-Monsanto: I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Here?s the truth: a.. This rollback has nothing to do with protecting farmers ? and everything to do with protecting chemical company profits. b.. The science is clear: safer, effective alternatives to neonicotinoids exist. Biological control, agroecology, targeted treatments ? even for sugar beets ? have been tested and proven to work. c.. If passed, the law would reintroduce chemicals up to 10,000 times more toxic to bees than DDT. The pesticide lobby is counting on silence. Let?s show them we?re paying attention. The vote is weeks away ? and what happens next depends on us. Chip in now to fuel emergency campaigning in France before the vote and campaigns to protect nature long after. I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Your donation will help power Ek? and our campaigns worldwide fighting for people and the planet. The stakes couldn?t be higher: bees and pollinators are already in crisis ? this law could push them over the edge. And neonicotinoids don?t just kill insects. They contaminate soil, water, and even our food ? threatening human health, especially for children. Scientists are clear: viable, safer alternatives exist. This rollback is about protecting pesticide profits, not farmers. Your support will help local groups reach lawmakers, challenge false claims, and show that people everywhere stand against this toxic law. France once led the world in banning neonicotinoids. Trump Wants More Deep-Sea Mining That Helps Corporations and Threatens Ecosystems and Wildlife Sign Now The environment doesn't need any more threats to its safety, but unfortunately, this isn't its lucky day. Donald Trump just signed yet another executive order attacking the environment ? specifically, the ocean floors, where he wants to increase mining. Trump's new executive order has directed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to more quickly approve permits that allow companies to ransack seabeds for mineral extraction. Mining is an incredibly disruptive and poisonous activity. It creates all sorts of pollution ? from possible leaks of fossil fuels and toxic chemicals, to artificial light pollution, to horrible noise pollution that can throw off entire species' ability to navigate their own watery homes. The "sediment plumes" that mining creates can also smother and kill off sensitive ? and important ? habitats like coral reefs, which are already suffering. And, of course, the actual mining process itself can just directly come in and wipe out whole ecosystems. In fact, it's so damaging that upwards of 30 countries ? and even multiple auto companies, tech companies, and trade organizations for fisheries ? are calling for a pause on seabed mining. Unfortunately, multiple other tech companies and even the U.S. military are hunger for access to more minerals like cobalt, nickel, and manganese. Trump's executive order would not only hurt the Earth and the oceans, but it would also hurt all wildlife that lives there ? and humans, too. But this greedy, profit-motivated administration doesn't care. And it will keep not caring, unless it hears massive public outcry. We must protect them. Three-Quarters of Bird Species in North America Are Hurtling Towards Extinction as Populations Drop Off Sign Now Approximately 75% of bird species across the North American continent are dying off. This includes birds like sweet little chickadees, red-winged blackbirds, great egrets, little blue herons, peregrine falcons, and more. As their population numbers plummet, it shows that we are moving closer and closer to a massive extinction event. Many culprits have contributed to this problem. Climate change is disrupting their food sources and breeding grounds. Human development projects ? including clearing land for farms ? are tearing down their ecosystems. And pesticide use is poisoning them. And now, it's all set to get so much worse. Donald Trump has been hell-bent on attacking the environment and tearing apart wildlife protections. Climate Change and Energy News: Weekly Digest by CAN EECCA -------------------------------------------------- Someone forwarded this digest to you? You can subscribe using this link -------------------------------------------------- Dear subscribers, In this issue: how climate change is affecting children?s health in Tajikistan and river levels in Belarus. In the spotlight ? a stalled energy transition, mass seal deaths in the Caspian Sea, and a hydrogen sulfide release in Uzbekistan. On the global agenda ? the Trump administration?s suppression of climate reports, ?blood timber? from Colombia, and a growing crisis in the aviation industry. Plus ? a selection of current opportunities for activists, researchers, and NGOs. We?re always open to hearing your thoughts, ideas, or stories ? don?t hesitate to get in touch. Sincerely, The CAN EECCA Team -------------------------------------------------- News from the EECCA Region How climate change is stealing childhood from children in Tajikistan According to projections by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), if the average global temperature rises by 1.5?C by the year 2100, today?s children will face extreme weather events almost four times more often. If the temperature rises by 3?C, these events will occur five times more frequently, significantly affecting the lives of the younger generation. IRENA and Georgia present renewable energy transition strategy A report titled Energy Transition Assessment: Georgia highlights the country's significant untapped potential in wind and solar energy. Although Georgia?s hydropower potential is estimated at 15 gigawatts (GW), only a quarter has been developed. The assessment also identified around 4 GW of wind and 4.5 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity that remains unused. Armenia?s energy transition faces major hurdles Despite the government?s goals to increase the share of renewable energy, Armenia?s power grid remains unprepared for rapid expansion. Authorities have done little to encourage households to switch from fossil fuels to electric heating, slowing the country's energy transition. What do snowless winters mean for Belarus? Due to a lack of snowfall, Belarusian rivers are drying up. Year after year, water levels in lakes and rivers are dropping significantly. In the Rechytsa and Loyew regions, the Dnipro River can now be crossed on foot. This winter, dams in the Brest region remained closed ? without snow, there is no spring floodwater. The only visible benefit is that floodwaters no longer inundate settlements. However, ecologically, this is a dangerous trend that could have severe consequences for everyone. Uzbekistan: hydrogen sulfide release at gas field On May 5, 2025, a high-pressure gas blowout containing hydrogen sulfide occurred at Well No. 202 of the Mustaqillik-25 gas field in Surkhandarya region. Gas gushing resumed, prompting a controlled burn-off to prevent further spread. The area remains under 24/7 monitoring by the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the industrial safety agency Sanoatkontikhnazorat, and a militarized gas safety unit. More dead seals found on the Caspian coast According to preliminary estimates, the animals died two to three weeks ago. However, a full examination is impossible ? the carcasses are too decomposed for proper sampling. This marks the second mass seal die-off reported this year. Previously, dozens of dead seals were found washed ashore in the Mangystau region. Environmentalists are increasingly alarmed by the mammals? behavior. Azerbaijan proposes Caspian?Black Sea tunnel project The company ADOG and the international port of Zira have proposed the construction of an underground tunnel linking the Caspian and Black Seas. The project envisions a 10-meter diameter tunnel that would pass through Georgia or Russia. Thanks to the natural elevation difference, water could flow into the Caspian without pumps. Proponents say this could help stabilize the sea?s declining water levels, which pose increasing risks to local economies, ecosystems, and infrastructure. -------------------------------------------------- World Climate and Energy News Trump gutted two landmark environmental reports ? can researchers save them? Every four years, the US government is supposed to release a report on how climate change is affecting the nation, to guide communities and companies on how to address and adapt to a warming planet. But the sixth edition of the National Climate Assessment ? already in the works for months ? was gutted earlier this week, when US President Donald Trump?s administration dismissed hundreds of scientists helping with it. Some researchers aren?t giving up, however. They are wondering whether they could publish it anyway, through independent channels. ?Blood