News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | MAY 30, 2025 We Can Do Better It is hard these days to feel like the work I?m doing matters. Instead of sitting behind a desk, shouldn?t I be out there, putting my body on the line as young students get locked up for simply speaking up, as children get torn from parents who are disappeared to prisons overseas, as even sitting judges get arrested on trumped-up charges? I grapple with this question all the time as the Trump administration wages an increasingly cruel war against the people of this nation. But then I get to editing stories like our Summer print issue cover feature by Hannah Palmer, about how her search for swimmable waters in the US South led to her discovery of the region?s environmental history, its water policy, and the racial politics of public spaces. And Eric Freedman?s profile of researchers who dedicate their lives to seeking out and helping save previously unknown species. And Viola Kerekes? account of her work with a herd of the last wild horse species left on Earth, which includes this incredible factoid ? she knows the nearly 300 horses in the herd by name. Stories like these remind me that there are people out there still working away in their own spaces to better this world. They remind me of what legendary writer-activist James Baldwin said in reference to the power of individuals to create positive change and inspire others: ?The world is held together, really it is held together, by the love and the passion of very few people.? And they remind me, also, of the value of bringing these narratives to you. Storytelling, after all, is such an integral part of being human. Stories allow us to share information in ways that help us make sense of the world around us and of our place in it. None of the features in our new issue (which we will start rolling out online next week) deal directly with the massive negative impact the new political regime is having on just about every aspect of our lives, climate and environment included. But in some ways, that omission in itself is an act of resistance. Why give oxygen to narratives of fear that are already circulating out there, that breed division and isolation at a time when we should be building community and fostering hope for the future? While the Journal doesn?t hesitate to ring the alarm bell when needed, perhaps our role during these dark days is to ensure we tell more stories that show us that good persists, love persists ? and that simply doing what you love can also be a form of resistance. * After two-and-a-half years as the Journal?s associate editor, Brian Calvert has moved on to a staff reporter and contributing editor position at Civil Eats, a publication we admire and have had several collaborations with. He is missed, but we wish him the very best at his new venture. In this issue you will find: ?An on-the-ground report from Hungary about the world?s only remaining wild horse species and efforts to reintroduce it in the steppes of Central Asia and Europe. ? A thought-provoking personal essay about how systemic racism has limited access to water ? including pools, lakes, and rivers ? in southern Black communities, and the quest to find shared spaces to swim. ? An intriguing feature about what drives scientists to seek previously unknown species, and how their discoveries are furthering both our understanding of biodiversity and how to conserve it. ? An investigative report from Zimbabwe, where the climate crisis is spurring migration into neighboring South Africa while also making the border-crossing less treacherous. ? A dispatch from the Philippines, where coastal development and industrial fishing threaten the lifestyle and livelihoods of the country?s dwindling artisanal fishing communities. Plus: ?A conversation with sociologist and a self-described ?apocalyptic optimist? Dana Fisher about climate protest, systemic racism, and the American resistance. ? A personal essay by Camilla Fox of Earth Island?s Project Coyote about how her deep connection with the wild informs the work she does to promote coexistence with our nonhuman neighbors. In South Sudan, where the sun shines so hot that temperatures regularly reach 40?C, nearly 11 million people live in complete darkness after dusk. That is except for the kerosene lamps being used that emit toxic fumes equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes a day. The crisis is so acute there that respiratory illnesses, like pneumonia, are the biggest killer of children under five. But there's a simple solution: solar lights. We're working with an amazing community-led partner who is racing to bring light to six villages and give thousands a chance before they're driven further into darkness -- and you can help. A solar light costs $20 and lasts for 5-10 years. If all of us chip in, we could make it happen quickly, with no red tape. They won?t start installing until they raise enough funds to light every home in a village, so no one is left out. Can you help bring light to a village in South Sudan -- and help us carry on the work of empowering communities everywhere? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Without electricity, once the sun sets children can?t study, farmers can?t finish chores, and the entire community is forced to shut down. South Sudan is a young country under enormous strain from economic crisis, warring political factions, and a rapidly growing population of refugees fleeing the ongoing civil war in Sudan. Despite all efforts to build the necessary infrastructure, only about 7% of its population can access electricity -- and the cost is among the highest in the world. The available alternative exposes everyone to a dangerous amount of black carbon fumes. A single kerosene lamp emits up to one tonne of carbon over five years! Not to mention it's incredibly expensive. Households can save as much as 30% of their income by switching to solar light; and because there are no carbon emissions, people live healthier lives for longer. Already, Solar Links with local community based organisations, have brought light to more than 15,000 homes, schools and health clinics in Uganda, South Sudan and Burundi -- transforming entire communities one by one. Our donations before helped power two villages in Uganda, bringing light to over 1000 families! Now if enough of us donate, even a little, we could do it again in South Sudan -- and find more stories like this. It's rare when a single donation can make such a huge difference almost instantaneously. Can you help forever transform a village? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount A beautiful thing about this project is that the impact reaches far beyond an individual home. Members of Congress Want to Prevent States from Regulating AI for 10 Years, Threatening Everyday Americans to Benefit Corporations Sign Now We've all been hearing about the AI revolution that is swiftly overtaking our daily realities. AI is everywhere now: it's at our jobs, in schools, even plagiarizing famous animated artists' styles. It's obvious to most people that we need some kind of guardrails for this rapidly-developing technology. Except, of course, to Congressional Republicans. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives recently proposed an addition to its budget bill that would ban state regulation of AI for a whole 10 years. Then, they voted to pass the bill, which could become law if the Senate doesn't stop it. At the pace AI is currently developing, who knows what it will look like in 10 years? Ten years into the future, it could have already reshaped our whole world. This poses huge risks for the American people. Already, AI is being shown to exhibit racialized bias and discrimination, including when used for job hiring. Corporations have been using it to artificially raise prices and rental costs for housing. It's already leading to job displacement as employers seek to cut costs. On top of that, AI deepfakes are becoming more and more realistic, making it harder to identify what's actually real. This sneaky anti-regulatory provision isn't about helping everyday people. It's about lobbying and money in politics ? and protecting already mega-rich technology corporations and their Trumpian CEOs. We must demand that the Senate push back against the House's recklessness before it is too late. We must protect ourselves from the consequences of unrestricted AI! Sign the petition! