                        Donald Trump's latest scheme is to try and fully abolish the Department of Education. This is not only reckless and harmful — it's also illegal. The Department of Education (DOE) was created by Congress, and only Congress has the power to eliminate it.

                        Education is the foundation of democracy, and we must defend it at all costs. Yet, unwilling to let the law stand in his way, Trump is preparing an executive order anyway to gut the department from within. This will undermine its essential functions and leave students, teachers, and families to bear the consequences.

                        The DOE exists to ensure that every student in the U.S. has access to quality education, regardless of their background or location. It provides essential education funding for schools, protects students with disabilities, and ensures schools are a source of egalitarian learning in order to provide all children in the U.S. with opportunities for their futures. It also oversees federal student loans, which millions of Americans rely on to afford higher education.

                        Trump and his allies are already working to dismantle the department by forcing employees out and installing operatives from Elon Musk's so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency' (DOGE) to slash funding and disrupt operations.

                        This blatant overreach is not just an attack on public education — it's an attack on the rule of law. Congress must hold the line and refuse to allow Trump to destroy the Department of Education. His executive order cannot lawfully dismantle the agency, but it can weaken it to the point of dysfunction.