timber?: western firms fuel conflict and ?slavery? in Colombia Trade in uncertified hardwood illegally logged in Choc? rainforest and imported by US and Europe is financing paramilitaries, says Environmental Investigation Agency The Atrato River winds through the dense rainforest of Colombia?s Choc? region for nearly 400 miles (600km) before spilling into the Caribbean Sea. Some of these tropical forests are among the wettest on Earth. Their flooded lowlands and swollen rivers are so impenetrable they have acted as an evolutionary barrier, making Choc? a haven for rare and remarkable species found nowhere else on the planet. Aviation industry is ?failing dramatically? on climate, insiders say Professionals call for a fundamental transition including controlling flight numbers The aviation industry is ?failing dramatically? in its efforts to tackle its role in the climate crisis, according to a newly formed group of aviation professionals. JBS, the world?s largest meat processing company, is already wiping out precious Amazon rainforest to make space for more cows. Now it could take its forest-ravaging empire to terrifying new heights: it was just given the green light to list on the New York Stock Exchange. So we?re racing to launch an all-out campaign to make JBS shares too toxic to touch! For YEARS this corrupt monster has lied about how risky its operations are to drum up cash. If enough of us urgently chip in we?ll seize this moment with all eyes on JBS to expose the truth, making sure everyone knows that investing in JBS = investing in bulldozing the Amazon. Our team of researchers are ready to hit the ground running, exposing companies sourcing meat from JBS, gathering research and sharing it with investors, taking out ads blasting JBS ahead of its shareholder meeting in May, and lobbying lawmakers everywhere to win critical forest-saving protections. Vladimir, when all of us give just a little it means we can take on toxic billionaire giants ? and win. Can you urgently chip in today to save the Amazon? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Everything about JBS ? one of the worst companies on the planet ? screams risky business. It has illegally destroyed swathes of Amazon rainforest, stolen Indigenous lands, and faced corruption, bribery, and forced labour allegations. If that wasn?t enough, it?s on track to break its no-deforestation pledges?again. And with the US stock market regulator allowing this climate criminal to list on the world?s largest stock exchange, the potential for JBS to supercharge its Amazon destruction beyond repair just got real. We have to fight back ? fast ? while the world?s attention is turned on JBS and the Amazon rainforest ahead of November?s global climate meeting in Brazil. If all of us chip in a little, we could seize this moment to hit JBS from every angle with smart tactics like: a.. Targeting investors with information to resist this destruction of the Amazon rainforest; b.. Mobilizing huge public pressure on lawmakers; c.. Exposing companies linked to JBS; and derail its entire nightmarish plan ? then keep up the fight to defend the Amazon and other precious natural places from corporate raiders. A plan of this size takes massive people power, but we know that when people like us come together, we?re more than a match for billionaire companies. The conference is about the science and practice of regenerativeness in different sciences/disciplines, systems, and ecosystems. As you know, the science of regenerativeness and its practice are critical in the growing degeneration and polycrisis the world faces today. The conference has been designed to facilitate deliberation on the challenges of our beliefs in duality and certainty that have been shaping our built-in systems design in the degenerating anthropocene. AIESS Consortium invites you to this groundbreaking conference on regenerativeness. Faculty Members and Doctoral Scholars from various disciplines can contribute theoretical, empirical, case, and policy papers adopting systems science and transdisciplinary methodologies. Photo credit: On?afari-Andr? Bittar Brazil?s Pantanal is an environmental wonderland home to fascinating species like giant otters, giant armadillos, and the densest population of jaguars on the planet. But climate change and tourism are putting the world?s largest wetland in serious peril: with the land rapidly drying, record-setting fires have just killed countless animals, with some estimates in the millions. Local groups are sounding the alarm and asking for help purchasing and protecting forever an enormous tract of 326,179 acres that will prevent exploitation and save animals and communities from future disasters. So we?re partnering with Rainforest Trust to help make it happen. Together we?ve purchased and protected rainforest from Indonesia to Colombia ? and now we can do it again. Our collective donation to the project will be matched 4x, quadrupling our impact ? can you help protect the Pantanal, and power Ek?'s work to protect the planet from corporate power? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount The Pantanal isn?t as famous as the Amazon but it has become the second most popular tourist destination in South America after the Galapagos. That pressure, and the desire to install more farmland, has driven deforestation and made it increasingly hard to conserve large wilderness areas that could keep the ecosystem intact. Add climate change to the mix and the Pantanal?s survival is at stake. Just look at this year?s fires: Or what it does to local wildlife: The new Taquari Wetlands State Park would significantly expand protection for a critical wildlife corridor, allowing animals to safely travel away from the most touristed areas of the Pantanal. And support for a new local firefighting team could save literally millions of animals from future climate-change-driven fires. These chemicals are terrifying because once they?re in our bodies, they never break down, causing cancer, infertility, birth defects, and more. And it?s only getting worse. In the EU, the amount of fruit and vegetables polluted by these chemicals (called PFAS) TRIPLED in just ten years. But right now we have a chance to push for a ban on the use of PFAS pesticides in the EU. Our partners are gearing up to test hundreds of vegetables in stores across Europe to expose this chemical scandal. But they?re asking for help so they can get started right away. With all of us chipping in, we could fund these important tests, then plaster the results in the media ahead of a major EU meeting in May ? and finally force officials to act! But that?s not all. Pesticide giants are now using PFAS in their formulations, and as a result, fruit and vegetables across Europe are increasingly contaminated with toxic pesticide residues. Delicious vegetables like cucumbers, peppers, and potatoes are among the most contaminated. And many of them are believed to contain three different PFAS pesticides in a single sample. It's a public health nightmare because PFAS are extremely toxic even at low levels. Yet our governments have STILL failed to ban their use in pesticides that drench our crops every day. Now we can change that. Our friends at Pesticide Action Network Europe are ready to spring into action, testing 300 fruits and vegetables sold in shops around Europe for traces of PFAS. With all of us chipping in, we could help them start these tests right away, then expose this scandal ahead of a major EU meeting to finally FORCE our governments to take action. Sincerely, The CAN EECCA Team -------------------------------------------------- News from the EECCA Region Ukraine: Environmental damage from attacks on military facilities estimated at UAH 367 billion (about $9 billion) Colonel Yuriy Sytnyk, head of the Environmental Safety Department of Ukraine?s Ministry of Defense, stated that Russian aggression has led to massive environmental contamination: the soil and surrounding environment are polluted with construction debris, toxic substances, oil products, metals, and explosive materials. In addition, thousands of hectares of forest have burned. Central Asian countries to discuss climate change in Ashgabat From May 13?15, Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) will host the 7th Central Asia Climate Change Conference (CACCC-2025). The event is organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) together with the Government of Turkmenistan and supported by the World Bank, the Central Asia Water and Energy Program (CAWEP), the RESILAND Tajikistan project, and GIZ. Azerbaijan: Why fines don?t stop deforestation In recent years, Azerbaijan has faced a serious environmental challenge: large-scale tree felling by housing cooperatives. This reflects the destructive impact of unchecked urbanization. The fate of felled trees often