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. What would the world even look like in 10 years of unrestricted AI expansion? The Senate must stop this anti-regulation bill immediately. The U.K. Wants To Dim The Sun Using Experiments That Could Forever Change Global Weather Patterns Sign Now In an alarming move, the U.K. government has announced funding for real-world solar radiation modification (SRM) experiments aimed at artificially cooling the planet. SRM experiments, such as cloud brightening and stratospheric aerosol injection, aim to reflect sunlight and cool the Earth. While this initiative may seem like a quick fix to the climate crisis, experts warn the potential long-term consequences are understudied and could devastate the planet. Sign the petition to ask the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to begin regulating geo-engineering to protect the environment and prevent dangerous climate manipulation! While the intention is to improve the climate, these methods have not been proven safe. These changes could trigger severe effects like droughts, changes in rainfall, and even affect the entire global ecosystem, including vital areas like the Amazon rainforest. The most troubling aspect is the lack of international regulation governing such experiments. Private companies and governments are operating with little oversight, risking unpredictable and possibly catastrophic environmental changes. We urgently call on the IPCC to regulate these potentially dangerous experiments and work towards a global framework that regulates geo-engineering. Thank you, Jess Care2 Petitions Team P.S. We?re on global red alert: from the Amazon to the Congo Basin, megafires are turning the world?s forests to ash at record speed. An area the size of Panama has already been scorched at a staggering rate of 18 football fields per minute. Scientists are warning that if we don?t buck the trend fast, our most precious natural carbon sinks could be permanently destroyed, triggering climate chaos and misery for millions. Yet the worst offenders behind this destruction ? a rotten, predatory financial industry that's poured an astounding $6 trillion into dirty fossil fuel companies driving deforestation in the last few years alone ? are flying completely under the radar. Their profits are even soaring! Together, we could change that. The world?s most important climate summit is just months away so we have a golden opportunity to turn up the heat on bank execs and politicians while all eyes are on them! But it hasn?t come out of the blue ? years of punishing drought and scorching heatwaves driven by global heating have pushed our iconic forests into crisis. Barclays, JPMorgan Chase, Citi and Bank of America are carrying on with business as usual: pumping billions every year into dirty energy projects, even though these banks pledged to drastically reduce their emissions. The companies that they generously provide with loans, investments and insurance cause 80 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions. If banks simply stopped financing fossil fuels, it would be a real reset for the global economy ? and for the fight against climate change. But right now, the financial incentives are all wrong. We need to force banks and insurers to rethink and recalculate how they do business. Together, we could make this happen if we have enough funds to tackle the enormous work ahead of us like: a.. Filing complaints with financial regulators around the world to rein in toxic big banks; a.. Making these CEOs famous for their role in climate chaos, hounding them at public appearances and splashing their faces on billboards and in the media; a.. Shockingly, he didn't receive the response he should have ? which ought to have been an immediate, automatic "No." Instead, he claims he's heard "positive feedback" from his contacts at the agency. The obvious comparison is to the dystopian book and movie series, The Hunger Games. But Worsoff claimed his proposal was different. Yet a show like this would actually put very real immigrants in very serious danger. First, it would make their names publicly available. Additionally, reality shows are always edited to create "villains" and "heroes" out of different cast members. Both of these are extremely risky at a time when immigration is becoming so demonized in the U.S. That doesn't even include the emotional cruelty of putting an immigrant through a whole series of competitions, only to tell them that they've lost the game. Because there would only be one "winner" who is sworn in as a citizen at the end of the "game." Citizenship, immigrants, and the process of naturalization all deserve our full respect and to be taken seriously. It's unbelievable that the DHS hasn't rejected this plan yet. Guy, age six, and Bruno, nearly four, jumped into the pool with shouts of glee, as if they could swim, only to sink, still grinning, to the bottom. On our first visit to Forest Vale pool, their overconfidence frightened me. Once I determined that they could tiptoe in the three-foot shallow end of this pool, where all the little kids were swirling around, I relaxed a little. There were a couple of dads ribcage deep, holding their red cups of beer over the splashing, ducking heads of their daughters. They would block any beach balls or toddlers from drifting into the deep water. I pulled myself out of the cold water, settled on a strappy lounge chair, and watched the driveway. Minivans and SUVs crunched down the long, potholed driveway every half-hour or so, delivering more of my children?s classmates and their parents. So far, everyone here was White. I assumed some of the Black or Latino families from school would show up soon. Allison had been inviting us for weeks. ?You guys should come to the pool,? she said, as we squeezed past one another in the hallway each afternoon. What pool? Did Hapeville, the small town where our kids went to preschool, have a public swimming pool tucked away somewhere? Sign the petition: save Wikie and Keijo and send them to a safe sanctuary! Sign the petition Orcas Wikie and Keijo have been filmed swimming in decrepit pools filled with algae. France's biggest marine park shut down in January but they still haven't found a safe sanctuary for these orcas. Public pressure is mounting on Marineland. Will you join more than 47,000 other Ek? members and sign the petition telling the marine park to not abandon Wikie and Keijo and find them a safe sanctuary? What?s really frustrating is that France?s marine park is going against the law designed to end the mistreatment of animals. Wikie and Keijo have already suffered enough, especially after the loss of two family members in recent years. Keeping them together and sending them to a sanctuary is the only solution that puts their welfare first. Marineland originally wanted to send Wikie and Keijo to a zoo in Spain with a terrible track record of looking after animals?several orcas have died there. After thousands of people opposed this plan it was shelved. But now Marineland must be held responsible for finding an alternative safe sanctuary for Wikie and Keijo. This is where the Ek? community can support Wikie and Keijo in living a life of freedom and safety. As a global community we can create worldwide attention on the fate of these orcas and pressure officials to make the right decision. Add your name to the petition: save orcas from a lifetime of captivity. Time is running out and Marineland needs to hear from us. Your signature could help change the course of the lives of these beautiful orcas. This is a critical moment for Wikie and Keijo. Every voice counts right now. If we don?t act, they could spend the rest of their lives in terrible conditions. We have the power to demand something better for them. Take a minute to sign the petition and share it with your friends and family. Let?s show Marineland that we won?t stand by while these orcas suffer. Dear friends of the rainforests, In early 2023, the Spanish Congress and Senate passed the Animal Welfare Act, a landmark law recognizing animals as sentient beings. The Act explicitly requires the government to present a draft law to protect great apes?bonobos, orangutans, chimpanzees, and gorillas?within three months of its enactment. Those protections for great apes are now two years overdue. The Jane Goodall Institute estimates that about 140 great apes live in captivity in Spain, often under cruel conditions. The war in Ukraine continues and is far from over. Despite its stated position of readiness for ?peace talks,? Russia recently launched one of the most powerful strikes on Ukrainian cities in the entire full-scale invasion. Civilians have been killed. Offensive operations to create a ?buffer zone? continue, in reality meaning the occupation of new territories. Today, military tensions are on the rise all over the world, as are increasingly powerful authoritarian governments. Nature is increasingly becoming a hostage to private interests. Protecting peace and the planet are challenging, and at this time the question of what else can be done to prevent more catastrophic consequences than those we are already facing today is especially acute. The Work Group continues to analyze the war?s environmental consequences, but today it is obvious that action is needed. Greater solidarity, the search for solutions