News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JANUARY 31, 2025 A Landscape of Lies I GREW UP IN a landscape of lies. As a child, I was told that every lake in North Dakota freezes. This isn?t true. One lake ? Nelson Lake, my home lake ? doesn?t freeze. In the 1960s, when generational coal plants were first built in south-central North Dakota, the Square Butte Creek in Oliver County, a small, squiggly stream that eventually empties into the wide, muddy Missouri River, was dammed, and Nelson Lake was created to help with fossil fuel extraction. In childhood, I roamed the rocky shores of Nelson Lake with worms and bobbers to catch fish with my Grandpa Hatzenbihler. I spent hour after hour in the shadow of the Milton R. Young Power Plant, its blocky structure pierced with two enormous cigarette-colored smokestacks. The power plant was a type of postmodern-volcano-skyscraper that framed my life. The plant was always within view. On nighttime trips back into coal country from Bismarck, where my family would buy groceries, shop for clothing, or go out to eat at Fiesta Villa, The Ground Round, or The Walrus, I could clock how far we were from home by where we were in relationship to the glowing and blinking lights of Minnkota Power. The lights colored low-laying clouds amber. The power plant was an eerie Polaris that allowed me to navigate my way toward home in the city of Center, North Dakota? Though we never said it at the time, it?s clear to me now that I grew up in a company town. Coal colored my childhood, sponsored baseball tournaments, fueled pancake breakfast fundraisers, gave me food, clothing, and shelter. It was the resource that gave eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota electricity, and it gave those of us that pulled it from the ground in south-central North Dakota money, a type of financial security in a region where, previously, most men ranched or farmed. North Dakota is home to the world?s largest known deposit of lignite coal, estimated to last nearly eight hundred years with current consumption rates. But with increasing calls to leave fossil fuel development in the past, my home power plant is now the world test site for a new fossil fuel technology: carbon capture and storage. Journalist and author Taylor Brorby writes about the lies the community he grew up in told itself to make life next to a power plant bearable. He worries the arrival of a new fossil fuel technology could continue to perpetuate those myths. READ MORE Photo by Illustration by Henrike Lendowski / IllustrationZone. This Congressman suggested kids work to eat. Message-ID: <0FE81C76F75A4FC2B1852EB4A98A82C9@lewpostnew> This is utterly shameful. This Republican Congressman Wants Hungry Kids of Struggling Families to Get a Job Instead of a Meal at School Sign Now Just a week into his second term as president, Donald Trump's administration tried to snatch away trillions of federal dollars from their rightful recipients. Money for healthcare, medical research, housing, child care, food for the hungry, and even disaster relief efforts ? Trump's freeze on federal aid tried to stop it all. In an interview on CNN, Republican Congressman Rich McCormick of Georgia had the audacity to not only defend the dangerous move, but to also suggest the most morbid idea for the children who would go hungry without the school lunches provided by federal aid. "You're telling me that kids who stay at home instead of going to work at Burger King, McDonald's, during the summer, should stay at home and get their free lunch instead of going to work? I think we need to have a top-down review." McCormick's idea to make hungry children work for food is neither backed by compassion nor science. We know from research that hungry kids do worse in school; they struggle to pay attention, retain information, and solve problems. Why, then, would we assume they would be happy and successful if, on top of all of that, they had to start working an adult job? Children should be able to focus on their childhood, not on working so that they don't go hungry. While the federal aid freeze has been blocked, we cannot let up the pressure even for a moment. Trump and his followers like McCormick will continue to try to test their limits of power and attack the most vulnerable of our society, but this block proves that when we fight back, we win. Sign the petition for all of the hungry children who need our support under this administration, and tell Trump and his supporters to stay away from their funding! News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | FEBRUARY 7, 2025 Stand Up, Dig In Monday morning, just as I was getting settled into the work week, one email in particular caught my eye. It was a press release from the Environmental Protect Agency, with an unmistakably Trumpish subject line: ?What They Are Saying: EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to Unleash American Greatness as Head of EPA.? I took the bait and clicked, only to find more than 40 quotes from Republican lawmakers and industry insiders singing the praises of the newly confirmed Zeldin. The email sent me down a rabbit hole. I?d been avoiding news of the EPA?s rapid transformation as much as one can in this line of work, but no longer. I decided to dig in ? and there was, of course, a lot to dig into. Since Trump took office a month ago, all members of the EPA?s clean air and science advisory boards have been dismissed. Its diversity, equity, and inclusion staff have been placed on administrative leave. Former Dupont executives and industry lobbyists have been appointed to leadership positions within the agency?s chemical oversight division. Earlier this week, more than 1,100 employees received notice that they