remains unknown, and the Ministry of Ecology mainly issues fines instead of addressing the issue systemically. Belarus: Waste management strategy under discussion A new national strategy aims to ensure that by 2040 at least 90% of waste is reused or recycled, maintaining carbon neutrality during incineration (through either zero emissions or compensation mechanisms). Kazakhstan: Pollution, nuclear waste, and an uncertain future in East Kazakhstan Residents of East Kazakhstan region have for years complained about polluted air and water, but the situation persists. The challenge is exacerbated by the fact that major polluting enterprises are also key employers, making relocation or shutdowns politically difficult. Armenia: Dilijan faces growing climate risks According to Albert Aroyan, head of the NGO EcoPolitics, the Dilijan municipality is increasingly vulnerable to heavy rainfall, hail, floods, and forest fires. Dilijan is surrounded by a national park, making biodiversity and wildlife protection a serious concern. These threats endanger both the environment and local livelihoods. Moldova: Parliament backs energy efficiency legislation The Moldovan Parliament passed the first reading of amendments to the Law on Energy Efficiency. The goal is to ease the implementation of energy efficiency projects and improve the legal framework for Moldova?s energy transition. Notably, the bill removes the obligation for heat energy providers to participate in energy-saving measures, helping maintain affordable tariffs for consumers. Moldova: Solar panels help cut utility bills in C?u?eni Photovoltaic panels installed by the mayor?s office in Pervomaisk will power water pumps serving over 900 residents. The panels were funded by the European Village program and include smart bi-directional meters. This enables the municipality to use solar energy during the day and sell excess energy to the grid, while buying cheaper electricity at night. Ukraine and the U.S. sign new fossil fuel-related agreements Ukraine signed two commercial agreements with the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to expand the previously ratified bilateral investment fund, with a 50/50 ownership split. Kyrgyzstan to regulate import of air conditioners and refrigerants Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Mirsav Amanqulov announced that rising living standards have increased demand for air conditioners that use hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), putting strain on the power grid and harming the environment. -------------------------------------------------- World Climate and Energy News Car use and meat consumption drive emissions gender gap, research suggests The French study of 15,000 people shows men emit 26% more pollution due to eating red meat and driving more. Cars and meat are major factors driving a gender gap in greenhouse gas emissions, new research suggests. Men emit 26% more planet-heating pollution than women from transport and food, according to a preprint study of 15,000 people in France. The gap shrinks to 18% after controlling for socioeconomic factors such as income and education. Eating red meat and driving cars explain almost all of the 6.5-9.5% difference in pollution that remains after also accounting for men eating more calories and travelling longer distances, the researchers said. They found no gender gap from flying. Climate crisis threatens the banana, the world?s most popular fruit, research shows Fourth most important food crop in peril as Latin America and Caribbean suffer from slow-onset climate disaster. The climate crisis is threatening the future of the world?s most popular fruit, as almost two-thirds of banana-growing areas in Latin America and the Caribbean may no longer be suitable for growing the fruit by 2080, new research has found. Rising temperatures, extreme weather and climate-related pests are pummeling banana-growing countries such as Guatemala, Costa Rica and Colombia, reducing yields and devastating rural communities across the region, according to Christian Aid?s new report, Going Bananas: How Climate Change Threatens the World?s Favourite Fruit. Bananas are the world?s most consumed fruit ? and the fourth most important food crop globally, after wheat, rice and maize. About 80% of bananas grown globally are for local consumption, and more than 400 million people rely on the fruit for 15% to 27% of their daily calories. Dairy companies ?turning blind eye? to global methane emissions, report suggests Assessment of leading dairy and coffee shop chains reveals failure to set out methane reduction targets. Big dairy companies are ?turning a blind eye? to climate-damaging methane emissions, an assessment of the industry?s performance has found. Animal agriculture accounts for 32% of global emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas about 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, with the breeding of cattle for milk and meat a key driver. Methane has been assessed as responsible for nearly half the total global temperature rise since 1750. But since it is short-lived in the atmosphere compared with carbon dioxide, cuts to emissions have been identified as an urgent move in tackling climate breakdown. -------------------------------------------------- Opportunities Global Impact Summit 2025 in Budapest, Hungary Dates: August 28?31, 2025 Funding: Fully and partially funded spots available Deadline: May 30, 2025 Key themes of the Summit: a.. We forced Adani to cancel its plans for a $1.2 billion bond sale in 2024 ? a major financial setback! Message-ID: Dozens of suspected poachers are killed in Eswatini every year. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. > News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | MAY 16, 2025 Conservation at Any Cost? LAST SPRING, Thokozani Kunene, 25, was out walking with his father near a private game reserve near eastern Eswatini?s Big Bend, an area known for its lush forests teeming with wildlife. His father says they were taking an afternoon stroll to collect firewood when they were confronted by rangers patrolling the Mkhaya Game Reserve. Kunene was shot and killed. The rangers found a firearm in his possession after shooting him and allege that he was there poaching, though his family disputes their claims. Kunene is one of many Emaswati who have been killed in recent years by park rangers. While exact numbers aren?t available, the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs estimates that several dozen suspected poachers are slain each year. Behind each death lies a tragic truth: The people killed were never afforded the chance to defend themselves, never given the benefit of a fair trial. They were killed as suspected poachers, and the rangers who killed them were shielded by a decades? old law: the 1991 Game Amendment Act. ?This is a devastating trend that has left families broken and communities living in fear,? says Chief Mvimbi Matse of Mambane in the Matsanjeni constituency, in the Lubombo region of Eswatini. Matse says that 17 people in his chiefdom were killed by rangers between October of 2023 and October of 2024. ?We must find a way to ensure that conservation efforts do not come at the expense of human lives.? Journalist Nokukhanya Musi-Aimienoho reports on the high human cost of Eswatini?s war on poaching, and the activists pushing for change. READ MORE Photo by Vaiz Ha Let?s grow the movement! It's those shirts or leggings that are damaged or stained. They can't be donated. No one wants them. There's no clear ethical or sustainable option. So what do we do with these items? It's a recurring question, and so far, there haven't been any good choices. The problem has been getting worse over time. The fast-fashion industry pumps out approximately 100 billion clothing items every year ? a number that keeps climbing. It gets even worse when we consider what these clothes are made of. Fast-fashion garments rely predominantly on fossil fuels to create their clothing, prioritizing man-made synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon. At this point, experts estimate that 70% of clothing is made with synthetics. There's no clear way to recycle or reuse polyester and nylon clothing. It can't be composted. It's difficult to turn into rags for cleaning because it's non-absorbent. And when these items are in less-than-perfect conditions, thrift stores and charity shops don't want them. As a result, most of these worn-out clothes are either incinerated ? which is as bad for air pollution as coal-burning ? or sent off to giant landfills in the Global South. That's people are joining the #TakeItBack movement in the UK, forcing corporations to come face-to-face with the mess they've made. Customers are mailing their used synthetic garments back to the shops that sold the items and asking: "What's