Anastassia Makarieva Jan 2 READ IN APP As the New Year 2025 opens its horizons, please allow me to offer a few thoughts for discussion. The concept of biotic regulation provides a distinct perspective on why we need wilderness. There is the carbon-centric view: we believe that we need trees to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. Strictly speaking, this view is not about wilderness or nature at all, because its logical extension is to cut down trees (understood as ?carbon sticks?) and bury or burn them to make room for new sticks. Another view is that we need wilderness to maintain biodiversity, the number of species on Earth. This view has its own controversies. If you take boreal and temperate forests, for example, they don?t have as many species as tropical forests. We can safely conserve all of their species locally, say, in Scandinavia. Does that mean that the remaining wilderness in the boreal forests doesn?t need to be protected?he proposition stemming from the biotic regulation concept is that we need to protect natural self-sustaining ecosystems in an area sufficient for them to perform their climate-regulating function on a regional and global scale. That is to say, we should not protect wild nature as an ecological museum. We should protect wild nature as a working mechanism for climate stabilization. It is important to note that since we do not quite understand how the climate system works, we must assume that natural ecosystems will work most efficiently when left without our intervention. We can in no way improve their functioning. To visualize this idea, imagine that the Earth can have several climate states, not all of which are equally favorable to modern life. With environmental regulation by natural ecosystems, the Earth sits comfortably around 15 degrees Celsius as a global average surface temperature. There is a safe potential pit in this temperature range. As we disrupt natural ecosystems and impair their climate regulation function, the pit becomes shallower and eventually disappears. If we also add CO2, which pushes the Earth toward a warmer state, we could see a sharp and unfavorable increase in global average surface temperature. The scenario shown in the above two graphs is certainly radical*, but it conveys the concept of why we need wilderness, and how much of it. We need enough wilderness to provide sufficient stability for all the environmental parameters we care about. In simple words, to ensure that the potential pit of our existence is comfortably deep and favorably situated in the parameter space. (E.g., precipitation in a desert can be stably near zero, but this is not the type of stability that we would appreciate.) Of course, it is not just about temperature and precipitation. It is, in the words of Chuck Pezeshki, an ultra complex multidimensional optimization problem. Natural ecosystems simultaneously optimize biological productivity, temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloud cover, continental moisture transport, soil moisture, nitrogen, phosphorus and other critically important biogens, and they also stabilize themselves against internal disruptions (like deadly insect outbreaks). This last aspect provides clues to the priorities of protection. All ecosystems that are still capable of self-regeneration must be protected from our exploitation as much as possible. Stop taking from them. They are our gold standard, our ultimate treasure. Efforts to define this important concept of ecosystem self-sustainability, for which we do not even have a suitable expression, are ongoing. We hear about stable forests and high-integrity forests, and in terms of strategies, the outstanding concept of proforestation has recently been formulated. To this intellectual quest, the biotic regulation concept adds the perspective of scale: we need natural ecosystems to do their job of regulating the climate massively around the globe. So why is protecting natural ecosystems not a major focus of climate negotiations? One reason for our archaically primitive views on ecosystem functioning is that our ecological knowledge is heavily biased toward systems that are severely disturbed by human activity. Such systems are inherently unstable themselves and obviously do not stabilize the environment and climate. Let us have a look. The graph below depicts the extant intact forests that show no sign of human interference during the satellite era. What what they are worth, these are our proxies for natural self-sustainable forests. The second graph shows the distribution of flux towers that measure important atmospheric processes and parameters including evaporation, transpiration and transport of tracers like CO2 or biogenic aerosols. We can see that the vast majority of measurements (translated into the vast majority of publications and the vast majority of students doing their Phd theses about) are made outside the regions occupied by natural forests in areas profoundly transformed (degraded) by anthropogenic activities. I would like to highlight one of the very few points in Siberia (Zotino, the red dot), which Andrei Nefiodov and I visited in 2020. This flux tower is situated in an area surrounded by