could be immediately terminated. On Wednesday, news broke that Trump was expected to close the agency?s Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights, which supports communities particularly vulnerable to pollution, and just yesterday 168 of the office?s employees were put on leave. The Trump administration has placed a partial gag order on public communications, removed prominent online references to climate change, and done away with the agency?s online environmental justice mapping tool, too. There?s little doubt that these changes, and the inevitable regulatory rollbacks that are to follow, will do much harm to our land, our health, and our communities. This is all happening in addition to the countless other blows the administration is dealing to communities around the world through its policies on immigration, transgender rights, foreign aid, and more. It?s bleak, and it?s hard to find a silver lining. Still, part of me feels relieved after wading through the news. I?ve managed, finally, to push past avoidance. Now that I?ve begun processing the situation, I feel energized by the emerging resistance, including the lawsuits that have already started flowing, the community organizing that?s taking place, and our own work here at the Journal, reporting on people offering a vision for a better world. Those are stories I can dig into. Zoe Loftus-Farren Managing Editor, Earth Island Journal Photo by Michaela ??m?kov? We need more research to understand and combat it. Air Pollution Is Linked to Deadly New Pattern of Lung Cancer, Even in People Who Never Smoked Sign Now Lung cancer has long been associated with smoking. But now, shocking new research is revealing a terrifying trend: more and more non-smokers are being diagnosed with this deadly disease. Experts warn that air pollution could be a major culprit, yet we still lack the full picture. We desperately, urgently need more research. Lung cancer is already the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, and it's only getting worse. Studies show that lung cancer in people who have never smoked is now the fifth highest cause of cancer-related deaths. In 2022 alone, a staggering 200,000 cases of one particularly aggressive form of lung cancer ? adenocarcinoma ? were directly linked to air pollution. Scientists fear this number will continue to rise as pollution worsens across the globe. Many of these individuals never had a choice. They never picked up a cigarette. They never engaged in any known risky behavior. And yet, they are still fighting for their lives anyway. Non-smokers who develop this disease may not even know they are at risk. As a result, they are diagnosed too late ? when survival chances are grimmer. View this email in your browser Brussels, 13 February 2025 10 key recommendations in the new WE Position Paper on the EU Water Resilience Strategy Water Europe releases its new position paper on the EU Water Resilience Strategy: A step towards a Water-Smart Society. Water Europe?s position paper outlines 10 key recommendations to overcome cross-sectoral barriers and leverage benefits for the whole society. For the first time, the European Commission is prioritizing water at the highest level, recognizing its role in securing economic resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness. However, fragmented governance and underinvestment threaten progress. Advanced water-smart technologies could save ?3 billion annually and create 13,000 jobs, but urgent investment, estimated at least at ?255 billion, is needed to ensure compliance with the EU legislation and efficiency. Water cannot be an adjustment factor in the programme of the new Commission, jeopardising competitiveness and environmental protection. A holistic Water Resilience Strategy (WRS) paired with a dedicated Water Fund is vital for Europe?s competitiveness, sustainability, and ecological future. ?Check out our 10 recommendations ?Water is the foundation of Europe?s economy, environment, and future. We need coordinated action, targeted investments, and an integrated governance framework to deliver tangible results.? said Durk Krol, Executive Director at Water Europe. "Innovation in monitoring structural conditions through robotics and sensors, enhanced by AI, while also focusing on transparency, accountability, and fairness in algorithms and data handling will be required, as well as protecting water infrastructure against cyber, physical, and hybrid threats. Manage, operate and allocate water could benefit from digitalisation." stressed out Rita Ugarelli, WE Board Member and Chief Researcher Scientist at SINTEF. We urge the EU Commission to take decisive action to address water risks and harness the opportunities within each of its priorities, unifying these efforts through a comprehensive Water Resilience Strategy along with a substantial Water fund. With the Water Resilience Strategy on the horizon, the opportunity to build a Water-Smart Europe is within reach. This will hurt students. Message-ID: <8506080F794147D58081614EB95505A6@lewpostnew> We must defend education from Trump's attack. Trump Wants to Abolish the Department of Education. Congress Must Stop Him! Sign Now Donald Trump's latest scheme is to try and fully abolish the Department of Education. This is not only reckless and harmful ? it's also illegal. The Department of Education (DOE) was created by Congress, and only Congress has the power to eliminate it. Education is the foundation of democracy, and we must defend it at all costs. Yet, unwilling to let the law stand in his way, Trump is preparing an executive order anyway to gut the department from within. This will undermine its essential functions and leave students, teachers, and families to