                        A recent study has revealed a shocking imbalance in 
global conservation funding ? critically important but less "fashionable" 
species like invertebrates, plants, and smaller mammals receive only a 
fraction of the support they desperately need. This disparity in funding 
accelerates the extinction crisis, with nearly 94% of threatened species 
receiving no support. From freshwater snails to reptiles, these 
often-overlooked species need our protection and urgent funding if we are to 
avoid an irreversible collapse of biodiversity.



                        Sign the petition to urge the United Nations 
Environment Programme (UNEP) to champion fairer, science-driven conservation 
funding for all species.



                        The study, conducted by experts from the University 
of Hong Kong, found that the vast majority of conservation funds ? 82.9% ? 
are allocated to vertebrates, with a staggering 85% of those funds going to 
birds and mammals. This leaves plants, invertebrates, and other crucial 
species like amphibians and rodents severely underfunded. By shifting the 
focus of global conservation efforts to include all species, UNEP can help 
pave the way for a more inclusive and balanced approach to saving our 
planet's most vulnerable life forms. Sign the petition to demand that UNEP 
lead the charge for a fairer, more equitable distribution of conservation 
funds, ensuring that all species receive the attention and protection they

            2026 United Nations Water Conference

            Special Accreditation for Non-Governmental Organizations and 
Other Relevant Stakeholders (First Round)

            Apply by 21 March 2025

            Background

            The high-level 2026 United Nations Water Conference to 
Accelerate the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6: Ensure 
availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all will 
be held in the United Arab Emirates from 2?4 December 2026, co-hosted by 
Senegal and the United Arab Emirates.

            The Conference will consider challenges to achieving SDG 6 as 
well as opportunities and innovative ways to support its implementation and 
accelerate progress. Participants will exchange views, develop initiatives, 
and identify actions to advance SDG 6, including cooperation at all relevant 
levels to enhance means of implementation and partnerships. The Conference 
will also highlight gender perspectives and empowerment of women and girls 
in ensuring safe drinking water and sanitation for all.

            The Conference will result in a summary of the proceedings of 
the Conference, to be prepared by the Presidents of the Conference, as its 
outcome document. The summary will also serve as an input to the UN 
High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

            Additionally, the Conference will offer an opportunity to share 
best practices in accelerating SDG implementation?including those included 
in the Water Action Agenda?and will invite Member States and other 
stakeholders to announce voluntary commitments in support of the Conference 
objectives. Members States decided that the 2026 Conference should build on 
the discussions held during the UN 2023 Water Conference.

            The 2026 UN Water Conference will be comprised of plenary 
sessions and six interactive dialogues (A/RES/78/327). The Conference 
secretariat, UN-DESA, will prepare a background note on potential themes of 
the interactive dialogues, based on the inputs of Member States, the UN 
system, and a wide range of other stakeholders. The themes of the 
interactive dialogues will be adopted by the UN General Assembly at a 
one-day meeting to be convened by the President of the General Assembly on 9 
July 2025.

            Which stakeholders can participate in the 2026 UN Water 
Conference?

            Participation of representatives from non-governmental 
organizations, major groups and other relevant stakeholders at the 2026 UN 
Water Conference is guided by A/RES/78/327.

            Organizations that fall under the following categories will be 
able to request registration to attend the 2026 UN Water Conference and its 
preparatory meeting.

            1. Non-governmental organizations and major groups identified in 
Agenda 21 and other stakeholders in consultative status with ECOSOC. You can 
check if your organization has consultative status with ECOSOC here.



            2. Organizations that were accredited to previous United Nations? 
conferences as per A/RES/78/327.



            Special Accreditation Process

            As guided by resolution A/RES/78/327other relevant 
non-governmental organizations, including civil society organizations, 
academic institutions, the scientific community, the private sector and 
philanthropic organizations whose work is relevant to the Conference and are 
not in consultative status with ECOSOC or accredited to the previous United 
Nations Conferences mentioned above, must receive special accreditation in 
order to participate in the Conference and the preparatory meeting as 
observers.

            This round of special accreditation will be conducted on the 
Civil Society Platform, one of the latest initiatives from the UN Department 
of Global Communications (DGC) designed to streamline engagement processes 
for civil society organizations.

            Applications will be reviewed on the basis of their background 
and involvement in the implementation and follow up of SDG 6. The President

basis. Approved organizations will be notified by the Secretariat after 
Member States review.

            Once an organization or entity receives special accreditation, 
it will be able to register representatives to participate at the 2026 UN 
Water Conference and its preparatory meeting.

                        This time, In a total villain move, Donald Trump has 
frozen all offshore wind projects. And he did it at two donors' request.

                        This reckless and corrupt decision threatens the 
nation's climate goals, puts thousands of clean energy jobs at risk, and 
forces states to rely on polluting fossil fuels to meet their energy needs.

                        The consequences of Trump's decision are dire. 
Climate change continues to worsen every year, and humans are feeling the 
intensifying effects through wildfires, hurricanes, drought, heat waves, and 
more.

                        We absolutely must prioritize switching to 
sustainable energy sources as fast as possible. But instead, Trump wants us 
to move backwards, further into the arms of the oil and gas industries, 
further committing us to their dirty and polluting consequences.

