                                Dear subscribers,

Coastal development, large-scale projects without impact assessments, polluted rivers, wildfires, and a lack of transparency — all of these point not only to climate change, but also to systemic failures in natural resource management. In this issue: the Bonn climate talks, the Roghun Dam, and a locust invasion. We explore where decisions are made behind closed doors, and where inaction is already taking a toll on ecosystems.

New opportunities for activists are listed at the end of this issue.

We’re always open to hearing your thoughts, ideas, or stories — don’t hesitate to get in touch.

                                Sincerely,

What was discussed at the Bonn climate talks — and why it matters for EECCA
Key climate negotiations took place in June in Bonn to shape the COP30 agenda in Brazil. For the EECCA countries, this was a crucial chance to make their voices heard amid a serious shortfall in climate financing. Representatives of the CAN EECCA network attended the talks and shared their impressions.

Ukraine: How climate, war, and abandoned land created perfect conditions for a locust invasion
Locusts are rapidly multiplying on the dried lands of the Kakhovka Reservoir, and farmers are warning of potentially catastrophic crop losses.

Kyrgyzstan: Vertical Greening Contest Announced in Bishkek
CAN EECCA network member "MoveGreen" together with the Bishkek City Hall, supported by the UN Environment Programme and international agency Bread for the World, has launched a competition among residential buildings in Bishkek to green their façades with vertical landscaping.

Earth Overshoot Day has arrived again
On July 24, 2025, the world once again marked Earth Overshoot Day — a stark reminder that humanity has used up all the renewable natural resources the planet can regenerate in a year and is now living on ecological credit.

Georgia launches program to restore Red List noble deer population
Initiated by the National Wildlife Agency under the "National Species Recovery Plan", the program opened a 60-hectare deer breeding farm in Algeti National Park.

Kazakhstan: River in central Aktobe turns into swamp
The canal is overgrown with algae and reeds, and emits a foul smell. 15 million tenge was allocated from the city budget for cleanup. Experts say the issue is worsened by extreme heat.

Germany to continue supporting Moldova in environmental protection
Germany is a key partner of Moldova, as evidenced by tangible actions: projects to improve energy efficiency in schools, waste management, and water and sanitation systems are underway thanks to German support.

Armenia’s Environment Minister: Mountain ecosystems are most vulnerable to climate change
The minister highlighted the 2022–2026 climate adaptation plan and outlined steps including water-saving technologies, water management reforms, and infrastructure to reduce water loss.

Sea Breeze Uzbekistan project to undergo public consultation
Mid-July reports of construction near Charvak Reservoir sparked public backlash. Activists voiced concern over restricted water access, strain on infrastructure, environmental risks, and lack of transparency.

Azerbaijan: 83 fires near forests and natural areas since start of the year
Hot and dry weather has sharply increased fire risk in green zones. Studies show human activity remains the main cause of forest fires.

Potential threats from Roghun Dam to Central Asia’s ecosystems
Changes to the Vakhsh River’s flow during the dam's construction and reservoir filling could significantly reduce water flow into the Amu Darya, harming downstream ecosystems, agriculture, and water supply.

UN Chief: “We are at the dawn of a new energy era”
According to the UN Secretary-General, $2 trillion was invested in clean energy last year — $800 billion more than in fossil fuels, and nearly 70 percent more than a decade ago.

UN’s top court rules climate inaction is a violation of law
While the ruling is not legally binding, it carries significant moral and political weight and could mark a turning point in global climate policy.

The program supports initiatives aimed at restoring nature, combating climate change, strengthening community bonds, and promoting creative partnerships. Important: projects must be sustainable, have a clear plan, demonstrate relevant experience, and show significant impact from the grant.