and their implementation are needed. Otherwise, humanity may not see another tomorrow. The sabotage of the Kakhovka Hydropower Plant dam remains one of the most significant environmental consequences of Russia?s invasion. Two years have passed since this tragedy, and Ukraine and the world has become only more outspoken about ecocide. The former Kakhovka Reservoir remains on the front line. Nature, however, is pursuing self-restoration there, not only regrowing floodplain forests in Velyky Luhi (?Great Meadow?), but also the Dnipro River ecosystem as a whole. Native species such as sturgeon, for example, are returning to spawn in parts of the river freed from the reservoir and dam. UWEC Work Group?s position statement highlights the importance of strategic decision-making to protect nature?s recovery in the vicinity of the former Kakhovka Reservoir: a.. Two years after the Kakhovka Hydropower Plant?s destruction: environmental consequences and the need for strategic decisions The war in Ukraine affects nature not only in places where military action is happening. It also threatens places far from the front line. Community monitoring has been limited since 2014, when Ukraine first faced Russian aggression. Oligarchs and toxic businesses have taken advantage of the situation in the country, filling their coffers and satisfying their private interests at nature?s expense. The situation only worsened in 2022, after the start of the full-scale invasion. Despite these challenges, environmental activists and organizations continue to fight both external and internal aggressors to preserve Ukraine's unique natural ecosystems. In this issue, Oleksii Vasyliuk examines the challenges of community monitoring in wartime Ukraine: a.. Beyond scrutiny: How the war is hampering civil environmental monitoring in Ukraine In conditions where in situ monitoring is not possible, satellite data analysis can help. OSINT analysis is actively developing in Ukraine, making it possible, for example, to examine the situation with agricultural lands. Many have been significantly damaged during combat action and shelling. The situation not only jeopardizes Ukraine?s food security as it does other nations as well, but is also creating additional pollution. Of course, many agricultural areas were already contaminated with pesticides and other harmful substances before and during the war, the extent of that pollution only increased. Read about how satellite monitoring helps analyze and make decisions in both agriculture and ecology in the article by Leonid Shumilo, Sofia Drozd and Natalia Kusul investigate how satellite monitoring can analyze impacts and inform decision-making for both agricultural and environmental strategies. a.. Satellite data aids the study of the war?s environmental and economic consequences for Ukraine?s agriculture sector It may seem premature to discuss restoring Ukraine?s nature until after the war ends. But without an initial plan, there is a high probability that the ?restoration? process will be even more destructive to the environment than the war. It is also important to prevent areas directly impacted by the conflict from spreading invasive species, a priority that is especially true in agricultural areas. Read Stanislav Viter?s exploration of how best to approach biodiversity restoration on lands used for agriculture. a.. The future of Ukraine?s abandoned agricultural land: rewilding or a return to farming? Sanctions remain an effective economic tool to combat Russian aggression. One key issue is ending purchases of Russian fossil fuels. The RePower EU plan was developed and launched in 2022 in order to implement this policy in Europe. The European Commission met in May 2025 to decide on how to achieve its environmental and climate goals over the next two years. However, experts note that in order to achieve the goals declared in RePower EU, it is important to move beyond the optics of refusing ?bad? liquefied gas, uranium and coal in favor of ?good? ones. There are no ?good? fossil fuels, and supporting their consumption only plays into the hands of authoritarian governments. Today, energy efficiency programs need to be implemented and the energy independence of EU countries promoted. Eugene Simonov writes about the EU?s energy ?divorce? and the latest news regarding sanctions against Russian fossil fuels: a.. Europe hastens its ?energy divorce? from Russia Environmental and climate organizations are not just speaking out about the consequences of the Russian military invasion for Ukraine and the world. They are also organizing direct actions. For example, this spring, representatives of Greenpeace-Ukraine took part in an action in the Baltic Sea, writing ?RISK? in large letters on one ship belonging to Russia?s shadow fleet. WWF is involved in the restoration of forest belts destroyed by the war in southern Ukraine. NGO Ecology People Law continues to fight for the recognition of ?ecocide? at the international level. Read more about research and actions by activists and NGOs in our review: a.. Environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine. Melting glaciers and acute drinking water shortages are causing serious harm to the economies and ecosystems of Central Asian countries and pose a threat to human life. President Rahmon called on the global community to strengthen cooperation to preserve the cryosphere and develop glaciology at all levels. Azerbaijan to Host World Environment Day in 2026 The 2026 event will serve as a platform to strengthen international cooperation and promote green solutions in climate, biodiversity, and sustainable urban development. -------------------------------------------------- World Climate and Energy News "Ticking Time Bomb": Ocean Acidity Reaches Critical Levels, Threatening Entire Ecosystems Ocean acidity has already crossed the threshold where it poses a threat to planetary health. Often referred to as the "evil twin" of the climate crisis, this phenomenon occurs when the ocean rapidly absorbs carbon dioxide, causing the water?s pH levels to drop. As a result, coral reefs and other marine ecosystems are being damaged?and in extreme cases, the acidity can literally dissolve the shells of marine organisms. Cities Around the World Are Sinking at an Alarming Rate A team from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) studied land subsidence in 48 coastal cities. According to BBC and UN estimates, nearly 76 million people live in cities where the ground subsided by an average of at least 1 cm per year between 2014 and 2020. The impact can be severe?for example, in Tianjin, China, 3,000 residents were evacuated from high-rise buildings in 2023 after cracks appeared in the surrounding streets. Engineering the Coral Reefs of the Future Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution have developed an AI-powered robot equipped with multiple cameras, hydrophones (underwater microphones), and other scientific tools to monitor and restore coral reefs. The robot is designed to assess reef heat stress, identify biodiversity hotspots, and locate rare species?such as pillar corals, which have nearly vanished from the Caribbean due to disease. -------------------------------------------------- Opportunities Japan Water Forum Fund 2025 ? That is the grim reality for Kabul. Message-ID: Can you help? This Capital City of 7 Million People Could Soon Run Out of Water. The World Must Turn Its Attention to Kabul. Sign Now Water is the most basic human right. But right now, 7 million people in Kabul, Afghanistan, are facing an unimaginable crisis: they're rapidly running out of drinking water. Experts fear Kabul could be the first modern city to have its water sources completely run dry by 2030. On top of this scarcity is the issue of contamination. 