                        States like New York and New Jersey had set 
ambitious plans to transition to renewable energy, relying on offshore wind 
to meet their targets. New York alone planned to generate 9,000 megawatts of 
offshore wind power by 2035 ? enough to power millions of homes with clean 
energy. Fully implementing offshore wind projects along the East Coast would 
cut carbon emissions by 50 million tons annually. This is the equivalent of 
shutting down 131 gas-fired power plants.

                        But two of Trump's wealthy donors, both with 
interests in fossil fuels, didn't want offshore wind farms near their 
properties.

                        Congress must act immediately to override this 
reckless decision and pass legislation requiring offshore wind expansion.

wind energy and secure a cleaner, more sustainable future!

                        Though the level of cruelty varies, in every 
situation where an animal's worth is tied up with profit, exploitation and 
abuse can be found. We see it in commercial dog breeding, horse racing, 
dogfighting, and of course, greyhound racing.




                        Greyhounds are forced to horrific physical limits to 
win races and rake in the profits for owners and gamblers. They are often 
kept kenneled for 23 hours a day, muzzled to the point of mental and 
physical turmoil so that they will submit.



                        Senseless killings are not uncommon in the 
industry ? from puppies deemed unfit to train, to dogs with minor injuries 
deemed too expensive to treat, to dogs that have aged out of competing.



                        If a greyhound isn't making money anymore, the 
industry has no issue killing them off.


                        But a huge victory has just been won for these 
innocent dogs: Wales has announced plans to ban cruel greyhound racing 
forever!



                        While this will save countless greyhounds from lives 
of immense suffering, Wales is the only country within the United Kingdom to 
take this step so far, meaning England and Scotland will still allow the 
disgraceful 'sport' to carry on. We must keep up the momentum and put the 
pressure on.




                        Please join us in the fight for a more 
compassionate, safe world for greyhounds. Sign the petition and demand that 
lawmakers in both England and Scotland move to end greyhound racing once and 
for all!

                                In early January, as we began to work in earnest on our Spring 2025 print issue, wildfires were raging across Los Angeles, a city I once called home. The devastation left in their wake is staggering. At least 29 people died. An estimated 16,000 structures burned, including thousands of homes. Tens of thousands of people were displaced, and financial losses piled up to over $250 billion.

                                All of this breaks my heart. But what haunts me most are the stories of the people with disabilities who lost their lives in the blazes. One of them was Anthony Mitchell Sr., 67, an amputee who used a wheelchair to get around. Another was his son, Justin Mitchell, 35, who had cerebral palsy and also used a wheelchair. Both died in Altadena in the Eaton Fire while awaiting evacuation support. The third was Rory Sykes, 32, who also had cerebral palsy and was blind as well. He died in Malibu in the Palisades fire while his mom was seeking help.

                                Their deaths are tragic, and they are not the exception: People who have disabilities are up to four times more likely to die in natural disasters than those who do not. Yet, as Kang-Chun Cheng writes in a feature in the issue (?Overlooked?), more often than not, they are excluded from disaster preparedness plans and decision-making processes. This holds true globally, including in South Sudan, where Cheng reports on the fierce advocates who are struggling against the toughest odds to mend a broken disaster preparedness system.


                                Sadly, this type of work isn?t getting easier, in South Sudan or elsewhere. In part, that?s because here in the United States ? the second biggest carbon polluter in the world ? President Donald Trump is dismantling environmental safeguards and federal aid agencies one executive order at a time, even as Americans are struggling through devastating natural disasters. Among far too many other things, he is also gutting USAID, which supports climate adaptation work, public health initiatives, and disaster recovery around the globe.


                                As Trump pulls the rug out from beneath the most vulnerable both at home and abroad ? and plunges the US into a constitutional crisis in the process ? it can be hard to keep track of all the harm. That?s part of the point. But as Lauren Markham suggests in her essay ?Remembrance in the Anthropocene,? while we should grieve, and honor, what is being lost, we should try to transform our despair into action.


                                Kumi Naidoo, the head of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, echoes this sentiment (Conversation). ?Everybody understands loss,? he says, and that makes it a powerful emotion, one that might offer an entry point to advocacy.


                                Grief, rage, love, even fear ? we need to harness every emotion, every tool, we have to lift up those most vulnerable to the crises unfolding around us. Like Naidoo, we too, must ?refuse to accept that the world we live in right now is the best that humanity can create for itself.?

                        The Trump administration has launched a reckless assault on America's federal forests, ordering the mass destruction of 280 million acres of public land for timber production. This includes trees that are considered deeply important for their ecosystems.

                        This catastrophic decision benefits corporations at the expense of our environment, and it also blatantly disregards the Endangered Species Act. In the process, it threatens the survival of countless vulnerable animals, including grizzly bears, spotted owls, and wild salmon.

                        Under this executive order, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management are being pressured to increase logging quotas and bypass critical environmental protections.

                        The destruction of these forests will accelerate climate change by eliminating vital carbon sinks. On top of that, it will also pollute rivers and water supplies, degrade recreational areas, and push endangered species closer to extinction. And, this will worsen wildfires by drying out forest floors, eliminating older and more fire-resistant trees, and disrupting ecosystems.

                        To make matters worse, Trump has appointed a former timber executive to lead the Forest Service, ensuring that corporate profits will come before conservation.

                        Sign the petition to help us demand that the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management resist these unlawful orders, uphold their legal obligations under the Endangered Species Act, and put the preservation of our nation's forests before corporate greed.

