This Vermont Law Holds Big Oil Accountable for Climate Disaster. Trump's DOJ Wants to Kill It. Sign Now In 2024, Vermont passed an essential piece of legislation aimed at holding major polluters accountable for climate change. This policy, known as the Climate Superfund Act, requires companies to pay for their carbon emissions. This is an important step towards averting the worst-case-scenario for global warming. Now, in a time when this type of policy should be used across the country, Trump's Department of Justice wants to kill it. But we won't let him. Sign the petition to tell the Department of Justice to leave the Climate Superfund Act untouched, and demand other states enact similar policies! The Trump Administration is claiming the policy is unlawful, and asking a federal court in Burlington to declare the Superfund Act unconstitutional and unenforceable. Meanwhile, wildfires are destroying our forests and making the air toxic to breathe, floods are ravaging homes and businesses, and drought is forcing hundreds of thousands of people to become climate refugees. It doesn't have to be this way. The DoJ must drop this asinine case against the Climate Superfund Act, and more states must stand in solidarity with Vermont and pass similar legislation! As a nonprofit newsroom, reader contributions help us do the hard work of finding and reporting stories ? and making those stories available to everyone, without a paywall. Yes! I'll support the Green Journalism Fund. Why doesn?t Earth Island Journal have a paywall? Because we believe access to high-quality information is key to fighting the climate crisis and protecting our shared planet. We don?t believe in hiding away well-sourced, deeply reported journalism in a place where only a privileged few can access it. That doesn?t serve the public good. People deserve to know who pollutes their waterways, who spews toxic particles into their air, and who endangers local wildlife. People deserve the truth and access to reliable information. Unfortunately, social media and our public airwaves are flooded with free clickbait and misinformation, often written by PR professionals and, increasingly, AI. When corporate spin crowds out factual, evidence-based information, people lose trust in our institutions and in each other. Turning the news into a luxury product that can only be accessed behind paywalls hasn?t protected journalism jobs either. This year, layoffs once again hit big names like the Los Angeles Times, CNN, and PBS. Cuts also came for small but impactful newsrooms like Teen Vogue. Make your gift to the Green Journalism Fund. Thanks to your donations, Earth Island Journal produces investigative journalism, commentary, and inspiring stories of grassroots movements without being influenced by big corporations. Some days it feels like a miracle that our small newsroom has been covering grassroots environmental movements for more than 40 years. We have managed to keep at it because of generous donations from readers like you. The impact of your gift is real. Thank you for your support. Monsoon season is often known for heavy downpours and powerful storms that can cause landslides and flooding. These institutions will be meeting in trilogue discussions this week, making our collective message timely. We encourage you to share the statement as widely as possible through your usual communication channels. This will help ensure that decision-makers understand the broad and united support for resolving the current uncertainty and delivering an effective and ambitious EUDR. We have included some optional template posts you may use or adapt for social media below - please feel free to tailor and adapt these messages as needed. We have also attached our social media pack. Thank you for lending your voice to this important message and for helping to maximise its impact. Kind regards, Sarah // LinkedIn We join over 100 businesses, investors & civil society voices with one message: implement the EU Deforestation Regulation now. Despite decades of voluntary pledges, global deforestation is still accelerating. 2024 saw some of the highest tropical forest-loss on record. Forest destruction drives biodiversity loss, worsens climate change, threatens the existence of Indigenous and local communities, and creates systemic risks for supply chains and economies. The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a groundbreaking law - the first in the world to turn voluntary commitments into legal obligations. But its future is under threat. Proposals to delay and weaken the law risk wasting years of work and millions invested by businesses preparing for compliance. Today we call on the European Commission to regain control of the legislative process and commit unequivocally to implementing the EUDR without further delays or dilution. Every second of delay has a price for forests, for people, and for the planet. ? A new deal that would reduce tariffs to zero includes a provision for the NHS to buy US-manufactured drugs at a 25% markup by 2035. That could cost UK taxpayers an extra ?3 billion annually. The deal was criticized in Britain, with Liberal Democrats health spokesperson Helen Morgan labeling it ?a shakedown? that would have ramifications on the country?s economy and preparedness. ?Trump demanded these pay rises to put Americans first and our government rolled over,? News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | DECEMBER 5,2025 Growing Pains Early in November, The New York Times published a hit piece on the Sierra Club that highlighted the environmental group?s internal struggles as it sought to embrace social justice. By broadening its agenda to include progressive causes like racial and economic justice, gender equity, and