                                Dear subscribers,

Climate action is increasingly driving political decisions and civic mobilization. Countries in the region are discussing local adaptation measures and launching pilot environmental projects. Yet warning signs are multiplying: oil slicks are spreading across the Caspian Sea, algae are rapidly overtaking Lake Issyk-Kul, and armed conflicts are targeting critical resources like lithium. Globally, calls are growing to criminalize climate disinformation and restore canceled environmental grants in the U.S. — before the consequences of the crisis become irreversible.

New opportunities for activists are listed at the end of this issue.

We’re always open to hearing your thoughts, ideas, or stories — don’t hesitate to get in touch.

                                Sincerely,

Caspian Sea under threat: New oil spills reported weekly
According to the global environmental movement Save the Caspian Sea, as of June 23, nearly 40 oil slicks have been detected, covering more than 64 square kilometers in coastal and open sea zones. Pollution has been recorded in the sectors of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Turkmenistan.

Russian forces seize key lithium deposit in eastern Ukraine
Russian troops have taken control of Shevchenko village in Donetsk oblast, home to one of Ukraine’s significant lithium deposits. This marks the second of four major lithium reserves to fall under occupation, dealing a blow to Ukraine’s future energy potential and raising international concern over control of this critical resource for the green economy.

Moldova: Climate resilience for local development
More than 80 local government representatives gathered at the National Conference "Climate Resilience for Local Development" to discuss adaptation strategies and nature-based solutions. As part of the event, the cities of Cantemir and Ceadîr-Lunga received EU grant certificates to implement two pilot projects with a total budget exceeding 20.7 million Moldovan leu.

Toxic sand from Black Sea beaches dumped in rural areas
Following the sinking of two tankers in the Kerch Strait, around 160,000 tons of oil-contaminated sand were collected from beaches near Anapa. A BBC investigation found that the toxic sand is being dumped in open-air, ill-equipped sites—mainly in small rural settlements—where fumes are polluting the air and harming local residents.

Uzbekistan launches pilot project to produce methane from biogas
Uzbekistan is piloting a methane production facility using biogas derived from biological waste. The initiative targets several environmental and economic goals, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, safe waste disposal, production of biohumus for agriculture, and the implementation of hybrid circulation technology with chemical treatment and deep purification based on Japanese standards.

Algae crisis in Issyk-Kul: Scientists raise alarm
A construction boom of tourist sites, industrial projects, and expanded agriculture around Kyrgyzstan’s Issyk-Kul lake is causing serious environmental concern. Scientists warn that the lake is shrinking rapidly and being overtaken by algae. Without urgent intervention, the country risks losing one of its natural treasures.

Over 1,900 tons of pollutants released into Kyiv region’s atmosphere during drone strikes
In just two days of Russian drone strikes on Kyiv and surrounding areas, over 1,900 tons of harmful emissions were released into the air, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources. June saw some of the most destructive drone attacks on the capital region. Preliminary damage estimates put the environmental cost at over 5.7 million UAH.

1,000 green walls for Bishkek: schools and homes go green
The "1,000 Green Walls" project is transforming Bishkek’s buildings into living air filters. Launched in early June by the NGO MoveGreen in partnership with the city administration, UNEP, and Bread for the World, the initiative has already added vertical greenery to several public schools and a residential building in the Vostok-5 district. Green façades improve air quality and contribute to residents’ well-being.

Kazakhstan: Environmental rights proposed for constitutional reform
Grigory Vingertеr, environmental advisor to the mayor of Stepnogorsk, has called on the President of Kazakhstan to enshrine citizens’ right to a healthy and sustainable environment in the Constitution. He argues this would foster environmental awareness, enhance public involvement in decision-making, and drive stronger green reforms across the country.

UN expert urges criminalizing fossil fuel disinformation, banning lobbying
A leading UN expert is calling for criminal penalties against those peddling disinformation about the climate crisis and a total ban on fossil fuel industry lobbying and advertising, as part of a radical shake-up to safeguard human rights and curtail planetary catastrophe. Elisa Morgera, the UN special rapporteur on human rights and climate change who presents her damning new report to the general assembly in Geneva on Monday, argues that the US, UK, Canada, Australia and other wealthy fossil fuel nations are legally obliged under international law to fully phase out oil, gas and coal by 2030 – and compensate communities for harms caused.

Bonn climate talks: Key outcomes from the June 2025 UN climate conference
Climate negotiators have wrapped up another two weeks of technical talks in the German city of Bonn, seeking to make breakthroughs on critical issues before COP30 in Brazil. The UN negotiations were marked by protracted “agenda fights” and calls for developed countries to provide more funding for climate action in developing countries. This year, the meetings came in the wake of a UN climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, which disappointed many and, combined with the election of Donald Trump as US president, left some questioning the future of multilateral climate negotiations.

A Class-Action Lawsuit Aims to Restore Climate and Environmental Grants
The lawsuit claims the Trump administration violated the separation of powers when it ordered the cancellation of $3 billion in grants for community-based projects. “The EPA’s termination of the program is unlawful,” the complaint says. “It violates the bedrock separation-of-powers principles by effectively repealing a congressional enactment and impounding funds based on nothing more than the President’s disagreement with policies Congress duly enacted.”

LCOY Kazakhstan 2025 to be held on August 22–23 in Astana
The national youth climate conference will gather up to 100 participants from across the country as part of the global YOUNGO process (the official youth constituency of UNFCCC). The program includes panel sessions, workshops, masterclasses, and the development of a national youth climate statement to be presented at COP30.

                                WGC/WECF Climate Grants Competition
The Gender Just Climate Solutions Awards program, organized by the Women & Gender Constituency (WGC) and WECF, supports projects that combine gender equality with climate solutions. The competition is open to NGOs, activist groups, and women's organizations.
Grants of €5,000 will be awarded to 3 winners, plus an invitation to COP30 in Brazil.

The Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP), hosted by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security, has announced a fellowship program for journalists from low- and middle-income countries (all EECCA countries are eligible) who are interested in covering the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30).