                        The average American is facing an uncertain economic future, in large part due to Trump's harmful policies. Tariffs are raising prices, federal layoffs are increasing unemployment, and cruel deportations are putting entire industries at risk.



                        Yet, billionaire Jeff Bezos, instead of helping, is spending his immense wealth on sending celebrities to space.



                        Bezos is using his space company, Blue Origin, to launch popstar Katy Perry and others (including his girlfriend) on extravagant, pointless trips. Blue Origin is vague and secretive about the cost of these trips, but expert analysis and competitor comparisons put the estimate in the millions. While average Americans struggle, Bezos wastes his fortune on space tourism, a luxury the rest of us can only dream of. His ties to Trump, including his million-dollar inauguration donation, only add to the outrage.

                        The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is supposed to protect the public from financial deception and corporate misconduct. Instead, under Trump, it's doing the bidding of fossil fuel billionaires by allowing oil and gas companies to hide their greenhouse gas emissions ? shielding their role in the climate crisis from public view.

                        This is blatant corruption. For years, the SEC required major corporations to disclose their environmental impact, ensuring transparency for investors and the public. But now, after just weeks in office, Trump's SEC has caved to oil and gas executives ? including two of his biggest donors ? by suspending a rule that forced energy companies to report their emissions.

                        Fossil fuel billionaires spent millions to get Trump elected, and now they're reaping the rewards. Along with Trump's new Energy Secretary, Chris Wright, they've worked relentlessly to dismantle accountability measures that expose their industry's climate destruction. And now, they've secured exactly what they paid for: a government that protects polluters instead of people.

                        This decision is not just morally reprehensible ? it's also financially reckless. Climate change is one of the biggest economic risks of our time, and even major financial institutions support disclosure rules to assess long-term threats. Worsening droughts, food insecurity, wildfires, and extreme weather aren't distant concerns ? they're happening right now, and intensifying with each passing year.

                        Donald Trump's tariffs are a disaster for consumers everywhere.


                        Trump claims that imposing tariffs on imports from countries like Mexico, Canada, and China will help U.S. businesses and manufacturing. But in reality, they only lead to higher costs for everyday consumers and create confusion and friction along supply chains, putting a strain on families and businesses alike.



                        Tariffs are essentially taxes that U.S. businesses have to pay, and those costs are passed on to consumers. Prices are expected to rise on everyday items ? fresh produce from Mexico, oil from Canada, and electronics from China. Tariffs are making things worse at a time when families can least afford it!

                        In addition to hurting consumers, tariffs are causing conflict between countries. Trump is making other countries feel threatened and insulted, leading to retaliatory tariffs that hurt consumers abroad and put the U.S. at dangerous odds with its allies.

Prepared under auspices of the project ?Transparency at scale: digital solutions for trust - resilience and sustainability? back in 2023, this Recommendation has emerged in response to an increasing demand for policy action to enhance the trustworthiness, accuracy, and verifiable integrity of sustainability product claims and corporate disclosures. The Recommendation aims to provide guidance to countries on the implementation of scalable supply chain traceability, transparency and trust frameworks that will enhance sustainability and resilience. The comments received will be  consolidated and reflected in the final draft of the Recommendation, scheduled to be submitted to the 31st UN/CEFACT Plenary of 3-4 July 2025 at Palais des Nations in Geneva, for discussion and adoption by member States.  



You may recall that this topic has been considered during the thematic session on access to information at the twenty-sixth meeting of the Working Group of the Parties, International Workshop on Access to Product Information and ninth meeting of the Task Force on Access to Information.

      $200 billion annually by 2030* for biodiversity, disagreements over
      financial structures remained unresolved. Instead of deciding on a
      dedicated biodiversity fund, countries agreed to *assess and reform the

                                Don't Wait for Rock Bottom

                                During a staff lunch at Earth Island Institute earlier this week, a Latinx colleague talked about how she had spent several days anxiously hunting for her misplaced US birth certificate before finally locating it. ?Imagine if someone who looks like me can?t produce it when asked,? she told a group of us, grimacing. We shook our heads silently, at a loss for words.

                                That same evening, at my kids? gymnastics class, I overheard one mother saying she had lost her job as an international public health expert, the direct result of the Trump administration?s dismantling of USAID. ?It?s so weird to have to keep going as though things are normal,? she said, as I offered her my sympathies.

                                Meanwhile, my neighbor across the street, who works in the federal government, is watching the axe fall on colleagues and wondering if she will be next. And a scientist friend who works on women?s health tells me her research grants are on hold and might be canceled.

                                It has not even been a full seven weeks, and already evidence of the pain and suffering Donald Trump and his gang have unleashed is reaching me not only through the headlines but in people?s lives around me. I?m surely not the only one worried about where this leads.

                                ?We're not at rock bottom yet, but we are certainly falling towards it very quickly,? sociologist Dana Fisher, who I interviewed on Terra Verde today, told me. Having studied social movements opposed to tyranny, she said she knows that the darkest times, when the sense of personal risk becomes near universal, create solidarity across the social spectrum. ?That's when we do our best work as a people.?