upholding democracy, the club has suffered heavy losses in revenue and supporters, the report alleged. While the article centered one venerable green group, the general takeaway seemed to be that the environmental movement would be more effective if it stuck to its lane ? that is, if it focused solely on protecting wilderness, wildlife, and the climate. This framing is absurdly anachronistic, damaging, and, honestly, lazy. One doesn?t have to look farther than the features in our Winter 2026 print issue, which will hit newsstands soon, to see why. Need an example of how gender equity can intersect with wildlife conservation? Read ?Her Terrain,? which shows how employing Maasai women as wildlife rangers helps them break free of patriarchal traditions like polygamy and child marriage while also protecting iconic animals. Or read ?Changing the Equation? to learn about Dena Montague?s work to generate energy independence in Ghana while also building community and fostering economic justice. And if it isn?t clear that forest conservation requires stable governments and full bellies, read ?The Last Stand,? which details how the civil war in Syria has led to widespread logging by both armed militias and citizens struggling to survive. Or peruse ?Up In Smoke,? which shows the reverse ? that in a (still) functioning democracy, fierce public engagement can help protect forests. Outside these pages, here in the United States, we are witnessing firsthand how environmental advocacy becomes more difficult when our civic rights are undermined. Since Donald Trump took office in January 2025, his administration has taken or proposed more than 350 anti-environmental actions. Yet despite this assault, recent polls indicate that climate and environmental issues have fallen farther down the list of voter concerns, below things like the economy, government corruption, immigrant rights, and the state of our democracy. That?s no surprise. It can be hard to summon outrage about yet another hit to the Endangered Species Act or the latest move to open up our coastal waters to oil and gas drilling when armed immigration enforcement agents are grabbing our neighbors off the streets, essential federal services like food stamps (which help nearly 42 million Americans put food on the table) are being disrupted, and the specter of civil unrest looms large. What is surprising, and frustrating, is the willful blindness of those who view the challenges that the environmental movement faces as failures rather than the inevitable growing pains of trying to move beyond an exclusionary past. It?s way past time for those blinders to come off. In this issue, you will find: ?An on-the-ground report from France?s Aude region, where residents are grappling with the aftermath of a devastating summer wildfire, assessing the toll on local farms and vineyards, and rethinking farming practices for the future. ? A deep dive into the westward expansion of the American wood pellet industry and the grassroots efforts to stop it from moving into California, Oregon, and Washington. ? A feature from southern Syria, where land defenders are protecting one of the region?s last native oak groves from armed profiteers, even as the area comes under threat from ongoing conflict in the Middle East. ? A photo essay from Kenya, where members of the country?s first all-female park ranger team are leaning into their Maasai heritage and redefining what conservation means for wildlife, local communities, and themselves. ? A thought-provoking essay that explores the nocturnal world, the night sky, and what happens to our sense of self in the dark. Plus: ?A conversation with rural organizer and former Brower Youth Award winner Chloe Maxmin about how climate justice shows up in her organizing, and why it?s so important for progressives to pay attention to rural voters. ? A look into the work of renowned photographer Joel Sartore, who aims to document every last species in the world?s zoos and wildlife sanctuaries before they disappear. Delhi residents beg for clean air Message-ID: Delhi families are suffocating while leaders fail to act. "Breathing Is Killing Us!" Stand With the People of Delhi Demanding Local Officials Save Their Polluted City Sign Now Delhi's winter "pollution season" has become a yearly nightmare. A toxic, suffocating cloud settles over the city, forcing people to shut themselves indoors with air purifiers or flee entirely. For millions of residents who can't escape, simply breathing has become dangerous. At a recent protest to demand action, one resident called Delhi "a death trap," while another held a sign that read: "BREATHING IS KILLING US!" And yet, local leaders have done far too little to address this crisis. Every winter, Delhi's air quality index skyrockets to more than one hundred times the safe limit. One doctor put it plainly: the air is "literally killing our kids." But this catastrophe is solvable. Car emissions, coal plants, farm burns, and waste-burning facilities are all sources we know how to clean up or replace. What's missing is political will. Delhi's residents are begging for action, and it's time for leaders to listen. Every year, hundreds of millions of tiny, day-old male chicks are killed in Europe simply because they will never lay eggs. Many are shredded alive. Others are gassed. Their entire lives ? all 24 hours of them ? reduced to an industry ?cost.? It doesn?t have to be this way. And right now, we have a rare chance to change the law and save millions of lives. The European Commission has opened a public consultation on its on-farm animal welfare legislation, including whether to finally ban this brutal practice ? but it closes December 12. We urgently need your help to flood this consultation with thousands and thousands of our voices and make our calls for a ban impossible to ignore. If enough of us chip in, we can unleash a wave of hard-hitting ads that expose the reality of chick shredding and drive people to the public consultation. What happens in the next 11 days will determine the fate of billions of animals for years to come. Can you help us end animal cruelty and save newborn chicks from instant death? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) warned that killing day-old chicks using high-speed grinders isn?t a quick and painless death. Their scientific review found that slow blade rotation, overloaded machines, or rollers set too wide can leave chicks conscious during the process, exposing them to intense suffering, pain, distress, and fear. Germany and France have already banned chick culling. But across the rest of Europe, the practice continues at an industrial scale. This consultation could be the turning point, but first we need resources ? fast. If enough of us chip in today, we can: a.. Mobilise massive public input to flood the consultation with calls for a full EU-wide ban. a.. Launch an ?End Chick Shredding? media drive, with powerful ads exposing the cruelty the industry hides. a.. Keep up high-impact lobbying after the consultation closes to ensure the final legislation includes a ban. We know how to win this. When people see what?s really happening ? when decision-makers feel the public?s outrage ? the tide turns. Germany and France didn?t act spontaneously. They acted because people refused to look away. Now it?s Europe?s turn, but we don?t have much time. Can you rush a donation to help us end animal cruelty and save newborn chicks from instant death? Sweden's New Sustainable, Nutritious, Free School Meals Program Should Expand to Other Countries, Too! Sign Now Vladimir, Schoolchildren in Sweden are enjoying a trial program in which their meals will not only be free ? but also nutritious, delicious, and sustainable. That seems remarkable compared with what many other students in countries like the U.S. eat. But it should be the norm and the obvious baseline! Meals in Swedish schools have already been free for all children since 1997, and in 2011 the government mandated that these meals should also be healthy and properly nutritious. Now, however, these meals are also helping to tackle the ongoing problem of food-waste and sustainability! The program works like this: local grocery stores donate excess fresh fruits and vegetables instead of throwing them away. School staff turn these donations into robust meals and snacks for students. Some of the options even include overnight oats and juice shots from lemons, mint, ginger, and apples. Compare this with an average American school lunch of pizza, fries, chicken nuggets, spaghetti, and burgers. It's easy to see the impact this has on children. Decades of research have shown the importance of nutrition for fostering better childhood development. It has been shown to improve academic performance, cognitive development, emotional regulation, energy and engagement, memory, and concentration. Why wouldn't we want to set our children up for success? After all, they're the future of the world! Sign the petition to urge leaders in other countries, including the USA, the UK, and the larger European Union to implement similar programs for their schools! Sign the petition Europe?s wild bees are in a death spiral ? and the EU is about to make it much worse. The European Commission is proposing changes that would allow unlimited approvals for ALL pesticides ? with no mandatory safety reviews and no requirement to consider new scientific evidence on the harmful impacts of the chemicals in these products. If this passes, toxic chemicals could stay in the market forever!! Unless we stop it. Bayer and industry lobbyists are working hard behind closed doors to rush this through before the public catches on. Our best chance is to overwhelm the Commission with thousands and thousands of our voices demanding they protect bees, nature, and people ? NOT Bayer?s profits. Tell the EU Commission: NO unlimited pesticide approvals! Wild bees pollinate a third of our crops. Without them, we would lose apples, tomatoes, and countless other foods we rely on. Their survival is our survival. And pesticides are decimating whole populations of them. In the last decade, the number of wild bee species at risk of extinction has more than doubled. The Commission?s proposed changes would accelerate their deaths and cause untold harm to people for generations to come. They would allow open-ended approvals, eliminate mandatory review of new scientific evidence, and double the time banned pesticides can stay in the market after they?re ruled too dangerous for use. This would be the biggest rollback on pesticide protections the EU has ever seen. It?s critical we act now ? while we can still influence what happens next. Together, we?ve won many bans on dangerous pesticides and forced some of the world?s biggest companies to pull their products from the market. Experts also cite ageing infrastructure and the priority filling of the Rogun Reservoir. The government warns that restrictions may intensify as winter progresses. Uzbekistan Joins the Aarhus Convention Uzbekistan was formally accepted as a Party to the Aarhus Convention, following its accession earlier this year. The country is creating Aarhus Centres and updating environmental legislation, but NGOs report ongoing compliance gaps in projects financed by international banks and call for broader public participation. Kyrgyzstan Urges Households to Save Electricity Kyrgyzstan is consuming more electricity than it can produce, a deficit worsened by low water levels across