                                Dear subscribers,

In Aktau, satellites are spotting fresh oil
slicks in the Caspian Sea every week. In a village in Altai, locals are
rallying against gold mining. Armenia is rolling out a new waste management
reform, Moldova is paying people back for returned bottles, and Uzbekistan
is planting “smart” forests. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have pledged to join
forces in the fight against pollution.

Meanwhile, fish are dying en masse in
Azerbaijan, and Belarus is dealing with the aftermath of severe storms. On
the global front, the G20 is pressing pause on climate action, while China
delays setting new targets until autumn.

New opportunities for activists are listed
at the end of this issue.

We’re always open to hearing your thoughts,
ideas, or stories — don’t hesitate to get in touch.

                                Sincerely,

                                World Climate and Energy News

                                G20’s financial watchdog presents climate
plan but pauses work amid divisions
In its mid-term roadmap, the Financial
Stability Board (FSB) pledged to enhance coordination and data-sharing on
climate-related financial risks. However, while acknowledging progress on
integrating climate risks into the financial system, the FSB noted that some
members — including central bank heads and finance ministers — have
expressed a desire to pause further work.

EU prepares to cut emissions by 90% by 2040
                                The European Commission has proposed
amendments to the EU Climate Law, setting a target to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. This goal aligns with the
Commission’s 2024–2029 political priorities. It is expected to provide
predictability for investors, stimulate innovation, strengthen industrial
leadership, and enhance Europe’s energy security. According to the latest
Eurobarometer survey, EU citizens show strong support for climate action,
reinforcing the mandate to continue the green transition.

China tells EU its new NDC will be submitted
this autumn
Both China and the EU missed the February
deadline for submitting updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)
to the UN, which outline how much each country intends to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions by 2035. These submissions are key to evaluating global
progress in preventing catastrophic levels of warming.