                                It was meant as a message of hope, but it pained me to hear that more people will have to suffer, and more damage done, before we can find our way through these awful times. Still, like Fisher, I?m holding out hope that each of us will find in this moment an opportunity to build power where we are, and build it fast.                         It's nice to be able to share some happy news about wildlife conservation. In Australia, the rare, small, chunky Baw Baw frogs were once on the edge of extinction. Out of the 38 frog species living in Victoria, Australia, the Baw Baw was one of the most rare.



                        They used to thrive in eastern Victoria in Australia, but recently their population plummeted by around 98%. Up against the threats of fungal infections, climate change, human construction, and deforestation, the little frogs couldn't cope. As of now, fewer than 500 members of this species are still alive in the wild.



                        Now, scientists with Zoos Victoria have led a massive effort to rebuild their population and save their species! Through a careful, painstaking breeding program, the researchers conducted a variety of smaller reintroduction programs.



                        When those went well, they scaled up their efforts, leading to their current project, in which they released around 3,000 froglets ? tiny little beings the size of a grain of rice ? as well as 40 adult frogs into the wild.



                        Seeing these scientists' dedication and commitment is truly inspiring. This is the kind of wildlife protection we need to encourage going forward! That's why we're asking the Australian government to increase its funding for wildlife conservation programs.                         A recent SpaceX Starship rocket explosion in Texas 
resulted in fiery debris falling from the sky, causing serious safety 
concerns for both the public and the environment. The launch, which was the 
eighth test of the massive Starship, saw the uncrewed spacecraft explode 
shortly after takeoff. While no immediate injuries were reported, the danger 
posed by falling rocket debris forced the temporary grounding of flights at 
multiple Florida airports and triggered warnings across the Caribbean. This 
is the second consecutive failure of this test flight, and it raises serious 
questions about the safety of SpaceX's operations.

                        South Carolina just executed a man by firing squad. 
This violent state-sponsored killing is a horrifying reminder of the 
brutality of the death penalty ? a punishment that still exists in most U.S. 
states.



                        Warning: disturbing details follow.



                        Brad Sigmon was forced to choose how the state would 
kill him: by being electrocuted in a chair, chemically suffocated by lethal 
injection, or shot to death. Given the options, a firing squad actually 
seemed less traumatic to him by comparison.

                        Sigmon's execution was not swift, painless, or 
humane. He was brought to the state's death chamber, where he was strapped 
into a chair above a basin to collect blood. Once there, officials pulled a 
hood over his head and marked a target on his chest. Witnesses flinched as 
gunshots rang out from three volunteer executioners, watching his body 
convulse as bullets ripped through him. His arms tensed, he gasped for air, 
muscles peaked out of his wound, and a red stain spread across his chest 
before he finally died.

                        This was not justice ? it was a spectacle of 
suffering. And it will happen again unless we take action now. The state of 
South Carolina has made clear that it will continue this barbaric practice, 
with executions planned every five weeks. There are still 28 people on death 
row, awaiting a fate that no human being should endure.

                        The death penalty is not only cruel and inhumane, 
but it is also deeply flawed. Innocent people have been executed, and the 
system is riddled with errors. On top of that, racial and economic 
disparities plague the U.S. policing system, court verdicts, and judges' 
sentencing choices. Even former executioners have come forward to say the 
death penalty is nothing more than legalized torture.


                        Sign this petition to call for an immediate halt to 
all executions and to demand that lawmakers abolish the death penalty in the 
U.S. once and for all.

                        The Trump administration has launched a reckless 
assault on America's federal forests, ordering the mass destruction of 280 
million acres of public land for timber production. This includes trees that 
are considered deeply important for their ecosystems.

                        This catastrophic decision benefits corporations at 
the expense of our environment, and it also blatantly disregards the 
Endangered Species Act. In the process, it threatens the survival of 
countless vulnerable animals, including grizzly bears, spotted owls, and 
wild salmon.

                        Under this executive order, the U.S. Forest Service 
and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management are being pressured to increase 
logging quotas and bypass critical environmental protections.

                        The destruction of these forests will accelerate 
climate change by eliminating vital carbon sinks. On top of that, it will 
also pollute rivers and water supplies, degrade recreational areas, and push 
endangered species closer to extinction. And, this will worsen wildfires by 
drying out forest floors, eliminating older and more fire-resistant trees, 
and disrupting ecosystems.

                        To make matters worse, Trump has appointed a former 
timber executive to lead the Forest Service, ensuring that corporate profits 
will come before conservation.

Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management resist these unlawful orders, 
uphold their legal obligations under the Endangered Species Act, and put the 
preservation of our nation's forests before corporate greed.

                        A promise to phase out toxic lead shot in the UK has 
failed, resulting in continued harm to wildlife and the environment. Despite 
a pledge by the UK's leading shooting organizations to phase out lead shot 
by 2025, a recent study has shown that lead ammunition is still being widely 
used, and it is having devastating consequences for both animals and humans. 
It's time for the government to step in and enforce a full ban on lead 
ammunition to protect wildlife, the environment, and public health.

                        The voluntary transition away from lead ammunition 
was intended to reduce the amount of toxic lead entering our environment,

pellets. Birds often mistake these toxic pellets for seeds, leading to lead 
poisoning. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust estimates that lead poisoning

            Now, Grupo Profand is trying to pick up where they left off. If we don?t act now, they?ll use this lab to build the blueprint for mass-producing octopuses in cruel, unnatural conditions. If enough of us raise a global outcry, we can shut this down before it begins, just like we did with Nueva Pescanova.