Central Asian reservoirs. The country relies heavily on imports, increasing system vulnerability. The Ministry of Energy is asking citizens to reduce consumption during peak hours. Ukraine?s New Climate Commitments Prioritize Children and Youth UNICEF welcomed Ukraine?s updated NDC, which for the first time classifies children and youth as vulnerable groups and guarantees their role in shaping climate policy. The plan aims to cut emissions by more than 65% by 2035 and strengthens climate-resilient water supply for schools, hospitals, and communities. Armenia Falls Drastically Behind Forest Restoration Goals A new investigation shows Armenia has completed only about 2% of its pledged reforestation: just 1,000 hectares have been planted out of the 50,000 hectares promised by 2030. The shortfall threatens national commitments under the Paris Agreement, including plans to raise forest cover to 13% by 2030 and double it by 2050. Moldova Signs Convention on Environmental Protection Through Criminal Law Moldova has signed the new European treaty enabling prosecution of environmental crimes, including transboundary ones. The Convention addresses the ?triple planetary crisis? of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, and will enter into force once ten countries ratify it. Chernobyl Sarcophagus No Longer Provides Key Protection The IAEA reports that the protective structure at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant has lost its core containment functions after a drone strike in February 2025. The attack caused a fire and compromised the structure?s ability to retain radioactive materials and shield the site from external factors. Baku Launches Platform for Asian Universities on Climate A new initiative under the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) will unite universities from 42 Asian countries. The network will focus on green energy, energy transition, and climate research. Russia: Ecologists Warn Against New Logging Law Near Lake Baikal A parliamentary committee has approved a bill allowing clear-cutting in the Baikal region. Scientists and environmental groups warn that the move could devastate local ecosystems, accelerate erosion, and fuel the spread of Spirogyra algae, which already threatens the lake. Nature Retracts Climate Study Over Uzbekistan Data Error Nature has withdrawn a widely cited study on global economic impacts after discovering inaccurate data for Uzbekistan from the 1990s. Revised estimates slightly reduce projected global income losses by 2050 ? from 19% to 17% ? but confirm that damage will be severe, especially for low-income countries. UNIDO: Cities Emerging as Key Drivers of Industrial Decarbonization UNIDO?s new report highlights that the most carbon-intensive sectors ? construction, materials production, transport, and logistics ? are concentrated in cities. With rising temperatures, water scarcity, and growing populations, the agency urges governments to empower cities through financing, green procurement, and local innovation. Europe Is Rapidly Losing Freshwater Satellite data from 2002?2024 show significant declines in freshwater reserves across Southern and Central Europe. Researchers link the trend to the accelerating climate crisis, with the continent?s south becoming drier while the north becomes wetter. Deadly Storms and Floods Kill Over 1,000 in Southeast Asia Tropical cyclones have brought extreme rainfall and widespread flooding to Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the Philippines. The World Meteorological Organization warns that warmer air holds more moisture, intensifying such disasters. -------------------------------------------------- Opportunities Microgrants for Ecosystem Restoration Applications are open for 10 microgrants of USD 1,000 from the Youth Task Force, supported by UNEP and FAO. Projects can focus on restoring forests, land, freshwater and coastal ecosystems, mountain areas, or urban green spaces. Deadline: 31 December. Free Facilitation Course for Environmental Activists A free introductory online course on facilitation is open for environmental groups and activists. The program covers group dynamics, practical tools, and moderation skills. Deadline: 14 December; course begins 16 December. -------------------------------------------------- Would you like to reach out to us? This magical place was just hammered by a cyclone -- our partners urgently need extra help to recover and get back to work. With your support, we could rush a contribution to Indonesia to help protect one of the most irreplaceable ecosystems on the planet. Can you chip in to defend our natural world when it's most needed? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount -------------------------------------------------------------------- It sounds like a fairy tale, but there?s a place on Earth where tigers, elephants, rhinos and orangutans coexist in the wild. And this week we can help buy a piece of their forest home to protect it...forever?AGAIN! The Leuser Ecosystem of Indonesia has been called one of the most irreplaceable ecosystems on the planet. But poaching, plans for infrastructure projects like hydroelectric dams, and mass deforestation are threatening to destroy it. That?s why our partner Forum Konservasi Leuser (FKL) wants to purchase and protect massive amounts of this forest...and give these critically endangered species a fighting chance to survive. Twice we?ve helped them buy huge swathes of land, but they?re now looking to expand the area we helped them buy already by almost 50x!! If enough of us chip in, FKL could quickly start securing the next tracts of land and get started on their work protecting it. Can you help save this irreplaceable piece of our planet (again!)? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Our community has done so much work over the years to protect orangutans from pillaging, and this has been a huge part of it -- actually helping to buy the land and pay for patrols to stop deforestation and poaching. That happens through our local partner, Forum Konservasi Leuser. After securing the land, FKL educates local communities in sustainable resource use, and recruits community members for jobs to protect the forest. We already helped them more than double their protected area. Now we can help them do even more, as they look to buy a piece 50x bigger than last time! And Vladimir, this area critically needs protection. It isn?t just wildlife. The Leuser Ecosystem has a crucial role in fighting climate change, storing massive amounts of carbon (the area we could buy stores almost 350,000 metric tons!). When these areas are hacked and set on fire instead of protected, thousands of years of stored carbon are released. In bad fire years, it?s been estimated as comparable to the fossil fuel emissions of all of Western Europe! This is an incredibly rare opportunity. To work with others around the world to buy a piece of critically endangered ecosystem and know you?ve helped protect it. Will you be one of the donors we need to buy their next tract of land quickly? The more we raise, the more they can buy right away ? and every extra penny will be used to defend wild places like this from corporations bent on their destruction. I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Your donation will help power Ek? and our campaigns worldwide fighting for people and the planet. Message-ID: As the largest farm state in the US, California must protect public health, now. California Farms Are Spraying PFAS Forever Chemicals on Foods We Eat. This Must Be Banned, Now! Sign Now Forever chemicals (PFAS) are toxic compounds that research has linked to various diseases, including cancer, immune disorders, thyroid issues, kidney and liver conditions, and more. So why did California allow farms to spray an average of 2.5 million pounds of PFAS each year on crops that we eat? Over the course of 6 years, from 2018 to 2023, the amount of PFAS sprayed on crops amounted to around 15 million pounds. This is because most pesticides contain PFAS ? even the pesticides that the U.S. government has approved for use on food supplies. In fact, one report showed that upwards of 60% of active ingredients in most pesticides qualified as PFAS! Even worse, PFAS are attracted to water, meaning some fruits and vegetables end up absorbing more of the toxic forever chemicals. This includes water-intensive produce items like grapes, tomatoes, and alfalfa, as well as various nuts, including almonds and pistachios. And then, what happens after forever chemicals are applied to our food items? They're harvested, taken to grocery stores, and then... we eat them. We feed them to our families and children. Luckily, some parts of the world are taking action. The European Union has begun banning PFAS in certain pesticides, and is considering a larger plan to phase out PFAS use entirely. If the European Union can do this, then so can California. As the nation's largest agricultural producer, it has an obligation to prioritize the nation's health! Sign the petition to demand an immediate ban on toxic forever chemicals on farms in California! Thank you, Celeste Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Forever chemicals are linked to horrible diseases. The Alternative to Fear and Exhaustion Dear Vladimir, Around this time last year, I made a commitment to readers of this newsletter to keep publishing and defending the truth. I wrote: ?Autocrats thrive on fear and exhaustion. If we give in now, they win. We?ve fought too hard for too long to throw in the towel. We owe it to ourselves and our fellow beings to keep moving forward, to continue watchdogging those in power, even when the future seems bleak.? A year later, I?m heartened by how, despite being anxious and exhausted, people have stood firm in the face of threats to their communities. In Tucson, Arizona, locals rallied to block a new data center from guzzling their water. In Chicago, Illinois, people equipped with nothing more than whistles faced down armed, masked federal agents stalking their neighborhoods. In South Dakota, Native American tribes and environmental groups came together to fight yet another mining boom. People kept moving forward despite their fear. As people resist authoritarianism, we need independent publications like Earth Island Journal that amplify their voices ? that don?t shy away from speaking up against bullies, be they presidents or corporations. Can we count on your help to keep at it? Yes! I'll support the Green Journalism Fund. This year, we reaffirm our commitment to stand up for people and the planet in 2026 and beyond. Here?s how: a.. We will publish and defend the truth: Our job is to marshal the facts to make a passionate argument for defending Earth. Truth is fundamental to a democratic society, even more so when bad actors flood the airwaves with propaganda. b.. Putting people first: Environmental and social justice issues cannot be untangled from one another. The Journal will continue to go the extra mile to show how real people are standing up to defend their communities from the sprawling threats of climate disruption, pollution, authoritarianism, and more ? while shedding light on how these challenges intersect. c.. Our stories help you find your lane: The fight for the planet has many opportunities for action, from taking to the streets to writing your representatives to pushing for change at the local level. We?ll keep bringing you inspiring stories and