secondary forests disturbed by clearcuts and legacy fires (see this paper about legacy fires and this one about fire-related landscape traps). Here is a typical view of forests surrounding the tower: Compare this to an undisturbed boreal forest: (Photo courtesy of Alexei Aleinikov, the forest did not burn for several hundred (!) years). The third map below is from a recent global study of ecosystem resilience. It speaks for itself. We do not study natural, self-sustainable, resilient ecosystems. We have excluded them from consideration. It is like if some aliens were studying human health, and the very capacity of humans as living beings, from inside a big hospital. After studying the patients suffering from various serious diseases, the aliens would conclude that humans are fragile creatures totally dependent on the external supply of medicine and intellectually quite uneventful. They would hardly figure out that humans are able to discover the laws of nature and perform ambitious environmental transformations on their basis. They could deduce very little about the human capacity to create art and would not believe that the best of classical music could have been composed by those strangely morbid apes. Indeed, when we are ill or humiliated, we are far from our best. Unfortunately, our knowledge about natural ecosystems is similarly heavily distorted. We greatly underappreciate them. Historically, our misconceptions about how natural ecosystems work are so deeply ingrained that we don?t even recognize, let alone understand the importance of, the counter-evidence when by any chance we do stumble upon it. I?ll discuss some conspicuous examples on another occasion. (In passing, I note that seeing the truth in this chaos requires a viewpoint from outside this chaos. Lovelock had such a viewpoint of a space scientist. Gorshkov had such a viewpoint of an outstanding theoretical physicist who additionally spent years in untouched wilderness.) Here I would like to conclude by listing three goals that I consider worthy of discussion and implementation: 1. Elevate protection of the remaining self-sustainable natural ecosystems, on land and in the ocean, to a top priority in the international climate change mitigation agenda. If we lose their climate-regulating potential, we are doomed to a global environmental collapse even under the ?zero emissions? scenario. 2. Restore biological productivity on degraded lands, to lessen the anthropogenic pressure on the remaining self-sustainable natural ecosystems. The climate-regulating potential of the ecosystem cannot be maximized simultaneously with its economic potential. The ecosystem resources expropriated by humans are diverted from the regulatory processes that become less and less effective. 3. Launch a focused global effort to study the climate-regulating potential of natural ecosystems including ?soil carbon dynamics ?ecosystem impact on, and control of, cloud cover ?ecosystem impact on, and control of, local temperature regime ?ecosystem mediation of the atmospheric moisture transport as dependent on the degree of ecosystem disturbance. Recognize ecosystem disturbance as a key dimension in the studies of biota-environment interactions. Quantify salient differences in environmental responses of intact versus managed (disturbed, exploited) ecosystems. To summarize, natural ecosystems are powerful mechanisms of climate stabilization. If we exploit them more, their regulatory function is impaired adding to climate destabilization, including water cycle calamities. Curbing the on-going exploitation of natural ecosystems is feasible and represents a vital part of strategies to mitigate global change. Words make sense only within the framework of their language. If a language dies, words lose their meaning. In the four-billion-year journey of Life, our civilization is a new word, and wild nature is the primordial language. If we lose our ground base ? the wild nature, our civilization will become a chimera, a sand castle that will not last long. *For interested readers, I discussed how these stability graphs relate to the planetary boundaries in my recent talk at the EcoSummit ?Eco-Civilization for Sustainable and Desirable Future? in China (slides here). Message-ID: <97D691987B864C0ABDD7B26ED24FD6D4@lewpostnew> Demand a ban on the use of hazardous "sewage sludge" fertilizers. Toxic 'Sewage Sludge' Fertilizer Is Contaminating Your Groceries with PFAS Forever Chemicals Sign Now For decades, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been encouraging farmers to use "sewage sludge" ? a byproduct of wastewater treatment ? as a fertilizer for crops across the United States. But this sludge is laced with toxic "forever chemicals" known as PFAS that poison our soil, water, food, and bodies. PFAS are virtually indestructible, linked to devastating health impacts like cancer, birth defects, and immune system disorders. PFAS chemicals from sewage sludge wind up absorbed into soil, crops, and groundwater, creating a never-ending cycle of contamination. Shockingly, the EPA has known about this contamination since 2003, when giant chemical corporation 3M revealed research that showed alarming levels of PFAS in sewage sludge. Additionally, scientists within the EPA have been ringing alarm bells for years! The EPA has already stated that there's "no safe level" of exposure to PFAS, and designated some as hazardous. Despite this, the EPA continues to encourage the practice to this day ? without requiring any PFAS testing. Sign this petition to demand the EPA immediately ban the use of sewage sludge as fertilizer, and mandate nationwide testing for PFAS in all sludge and farmland! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. The EPA has a duty to protect the environment and, by association, public health. Why is it overlooking this important mandate? Sign the petition. Inspired by the work of Anastassia Makarieva and Ugo Bardi, I am happy to share with you this recent article ?A Simple Board Game for Modeling the System Dynamics of Deforestation ? that was just published on Qeios as a preprint: https://www.qeios.com/read/U5Q11B Based at the intersection of forests/deforestation, system dynamics and games, I tried to work out a simple-to-use board game to hopefully transport some of the (sometimes quite challenging) concepts to younger generations that are not so familiar with maths: What strikes me most in the first test runs of the game was that me and the players (actually, my two kids were the first to enjoy the game ?) observed a dynamics that Ugo once coined as the ?Seneca collapse? (see figure below, right hand side): Currently, I am analyzing (playing) the the game further with my students and pupils at schools. So far, we have played the game more than 170 times ? and the ?collapse? scenario seems to be the most frequent outcome. Of course, people are arguing that this is just a game that does certainly not (completely) reflect reality. However, the people playing the game are the same homo sapiens responsible for deforestation in the real world. So maybe there is something to learn from all of this. In this context, Friedrich Schiller, one of the great German poets and philosophers of the late 18th and early 19th century, once said: ?Man only plays when he is in the fullest sense of the word a human being, and he is only human when he plays? If you would like to have a look at the article and comment on it (Qeios has an open peer-review system that looks very interesting and promising to me) I would highly appreciate your feedback that you leave there. Demand Global Action to Fight Hunger! Sign Now Every day, millions of children and families face hunger so severe that their very survival is uncertain. Yet, as the global hunger crisis grows, aid from the world's wealthiest nations is actually shrinking, leaving 117 million people without critical humanitarian support in 2025. Germany has reduced its humanitarian aid by $500 million, and the U.S. may follow soon as well, despite being the largest contributor. The incoming Trump administration has indicated it will consider foreign humanitarian aid as a possible source of "waste." The United Nations has already slashed rations in places like Syria, where families are told, "We're taking from the hungry to feed the starving." Meanwhile, major economies like China and India, whose wealth rivals global leaders, contribute less than 1% of the UN's humanitarian aid budget. Countries capable of hosting the Olympics and landing on the moon cannot ignore the cries of starving children. No child should go hungry in a world of abundance. This is not just a funding issue ? it's a moral failure. This injustice costs lives. In 59 countries, nearly 282 million people already face severe food insecurity. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JANUARY 3, 2025 Refugee Seeds WHERE MY FAMILY is from on the Lebanon-Syria border in the arid Bekaa Valley, wave after wave of armed conflicts over millennia have decimated rural families, destroyed their food supplies, seed stores, and irrigation canals, forcing many of the survivors to flee as refugees to other lands. A century ago, my grandparents, aunts, and uncles fled the Bekaa Valley during the Ottoman War, when drought, locust plagues, and mulberry crop failures simultaneously impacted their livelihoods and food security. They arrived as undocumented refugees in the United States on routes that took them through Ellis Island, Windsor, Ontario, or El Paso-Juarez after to sailing across the Atlantic to the Eastern Seaboard, St. Lawrence River, or Yucatan Peninsula. Most of us know or have heard of farmers, herders, and orchard-keepers like my kin who have had to escape from wars and climate change. But how many of us recognize that along with their displacement from the homelands, ?refugee seeds? are generated as well? During most wars, rural communities have suffered insults on top of grave injuries: While grieving the loss of family members and destruction of their properties, the seed stocks they need to recover are often damaged or destroyed as well. A century ago, agricultural scientists devised a ?back-up? system to help farmers safeguard and recover their heirloom seeds under such circumstances: seed banks. By collectively placing seeds in a reserve where they were protected from the elements and from military conflicts, farmers could take seeds