            Grupo Profand: Shut down the baby octopus lab

            This new lab will experiment on baby octopuses by manipulating their larval development, a critical hurdle that has prevented octopus farming from scaling up. This is how factory farming starts. First, they figure out how to breed animals in captivity, then they scale up to mass production, locking intelligent beings into a life of suffering for profit.

            Grupo Profand claims this is about ?sustainability??that farming octopuses will ease pressure on wild populations. But factory farming is never the answer, and octopuses are sentient creatures who use tools, solve puzzles, and even dream.

            Let?s make one thing clear: Grupo Profand isn?t running this lab for conservation or science; they?re engineering a supply chain. If we don?t stop it now, octopuses will become the next victims of industrial farming.

            This is the moment our movement was made for?and we know we can win because we?ve done it before. When California passed a landmark law banning octopus farming, our global outcry helped make it happen. And when hundreds of thousands of us spoke out against Nueva Pescanova?s plans, we pushed their project into total deadlock.

            Now, it?s time to do it again, before Grupo Profand turns factory-farmed octopuses into reality.

                                ONE MONTH BEFORE I left for the Peace Corps in August 1992, an unexpected visitor arrived at the Powers Ranger District office in the Siskiyou National Forest (now Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest). A man visiting the forest had found a bird unable to fly along the paved road adjacent to the South Fork Coquille River.

                                ?It?s very unusual looking,? he said before opening the box in which he?d transported it to our office. ?Got funny feet, all black and white, and I don?t know, it?s just a bit strange.?

                                As I listened to his story, I felt a familiar sinking feeling. People regularly brought in birds they?d found in the forest. Maybe they were owls or song- birds, frequently hit by cars or, like this one, just ?sitting there? along the road. Maybe a young robin, or a young wren, or one of the many summertime sparrows had left the nest too soon with shaky flying abilities. Perhaps a spotted towhee, a species that is often in low shrubs, had made an ill-timed dash from one side of the road to the other. No matter the circumstances, the rescuers always expected us to save the bird.

                                Much to my surprise, the bird on this day was not a robin or a sparrow. It also wasn?t a wren or a Steller?s jay or a towhee. In fact, it wasn?t any kind of a songbird. The black-and-white youngster offering high-pitched chirps from the bottom of the box was a marbled murrelet.

                                We live in a difficult time, a time when it seems as if governments have lost their minds and refuse to see our changing climate. There is probably not a single country that is not rolling back some of its environmental and nature conservation policies. It is thus all the more critical to support each other and continue this important work.

                                  
                                We are pleased to share some exciting news with you. At the start of this year, we registered a branch of our organization in Ukraine. This development will enable us to participate officially in domestic efforts to overcome the war?s environmental consequences as well as to advocate for the nation?s green recovery. Read on to learn about a new way for you to participate in our work!

                                  
                                While Ukraine remains at the heart of UWEC Work Group, our initiative includes the analysis of the transboundary impacts of the war. Over the course of January and February, UWEC expert Eugene Simonov spoke with over 20 international news organizations about the role of the ?shadow fleet? in the catastrophic mazut (a Russian blend of heavy fuel oil) spill in December 2024 that created an environmental disaster in the Black Sea.                                 The spill?s consequences are a significant threat to Black Sea ecosystems. Numerous deaths of marine mammals (porpoises and dolphins) and birds have already been confirmed, while the long-term impacts to fish and other ichthyofauna is difficult to predict. The spill is already harming the region?s protected areas, including Ramsar Convention sites. It is not expected that the Russian government will take correct actions to limit the effects of the disaster. Spill pollution has already reached the shores of other Black Sea states, and as seawater temperatures rise, mazut slicks will once again appear on the surface and pollute the entire Black Sea coastline.                                 The Kerch mazut spill is not the first event to cause direct and indirect harm to the Black Sea. While the sabotage of the Kakhovka hydropower dam occurred in June 2023, analyses of its impacts are only now becoming available. In this UWEC Work Group issue, we examine the limited field research that is now underway behind the front lines in Ukraine, with the left bank of the Dnipro River inaccessible to researchers as a result of Russian occupation. We will only see the full picture after the war ends and lands are freed from occupation. UWEC expert Oleksiy Vasyliuk examines how the Kakhovka reservoir?s silts spread during the June 2023 flood and discussed an initial analysis of soil pollution as a result of the dam?s destruction:

                                Understanding the development and implementation of compensation mechanisms for war crimes, including environmental crimes, is one of today?s most complicated challenges. Legal experts hope that this process will enable work to facilitate international recognition of ecocide.                                 Understanding these environmental processes and even more so the implementation of ?green recovery? programs will require significant financial investment. Ukraine?s war-torn economy will certainly not be able to shoulder the entire burden, and it will require the help of allies and partners. International American programs had a large stake in the country?s recovery initiatives. However, the Trump administration has ended a great many of them. UWEC journalist Viktoria Hubareva examines how the end of financial aid from the United States has affected environmental initiatives in Ukraine:

                                News from the EECCA Region








                                Time is Running Out: Why Countries Are 
Delaying Their Climate Commitments?
                                We have checked the new NDC submissions, but 
haven't found any from our countries. CAN EECCA expresses serious concern 
about the low level of climate ambition in EECCA countries. To achieve 
climate neutrality, civil society must increase pressure on authorities. 
Special attention is given to Central Asian countries, which show extremely 
low adaptation levels despite significant risks to water resources and the 
agricultural sector.