avenues for engagement from across the global environmental movement, so you can decide where you can have the biggest impact. Quality journalism is getting harder and harder to access even as our lives get more and more media-saturated. Meanwhile, instead of supporting community discourse and an informed populace, oligarchs are buying well-respected media outlets like The Washington Post and CBS News and seeking to turn them into pricey megaphones for the rich and powerful. Unlike those publications, we don?t gatekeep access to information. On our website, people can access the fact-based, trustworthy journalism they need, regardless of their ability to pay for a subscription. As a mission-driven journalism nonprofit, we publish our articles without a paywall. This would not be possible without donations from generous readers like you. Make your gift to the Green Journalism Fund. Thank you for supporting independent, people-powered journalism. Enjoy some rest as the year comes to a close. Take care of yourself and the people you trust. We need each other. Regards, Maureen Nandini Mitra Editor-in-Chief, Earth Island Journal PS: Gifts of any size make a big difference. Defend Free Speech: Support CAIR and Civil Rights Organizations Sign Now Civil rights are becoming even more under attack in the U.S. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis just issued an executive order that is sparking concern among advocacy organizations and legal experts across the U.S. It targets the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, labeling it a supposed "foreign terrorist organization." This action mirrors a similar proclamation in November by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, which CAIR is challenging in federal court. These are Islamophobic decisions made without any basis in fact or reason. For 30 years, the non-profit CAIR has devoted itself to protecting free speech, advancing civil liberties and justice, and defending religious freedom. These are American values, and this is work that is fully protected by the First Amendment's right to freedom of expression. Despite this, DeSantis wrote in a social media post that: "Florida agencies are hereby directed to undertake all lawful measures to prevent unlawful activities by these organizations, including denying privileges or resources to anyone providing material support." These escalating right-wing attacks on charities and non-profits should frighten all Americans. This is a clear attempt to suppress civil rights and to smear reputable non-profit organizations. Texas and Florida's executive orders represent a betrayal of the First Amendment and a misuse of political office and taxpayer resources. Both DeSantis and Abbott must reverse their dangerous attempts to designate this civil liberties group as a "foreign terrorist organization." Sign the petition to speak out now! Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | DECEMBER 12, 2025 Seeds of Connection Since moving back to California?s Bay Area this fall, I?ve been trying to learn about the Native peoples, cultures, and histories of this region. This is how, on a recent Saturday, I found myself at a public library, talking to Gabriel Duncan about acorn flour. Duncan is a descendant of the Utu Utu Gwaitu Benton Paiute Tribe who grew up in Alameda, California. He?s the founder of the Alameda Native History Project, which has been working to produce acorn flour to share with the local Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and other Indigenous communities ? and with non-Indigenous people like me through workshops. Like many Americans, I didn?t learn much about Indigenous peoples in school, and what I did learn was often inaccurate or referred to them in the past tense, as if all Native peoples had gone extinct. Of course, they?re still here, and they?re still producing flour from acorns ? once a staple food source for Indigenous peoples in California and around the world. ?[Acorns are] mostly water, and then fat, starch, and protein,? Duncan told me. ?They?re a superfood that?s, like, magic.? At the workshop, acorns had already been harvested, sorted, and cracked open. The next step was grinding. But Duncan wasn?t using a mortar and pestle like I had seen in the picture books; he was demonstrating on a metal grain mill mounted to a table. ?If we had technology to grind in a day instead of a month, we?d use it,? Duncan said, cranking the mill?s handle. ?That?s survival.? This combination of tradition and technology, Indigenous knowledge and modern food science, is a hallmark of the ACORNS! Project Arc, Duncan told me later. The larger goal is to reconnect people with the land and Indigenous foodways, from harvesting acorns in local oak groves to transforming the finished flour into crepes or cookies. Duncan emphasized that eating acorns is not exotic ? it?s something people in this region have been doing for more than 10,000 years. But colonization has severed such food practices in part by turning Indigenous lands into private property. The Alameda Native History Project partners with organizations like the John Muir Land Trust to harvest acorns from private properties, and is looking for other partners ? including farms and vineyards ? with oak trees. Now that I?ve watched acorns get ground and soaked (to remove harmful tannins), I look forward to tasting dishes made with acorn flour, and to helping harvest what?s expected to be a bumper crop next year. There?s so much to learn, and unlearn, and I appreciate hands-on opportunities like this to connect in a way that feels reciprocal. Do you have any plans to incorporate native foods and cultural traditions into your holiday celebrations? We?d love to hear about them. Greedy New