bear the consequences. The DOE exists to ensure that every student in the U.S. has access to quality education, regardless of their background or location. It provides essential education funding for schools, protects students with disabilities, and ensures schools are a source of egalitarian learning in order to provide all children in the U.S. with opportunities for their futures. It also oversees federal student loans, which millions of Americans rely on to afford higher education. Trump and his allies are already working to dismantle the department by forcing employees out and installing operatives from Elon Musk's so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency' (DOGE) to slash funding and disrupt operations. This blatant overreach is not just an attack on public education ? it's an attack on the rule of law. Congress must hold the line and refuse to allow Trump to destroy the Department of Education. His executive order cannot lawfully dismantle the agency, but it can weaken it to the point of dysfunction. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | FEBRUARY 14, 2025 Strange Fish THE LAST TIME Captain Richard Rutland attempted to fish for snook, he had to travel nearly 11 hours from Mobile, Alabama, to the tropical waters of Everglades National Park, in south Florida. That was one of the nearest places he could hope to find such a fish, known for fighting hard on the hook. Lately, though, it?s looking like Rutland can stay closer to home: snook and other warm-water fish are finding their way north, and showing up on social media along the way. ?We caught a PERMIT while fishing for sheepshead with nightcrawlers,? a Mississippi angler recently posted on Facebook. ?We thought I had caught a state record, not because it was huge but because this fish is so rare for MS waters.? ?To say I was SHOCKED today would be an understatement,? another fisherman recently posted. ?Not only did we catch double digit pompano numbers but we managed to land this Alabama bonefish!? People are swapping stories and sharing photos of new fish, sometimes asking for help identifying fish they?ve never seen before. And this has researchers intrigued. Tropical fish like snook, bonefish, and permit have been showing up more often in states like Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, shattering previous size records and sometimes establishing completely new ones? The recent arrival of new species, due to the ?tropicalization? of the waters, has researchers looking into what impact they will have on native plants and animals. Journalist Jason Ruffin writes about how ?tropicalization? is upending Gulf Coast ecosystems that millions of people rely on. Message-ID: <1FF8958829A549A992C5BC4DFCD09296@evol.sp.ru> The UK must prioritize saving its bees. The UK Must Protect Bees and Ants In Order to Protect Food Security and Ecosystems From Collapse Sign Now The UK has set a list of so-called "goals" for itself when it comes to conservation. But these "goals" are so laughably minimal, they would actually allow all of the bees, ants, moths, and other vital insects to go extinct in the country. Insects are important to our ecosystems for a wide variety of reasons. One of the most significant roles they play is in pollinating plants ? which, in turn, keeps the food chain alive for the rest of all living beings. On top of that, they help maintain soil health, contribute to decomposition and recirculating vital nutrients, and act as pest-controls. Yet already, bees, ants, and other insects have been facing a devastating population loss in the UK. This poses a gigantic threat to food security in that country and beyond. The British government must immediately create and implement a more robust environmental conservation plan that prioritizes protecting bees, ants, and other important insects. The health of the ecosystem and our planet depends upon it! Sign the petition! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Sign the petition to ask for urgent research into the direct link between air pollution and lung cancer in non-smokers and strong international policies to reduce air pollution and protect public health! Trump Wants to Dismantle Clean Energy. We Can't Let Him. Sign Now This time, In a total villain move, Donald Trump has frozen all offshore wind projects. And he did it at two donors' request. This reckless and corrupt decision threatens the nation's climate goals, puts thousands of clean energy jobs at risk, and forces states to rely on polluting fossil fuels to meet their energy needs. The consequences of Trump's decision are dire. Climate change continues to worsen every year, and humans are feeling the intensifying effects through wildfires, hurricanes, drought, heat waves, and more. We absolutely must prioritize switching to sustainable energy sources as fast as possible. But instead, Trump wants us to move backwards, further into the arms of the oil and gas industries, further committing us to their dirty and polluting consequences. States like New York and New Jersey had set ambitious plans to transition to renewable energy, relying on offshore wind to meet their targets. New York alone planned to generate 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind power by 2035 ? enough to power millions of homes with clean energy. Fully implementing offshore wind projects along the East Coast would cut carbon emissions by 50 million tons annually. This is the equivalent of shutting down 131 gas-fired power plants. But two of Trump's wealthy donors, both with interests in fossil fuels, didn't want offshore wind farms near their properties. Congress must act immediately to override this reckless decision and pass legislation requiring offshore wind expansion. Sign this petition to demand that Congress take action to protect offshore wind energy and secure a cleaner, more sustainable future! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | FEBRUARY 21, 2025 Find Some Quiet Awesome For the past few weeks, I?ve been on a road trip with an Italian friend, and over the past weekend, we found ourselves on the coast of Oregon. In California, we?d had some luck foraging for coastal greens, Pismo clams, and mussels, and we wanted to keep trying. So we found a sporting goods store in Brookings, Oregon, to buy a fishing license. There, at a gun counter (try explaining that to a European), a good-natured, mustachioed clerk informed us that we wouldn?t need one: twice a year, Oregon has a ?free fishing? weekend, where no license is required. The next day, we drove up a winding road following the Rogue River, which meandered out of the misty woods, grey and swollen. On the stony banks, I found a fisherman, who had a long rod, set with a large bell, propped up on the bank. When I told him I had no idea how to fish this kind of water, he jumped to the task of educating me. Here, he said, they were fishing for winter steelhead, massive rainbow trout that live part of their lives in the ocean. The fishing tackle included a heavy weight and a floating, spinning lure, which you cast out and let sit. I was in luck, the man said, because he had some extra tackle he would happily give me. He dug around in the back of the jeep and produced everything I would need to fish here (minus the rod and reel, which I actually have, stashed away in the camper van). The man drove off, and I set up the tackle as he?d shown me, and cast out into the river. I unfolded a camp chair and sat down, and for the next hour, I watched the water flow by. A red-headed merganser passed, riding the current, while a bald eagle circled overhead, much to the delight of my friend, who sat next to me with a pair of binoculars. Eventually two Canada geese arrived, landing on the river with what would have been grace if not for all the honking. No steelhead showed up, which is good, because I?m not a true angler, and the prospect of landing a 24-inch fish had me worried. Still, for that hour, I thought of nothing but the river. No news, no noise, no sense of impending doom ? just the quietude of a world I?d almost forgotten. I snapped a picture and sent it to my dad, who is an avid fisherman. I included a brief note: ?Fishing for winter steelhead on the Rouge River,? to which he replied, ?That?s so awesome!? And it was. So here?s a note to say, don?t forget to find something awesome this weekend. The noisy world can wait. Yet, despite this economic strain, the ultra-wealthy continue to amass enormous fortunes. In fact, wealth inequality in the United States is out of control, with the top 1% of households holding nearly 31% of all wealth while the bottom 50% hold just 2.6%. Now, a new report from Oxfam reveals that within the next decade, five people are expected to become trillionaires. Four of them are in the U.S. ? Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Larry Ellison ? and their wealth is projected to exceed an unfathomable amount. Here's a gut-wrenching metaphor to put a trillion dollars into perspective: 1 million seconds is about 11 days. 1 billion seconds is about 31 years. 1 trillion seconds is over 31,688 years. This kind of wealth is shameful, especially when so many Americans struggle to meet basic needs. It also means increasing power in the hands of a few, affecting everything from business to politics. The Carcasses of More Than 1,100 Recently Endangered Turtles Washed Up On Southern India Beaches Sign Now Olive ridley sea turtles were, for a long time, endangered. Now, upwards of 1,100 of the precious animals have washed up ? dead ? on beaches in southern India. For so many turtles to wash up dead is astounding and heartbreaking. Examinations have discovered that the turtles most likely died as a result of drowning and suffocation, judging from their bulging eyes and lesions in their lungs. No one knows exactly why more than 1,000 sea turtles would drown, but many experts worry that the culprits could be fishing boats. Fishing nets are a common way for marine wildlife to wind up trapped and tangled, unable to reach the surface of the water in order to breathe. Even though local laws exist to protect sea turtles and other wildlife from fishing nets, apparently many commercial fishing operations ignore the laws. In fact, after news of the turtles' deaths went public, the local government in Tamil Nadu discovered a full 24 illegal trawler boats that were in the nearby waters. No generation has faced the level of pollution we are facing, but alternatives to plastic exist, and it's time to push the industry in the right direction. Sign the petition to urge these grocery store chains to take action and commit to zero-plastic packaging! Thank you, Sophie Care2 Petitions Team P.S. A new study shows the amount of microplastics in human brains doubled in under a decade. Sign to take action against plastic pollution! They also seem to be well financed, and they are just starting to flood the mediaspace with images, slogans, books, and videoclips. If they keep at that, they are going to steamroll half a century of climate research and turn it to pulp to be recycled to toilet paper. And what is the ?scientific community? doing? Nothing they are sleeping sound. https://livingearth.substack.com/p/the-co2-is-food-for-plants-continues -- ******************************* Ugo Bardi Gaia Knows Best livingearth.substack.com-- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Living Earth" group. -- ?? ???????? ??? ?????????, ????????? ????????? ?? ??????