your plan to deal with all this waste you created?" Luckily, the EU is set to act on this crisis. It's preparing to implement something called "Extended Producer Responsibility" (EPR) within the next few years, requiring producers to take accountability for their waste. This will put the burden back where it belongs ? with the producers who created these items to begin with. The UK must follow the EU's lead and mandate EPR as well! Sign the petition now! Endangered monkeys are being trafficked to the US for biomedical research in a massive monkey-laundering scheme, according to a shocking new report. Let?s call on one of the biggest buyers to clean up its supply chain and save the wild long-tailed macaques: Sign the petition Wild, highly social monkeys are being illegally caught, shoved into cages and exported to the U.S. for animal testing ? and one of the biggest medical labs is profiting off of them. Let?s make it stop! A breaking new investigation shows how long-tailed macaques in South-East Asia are being caught in the wild, then falsely labeled as captive-bred. It?s a massive monkey-laundering scheme! This does not only threaten the survival of the species in the wild, it also poses a public health risk: wild macaques can spread deadly diseases. One of the biggest US medical labs, Charles River, says it only imports captive-bred monkeys ? but now their link to monkey trafficking is being scrutinized. Let's pile on the pressure, force them to dump the traffickers ? and save these wild macaques! Charles River Laboratories: No more monkey business ? end the illegal trade! Long-tailed macaques are the most traded, the most culled, and the most persecuted primate species in the world. Despite being endangered in the wild, they are bred in massive facilities across South-East Asia for export to biomedical labs in the US. The latest investigation by Sandy River Research shows how the numbers of exported monkeys just don?t add up with the capacity of breeding facilities in Cambodia and Vietnam, suggesting that these businesses are catching monkeys in the wild, laundering them and then selling them as captive-bred. Charles River Laboratories, one of the biggest buyers in the US, says that it puts all monkey suppliers through ?enhanced due diligence, documentation, monitoring and auditing?. But it doesn?t even list all the breeding farms from which it buys long-tailed macaques ? so how can they claim that? To make it worse, the lab was involved in a huge tuberculosis outbreak among imported macaques in 2023, and was subpoenaed by the U.S. Department of Justice in relation to its Cambodian supply chain. In other words: This monkey business is not only endangering an entire species, but posing a massive public health risk. But with this latest investigation, they?ve come under scrutiny ? let?s use this momentum and make Charles River cut wild monkeys from its supply chain, and end the illegal monkey trade for good. Amid rising tariffs and climate vulnerability, Armenia has launched its largest solar power plant, while Moldova and Kyrgyzstan receive support for green projects. Governance remains a weak point: toxic waste, lack of transparency, and disputes over resources persist. Globally, sea levels are rising, food systems are at risk, and undisclosed chemicals are being pumped into the ground. Still, there are signs of resilience ? nature-based solutions in cities and new opportunities for activists, featured at the end of this issue. We?re always open to hearing your thoughts, ideas, or stories ? don?t hesitate to get in touch. Sincerely, The CAN EECCA Team -------------------------------------------------- News from the EECCA Region Cemetery of marine life: The Caspian Sea ecosystem is collapsing under the pressure of global warming and pollution In late April, carcasses of endangered seals were once again found on the shores of the Caspian Sea ? marking the second mass die-off in the past six months. Scientists still disagree on the exact causes: trawl fishing, pollution, disease, or the sea?s shrinking due to climate change. Since 2020, the Caspian?s water level has been dropping by about 30 centimeters each year. This impacts not only oil transport and navigation but also puts fish stocks on the verge of collapse. Environmentalists are sounding the alarm over an impending ecological catastrophe. The Insider reports on what lies ahead for the Caspian and how environmental activists are pressuring regional authorities to take real action. Kazakhstan: Aktobe?s main reservoir is rapidly drying up The largest reservoir in the Aktobe region is shrinking fast. Local hunting and fishing communities believe sand mining operations are contributing to the problem. In addition, residents report that the Aktobe reservoir is being polluted by industrial waste. Tajikistan: 1,700 delegates to gather in Dushanbe to discuss glacier preservation Tajikistan is preparing to host a high-level international conference on glacier preservation, set to open in Dushanbe next Thursday. Delegates from 55 countries and dozens of organizations ? a total of 1,700 participants ? have confirmed their attendance. The conference is part of the UN-declared International Year of Glaciers? Preservation, an initiative originally proposed by President Emomali Rahmon nearly three years ago. Adaptive cities: how Kyiv is using the power of nature (ua) War hasn?t paused Ukraine?s climate challenges: heatwaves, heavy rains, flooding, air pollution, and noise continue to make daily life difficult. Yet cities like Kyiv are finding ways to adapt ? through nature-based solutions. These are simple, effective methods that harness natural processes to address environmental problems. Kyiv is already implementing such initiatives, and its experience could serve as a model for other Ukrainian cities. This article explains how it works ? and why it matters. Armenia launches its largest solar power plant, Masrik-1 (en) In just 11 months, nearly 115,000 panels were installed over 130 hectares. The 62 MW Masrik-1 plant will generate clean energy for more than 20,000 households per year and reduce CO? emissions by about 54,000 tons. The project strengthens Armenia?s energy security and brings the country closer to its goal of producing 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2030. Kyrgyzstan: Osh to receive millions in loans and grants from the EU and EBRD The Osh city administration is planning to implement a Green City Action Plan and launch a municipal project to modernize its wastewater treatment facilities. Developed in cooperation with the EBRD, the plan will include measures to ensure the city?s sustainable development, increase climate resilience, and improve residents? quality of life. Moldova: Over 9,000 energy-efficient appliance vouchers distributed under the EcoVoucher Program The EcoVoucher Program aims to support socially vulnerable consumers by enabling them to purchase modern, energy-efficient appliances. This helps reduce household energy bills while contributing to environmental protection. Belarus: Electricity prices continue to rise despite launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (be) In Q1 2025, the average price of electricity in Belarus reached 27.34 rubles per 100 kWh ? 8.9% higher than the same period in 2024 (25.11), according to an analysis by Pozirk based on official statistics. Despite government promises that the launch of the nuclear plant would lower prices, costs have continued to rise since the first reactor went online in 2020 and the second in 2023. Currently, the plant provides about 40% of the country?s electricity needs. Azerbaijan: Climate change, environmental conditions, and challenges in the energy transition Azerbaijan, whose economy heavily depends on oil and gas, faces serious climate-related challenges such as declining water resources and risks to agriculture and energy. Despite commitments under the Paris Agreement, the country?s energy transition remains limited. In 2024, renewables made up 10.6% of total energy, with only 2.9% from solar, wind, and bioenergy. Most of the increase came from a new solar power plant in Gobustan, but fossil fuel dependence remains strong. Uzbekistan: Ministry of Ecology promises public access to environmental monitoring data Uzbekistan?s Ministry of Ecology will ensure public access to a national environmental monitoring database. The system will include data on trees and saplings, logging permits, outcomes of public hearings, and environmental law violations. This is part of the country?s Environmental Culture Development Concept, approved by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on May 15, and in effect through 2030. Russia: Fuel oil scandal in the Don region ? toxic waste lies untreated for five months For nearly five months, several thousand tons of sand contaminated