from the bank after a disaster and move toward recovery much more rapidly. Because of their capacity to help humanity after wars, floods, droughts, or famine, the seed banks ? like hospitals and places of spiritual renewal ? were considered sacrosanct. They were envisioned as demilitarized sanctuaries that were meant to be kept safe during times of internecine strife. That isn?t happening in the current war in the Middle East, where ?scorched earth? strategies that have been used for centuries to starve and cripple adversaries are being used extensively. Political ecologist and ethnobotanist Gary Paul Nabhan writes about how the war in the Middle East threatens to force some of the most desert-adapted seed collections in the world into ?refugee status?in this Winter print magazine feature. This is the key message of the WBGU report entitled 'Water in a heated World'. Water emergencies beyond the scope of previous experience are becoming more frequent worldwide. The effects of climate change, the overexploitation of water resources, the unequal distribution of water, the loss of ecosystem services, growing widespread pollution and related health risks are increasingly resulting in regional water emergencies. This development is characterized by a loss of stationarity and therefore increasing planning uncertainty. Recent examples include the declaration of a water emergency in S?o Paulo, Brazil due to extreme drought conditions, large-scale catastrophic flooding events such as those which occurred a few weeks ago in Eastern and Southern Europe or Northern Africa or severe flooding that submerged one third of Pakistan in 2022. The WBGU expect such regional water emergencies to occur to a greater extent, longer lasting, and more and more frequently. This is a pattern arising in many regions representing a threat with a global dimension. In extreme cases, situations emerge that are beyond the limits of controllability. They can lead to the destabilization of political, societal and ecological systems. Climate-change mitigation, the protection of ecosystems and a climate-resilient, socially balanced water management are the most important measures for preventing water emergencies. How water policy, water planning and societies worldwide should deal with these challenges ? this report provides answers. Is on Fire and the Mayor's Firefighting Budget Cuts Are Making It Worse Sign Now Five people, perhaps more, have already died in the fires raging through Los Angeles, California. In the span of only 2 days so far, entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ashes due to multiple concurrent fires. Thousands of homes, schools, and businesses are gone. These are the most devastating wildfires Los Angeles has seen in years, yet the budget for the fire department ? the city's first line of defense ? was recently gutted. Several months ago, Mayor Karen Bass and the L.A. City Council slashed $17.6 million from the Los Angeles Fire Department's budget. This decision has left firefighters scrambling for resources at a time when lives are hanging in the balance. There have even been reports of empty fire hydrants, with no water in them! Brave firefighters are fighting an impossible battle with inadequate tools. Right now, wildfires rage across over 7,500 acres, driven by wind gusts reaching 99 mph. Over 1,100 structures have already been lost, including children's schools, and homes for both celebrities and working-class families alike. Hundreds of thousands of residents have received orders to either evacuate. The fires are still at 0% containment. It is especially important to make sure that the L.A. fire department is properly and fully funded, since we already know that climate change is going to make these types of fires worse in the future. The L.A. City Council and Mayor must immediately restore full funding to the fire department, ensuring they have the resources to protect us from future disasters. Sign the petition now! News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JANUARY 10, 2025 In With Abundance I?m not big on New Year?s resolutions, but I do like to take the beginning of the year to set out some intentions. This year, I?d like to do more surfing and more personal writing. To help me, I have started keeping a ?wave journal,? jotting down my thoughts any time I come back in from a surf. I note the time and tide, a memorable wave or wipeout, and any glimpse of wisdom the ocean has to share. I recently read The Serviceberry, a new offering from Potawatomi botanist and author Robin Wall Kimmerer, who encourages us to think in terms of abundance, instead of scarcity, and I decided to apply that thinking to my surfing. I tend to let impatience push me too close to shore, then get taken by surprise by bigger sets. Now, instead of getting down on myself when I miss a wave or get crushed by a breaker, I take a moment to remind myself that there?s no shortage of waves and no shortage of time to catch them. I take a deep breath, paddle myself into a better position, and get ready for the next one. I?m happy to report this has worked incredibly well, allowing for calm and focus in the surf. Last week, in fact, I caught one of the best waves