Mining Operations Risk Extinction for Oldest, Rarest Orangutans on Earth Sign Now Tapanuli apes are both the oldest of all orangutan species, as well as the most rare, with only 800 individuals left alive today. They only live in Indonesia ? where a mining company is now seeking to excavate a gold deposit supposedly worth several billion dollars. With so few members of this species left alive, even a small disruption could spell doom for their entire population. And mining operations have more than just a "small" impact. Mining involves clearing out forests, constructing new roads, bringing in large and loud construction equipment, and terrorizing the Earth. Scientists are pointing out that even harming just 1% of the tiny Tapanuli population each year would quickly lead to extinction. That's especially true if female orangutans are hurt or killed, since Tapanuli only mate and reproduce once or twice in a decade. And what is all of this for? Just so humans can stare at their nice shiny golden objects. Is that really worth potentially exterminating an entire ancient species? We can't let greed, billionaires, and corporations destroy this safe haven for the oldest and rarest orangutans on planet Earth! Sign the petition to demand that the Indonesian government shut down this mining operation now and set stronger protections for the Tapanuli and their habitat! U.S. Healthcare Is About to Get Even More Expensive in 2026, Bankrupting the Sick and Vulnerable. We Need Medicare for All. Sign Now The end of the year is fast approaching ? millions of Americans are gathering with loved ones to celebrate holidays, making New Year's resolutions?and watching in horror as a healthcare crisis speeds towards them in 2026. In early 2026, Affordable Care Act tax credits are set to expire ? and when they do, many families could see their health insurance premiums jump by $1,000 a year or more. These credits have been a lifeline since the pandemic. Letting them expire would push countless people closer to medical and financial ruin. Democrats have offered a straightforward solution: extend the ACA subsidies. Republicans, however, remain divided and have pushed proposals that would eliminate the credits altogether, replacing them with inadequate savings accounts that help only after people are already drowning in medical bills. Earlier this month, both approaches failed in a deeply divided Senate, once again leaving Americans' health at the mercy of political gridlock and corporate insurance interests. The consequences of this broken system are deadly. Americans die years earlier than their counterparts in other wealthy nations, and tens of thousands die every year simply because they can't afford to see a doctor. This is not a failure of resources ? it's the result of a for-profit healthcare system that prioritizes insurance company profits over human lives. There is a real, lasting solution: Medicare for All. The Medicare for All Act, introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Debbie Dingell, would guarantee comprehensive healthcare for everyone ? regardless of income, job, or health status ? and ensure no one goes bankrupt just for being sick. Sign the petition now and demand that Congress stop gambling with our lives and pass Medicare for All. Thank you, Sophie Care2 Petitions Team P.S. But through it all, this movement rose to meet the moment, pushing for accountability, defending human rights, and challenging the systems that put profit over people and planet. So now, let?s look back on twelve months of resistance, courage, and impact ? a year powered by all of us, together. The Year We Fought for Human Rights Shifting Europe?s Political Landscape: At a moment of profound global crisis, Ek? members united in solidarity. Across Europe, our movement helped drive unprecedented pressure to suspend the EU?Israel Association Agreement. Polling we commissioned in Italy showed overwhelming public support, generating major headlines and prompting a shift in Prime Minister Meloni?s stance. In Denmark, a full-page Ek? ad urging the Prime Minister to ?choose the right side of history? was followed days later by Denmark announcing its support for trade suspension and new sanctions. Thanks to Ek? members, these major breakthroughs have reshaped the political debate. Exposing Maersk?s Role in Genocide: Ek? members helped force a breakthrough in corporate accountability by pushing Maersk to stop shipping goods to illegal Israeli settlements. The UN had named the company in an expert report on the ?economy of genocide,? and Ek? members amplified the pressure: filing a hard-hitting shareholder resolution, sending thousands of emails, and funding bold ads during Maersk?s AGM, making it impossible for Maersk to hide its role in genocide. Challenging EU Leadership on Palestine: As public outrage grew over the EU?s failure to act on Gaza, Ek? members mobilised at lightning speed. Working closely with MEP Manon Aubry, we drove thousands of calls into MEPs? offices in under 48 hours, urging them to support a no-confidence motion against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. 