with fuel oil have remained at an unprepared waste site near Semikarakorsk, following a spill in the Kerch Strait. Local residents have blocked access to the site, prompting the Rostov region governor to suspend disposal activities until a safer solution is found. Despite this, the main contractor continues to accept new shipments of hazardous waste. Environmentalists warn that if the fuel oil seeps into groundwater, it could contaminate the Don River and contribute to a rise in cancer cases in the region. -------------------------------------------------- World Climate and Energy News Scientists warn: coastal areas remain at risk even if climate targets are met The world could face devastating sea level rise of several meters over the coming centuries, even if the ambitious goal of limiting global warming to 1.5?C is achieved, scientists warn. Nearly 200 countries have pledged to limit warming to 1.5?C, but researchers emphasize that this level cannot be considered "safe" for coastal populations. Their conclusion is based on recent data on how ice sheets are changing today?and how they have changed in the past. Nevertheless, experts stress that every fraction of a degree we can avoid will significantly reduce the risks. Climate crisis intensifies Europe?s ?chocolate crisis,? researchers warn According to a new report, cocoa is among six key commodities imported to the EU that are heavily dependent on countries vulnerable to climate threats. In 2023, more than two-thirds of cocoa, coffee, soy, rice, wheat, and maize imported into the EU came from countries poorly prepared for climate change, say analysts from UK-based Foresight Transitions. For cocoa, wheat, and maize, over 66% of imports came from countries with significantly degraded biodiversity. Scientists warn that the loss of biodiversity further weakens agriculture and threatens the resilience of the EU?s food systems. US oil companies inject chemicals underground without full disclosure ? despite legal requirements In Colorado, despite having some of the strictest transparency laws in the US, oil and gas firms ? including Chevron ? have injected at least 30 million pounds of chemicals into the ground over the past 18 months without fully disclosing the contents. The law, which came into effect in July 2023, requires companies to report all chemicals used and bans toxic PFAS ?forever chemicals? at drilling sites. However, by May 1, disclosures had not been filed for 675 of the 1,114 fracking locations ? more than 60% of all sites, according to the analysis. -------------------------------------------------- Opportunities CAN EECCA launches mini-grants of up to ?2,000 for NDC 3.0, Just Transition, and Local Climate Solutions The network is offering ?2,000 each to four member NGOs for projects that strengthen civil society?s role in updating national climate commitments (NDC 3.0), support a just energy transition, foster community-led initiatives, and address local climate challenges. Rhinos are an iconic species. Their continued survival is under grave threat ? especially for critically endangered species like the Javan, Sumatran, and Black rhinos. Sign this petition to demand that the South African government put more resources toward cracking down on poaching syndicates and strengthening wildlife protection laws. While there has been a decrease in poaching in KwaZulu-Natal, the crisis has only shifted to other areas, with South African National Parks seeing a shocking increase in rhino killings ? 65 rhinos in just the first quarter of 2025. Local wildlife agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are working tirelessly on the frontlines, but they cannot do it alone. She's Medically Dead. But a Hospital Is Keeping Her Body Alive to Carry a Fetus to Term, Because of the State's Abortion Ban. Sign Now Adriana Smith, a mother and nurse in the U.S. state of Georgia, was 9 weeks pregnant with her second child when she started experiencing unusually intense, painful headaches. She went to the hospital, but they simply gave her medication. The next morning, her partner noticed her "gasping for air in her sleep." He rushed her to another hospital, where doctors discovered blood clots in her brain. Doctors declared her brain-dead and medically dead. But then medical staff said they had to put the dead woman on life support to keep her body alive, and carry her fetus to term. Under Georgia's abortion-banning "heartbeat bill," they were terrified of being charged with terminating the woman's pregnancy. Medical experts agree that there is very little chance her body would be able to deliver a healthy baby, especially since she went on life support so early on in her pregnancy. Already, the fetus has fluid in its brain. As a result, doctors have warned the family that it "may be blind, may not be able to walk, [and] may not survive" after birth. Despite this, she's been on life support for 3 months, and her body has reached 21 weeks of pregnancy. Doctors plan to keep her in this condition for another 3 months. Once her body reaches 32 weeks of pregnancy, they plan to cut her open via a C-section to deliver the baby. But she is dead, unable to consent, and not aware of anything that is happening to her body. The woman's mother described it as "torture" to watch her daughter undergo this nightmare. And in the meantime, the hospital bills keep stacking up. The family has had to turn to GoFundMe to raise money to cover these costs. Georgia lawmakers must take a cold, hard look at the pain they're causing. They must stop holding this dead woman's body hostage, and reverse their grotesque "heartbeat bill"! Sign the petition! Nearly Half a Million Deaths in a Single Year Have Been Linked to Chemicals in Our Plastic Food Packaging Sign Now It turns out our food packaging may be poisoning us. Toxic chemicals known as phthalates ? often called "everywhere chemicals" by researchers due to their prevalence ? have been leaching into our food and drinks, silently invading our bodies and causing devastating health effects. A recent study linked phthalates to over 350,000 heart disease deaths in 2018 alone. The evidence is alarming. Phthalates are chemicals that make plastic soft and flexible, and they're used extensively in food packaging. They're endocrine disruptors, meaning they alter our hormones and have been linked to severe health problems including infertility, ADHD, and especially heart disease. Shockingly, despite overwhelming evidence of harm, the FDA still permits nine different phthalates to be used in food packaging. Why have corporations been allowed to poison us with dangerous chemicals for so long? Why hasn't the FDA stepped up to protect our health and safety? Enough is enough. This rich nature reserve thrives because of the Indigenous Adivasi people, who have lived there in harmony, nurturing the lands and their culture for generations. Right now, a massive military offensive has been underway across the Adivasi heartland. Over 20,000 armed personnel have been deployed, and rising casualties are being reported. Civil society is negotiating in favour of peace talks to end the violence -- but the Indian government has escalated the assault. At the same time, deforestation is also progressing aggressively and youth activists speaking out being imprisoned. Now it is even more important to call on the Indian government to respond with dialogue, to uphold the rights of Indigenous people defending their land, forests, and the constitutional promise of autonomy. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. > News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | MAY 23, 2025 Hope Amidst the Smoke IN SPRING 2019, blossom-topped hedgehog cacti lined hiking trails and abundant wildflowers swarmed islands of palo verde trees and saguaros in Arizona?s Catalina State Park. Yet many of these plants would die the following year when the 120,000-acre Bighorn Fire burned a third of this stunning Sonoran desertscrub landscape. The blaze, sparked by a lightning strike just north of Tucson, exemplifies a new dynamic of worsening desert wildfires that are impacting beloved Southwestern landscapes and endangering nearby communities. Large fires in Desert Southwest landscapes were rarely noted during the nineteenth and much of the twentieth centuries. But since 2005, nine mega-fires above 100,000 acres have burned in the Sonoran Desert and adjacent landscapes. Wildfire frequency is also increasing. In the Tonto National Forest outside Phoenix, home to vast expanses of saguaros, one study reported an approximate threefold increase in wildfires from 2000 through 2020 relative to the prior 20 years. The Southwest?s desert ecosystems are young, says desert ecologist Benjamin Wilder, director of Next Generation Sonoran Desert Researchers, a cross-discipline, multinational coalition focused on