                                Uzbekistan joins the Aarhus Convention on 
public participation in environmental decision-making
                                On March 14, 2025, Uzbekistan joined the 
Aarhus Convention, strengthening its obligations to provide environmental 
information and ensure public participation in environmental 
decision-making. The authorities have announced plans to implement 
monitoring mechanisms and public discussions of environmental projects.


                                Establishment of the ?Digital Ecology? 
Information System (Az?rbaycan dilind?)
                                President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed 
a decree on the creation of the ?Digital Ecology? information system, which 
will be managed by the ?Geodesy and Cartography Agency?. The goal of the 
system is to use digital technologies for monitoring and managing 
environmental data, enhancing transparency, efficiency, and communication 
between the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, other government 
agencies, and the public.

                                Ukraine Against Nuclear Energy: 80% of 
Population Consider it Unsafe
                                An Info Sapiens survey commissioned by 
Ecoaction revealed that 68% of Ukrainians consider building new power units 
at the Khmelnytskyi NPP unsafe due to war-related risks. Concerns about 
radioactive waste worry 80% of respondents, and 76% believe living near a 
nuclear plant is dangerous even in peacetime. Only 46% are confident that 
Ukraine can effectively manage nuclear waste storage and disposal.


                                Oil Spill in the Black Sea Reaches Resort 
Area
                                An oil spill in the Black Sea has 
contaminated coastal areas, including popular tourist zones. 
Environmentalists warn of serious risks to biodiversity and the economy of 
tourism-dependent regions. Local authorities are trying to minimize the 
damage, but water purification problems remain unresolved.


                                Ecologists Demand State of Emergency Due to 
Caspian Sea Drying Up
                                The Caspian Sea is rapidly shrinking, and 
Kazakh scientists are calling for an immediate declaration of a state of 
emergency. The crisis results from climate change, high temperatures, and 
human activity. Environmentalists warn that further shrinking of the sea 
could lead to catastrophic consequences for local ecosystems and coastal 
communities. Urgent measures are needed to prevent an ecological disaster.


                                Kara-Keche: Is the Price of Coal Too High?
                                The development of the largest coal mine in 
Kara-Keche, Kyrgyzstan, is causing serious environmental and social 
disputes. Local residents complain about air pollution and land destruction. 
Environmentalists warn that continuing coal extraction without proper 
control will lead to irreversible environmental damage.

                                Greening for Billions: Where Did the Money 
Go?
                                A Kazakhstani MP reported large-scale 
embezzlement of public funds allocated for tree planting projects across the 
country. According to him, the projects turned out to be fraudulent, with 
huge sums wasted. Environmentalists and activists demand a thorough 
investigation and revision of approaches to environmental initiatives to 
prevent similar incidents in the future.


                                Kyrgyzstan Prepares for Climate Change
                                The government of Kyrgyzstan is working on 
plans to adapt to climate change. The focus areas include improving water 
supply systems and preventing natural disasters. However, critics note slow 
progress and a lack of coordination between government agencies, which 
hinders the implementation of effective measures.

                                Kazakhstan Expands Hydrocarbon Production, 
Ignoring Environmental Risks
                                Kazakhstan announced plans to boost 
hydrocarbon production and increase investments in geological exploration to 
enhance export potential and ensure energy security. CAN EECCA opposes 
increased oil and gas extraction, as it poses a threat to environmental 
safety and exacerbates the climate crisis.


                                Air Quality in Kyrgyzstan: A Long-Term 
Challenge
                                The Minister of Ecology of Kyrgyzstan 
emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue to improve air quality. The 
discussion involved CAN EECCA members, including MoveGreen. Meerim 
Shamudinova presented on ?Air Quality Monitoring in the Kyrgyz Republic: 
>From Data to Solutions,? stressing the need for reliable data to develop 
effective environmental solutions.


                                Large-Scale Canal Cleanup in Moldova
                                In March 2025, Moldova launched a project to 
clean the canals of the Prut River delta to save Lake Beleu. The project 
aims to restore aquatic ecosystems and prevent further degradation. The work 
includes cleaning canal beds, modernizing drainage systems, and improving 
the region?s water balance. Environmentalists believe the project will 
positively affect biodiversity and water quality in the lake.


                                Georgia?s Climate Action Plan
                                The Georgian government approved a climate 
action plan for 2024-2025 with a budget of almost 3.7 billion lari ($1.37 
billion). The plan focuses on mitigating the impact of climate change on 
agriculture, water supply, and energy. Special attention is paid to 
infrastructure improvement and environmental monitoring.

                                Armenia Expands Ecosystem Restoration 
Program
                                In March 2025, Armenia?s Cabinet of 
Ministers increased the funding for a grant program aimed at restoring 
forests and wetlands. The updated measures focus on reducing greenhouse gas 
emissions, improving biodiversity, and enhancing environmental monitoring 
systems.

                                Almaty Struggles to Address Smog Problem 
Without Clear Plan
                                Almaty?s Mayor Yerbolat Dosaev promised to 
reduce air pollution, but a clear action plan has not yet been presented. 
The main sources of smog are vehicle emissions and coal-fired boilers. 
Authorities talk about the need to switch to cleaner fuels and modernize 
public transport, but the implementation of these measures remains 
uncertain. Meanwhile, residents continue to suffer from high levels of air 
pollution.