80% of Kabul's water is not safe to drink ? specifically because of sewage and arsenic! As a result, families across Kabul have been suffering immensely. People in the city have literally gone into debt trying to buy water for themselves and their families. To make matters worse, for-profit companies are digging their own wells to suck up exorbitant amounts of water ? just to sell it to struggling people at inflated prices. Without urgent action, the city's population will face devastating health impacts, poverty, and forced migration, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation. We cannot let politics overshadow human lives. The international community must step up immediately and provide aid to help build the water infrastructure Kabul desperately needs to keep its residents safe and healthy. The U.S. must act like the global leader it is. Protect Endangered Koalas in Australia. The Government Must Incorporate Their Habitat into a New National Park! Sign Now The government of New South Wales is creating a new 'great koala national park,' and this is wonderful news! The troubling thing though, is that so far, it has excluded an important area that is home to a "high density" of many different endangered species. The area, known as the "Bollanolla Range" within the current Newry State Forest, is an old-growth coastal forest. It provides a critical habitat for vulnerable species like koalas, sooty owls, southern great gilders, squirrel gliders, yellow-bellied gliders, and up to 35 additional species. In fact, experts say it's a crucial area for Australia's unique and rich biodiversity. Including this area in the new national park is important because it would help strengthen protections to keep these animals ? and their forest home ? alive and well. Those protections would include safeguards against logging, human construction, and habitat destruction. At a time when climate change is already wreaking havoc on our environment and animal friends, we must do all we can to help defend them. And that includes making sure their homes are protected and designated as national parks! Help us speak out for endangered koalas, owls, gliders, and more. The government of New South Wales must protect the Bollanolla Range by adding it to the upcoming great koala national park! Sign the petition! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. > News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JUNE 13, 2025 United, We Rise This past week, my attention has been glued to what?s unfolding in Los Angeles, where Trump has called in the National Guard and the Marines to suppress overwhelmingly peaceful protests against federal raids on immigrant communities. I know I?m not alone in this. These feel like unprecedented times. Like so many of us, I feel gutted about what the raids mean for immigrant families, and what this federal aggression means for our democracy. I also find myself pondering what the federal response means for other rights-based movements, including for the environmental movement. The strands that connect the push for immigrant rights and environmental rights are many. The environmental justice movement, for example, has early roots in the fight for farmworkers rights, which united the causes of worker and immigrant justice and drew early attention the health impacts of pesticide exposure. Immigrant communities in the United States have long been the first in line to be exposed to toxic air and water, and today find themselves on the frontlines of the climate crisis as well. They are also on the frontlines of disaster recovery efforts, including in Los Angeles, where they comprise a large share of the workforce cleaning up after the recent wildfires. The federal escalation of force in Los Angeles is meant to stymie resistance, whether over immigration policies, environmental rollbacks, or any other number of issues. But so far it hasn?t managed to silence us. Rather, it is having the opposite effect, bringing us together in our conviction to defend the rights of people and the places we care about, spurring us to action. Case in point ? there are at least 1,800 ?No Kings? protests planned across the country this weekend. In other words, as social movement expert Dana Fisher said in a recent conversation with the Journal, we might find that a ?broader sense of collective risk ? builds power and builds capacity.? China's People Say No to the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Let's End This Cruelty Once and for All! Sign Now In the southern region of Guangxi, China, the Yulin Dog Meat Festival has become an infamous annual event. This "festival," is actually just a dog meat trade where thousands of dogs are killed for their meat. Contrary to what the festival organizers might claim, most of the population in China doesn't even consume dog meat. On top of that, some of the dogs slaughtered at Yulin are literally abducted from Chinese households by vendors who want extra meat. We stand in solidarity with the Chinese people and animal protection groups that are demanding the Chinese government take action. These animals are often transported over long distances, crammed into cages with little food or water, and arrive sick and traumatized. Upon arrival, they face brutal killings, including being beaten, strangled, or stabbed in full view of other dogs, further adding to their trauma. Sometimes, the dogs are even skinned and boiled alive. Images and stories from the festival are a thing of nightmares. By increasing law enforcement, creating a public education campaign, and challenging dog meat trading legally, the state can crack down on this horrific annual event. Sign now if you agree! Federal Agents Handcuffed a U.S. Senator and a Staff Member for a U.S. Representative Sign Now In the past two weeks, the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the FBI, and other federal agencies have significantly escalated their attacks on civilians ? not only on everyday people, but also on members of the U.S. Congress and their staff members. Over the past several weeks, official members of the U.S. federal government have done the following: handcuffed a Senator for asking questions at a press conference, indicted a Representative over a protest, and detained a Representative's staffer for correctly rebuffing ICE attempts to search a Congressional office without a warrant. Congress is a co-equal branch of government. The Constitution guarantees its authority to question, check, and balance the other branches. It deserves respect ? and protection. The executive branch has no right to attack members of the legislature and their staff. Yet on May 28, ICE agents demanded entrance to private areas of a Congressional office, stating an intention to search it. A video shows one agent declaring: "You're harboring rioters in the office." When aides demanded a search warrant first, officers said ICE doesn't need warrants (which is not true). Ultimately, agents arrested and detained an aid who resisted. Then, just 2 weeks later, federal agents were at it again. The senior U.S. Senator from California, Alex Padilla, attempted to ask Secretary Kristi Noem a question during a Homeland Security press conference in Los Angeles. A video shows him saying: "I'm Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary." But he never got an answer to his questions. Instead, agents with the Secret Service and FBI physically grabbed him and began to restrain him and push him from the room. The Senator remained non-violent, yet multiple agents dragged him from the room, forced him onto the floor, pulled his arms behind his back, and handcuffed him. All for asking a question. And just days earlier, the U.S. government indicted yet another member of Congress ? Rep. LaMonica McIver, a Democrat from New Jersey ? regarding a protest outside an immigration detention facility in her home state. We cannot stay silent in the face of these escalations. Donald Trump just launched a devastating new attack on endangered species that could set off a global extinction crisis. And together WE are going to stop him. Right now, one of the world?s strongest wildlife laws protects hundreds of species ? from grizzly bears and sea otters to sperm whales and polar bears. But Trump is moving quickly to rewrite the rules so that destroying an endangered animal?s habitat no longer counts as harming it. It would be one of the biggest rollbacks of wildlife protections in HISTORY ? which is why Ek? is launching a massive global campaign to stop this attack. Together, tens of thousands of us already overwhelmed a public comment period and now our rapid response team is getting ready to massively scale up. If all of us chip in we could work every connection we have in DC, unleash winning legal strategies to stop this plan from ever becoming reality, and power grassroots organising wherever it?s needed. We?re ready to launch, but campaigns like this take resources. Can you urgently chip in to power the resistance to stop Trump? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Since the Endangered Species Act passed U.S. Congress in 1973, it?s been one of the most successful laws ever to exist, saving 99% of species it protects from extinction. It stopped majestic species like the bald eagle and humpback whale from being completely wiped out. But all Trump sees is profits ? and so he?s hell bent on opening up protected lands to the highest bidder, paving the way for corporate destruction. Oil and gas giants would then be free to bulldoze forests, drain wetlands, and flatten ecosystems ? and face zero consequences, even if species go extinct. A public comment period just ended and now Trump and his team are racing to finalize their proposal to quickly open more lands up for exploitation by Trump?s corporate friends. But here?s the thing: killing off precious species like polar bears is NOT a popular move. Momentum is building as the public begins to understand what Trump is doing ? and now OUR movement can come together and power the legal action necessary to stop Trump in his tracks. This isn?t just about protecting vulnerable species ? it?s about corporate greed, climate destruction, and a dangerous precedent that could put ecosystems around the world at risk. But the fight isn't over yet because we are just getting started. Can you urgently chip in to stop Trump?s attacks on our planet? Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. > News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JUNE 20, 2025 Room to Roam WHEN APPROACHING A herd of Przewalski?s horses grazing in the open grasslands of Hungary?s Hortob?gy National Park, I try to walk like an old person. Not quite weak and frail appearing, but just slow enough to reassure them that I?m not a threat. If they stare at me, ears pointed forward, I know it means: Please don?t come closer. We don?t know who you are and what you want. I wait quietly until their wariness subsides. This herd has never lived with predators, so the horses are more curious than fearful of an unexpected presence in their midst. Eventually, they resume grazing and allow me to move right up to them. Starting at the edge of the group, I work on identifying each of them. The herd comprises some 270 individuals, bunched together in 30 ?harems? ? groups within the herd containing one stallion, 5 to 8 mares, and offspring ? and about 15 bachelor groups comprising 5 to 7 young and old stallions each. To a lay person, these dun-colored animals, who resemble donkeys more than horses, might all look very similar ? stocky, pot-bellied, with thick necks, and short, bristly manes. But I know almost all of them by sight. I have, after all, been monitoring them for 20 years as part of a carefully managed, international effort to bring back this species, which went extinct in the wild in the 1960s. Still, it takes even me a while to tell all of them apart. When I started this work 20 years ago, the reserve had only about 40 horses, and I?d be done in a few hours. Now, it takes me two-to-three days of continuous work to account for all of them. I?m keenly aware that this species would be extinct today but for the decades of efforts by fellow conservationists. Thanks to their dedication, there are now about 2,500 to 3,000 Przewalski?s horses living in nature reserves and zoological gardens in 40 countries across Europe and Asia. With their numbers slowly rebounding, those of us working to save these horses are grappling with a larger question: How can we help them roam free in a world where the human footprint is writ large? Viola Kerekes, project coordinator for Przewalski?s horses in Hungary?s Hortob?gy?s Pentezug Reserve, writes about her work with the animals and an international effort to return the world?s only remaining true wild horse species to the steppes of Central Asia. Message-ID: UN Climate Change ? Global Climate Action 19 June 2025 ? Climate High-Level Champions' Newsletter View as webpage? Ahead of COP 30, the Climate High-Level Champions head to Bonn to Strengthen Delivery, Align Ambition and Help Close the Finance Gap Climate High-Level Champion for COP 30, Dan Ioschpe and Nigar Arpadarai, Climate High-Level Champion for COP 29. The Climate High-Level Champions join delegates from around the world in Bonn, Germany this week for the June Climate Meetings ? formally known as the 62nd Subsidiary Body Sessions ? to lay the groundwork for ambitious outcomes at COP 30 in Bel?m, Brazil this November. With countries preparing their critical next round of national climate, adaptation and nature plans (including Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs), the Champions are focused on strengthening the link between policy and practice to ensure these plans are grounded in real-world progress, responsive to lived realities, and capable of unlocking the capital required to deliver them. The talks come at a pivotal time. Discussions are underway on how to rapidly scale finance from all sources to where it is needed most. Six months on from the global climate finance goal agreed at COP 29 in Azerbaijan, the gap between promises and delivery remains wide. Climate impacts are escalating while many of the communities most exposed communities continue to lack the finance or support to respond. Guided by the Global Stocktake of progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement, the international community must now move from diagnosis to delivery, as outlined by the COP President-designate in his fourth letter on his vision for the Global Climate Action Agenda for COP 30. The Champions ? Nigar Arpadarai, Climate High-Level Champion for COP 29 and Dan Ioschpe, Climate High-Level Champion for COP 30 ? are working with the Marrakech Partnership and partners across the broader global climate action community to support this shift, amplifying the voices, solutions and insights of those already delivering change on the ground. This year?s programme centres on three priorities: ? Accelerating implementation of proven solutions across key sectors from food and energy, to nature and urban systems. ? Making climate action investable, inclusive and accessible to developing countries, and small businesses. ? Ensuring the next round of NDCs are fully implemented in line with science, equity, and whole-of-society momentum. Throughout the week, the Champions will engage with leaders from governments, businesses, financiers, as well as representatives from cities, regions, subnational governments and civil society. Workshops and public events include: ??????A COP 30 Presidency Global Climate Action Agenda event - Friday June 20, 13:00 - 14:30 CEST, World Conference Centre Bonn (WCCB), launching the COP President-designate?s fourth letter for the Global Climate Action Agenda at COP 30. ? Joint work on advancing the Baku to Bel?m Roadmap to scale up climate finance for developing countries by at least USD 1.3 trillion annually by 2035. ? Supporting implementation of the Global Stocktake and mobilizing nature-positive finance. ? Thematic discussions on decarbonization, adaptation and resilience. ? Engagements with local government leaders, Indigenous Peoples, youth, financiers and civil society. ? Listening sessions with the Marrakech Partnership to strengthen collaboration towards the goals of the Paris Agreement. While clean energy investment reached a record USD 2.2 trillion in 2024 ? twice that of fossil fuels ? adaptation finance remains far below the USD 194 to 366 billion needed annually. While many countries are working to translate ambition into implementation, they continue to face structural barriers: from limited access to concessional finance, to a lack of investable project pipelines. The Champions are working to bridge those barriers ? by aligning NDCs with real-economy and whole-of-society momentum, surfacing solutions from developing countries, and helping to maintain trust in the process by demonstrating that progress is both possible and underway. Accelerating Climate Action for Implementation: A New Chapter for UNFCCC Climate Weeks Launched The urgent need to scale and accelerate climate action from the real economy was a central theme at the first UNFCCC Climate Week of 2025, in their new format, held in Panama City, from 19 to 23 May. From left to right: Jos? Vicente Troya, UNDP Hub Manager; Mammad Talibov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Mexico, Nigar Arpadarai, Climate High-Level Champion for COP 29; Ana Toni, COP 30 CEO; Yalchin Rafiyev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Republic of Azerbaijan / COP 29 Chief Negotiator; Juan Navarro, Minister of Environment of Panama; Simon Stiell, UNFCCC Executive Secretary; Noura Hamladji, UNFCCC Deputy Executive Secretary; Oscar Vallarino Bernat, Vice Minister of Environment of Panama; Hilen Meirovich, Climate Change Head at IDB Invest; Juan Bello, Director, UNEP?s Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean. Leaders across civil society and the global economy gathered to align local and regional efforts with the global climate agenda to ensure momentum feeds into the intergovernmental process leading to COP 30 in Bel?m. The focus: advancing solutions that deliver for both people and the planet. UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell, called on participating nations to make a decisive shift from ambition to implementation. Climate Weeks have evolved from being discussion-based forums to action-oriented platforms, where every conversation, investment, and partnership is strategically aligned with achieving the 1.5?C climate goal and enhancing global climate resilience. The event emphasized cross-sector collaboration, bringing together governments, businesses, investors, city and region leaders, Indigenous Peoples, and civil society around practical solutions. Sessions focused on moving from commitments to measurable implementation. The Brazilian COP 30 Presidency used the platform