biocultural conservation. ?Things have kind of just gotten here,? he said regarding the region?s flora. With climate change, an expanding human population, and the incursion of nonnative grasses driving this new fire regime, scientists and land managers are racing to understand how the Southwest?s still-evolving plant communities are responding. Journalist Anna Marija Helt digs into the growing fire risk in the Southwest, unexpected desert resilience, and the dedicated people working to preserve this unique landscape. Siberia is currently the epicenter of the disaster. -------------------------------------------------- World Climate and Energy News Trump?s tax bill to cost 830,000 jobs and drive up bills and pollution emissions, experts warn A Republican push to dismantle clean energy incentives threatens to reverberate across the US by costing more than 830,000 jobs, raising energy bills for US households and threatening to unleash millions more tonnes of the planet-heating pollution that is causing the climate crisis, experts have warned. A major tax bill passed by the Republican-held House of Representatives on Thursday morning will, as currently written, demolish key components of climate legislation signed by Joe Biden that has spurred a record torrent of renewable energy and electric vehicle investment in the US. Tropical forests destroyed at fastest recorded rate last year The world's tropical forests, which provide a crucial buffer against climate change, disappeared faster than ever recorded last year, new satellite analysis suggests. Researchers estimate that 67,000 sq km (26,000 sq mi) of these pristine, old-growth forests were lost in 2024 ? an area nearly as large as the Republic of Ireland, or 18 football pitches a minute. Fires were the main cause, overtaking land clearances from agriculture for the first time on record, with the Amazon faring particularly badly amid record drought. Tensions rise as superpowers scrap for a piece of the Arctic As soon as Magnus M?land became mayor of a small town on Norway's northern tip in late 2023, three delegations from China came knocking on his door. "It's because they want to be a polar superpower," he says. China might not instinctively spring to mind when you think about the Arctic - but it's determined to be a big Arctic player. It's been vying to buy real estate, get involved in infrastructure projects and hopes to establish a permanent regional presence. China already describes itself as a "near-Arctic state", even though its northernmost regional capital Harbin is on roughly the same latitude as Venice, Italy. But the Arctic is fast becoming one of the most hotly-contested parts of the world. Beijing faces stiff competition from Russia, Europe, India and the US. The race for the Arctic is on. -------------------------------------------------- Opportunities Applications now open for Forbes Sustainability Leaders 2025 Forbes has announced the launch of its second annual Forbes Sustainability Leaders 2025 award, which will recognize 50 outstanding individuals making a significant impact on sustainability and the fight against the climate crisis. We're meeting at a time when not only the global mean surface temperature has reached a new high, but also the rate of the warming has been rapidly increasing. While Douglas was talking about water availability and regional perspectives on how important water is for everybody, I will provide a more global perspective on how forests and water could be relevant in this global context of increasing emergency. What is essential about the current climate situation is that not only the rate of warming has been increasing ? on this graph to the right, you can see the recent trend in the Earth's energy imbalance. It has been increasing. It has actually doubled in recent decades. But what is also important is that climate models are not able to describe it. They're failing to describe this crucial process. And then we should ask, why do we need to re-focus on forests and water? Why are we having this session today, ?Cool forests: Beyond carbon?? >From my perspective, this is a recognition of two things. First, that so far we have been largely focusing on carbon. Second, that we have overlooked something very essential. Our long-term focus on carbon reflected guidance from global climate models that for many years have been the main tool of how we understand climate. These models unambiguously tell us that that forest impacts on climate are negligible if we are talking about anything beyond carbon. You can see here a figure from a major report and these yellow marks indicate the non-carbon forest contribution to the global temperature change. It is at best a few percent of what?s really going on. We are now talking about a 1.5-degree-Kelvin warming that happened in the last century, while models say that deforestation beyond carbon could have contributed one tenth of a degree at most (and this would likely be cooling). If the models were doing fine describing climate, and as they are telling us that forests don't matter except as stores of carbon, we could hardly argue for focusing more on water and its role in climate. But the models are not doing fine. What I want to show you here is a compilation of how different global climate models predict response to deforestation in terms of how much of water vapor will be transported from the ocean. You can see that not only the magnitude of the response differs by more than an order of magnitude across models, but even the sign is not predicted. In other words, we can't know from models what happens to the water cycle if we deforest land. They don't provide any guidance. There is no robust response. Accordingly, there is a growing recognition in the scientific community that models alone may not be a trusted source of guidance concerning the climate. Here you can see quotes from high profile scientists who draw attention to the fact that our understanding of what's going on, of the key processes behind climate change, has been lagging behind formal numerical modelling. We're at the point of re-prioritizing understanding from first principles supported by empirical evidence. Analysis of multidisciplinary evidence requires clear theoretical concepts and thinking frameworks. From my perspective, one of such unifying concepts could be the idea of natural ecosystems, primarily forests that are the most productive ecosystems, serving as climate stabilizers. Their loss in the course of land use and land cover change as well as in the course of oceanic exploitation, if we are talking about the ecosystems of the ocean, has become a major driver of climate destabilization. Here we are talking not just about global warming but about destabilization in the broader sense, including the increasing frequency of droughts, floods and other water related cataclysms and long-term trends like soil moisture loss. Now let me show very schematically how the forest can enter the current vision of global warming. This is the hardcore physics part of my talk, so please bear with me for a moment; it will be just for a few minutes. In this graph to the right, you can see how air temperature depends on height in the atmosphere of the Earth. In the steady state, the Earth receives as much energy from the Sun as it releases back to space. The heat released from the Earth to space comes from the upper radiating layer, which you can think of as where the greenhouse gases molecules sit that radiate directly to space. Nobody catches this radiation and nobody resends it back to the Earth. The higher the temperature of this layer, the more heat it will release. When we add more greenhouse substances, this layer goes up. It goes up and becomes colder. At this point the Earth releases less energy than it receives and it begins to warm. This warming goes to the surface through this red line, which is the how temperature declines with height. The slope of this red line shows how fast the air temperature declines with height. We have warming until the temperature of this upper radiative layer is again equal to the equilibrium temperature. This is the classical conventional view of the greenhouse effect, which describes the impact of the increasing CO2. Now going to the central scheme, we have clouds. What do clouds do? Clouds reflect more sunlight, so they change the equilibrium temperature of this upper layer. Even if we don't change the height of this layer from which the radiation goes to space, still we can change the surface temperature by reflecting more sunlight. If there are forests and they're making clouds, then the temperature is lower and their surfaces are cooler. And if we remove forests and remove clouds, there is more sunlight absorbed and there is warming. So one thing is clouds. Second thing, you can see from the geometry that we not