                                Central Asian E-Waste Forum Held in Dushanbe
                                On March 4-5, 2025, the Central Asian Forum 
?From Awareness to Action? took place in Dushanbe, focusing on e-waste 
management issues. Experts and NGO representatives discussed practical 
approaches to collecting, recycling, and disposing of electronic waste, 
including establishing centralized collection systems and developing 
environmental legislation. Participants emphasized the importance of 
international cooperation to address the e-waste problem across Central 
Asia.

                                Construction of a four-lane highway through 
the Amazon continues as part of preparations for COP30. The project destroys 
ecosystems and threatens local communities. Scientists warn that the road 
could cause irreversible damage to biodiversity.

                                Melting Glaciers: A Threat to 2 Billion 
Lives
                                According to a UN report, rapidly melting 
glaciers threaten the food and water security of 2 billion people worldwide. 
The crisis primarily affects mountain communities and countries dependent on 
glacial water for irrigation and drinking.


                                Wildfires in Japan: Thousands Evacuated
                                Massive wildfires continue to spread across 
Nagano Prefecture, Japan. High winds and dry weather complicate firefighting 
efforts. Authorities have evacuated thousands of people, deploying 
firefighting planes and ground units.

                                Water is the lifeblood of our planet, 
essential for ecosystems, economies, and communities. Yet, managing this 
precious resource sustainably is becoming increasingly complex due to 
climate change, population growth, and competing demands.
                                In recent years, there has been a growing 
recognition of the need to combine traditional in-situ monitoring networks 
with cutting-edge satellite-based Earth observation technologies. In-situ 
monitoring provides precise, localized data, while satellites offer 
unparalleled spatial coverage and the ability to monitor remote or 
inaccessible areas. Together, these tools create a powerful synergy, 
enhancing the accuracy and reliability of water resource assessments.


                                Collaborative efforts like the INBO & WMO 
Task Force on Satellite Monitoring and the One Water Vision Initiative, 
launched at the One Water Summit in Riyadh in December 2024, underscore the 
global commitment to leveraging these technologies for sustainable water 
management.

      This major publication highlights the crucial role of genetic resources in maintaining the resilience and productivity of forests and their capacity to adapt to climate change. It stresses their importance for food security, nutrition, livelihoods, climate and biodiversity.
       
       
       
      Drawing on data from 77 countries ? representing more than three-quarters of the global forest area ? the report assesses the progress made in improving the management of forest genetic resources. It finds that there is a need to reinforce the conservation, use and sustainable development of these resources in the face of rising threats against them.
       
       
       
      The report emphasizes the need for better access to information, warning that it remains scattered and incomplete at the national level. It reviews scientific advances and concludes with recommendations for continued action at the national, regional and global levels to ensure that forest genetic resources are sustainably managed for the benefit of current and future generations.

            I?m worried. Trump has a way to kill Ek?. And lots of reasons to do it.

            Ek? is a global organization, but like much of the internet, our servers, data, email list, and website are all housed in the US. And mostly with companies that have now aligned themselves with Trump. They could shut us down in a heartbeat.

            Would they? Well, we campaigned against Trump throughout his last term and we?ve already started again. And we constantly fight these billionaire tech companies, like our historic data privacy lawsuit against Facebook in Brazil. If we?ve learned anything about Trump and these tech bro-ligarchs, it?s that they have thin skin ? and are quick to lash out if their feelings are hurt.

            So we have to move countries. And fast.

            This isn?t easy. Shifting all our tech will be costly and require more staff to accomplish. But if a few thousand of us can contribute now, we can make Ek? Trump-proof. Will you help?

            With the way the tech industry is going (donating millions to Trump, allowing toxic disinformation to run wild), this isn?t just the safe thing to do, it?s the right thing to do. Anyone who can should stop giving money to these oligarchs. It would also give us extra insurance for campaigning against both Trump and these tech giants, who could otherwise shut down our org with the flip of a switch.

            But these tech giants are worth billions for a reason ? they dominate the industry. The alternatives are lesser known, and expensive. We might even have to create new legal entities abroad to be able to use them. And we?d also have to self-host some of our tech to make up for some missing features and ensure our org and our members are 100% safe. 

            Beyond that, we?re already seeing a push for Republicans to shut down non-profits that disagree with them. HR 9495, the ?non-profit killer?, could let the government use political motivation to strip us of non-profit status. 

            That?s why we have to Trump-proof our movement, right now. Make our tech independent and beef up our legal defence. But it will be costly ? and we need to cover our campaigning, too. Can you chip in to help us defend our corporate campaigning mission in the new Trump era?

                                Violence or Vandalism?

                                A couple weeks ago, I went to a talk at UCLA by the author Kim Stanley Robinson, whose most recent novel, The Ministry for the Future, is an optimistic look at the ways humanity might tackle the climate crisis. Speaking to a small room of environmentally conscientious listeners, Robinson admitted that the book, written six years ago, was missing something: a discussion on the difference between violence against people and sabotage against property. ?If you break a pipeline or you slash the tires of an SUV, that isn?t even violence,? he said. ?That?s just breaking stuff.?