to engage stakeholders and build momentum ahead of COP 30, sharing their vision for collective action. ?There?s still a long way to go but we have the solutions to supercharge the transition and chart a path towards a safer and healthier future - by driving ambition, sustaining momentum, and cementing a legacy of inclusive, transformative climate action,? said the Climate High-Level Champion for COP 29, Nigar Arpadarai. To shape the future of climate action, Arpadarai joined representatives of business, subnational governments, civil society, and local communities. Together with Ana Toni, CEO of COP 30 and the Climate High-Level Champion for COP 30, Dan Ioschpe, Nigar highlighted the urgent necessity to scale up solutions already underway and build on the lessons learned from previous years. Meanwhile Ioschpe reinforced the need to focus on real implementation to accelerate climate action in the years ahead. Small and Medium Enterprises were highlighted as crucial engines of climate innovation. Arpadarai engaged in discussions to address the barriers hindering the needed investments to scale solutions, highlighting that tangible real-economy action can spur systemic changes at speed and scale. Spotlighting the progress of the Race to Zero and Race to Resilience campaigns to deliver concrete actions, the Climate Champion for COP 29 emphasized that partnerships are key to ensure that the upcoming COP is not only a milestone in the climate calendar but a true turning point in the Global Climate Action Agenda. Country-level climate plans, or ?Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)? were another focal point of the discussions. Leaders from across sectors explored opportunities to unlock investment, create jobs, protect nature, and build more resilient and fairer societies through robust NDCs. Nature Summit Running in parallel with the Climate Week, the Nature Summit - co-hosted by Panama?s Ministry of Environment brought together government leaders, philanthropists, family offices, and business leaders to mobilize capital for nature. The summit aimed to strengthen global cooperation and forge partnerships to accelerate the blue and green economy transitions. Speaking at the Nature Summit, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell emphasized that next-generation climate plans can effectively drive sustainable growth. He indicated that these plans not only stimulate industries and economies but also promote a future where nature is protected. By doing so, they create better opportunities for people, generate "more jobs, more revenue and where people have better opportunities" to establish a virtuous cycle of investment and innovation. Climate Weeks Looking ahead, the ?Climate Weeks 2025: Dialogues for Ambition and Implementation? will be held twice annually in different regions, maintaining a global focus on collaboration and action. The second Climate Week is planned to take place in Africa during the first week of September ahead of COP 30. Changing the Narrative - and Scaling Indigenous Climate Leadership Guest Interview: Eileen Mairena Cunningham Eileen Mairena Cunningham, Director, Center for the Development and Autonomy of Indigenous Peoples Eileen Mairena Cunningham, a prominent Miskitu leader from Nicaragua?s Mosquito Coast, has been a dedicated advocate for Indigenous Peoples' rights and climate action for over a decade. As the focal point to the Indigenous Peoples Organizations constituency to the UNFCCC, Eileen plays a crucial role in amplifying Indigenous voices globally and integrating their knowledge system into international climate policy. In this interview, Eileen shares her insights on the intersection between traditional knowledge and modern climate strategies, discusses the barriers Indigenous communities face in accessing climate funding, and her hopes for COP 30. Please explain your current role. ? ?Primarily I'm the Indigenous Peoples focal point for the UNFCCC, serving as a bridge between Indigenous Peoples across seven sociocultural regions and the UN climate negotiations. My key focus is advocating for climate finance and ensuring Indigenous Peoples' visions and contributions are integrated into climate policy. Additionally, I work on capacity building, strengthening Indigenous networks, and preparing youth as future climate leaders. My role also involves research - to provide clear evidence of Indigenous Peoples' leadership in climate resilience and biodiversity conservation, and their contribution to the global climate goals, which includes the recently launched Global Study on Indigenous Peoples? Climate Contributions, which seeks to understand how Indigenous Peoples are responding to climate change through their practices, lived experiences and adaptive strategies. Rice terraces in the Indigenous community of Sagada, in the Cordillera region of the Philippines. Credit: Eileen Mairena Cunningham. How have Indigenous practices boosted resilience in Nicaragua? Our region is increasingly vulnerable to hurricanes, which are becoming more frequent, intense, and devastating. In 2021, within just ten days, our region endured two powerful hurricanes?one category four and one category five. Despite these back-to-back disasters, amazingly there were no fatalities, thanks to effective disaster organization, early warning systems, and Indigenous governance systems that coordinated evacuations and return strategies. After these hurricanes, entire communities were completely wiped out, with seawater pushed many miles inland by severe storm surges. In the process of rebuilding, communities focused not only on reconstructing homes, but also reviving agricultural practices through traditional methods, such as the Miskitu practice of ?intercropping? - growing native species together, which strengthens resistance to winds and floods, while also promoting soil regeneration, and reducing pests and diseases. In the Indigenous community of Waspam, Nicaragua, a Miskitu mother attends women?s rights training with her daughter. Credit: Eileen Mairena Cunningham. What obstacles prevent Indigenous communities from receiving direct funding Indigenous Peoples protect a large amount of the world?s biodiversity, but strikingly they only receive less than one percent of total climate finance. This is due to bureaucratic and restrictive funding mechanisms. Currently, funding is often channelled through intermediaries?governments or large NGOs?that impose complex administrative requirements which Indigenous groups can struggle to meet. Complex compliance requirements imposed by financial mechanisms and funding institutions are also a significant barrier to climate finance. While large NGOs are accustomed to their reporting processes, Indigenous Communities often lack the resources and familiarity to navigate them effectively. Overall, there is also a lack of trust that Indigenous governance structures are capable of implementing actions on the ground. As a result, too often Indigenous Communities go ahead and implement activities in their territories without the funding. We need far more attention on these issues and additional capacity to deal with them. How will the Global Data Study on Indigenous Peoples' help to change the narrative? The Global Data Study is a critical opportunity to generate evidence and elevate Indigenous perspectives within climate finance and policy. As a member of the Study team, I see this as more than a research project?it is an opportunity to shift the global conversation. ? For years, Indigenous Peoples have said: ?We are actively contributing to climate solutions.? The Study aims to prove that with data?tracking how Indigenous territories support both mitigation and adaptation, and spotlighting real-world examples in biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. Childhood by the river. A young Miskitu boy shows his day?s catch in the Indigenous community of Leimus, along the Wangki (R?o Coco). Nicaragua. Credit: Eileen Mairena Cunningham. Existing research shows that even small-scale funding drives impactful local change, revealing not only that traditional knowledge works, but that Indigenous Peoples can successfully manage and implement funds. The message is clear: with more support, we could scale this work exponentially. Beyond showcasing Indigenous Peoples? contributions, the Study also explores the policy and legal frameworks that enable or constrain Indigenous climate action. In countries where Indigenous Peoples have secure land rights and are recognized as self-determined actors, the impact is consistently stronger, underscoring that legal recognition and governance structures must be a foundation of effective climate policy. One of our goals is to ensure Indigenous-led conservation approaches are embedded into countries? Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs). For example, Nepal's NAP includes measures aimed at enhancing the adaptive capacity of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, acknowledging their unique contributions to climate resilience. Also, Canada's NDC commits a specific budget to support climate actions within Indigenous territories, recognizing their vital role in addressing climate change. A few countries are doing this already, but the opportunities for broader adoption and replication are enormous. Ultimately, we want the Study to identify Indigenous knowledge systems, leadership, and governance structures that are ready to scale. If embraced by climate finance institutions, the Study could be a game-changer - transforming how funds are allocated and making space for a more just and effective climate finance architecture that centers Indigenous leadership.? USD 9M+ Insurance Policy Shields Syria?s Vulnerable Communities from Drought Credit: World Food Programme. In February 2025, a USD 9.25 million climate risk insurance policy was launched to safeguard communities in Syria from the escalating impacts of drought. Developed by Race to Resilience partner, the Insurance Development Forum (IDF), in collaboration with Swiss Re, Hiscox, Howden, and the nonprofit Humanity Insured, the policy is designed to provide the World Food Programme (WFP) with prearranged financing when rainfall drops below critical levels in key agricultural regions. Triggered by satellite-monitored drought conditions, the policy will enable rapid assistance to up to 240,000 vulnerable people, ensuring timely support in times of crisis. Ivo Menzinger, Managing Director of Public Sector Business at Swiss Re, and Chair of the Insurance Development Forum Operating Committee, said: ?By ensuring rapid financial support when drought occurs, this policy demonstrates the power of collaboration in closing the crisis protection gap and strengthening food security. When combined with broader risk management measures, such as social safety nets and community-led resilience initiatives, insurance plays a critical role in safeguarding livelihoods and ensuring long-term stability.? Pernambuco recently joined the Race to Resilience as part of RegionsAdapt, aligning its vision to foster local climate adaptation solutions that in turn, inspire global action. Speaking at the summit, Priscila Krause, Acting Governor of the State of Pernambuco, commented: ?Pernambuco is marked by impressive natural and cultural diversity, home to two major biomes ? the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga ? and a rich social fabric that reveals itself in each region of our territory. This diversity is also reflected in the challenges we face regarding climate change. "Our goal is to bring together communities and people who experience the consequences of climate change on a daily basis to exchange experiences and successful practices, so that everyone can learn and take these good practices to their territories. At CBA19, Pernambuco Government also announced its State Plan for Climate Adaptation and Resilience. Speaking about the Plan, Governor Krause added: ?The proposal will ensure representation, valuing traditional knowledge and guiding actions to reduce the vulnerability of populations most exposed to climate risks, scientifically ensuring that our public policies incorporate the challenges of the present and the future." Race to Resilience partners the Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA) and the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) also showcased their commitment to locally-led adaptation at CBA19. ARA contributed to sessions on nature-based solutions, urban resilience, and adaptation finance, and led conversations on decolonising evaluation by centering community voices in defining success. Race to Zero Update: Raising the Bar: B Lab Strengthens Standards for Business Impact Credit: B Corporation. As the climate crisis intensifies and societal inequality grows, the need to bring about systemic change is clear. In response, Race to Zero Accelerator, B Lab, has unveiled an enhanced set of standards designed to equip companies with the tools to drive meaningful, sustainable impact. Since 2006, B Lab has defined the performance criteria businesses must meet and continuously improve upon to achieve and maintain B Corp Certification. The organisation has consistently refined these standards to clarify what it means to be a leading business for good, integrating feedback from diverse stakeholders to ensure relevance and rigour. Grace Son, Senior Standards Manager at B Lab Global, said: ?The B Impact Assessment has long measured company performance in collective action, focusing on key areas like external research, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and advocacy. ?The new ?Government Affairs and Collective Action (GACA)? requirement builds on this foundation by expanding the scope to include mentorship and thought leadership as additional examples of meaningful collaboration.? To date, nearly 10,000 companies across 100 countries ? employing almost a million workers across 160 industries ? have achieved B Corp certification. The new standards promise to not only deepen the impact of existing B Corps but also set a higher bar for aspiring purpose-driven businesses worldwide. Member Spotlight ? Today, as we stand on the cusp of artificial labor (AL) replacing human labor in what will be one of the broadest and deepest technology disruptions in history, the convergence of virtual reality with humanoid robotics is poised to finally open the door to teleoperation and telepresence akin to what we have imagined in fiction for nearly a century. Indeed, teleoperation of humanoid robots could well be the killer app that virtual reality headset technology has been waiting for. This is not to say that users will have an immersive ?full dive? out-of-body experience any time soon ? that will have to wait for mature brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs. But in a more crudely functional sense, the technology now exists to allow human operators to remotely control humanoid robot bodies with high-fidelity. Donkeys are being brutally slaughtered to feed demand for ejiao, a so-called miracle product made from their hides ? and it's pushing millions of families and entire communities across Africa deeper into poverty. Every time a poacher kidnaps and bludgeons a donkey to death, a family loses their only source of transport, water, or farming power. But there's a way we can help eradicate this cruel trade for good. The African Union (AU) has a major summit coming up ? and we can make sure that enforcing a ban on donkey hide exports is firmly on the agenda! We're gearing up to launch winning tactics like ads, polling, and a media blitz targeted at key decision-makers ? but we can't do it without your support. With enough public pressure we can make sure that leaders eradicate this torture trade and help protect families' livelihoods once and for all. Together, we can keep fighting for a future where all living things have a chance to thrive. Will you chip in to end the brutal donkey torture trade? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Across many areas of Africa, owning a donkey is a lifeline, lifting families from extreme poverty. They help carry water, firewood, and food, often giving women and girls the chance to go to school or earn a living. But thanks to skyrocketing demand for the gelatin made from boiled donkey hides, this cruel trade has ballooned completely out of control. Criminals steal donkeys from families, often hurriedly killing them with hammers or skinning them alive in forests, then ship them abroad in pieces. Too often, losing a donkey to traffickers forces women and children to take on the strenuous work once done by the animal. The consequences can be deadly, which forced the AU to take action last year when it banned donkey hide exports. It was a historic step toward eradicating this donkey horror trade. But despite the ban, the killing hasn?t stopped. Instead, it?s driven the trade underground as illegal traders rush to cash in, fueling violence as they rip donkeys from communities that depend on them. What?s needed is the political will to take on this problem head-on, properly investigate the donkey trade and put resources towards ending it once and for all. Which is where we come in: together we can force REAL action, launching strategic polling across key countries in advance of the next AU summit, taking out hard-hitting digital ads targeting key decision-makers, and working with local communities to place unignorable media stories highlighting this crisis. Our team is ready to launch and we?re in a final push to get the resources to pull it off. Will you chip in to help us put key decision-makers on notice that enforcement is non-negotiable ? and fight to defend all animals from cruelty? Mexico could set a global precedent ending the captivity