only can move this line, the grey one, not only can we move the blue one, but we can also move the red line, which is how the temperature changes with height when there is transpiration. Forests capture a certain part of solar energy at the surface in the form of what is called latent heat. This latent heat is then released during condensation higher in the troposphere from where it later goes unimpeded to space. Thus by transpiration forests smooth the temperature lapse rate and thus cause cooling. If we reduce transpiration, then more heat remains at the surface, the temperature lapse rate becomes steeper, and we have warming. Both effects (of transpiration and clouds) will be global and both effects will involve how forests handle water. Now let me show that both effects are very real and significant. First, if we are looking at clouds, we have evidence that the record heat in 2023 could have been facilitated by a biospheric breakdown, because we know that in this year the Amazon suffered an unprecedented drought and there were unprecedented forest fires in Canada. In both cases, transpiration and cloud formation were drastically reduced. We can see that cloud cover was reduced over the Amazon and the adjacent oceanic regions. There is an additional hotspot of cloud reduction over Canada. This is backed up by our knowledge of how efficient forests are in generating low level clouds that cool the earth. We can see that the the more productive forests are, the more efficient they are in generating clouds. While when we change them for non-forest systems the generation of cloud cover is drastically reduced. Now regarding transpiration and the role of atmospheric moisture transport. Here again we can see that energy captured as latent heat through transpiration at the surface goes up to the atmosphere and is released to space from the upper atmosphere. A new biotic pump film from Ray Asselin is available on Youtube But this process does take time. If there is a long-range regular flow of moist air from the ocean to land and back via the upper atmosphere, this heat has time to be released and thus cools the Earth. If we deforest and disrupt this long-range moisture transport, and this is what we find in observations, precipitation will be more rigorous over the deforested areas, but only locally. These more rigorous upward and downward motions will be so rapid that the heat won?t have time to be released to space from the upper atmosphere and it will return to the surface with the downdrafts. This will cause an increase in the temperature lapse rate and cause global warming. As we showed in a recent study, the models don't capture this effect, and the trend in lapse rate is indeed unexplained and it is very significant, especially over land. Thus, there are strong lines of evidence that when we deforest and when we disrupt the moisture flows associated with transpiration, this produces globally significant effects. From these more specific examples, I want to get closer to the conclusions and to the more general concepts generally for these biospheric climate regulating processes. Forests require water to function, and the capacity of forests to manage its water balance naturally declines when we begin to disturb them ? by logging, burning or disturbing them in some other ways. This leads to climate destabilization through disruption in the water cycle, which can be incorporated into the global change narrative using the notion of climate sensitivity. Climate sensitivity describes how much the planet warms if the CO2 concentration doubles. This can be calculated from models and the models differ greatly in these estimates. [You can read more about how different models describe climate sensitivity in this post.] In the current narrative, -- this will be the simpler part without formula or anything -- if this guy is CO2 and this is the Earth and this arrow is warming, the more CO2, the more warming. This is how the current narrative has it. If we include the ecosystems and incorporate the biosphere, we will see that there are different situations: sometimes it is more ?difficult? for a given amount of CO2 to warm the planet, and sometimes it is less difficult. If we destroy forests and remove their climate-regulating potential, we will get more warming and more climate extremes for the same CO2 addition. In the current narrative, we focus on decarbonization, while biodiversity and forests are a minor thing which we only consider as something of secondary importance. In the narrative that incorporates the biosphere, our key strategy is to preserve ecosystems to decrease climate sensitivity to CO2 accumulation. The more forests, functional forests, self-regenerating forests we have, the more stable our climate. [Further reading: ?Natural ecosystems and climate stabilization?] Conversely, the more we take from the ecosystem, the fewer resources it has to buffer climate extremes. If we saw this 2023 anomaly after a drought in the Amazon forest that was mercilessly plundered, especially during the Bolsonaro times with increasing logging and burning, then now if we have this large-scale deforestation project in Indonesia (MIFEE), we are explicitly asking for more acute global warming. Ironically, these terrible developments are facilitated by the carbon-focused narrative. Much of the argumentation behind this huge deforestation project in Indonesia is that they will have green fuel, like a renewable fuel, but instead this will actually destabilize our planet even further. The conclusions would be that it so happened that the evidence that we now have shows that climate science is in need of conceptual rethinking and that there is a rare opportunity that its trajectory moves towards recognizing a greater role of the biosphere. And we need to know this, how imperfect the models are and not be afraid of bringing evidence from different fields of knowledge, which people working on the ground often get, and not afraid of talking about it because the models are currently failing very spectacularly. Natural forests buffer the climate by regulating atmospheric humidity, moisture transport and cloud formation. It is crucial to stand up scientifically against large-scale deforestation projects. Also because, and it is another thing I want to mention, if we don't raise the importance of forests in the global climate agenda, we can't hope that any funding that currently goes to climate issues will go to the forests. If we demonstrate that forests are crucial players, this may totally change the flow of funds towards their preservation and restoration. Currently, the widely spread argumentation that I showed in the very beginning, that they are not contributing anything to climate except being a carbon storage, is depriving the forest topic of any significant funding, including research funding. Meanwhile, environmental stability provided by natural forests will support long term economic planning and protect investments, especially in the long term. I think that international and interdisciplinary collaboration need some clear concepts, some unifying ideas. Probably, forests as climate stabilizers could be one. Conclusions ?Climate science is at a crossroads, with a rare opportunity to shift its trajectory toward a more biosphere-oriented approach. ?Natural forests buffer the climate by regulating atmospheric humidity, moisture transport and cloud formation. ?Standing up scientifically against large-scale deforestation projects is challenging due to political and economic pressures ? but absolutely essential. ?The environmental stability provided by natural forests supports economic planning and protects long-term investments. ?International and interdisciplinary collaboration needs big unifying ideas ? forests as climate stabilizers could be one. Congress Wants to Block California From Regulating Car Emissions. Don't Let Them! Sign Now There are numerous reasons why it is important to regulate smog and emissions from vehicles like cars, buses, and trucks. Such regulations help us to fight climate change by reducing our carbon footprint, as well as reduce air pollution and, by extension, improve the well-being of humans, animals, and the surrounding environment. It even saves people money by reducing the need for more fossil fuels! That's why it's been so crucial to have California leading the way by setting the strictest emissions standards in the U.S. But of course, Trump and his cronies hate that. So the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate just voted to block California's ability to set stronger rules. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has given California waivers to set it own, stricter, standards for almost 60 years. This decision is up to the EPA alone ? not Congress. But Republicans are so incensed by the idea of protecting the environment and public health, they're trying revoke California's ability to use these waivers. With climate change worsening year after year, we don't have any time to lose when it comes to reducing our carbon emissions. Vehicles are one of the top contributors to climate change around the globe, including in the U.S. ? one of the most carbon-emitting countries in the world. Additionally, loosening emissions laws would mean millions of children and families face the horrible effects of worse air quality. Even worse, air pollution disproportionately impacts communities of color, saddling them with a public health crisis. Luckily, California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared: "We won't stand by as Trump Republicans make America smoggy again... We're going to fight this unconstitutional attack on California in court." Chip in today to make it happen: I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount -------------------------------------------------------------------- This is mind-blowing: there?s a place in the Amazon that scientists argue has more species per square kilometer than anywhere else on the planet. Ferocious jaguars, emerald green boas, powerful harpy eagles, shy tapirs, and more?all sharing the same forest home (see lots of pictures below!!) But Vladimir, this pinnacle of biodiversity is under critical threat: the mouth of Ecuador?s Anzu River has been included in a concession to a gold mining company, TerraEarth. The only way to stop a mine from being ripped into the heart of this paradise is to buy the surrounding land, ensuring the company can?t get the legally-required permissions from landowners?because the landowners would be *US*. Actually, we?d help our local partner, Khamai, buy the land and incorporate it into the neighbouring Pitalala reserve. The newly expanded reserve would be a haven for nature and scientific research, a rewilded paradise protected forever. If we can act fast. Our partners are in touch with the landowners and have the opportunity to acquire the land before the miners do (they prefer the land conserved!) ? but only if we act now. This is what this incredible area should look like, pristine and untouched ? the part of the reserve that already exists: But the surrounding land is being devastated: And it?s happening fast: It?s hard to find a more obvious case for urgent conservation action. The place that might have more species density than anywhere else on Earth vs total devastation to mine gold. And we have great partners to do it. They?ll also work to restore land that has already been damaged, and eventually to get UNESCO protection status for this irreplaceable piece of the planet. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | MAY 30, 2025 We Can Do Better It is hard these days to feel like the work I?m doing matters. Instead of sitting behind a desk, shouldn?t I be out there, putting my body on the line as young students get locked up for simply speaking up, as children get torn from parents who are disappeared to prisons overseas, as even sitting judges get arrested on trumped-up charges? I grapple with this question all the time as the Trump administration wages an increasingly cruel war against the people of this nation. But then I get to editing stories like our Summer print issue cover feature by Hannah Palmer, about how her search for swimmable waters in the US South led to her discovery of the region?s environmental history, its water policy, and the racial politics of public spaces. And Eric Freedman?s profile of researchers who dedicate their lives to seeking out and helping save previously unknown species. And Viola Kerekes? account of her work with a herd of the last wild horse species left on Earth, which includes this incredible factoid ? she knows the nearly 300 horses in the herd by name. Stories like these remind me that there are people out there still working away in their own spaces to better this world. They remind me of what legendary writer-activist James Baldwin said in reference to the power of individuals to create positive change and inspire others: ?The world is held together, really it is held together, by the love and the passion of very few people.? And they remind me, also, of the value of bringing these narratives to you. Storytelling, after all, is such an integral part of being human. Stories allow us to share information in ways that help us make sense of the world around us and of our place in it. None of the features in our new issue (which we will start rolling out online next week) deal directly with the massive negative impact the new political regime is having on just about every aspect of our lives, climate and environment included. But in some ways, that omission in itself is an act of resistance. Why give oxygen to narratives of fear that are already circulating out there, that breed division and isolation at a time when we should be building community and fostering hope for the future? While the Journal doesn?t hesitate to ring the alarm bell when needed, perhaps our role during these dark days is to ensure we tell more stories that show us that good persists, love persists ? and that simply doing what you love can also be a form of resistance. * After two-and-a-half years as the Journal?s associate editor, Brian Calvert has moved on to a staff reporter and contributing editor position at Civil Eats, a publication we admire and have had several collaborations with. Billy and Tina the Elephants Have Been in Captivity at the LA Zoo for Decades. Send Them to a Sanctuary! Sign Now Billy the Asian elephant was only 4 years old when he was sold and shipped from Malaysia to Los Angeles. At that point, 36 years ago, he became a captive resident at the city's zoo ? and he's been there ever since. Now, he lives with companion Tina, a 59 year old elephant. But their time in zoos seems to be nowhere near over. After the LA Zoo euthanized their two other aging herd members, it is planning to send them to yet another zoo in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Zoos are extremely stressful environments for elephants. Elephants are intelligent, social creatures who recognize each other's calls, assign individual specific names to members of their herds, mourn their dead, and show incredible empathy and self-awareness. Trapped in spaces significantly smaller than the 2.7 million acres they need to roam in the wild, they become distressed, disturbed, and physically unhealthy. Living in captivity cuts their lifespan, on average, by around 30-45%, and leaves them vulnerable to chronic health conditions. For all these reasons and more, Tina and Billy do not belong at the LA Zoo ? or at any zoo at all. As the pop singer and icon Cher has said: "Billy and Tina have served their time in confinement... They deserve the chance to live out their lives in peace and dignity." Help us stand with Cher and countless other advocates by urging the City of Los Angeles to release Billy and Tina from this ongoing cycle of captivity! Sign the petition to demand it sending them to a reputable sanctuary instead! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Now, some countries want to make it legal and overturn the global ban on ivory trading. Protect elephants and demand the ivory trade ban remains in place! Sign the petition Elephants are being slaughtered so their tusks can be turned into trinkets. And now, some governments want to make it legal. Japan and South Africa are pushing to overturn the global ivory trading ban and reopen the market for elephant tusks. 20,000 African elephants are illegally killed each year for their tusks. A legal ivory trade could wipe out endangered populations. In just a few months world leaders will gather at the Endangered Species Convention and the ivory ban is on the agenda. To make sure it?s kept in place let's build a massive wave of public pressure and show them that millions want to protect elephants. Sign the petition: protect elephants ? keep the global ivory trading ban. Forest elephants are gentle, intelligent beings who form lifelong family bonds, and even mourn their dead. But their populations in Africa have already declined by 90% because of illegal poaching that turns their beautiful tusks into art and jewellery. Instead of enabling legal ivory trading, conservation efforts should be going towards protecting endangered elephant populations, tackling habitat loss and planning for human and elephant co-existence. These solutions would also provide jobs for locals and create sustainable tourism opportunities. Add your name and demand the global ivory trade ban stays in place. We?ve stopped this type of cruelty before?let?s do it again and protect the world?s last elephants before it?s too late. Sign the petition Thanks for all that you do, Nish, Danny and the team at Ek?