                                I?ve been thinking about this a lot lately while watching Teslas go up in flames on the news, a clear protest against Elon Musk, whose Nazi salutes and reckless firings of federal employees have raised a lot of ire. Musk, who is not an elected official but leads the new the Department of Government Efficiency, seems a bit bumfuzzled by this response, as he watches Tesla stocks and sales plummet. (On the other hand, as Paul Koberstein reports this week in the Journal, his SpaceX and other enterprises are poised for a great windfall, in what appear to be clear, brazen conflicts of interest.)


                                The Trump administration, in its Orwellian way, would like to characterize these fiery Tesla protests, which haven?t resulted in any injuries, as acts as terrorism. The FBI defines domestic terrorism as ?violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals.? (This is why so many allegations of eco-terrorism are equally absurd, but I digress). What?s happening to Teslas looks more to me like vandalism than violence.


                                At the same time, the administration is overlooking the great amount of terror Musk?s own actions have caused: The abrupt dismantling of USAID, denying life-saving drugs, including HIV medication, to many in need around the world; deregulation at the Environmental Protection Agency, which ought to be working toward clean air and water, not the profits of the fossil fuel industry; and the defunding of the National Institutes for Public Health, the last of which, Robinson reminded his listeners, does calculable harm. Public health and science, after all, are responsible for increased life expectancy around the world, which means the Trump administration is stealing life from us ? billions of us.


                                It seems clear to me who the real terrorists and tyrants are. And there?s certainly no harm in continuing to call them out.

The Global Workshop on freshwater ecosystem conservation and restoration in transboundary basins will be organized on 16 and 17 June 2025 in Geneva in the framework of the Water Convention, serviced by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). 



The Global Workshop will be followed by the 9th meeting of the Task Force on Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystems Nexus on 18 June 2025, which you are also invited to attend. The agenda and more information on that meeting will be shared shortly. 



The Global Workshop is organized under the leadership of France, Slovenia and Zambia and in partnership with the European Union, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). 



We invite focal points to facilitate nomination of relevant representatives from their countries and basins responsible for issues related to ? but not limited to ? water, climate and biodiversity to participate in the afore-mentioned events. UNECE is committed to gender equality. To this end, we encourage Member States to ensure gender balanced participation in the meeting. 



The working languages of the Global Workshop and Task Force meeting will be Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Financial support: Eligible participants from countries with economies in transition and developing countries may apply for financial support to facilitate their participation in the workshop using the financial support request form attached. Requests for financial support should be submitted to the Water Convention secretariat (water.convention at un.org) as soon as possible, but not later than 25 April 2025. No application will be accepted after this deadline. Only limited funding is available. A maximum of one participant per eligible country may be funded. Priority will be given to Parties countries in accession and presenters. Participants will be notified by 3 May 2025 whether their application has been accepted or not. Countries and organizations are encouraged to look for additional sources of funding through their institutions? budget, national and basins projects and partners, as the secretariat may not be able to respond positively to all requests.? 



Visa: Participants requiring entry visas should inform the Water Convention Secretariat as soon as possible. Since Switzerland is part of the Schengen Zone, obtaining a visa might take up to 7 weeks. Participants needing a visa are therefore requested to submit their application as soon as possible and initiate visa procedures not later than 9 May 2025.

El Taller Mundial se organiza bajo el liderazgo de Francia, Eslovenia y Zambia y en colaboraci?n con la Uni?n Europea, el Fondo para el Medio Ambiente Mundial (FMAM), la Red Internacional de Organismos de Cuenca (RIOC), la Uni?n Internacional para la Conservaci?n de la Naturaleza (UICN), la Convenci?n de Ramsar sobre los Humedales, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA) y el Fondo Mundial para la Naturaleza (WWF, en sus siglas en ingl?s). 



Invitamos a los puntos focales  a facilitar la designaci?n de representantes relevantes de sus pa?ses y de las cuencas que sean responsables de temas relativos, entre otros, al agua, al clima y a la biodiversidad para que participen en los eventos mencionados anteriormente.                         Little corellas, or short-billed corellas, are playful birds. The members of this white cockatoo subspecies are extremely social and loves to spend time with members of their flocks, even to the point of mischievousness, getting into all kinds of silly shenanigans together.

                        Or, they did. Until hundreds of them started showing up dead in New South Wales, Australia. The likely culprit? Poisoning by illicit pesticide use.

                        So far, no one knows which pesticides were used or where exactly. What we do know is that, according to the Environmental Protection Authority of New South Wales, pesticide misuse is illegal. Punishments for misuse include fees of up to $2 million for corporations or $500,000 for individuals.

                        Australia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the entire world. Approximately 46% of the birds and 69% of the mammals in Australia only live there ? nowhere else. Upwards of 1.75 million animal, plant, and microorganism species can be found there. So it's imperative that authorities act quickly to protect other populations from possible pesticide poisoning!

                        Luckily, government officials are investigating these mass deaths. But we have to make sure they keep going until they find out who is responsible and hold them accountable.                         The last thing we need is more tech billionaires. 

                        But OpenAI's board and multiple legal officials can block Altman's plan. Join the call to demand they step in -- let's show Big Tech that the time for doing whatever it wants is over.

If people everywhere ? from technologists to lawmakers to business leaders and everyone in between ? join together and demand a halt to this plan, we can stop it... and show Big Tech that the time for doing whatever it wants is over.

To make matters worse, Europe's wolves have become less protected from these dangers.