of my life, on a day with waves so small I almost didn?t even paddle out. Back on shore, I jotted this lesson down in my wave journal, and, because I?m a word-nerd, I started wondering about the origins of the word ?abundance.? I learned it comes to us from Latin, from abundare, which means to overflow. Deeper inside the word is undare, ?rise in a wave,? and deeper still we get unda, from an ancient word for ?wet.? So not only did I get a great lesson from the ocean, but I also got a jolt of serendipity. Abundance, indeed. As a journalist steeped in climate coverage, I need moments like these. We all have plenty to worry about. Our politics are getting crueler, the planet is in peril, and nature?s out of whack. Even as I write this, a major swath of the country is recovering from brutal winter storms, and Los Angeles is confronting multiple devastating fires. But to think in terms of scarcity, to only see what?s lacking (or horrible), is to miss the gifts that bolster us. Good things do happen. Progress does happen. But it comes in increments, like droplets of water, so small you might miss them, drip, drip, dripping toward an overflow. We hope that in 2025 you will be surrounded by the support of friends, family and community, and that your ideas will develop and come to fruition. May you be accompanied by inspiration, success and joy! We naturally hope that this year Russia?s war in Ukraine will come to an end. Even if it does, this will not mean that our work will be done. The manner in which the country is rebuilt will determine not only Ukraine?s future, but that of the entire region. Today, when environmental movements all over the world are coming under pressure, it is important that islands of ?green development? appear everywhere. And Ukraine has the potential to become one of these centers. However, a lot of work needs to be done in order to achieve this. One of the main problems that will face Ukraine after the end of the war is, of course, landmines. There is no historical precedent for mining on such a vast scale in a European country. Almost 30% of the country is mined ? a statistic which puts Ukraine ahead of even countries such as Afghanistan and Syria, where wars lasted for decades. Oleksiy Vasyliuk, head of the Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group and UWEC Work Group expert, explains what methods can be used to solve the problem, where demining operations can begin and which areas to leave for the preservation and development of nature: a.. Caution, mines! The future of mined landscapes Agricultural areas suffer most from mining. As of January 2024, Ukraine has lost almost 20% of its cultivated land since the war began. Many of these areas are either under occupation, contaminated by military action, or both. Restoring agricultural land after the war is an important process that will allow the country not only to recover economically, but also to improve the ecological situation by cleaning the soil. Ukrainian scientist Oksana Datsko?s article, written especially for UWEC Work Group, looks at what methods have already been tested and can be used: a.. Seeds of metal: How war is polluting Ukraine?s farmland and threatening food security Renewable energy, which is also one of the drivers of Ukraine?s ?green recovery,? has suffered from military activity as a result of Russian aggression. The issue of energy independence is acute today for a country which has been the victim of a particular kind of hybrid warfare: hydrocarbon blackmail. As of January 1, 2025, Ukraine no longer allows Russian gas to transit its territory. But how does Kyiv plan to solve the energy issue in the future? What role can renewable energy sources play, especially given that the war years have significantly restricted the generation of green power? Read more in the article by our regular contributor Viktoria Hubareva: a.. Prospect for renewable energy in wartime: How Ukraine plans to ensure energy independence using ?green generation? Nuclear energy is considered by many to be an alternative to renewable energy sources. However, the war has shown that this is an inherently risky direction, since it is vulnerable to use as an element of blackmail in the event of a conflict. For almost three years, Ukraine and Russia have been balancing on the brink of a nuclear catastrophe, and shelling continues to take place in the immediate vicinity of nuclear power plants. For this reason, Ukrainian environmental initiatives such as Razom We Stand are calling to prioritize the development of energy-efficient projects, rather than the creation of energy hubs around nuclear power plants or hydroelectric power plants. Read about this and other environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine in our regular review: a.. Environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine: October ? November 2024 Review Unfortunately, the consequences of the war for zoos and animal shelters, whose inmates have suffered greatly during the war, are rarely discussed. One of UWEC Work Group?s Ukrainian editors, Yuliia Spinova, has written a special feature on this issue, beginning with a look at how various zoos were forced to rescue animals that