of dolphins for entertainment purposes. Let's tell the Mexican authorities to approve the Mincho Law to end this cruel industry. Sign the petition Mincho, a captive dolphin in a resort hotel near Canc?n, smashed his head on concrete and nearly died during a show. The operator forced him to keep performing after that ? today, Mincho is almost blind. After years of pressure from activists,- and our 40,000 signatures strong petition - the Mexican environmental authority PROFEPA finally shut down this dolphin torture tank. It?s a huge win ? and now we can take this victory to the next level. We have the chance to shape a historic law: The Mincho Law could ban dolphin captivity in all of Mexico! Lawmakers are favoring it, but feeling the pressure from Mexico?s massive tourism lobby. For it to pass before summer break, we need to create a massive global wave of support ? join our urgent call now: Tell Mexican lawmakers: Pass the Mincho Law and end dolphin captivity for good! Dolphinariums are tiny prisons disguised as entertainment. These intelligent, social animals are forced to perform dangerous tricks, even when they?re sick or undergoing treatment. In the wild, dolphins swim for miles every day ? but in these tanks, they can barely turn in circles. The result is unbearable stress and physical decline. There are still *hundreds* of captive dolphins in Mexico ? it belongs to the top 5 countries keeping 10% of the world?s captive dolphins. With this law, we can change that ? if we act together. We need use the momentum that PROFEPA shut down the torture tank from the Barcel? Riviera Maya hotel. Let?s make sure Mincho is the last dolphin nearly killing itself to perform for human entertainment ? add your name now: Tell Mexican lawmakers: Pass the Mincho Law and end dolphin captivity for good! This is a money-making and job-creating industry, but we cannot normalise the exploitation of animals for fun. While some may claim they are being "treated well," there is nothing natural about forcing dolphins to jump and interact with humans. Our community has come together to end dolphin and orca captivity time and again, like when we called on this dolphin torture tank to be permanently shut down ? and won! The Journey of Jonas" A Poetic Underwater Odyssey La Ciotat, June 26, 2025 On the occasion of World Ocean Day, Bluearth Production announced the launch of the film "INSPIRATION ? The Journey of Jonas", an 8-minute short film blending visual poetry, freediving, and mythical storytelling featuring world champion Morgan Bourc'his. "INSPIRATION" takes us on an underwater odyssey where the ocean and the wild become catalysts for both personal and societal renewal. The film, nominated at the prestigious Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF), is NOW available on Bluearth Production's platform. SYNOPSIS INSPIRATION is a poetic and visual reimagining of the myth of Jonah, told through a symbolic aquatic world. The film offers an inner journey, a necessary metamorphosis from darkness to light ? a deeply personal passage that echoes the collective transformations of our time. ?Each dive feels like a slow and progressive transformation shaped by the surroundings. Gradually, a strong sense of belonging emerges, and I become a native of the vastness before me.?? Morgan Bourc?his, Freediver Caught by a jaw-shaped formation in the underwater cliffs, a man begins a surreal odyssey into the belly of the ocean, guided by a mysterious whale. A poetic dive toward rebirth. THE WHALE AS A CENTRAL CHARACTER: Inspired by a real stranding event in 2011, the whale is both a living landscape, a poetic conscience, and a symbol of regeneration. ?The myth of Jonah is a matrix of transformation. In this film, the ocean becomes a sacred space, a place of inner catharsis.? ? Jean-Charles Granjon, Director THE STORY BEHIND THE FILM It all began with the meeting of Jean-Charles Granjon and Morgan Bourc?his, triple world champion in freediving ? but above all, an exceptional human being. From this connection came a shared desire: to explore ancient founding myths, particularly that of Jonah. Beyond the human adventure, Inspiration is also a bold technical journey, blending real footage with visual animation. The film was made possible thanks to the expertise of La Plan?te Rouge, under the direction of Lionel Payet-Pigeon, and the meticulous editing work of Julien Climent. The project remained on hold for several years, until a decisive encounter brought it back to life ? that of L?o Doboka-Sauvage, a talented composer whose mesmerizing music gave the film its renewed energy and depth. Out of over 7,000 film festivals globally, only six hold this dual qualification. Being selected by the RIFF represents a significant artistic and cinematic honor. I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Your donation will help power Ek? and our campaigns worldwide fighting for people and the planet. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. > News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JUNE 27, 2025 Vanishing Shores THE FERRY SLIPPED out of Dumaguete?s city port just before dawn. On the roof deck, I joined the scattered silhouettes of morning people, each of us drawn there by an unspoken desire to greet the sea. I breathed deeply, greedily, each inhale a cool balm easing the back of my throat and each exhale exiting as a faint fog. I was heading back home, to Zamboanga, a city on another island some 16 hours south of the Philippines? Central Visayas region, where I had once lived. This particular return weighed heavily on me. As the ferry cut through the waves, I found myself thinking of my ancestors who had once traveled these same waters, moving from one coastal home to another across the country?s islands in search of better fishing grounds ? guided only by knowledge passed down among navigators in their communities and the very real need to provide food for the family. The whisper of the breeze and the gentle rocking of the ferry seemed to carry echoes of their existence, drifting like the sea?s own breath, reminding me of the threads that still bound me to them. I grew up immersed in seafaring tales. I heard stories of how, once, after enduring days with no substantial catch, my maternal grandfather and his brother ventured out on the cold, open waters off their fishing village in Cotabato, on the island of Mindanao. When they returned, my great-uncle developed a fever and severe cough. By the time they sought help, it was too late. A month after he died, news spread through their fishing village that those who ventured farther south to the Zamboanga Peninsula were met with bountiful catches. The same news had reached my paternal grandparents in village of Iloilo, in the Western Visayas, which inspired them to make the journey as well. In the 1950s, both families settled in Zamboanga, unaware that they would be among the last generations of artisanal fisherfolk in their lines. As the ferry hummed along, I wondered how these landscapes had shaped us ? and what it means to stay rooted when those very landscapes begin to vanish. An Entire U.S. State Is Being Poisoned with Pesticides. Sign the Petition to Ban Pesticides Now! Sign Now Scientists have been warning for decades about the dangers of pesticide use ? and now the damage has become only too obvious. In agricultural areas of Iowa, a U.S. state known for its vast farming industry, cancer is now "everywhere." The American Cancer Society is calling this a cancer "crisis." Out of all U.S. states, Iowa's rate of cancer has been the second-highest for the last few years ? and its rates are increasing. Authorities are trying to blame alcohol consumption, but residents are tracing their increasing rates of cancer to the use of pesticides, including glyphosate or RoundUp by Monsanto, on farms all over the state. When these poisons are sprayed over crops, they go into the air, onto our food, and seep into the local water supply, harming local children and adults alike. The World Health Organization classified glyphosate, a weed-killer, as probably carcinogenic back in 2015 ? 10 years ago. Research has tied the use of many pesticides to a whole variety of illnesses and diseases, obviously including cancer, but not limited to this. Most farming organizations are refusing to consider how their industry could be poisoning an entire state's worth of people. But we cannot abandon people who live in rural, country areas to this explosion of cancer just because corporate interests want us to look the other way. Sign the petition to protect everyday people from poisoning by pesticide use! Don't let agricultural corporations' giant lobbying influence stop lawmakers from doing the right thing. Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Around 87% of Iowa's land is used for farming. Most of the farms use pesticides. And now cancer is "everywhere." Sign the petition.