suffered from military actions during World War II. Unfortunately, Ukraine is now experiencing this challenge in the 21st century, with many of the country?s zoos having become shelters for injured animals, while other zoo animals have had to be evacuated to zoos abroad. a.. For years, researchers have been trying to figure out a way to save the tree, an iconic North American species that has been devastated by blight. But the modified trees that the foundation was experimenting with, dubbed ?Darling 58,? were defective. Their growth was stunted, they had lost their ability to fight off disease, and many of them had died. For proponents of genetic engineering (GE), the news was a major setback. To those of us who prefer less extreme measures, however, it was a reprieve. Until the early 1900s, the American chestnut tree was common across the Eastern United States and was an important component of the forest ecosystem that provided food for Indigenous peoples as well as for wildlife. Then disaster hit. The spread of an introduced blight devastated the species. This prompted dramatic but failed attempts by scientists, foresters, and government agencies to try to prevent the spread of the blight, caused by a foreign fungus called Cryphonectria parasitica, a native to East and Southeast Asia that made its way into Europe and North America in the early 1900s. These efforts included cutting down countless American chestnuts, including healthy ones that might have been able to tolerate the disease. Today, an estimated 4 million American chestnuts still exist in the forests of the eastern US. Most of these have sprouted from the stumps of the felled giants, but some are large survivors that never succumbed to the disease. Efforts are underway to build the population back, but there are two camps. On one side, anti-GMO American chestnut restoration enthusiasts are working to bring the chestnut back naturally. The other camp, which advocates for GE interventions, believes in a faster approach. And it has a lot of backing. Anne Petermann, co-founder and executive director of Global Justice Ecology Project, reports on the lessons learned from failed attempts to genetically engineer the American chestnut. Stop U.S. Toxic Waste from Poisoning Mexican Families Sign Now Every day, toxic waste from the United States crosses into Mexico, bringing illness, suffering, and death to children and families who live near processing plants. This devastating contamination comes from U.S. steel manufacturers. These manufacturers export a byproduct, hazardous steel dust, to Mexico to avoid paying for safer disposal. The deadly dust is sent to a Monterrey-area plant. There, a company called Zinc Nacional profits by extracting valuable zinc from the dust ? but in the process, its factories emit deadly pollutants into the surrounding community. Recent testing in northern Mexico revealed window sills in nearby homes that were coated with lead levels 630 times higher than U.S. safety thresholds. Lead is a neurotoxin, meaning it damages the brain and nervous system. The tests also found cadmium and arsenic at levels that cause cancer and lifelong health problems. This crisis isn't just a tragedy ? it's a glaring injustice. The United States has strict protections against this kind of pollution on its own soil, yet it allows steel companies to ship their toxic waste to Mexico, leaving families to bear the cost with their health and lives. Sign the petition to demand that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ban the dangerous export of hazardous waste, and that the U.S. and Mexican governments enforce stricter regulations and oversight of cross-border waste exports to prevent further harm. Elon Musk's SpaceX Is Threatening Endangered Species and Rare Ecosystems in Hawai'i Sign Now Hawai'i is under threat again ? this time, not from natural disasters, but from the reckless ambitions of billionaires who think their wealth entitles them to exploit these sacred lands and waters. Right now, Elon Musk's SpaceX is petitioning the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), asking it to expand the company's experimental rocket landing zone in the Pacific Ocean near Hawai'i. This includes areas dangerously close to the strict nature reserve of the Papah??naumoku??kea Marine National Monument. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Papah??naumoku??kea is an ocean sanctuary spanning over 1.5 million square kilometers. This marine monument hosts an extraordinary diversity of life, from endangered sea turtles and majestic whales to vibrant coral reefs. Beyond its ecological importance, it holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for Native Hawaiians. Allowing SpaceX to crash debris into these waters is nothing short of desecration. This is more than an environmental issue. It's a continuation of a painful pattern of exploitation. From Mark Zuckerberg's attempts to claim Native Hawaiian lands to Musk's disregard for its ecosystems, wealthy oligarchs have repeatedly treated Hawai'i as their personal playground. They fail to see the people, the culture, and the fragile beauty they threaten to destroy. Let's send a clear message: Hawai'i's oceans and ecosystems are not experimental dumping grounds. We will not allow billionaires to desecrate sacred spaces for profit and ego. Sign this petition to demand the FAA deny SpaceX's reckless request to expand its rocket landing zones. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JANUARY 24, 2025 Linger Not in Despair I did not watch the inauguration. Or read about it. Throughout Monday and Tuesday, I didn?t do much more than scan the headlines, which announced a barrage of awful, vengeful, and absurd directives coming from the second-time occupant of the White House. My instinct for self-preservation prevented me from doing more, until Wednesday evening. Then I started reading. And panic set in. Breath-choking, heart-thumping panic. ?Fully facing the reality of what?s happening is rather terrifying,? I texted my sister, who lives in Phoenix, surrounded by friends who?d voted differently from her. She messaged back that she hadn?t been able to sleep most of Sunday night, but she was finding some solace in seeing how so many people across the country were already mobilizing, offering support to each other, sharing information and resources, and gathering in solidarity. Her response reminded me, yet again, that the fight against authoritarianism is as old as humanity itself. We have fought versions of this fight many times over, the world over, throughout history, and we will likely do so in the future too. And here?s the good part: The core resources that we need to put up the resistance ? community, care, love, music, art, joy ? remain unchanged, as well. Despite knowing this, it's been hard, for me at least, to see past the fog of despair and exhaustion that has shrouded so many of us since November. But maybe that?s ok. Sometimes we do need to wallow a bit before gathering strength for the long haul ahead. But I?m also holding onto the advice that veteran activist Akaya Windwood offered on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, during a livestream event. ?We need to remember that despair is a land we move through,? she said, ?and not to build any buildings there.? Protect American Democracy from the Dangerous Rise of Oligarchs and Billionaire Tech Moguls Sign Now In a poignant and powerful farewell address, former President Joe Biden issued a grave warning to the American people: a dangerous concentration of power is taking root in the United States. He pointed to the tech moguls like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, who have amassed unprecedented wealth and influence. Oligarchs' power increasingly reaches into every corner of our lives ? from the information we consume on social media to the way businesses operate and, alarmingly, how political decisions are made. The consequences of allowing this unchecked power to grow are dire. Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. In Monterrey, families are living in the shadow of a factory that emits a horrifying "toxic cocktail" of pollution ? a cocktail that includes lead, arsenic, cadmium, and other contaminants. Ending Birthright Citizenship Would Strip Children of Their Rights and Opportunities. This Is Unconstitutional and Un-American. Sign Now Vladimir, On day one of his second presidency, Donald Trump wasted no time issuing multiple executive orders to trample on so much of what makes the United States great. One of the most devastating moves was his attempt to end birthright citizenship ? a Constitutional Amendment that guarantees citizenship to all children born in the United States. Birthright citizenship has been around for over 150 years, ushering in generations of children, giving them a chance to live life as an United States citizen. Birthright citizenship means children born here have all the same rights as their peers ? the right to an education, the right to healthcare, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Stripping birthright citizenship from any child that is born in the United States is not only encouraging further division in our country, but it is a cruel refusal to care for every child equally. Ending birthright citizenship now would be targeting already vulnerable communities that are terrified of what Trump, a known opponent of compassionate and effective immigration policies, will do in the coming months. Trump has already promised mass deportations and made schools the possible targets of immigration raids. Luckily, ending birthright citizenship will not be as easy as Trump would like: the executive order has already been blocked by a federal judge as unconstitutional, and the legal battle will likely be long and arduous for Trump. Congress does have the power to pass a law or a new Constitutional Amendment upholding Trump's desired change, which is why we must implore them to stand strong. We demand that Congress protect the children and families that call this country home. Sign the petition demanding Congress do everything in its power to keep birthright citizenship intact! Thank you, Sophie Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Birthright citizenship is one of the things that makes the United States a strong, compassionate, and diverse country. Don't let Trump strip this right from children.