72 MEPs signed on, enough to formally submit the motion. While it ultimately failed to pass, it showed von der Leyen how close she is to getting sacked for her corruption and loyalty to war criminals. And forced her to propose, for the first time, the suspension of the EU-Israel trade deal. Forcing AXA to Divest: After six years of sustained campaigning, Ek? members helped win a monumental victory: AXA fully divested from weapons manufacturers supplying Israel?s assault on Gaza. And Ek?'s campaign report on AXA was featured in the new UN special rapporteur's report. This is one of the largest financial wins in the fight for accountability, made possible by persistence and people power. The Year We Built the Future, Responsibly Protecting AI for the Public: This year, our movement made it clear: the future of AI must serve people, not private greed. When Big Tech tried to refashion OpenAI for profit, our community mobilised. We launched a bold, superhero-themed ad campaign targeting Attorneys General in California and Delaware, plastered flyers outside their offices, lit up Times Square with a towering Sam Altman billboard, and ran a digital ad storm following OpenAI?s board members wherever they went. Even as OpenAI pushed ahead with its for-profit restructure, our member pressure forced major concessions: an OpenAI board member must now meet every six months with California Attorney General Rob Bonta to report on progress toward the company?s non-profit mission, and board member Zico Kolter, head of the safety and security committee, now holds the power to halt new product launches if there are safety concerns?a direct check on runaway tech before the damage is done. And we?re not letting up. We?ve already begun holding OpenAI to account post-restructure by exposing how its new video generation tool, Sora 2, allows teens to generate and view violent and racist content. We sent these findings directly to the Attorney General?s office and briefed the press, including Rolling Stone, sending a clear signal: we are watching, and OpenAI must prove it is putting humanity over profit. Challenging Microsoft?s Role in Genocide: When Microsoft?s cloud and AI systems became embedded in Israel?s military operations, we helped expose the company?s role. Together with Microsoft workers, we co-filed a shareholder resolution backed by 58 investors ? an unprecedented number, and then received about a quarter of the vote from shareholders, which is exceptionally strong for a first-time resolution. We also advanced a global legal strategy, submitting a GDPR complaint to the Irish data protection regulator, and preparing avenues for ICC complaints. Our movement made Microsoft a central target in the fight against tech-enabled war crimes. Exposing Tech?s Harm: In 2025, Ek? members pushed some of the world?s most powerful tech companies to face the consequences of their actions. We exposed how Meta and X profit from extremism and war ? approving ads that fund Israeli military gear tied to war crimes and allowing far-right campaigns that spread genocidal rhetoric. We delivered our findings directly to EU regulators, strengthening and expanding investigations into Big Tech?s failures. And our pressure is already paying off: Elon Musk was just hit with a ?120 million fine under one of these investigations. The Year We Protected the Wild Saving Dolphins in Mexico: A heartbreaking video of Mincho the dolphin collapsing during a forced performance sparked national outrage and together with partners, Ek? members helped turn that outrage into real change. We pushed authorities to shut the tank down and then we fought for a national ban on dolphin captivity. Together, we helped win the Mincho Law, ending dolphin torture across Mexico. Putting an EU Octopus Ban on the Agenda: Ek? members helped make history in Brussels by supporting the EU Parliament?s first-ever policy event calling for a ban on octopus farming. Scientists, lawyers, researchers, civil society groups, and MEPs came together to map the legal pathways to stop this industry before it begins. We hand-delivered thousands of signatures directly to the lawmakers leading the charge. This is a major step toward a Europe-wide ban, and with our partners at Eurogroup for Animals, we?ll keep going until it becomes law. Defending Donkey Lives in the United States: Our movement helped reintroduce federal legislation to ban the brutal donkey-skin trade in the U.S. Together with our coalition of partners, Ek? members powered advocacy days on Capitol Hill where our partners met directly with House Representatives, and ran nationwide digital ads that lawmakers could not ignore. Thanks to this collective pressure, the bill is back on the table and gaining real momentum. Challenging Horse-Blood Cruelty in Iceland: Ek? members helped shine a global spotlight on Iceland?s horse-blood farms. Alongside the Animal Welfare Foundation and our Icelandic partners, we staged a powerful ?bloody? protest at the Icelandic Parliament and met with the Minister of Industries to urge the government not to renew Isteka?s licence. The action was covered by major media outlets across Iceland. Together with our partners, we are mobilising public outrage, amping up political pressure, and forcing this cruelty into the open. The Year We Challenged Planet-Wrecking Power Pressuring Swiss Re: Together with Public Eye, Ek? members pushed one of the world?s largest insurers to strengthen its environmental and human-rights safeguards in Brazil. Thousands of us signed the petition, which we delivered directly at Swiss Re?s AGM in Zurich ? even when executives tried to avoid receiving it. Weeks later, Swiss Re confirmed updates to its ESG risk processes for Brazil, integrating stronger protections for Indigenous territories and conservation areas. It?s a modest but meaningful shift ? and a sign that even global financial giants feel the pressure when people act together. Taxing Luxury Pollution: Working with the Global Solidarity Taskforce, Ek? members helped push governments to back a levy on private jets and luxury flight tickets ? a policy designed to make the world?s wealthiest polluters finally pay. Ek? members flooded ministries with messages. And days later, France, Spain, and others publicly backed this groundbreaking proposal. Blocking Environmental Rollbacks in Brazil and Taking the Fight to COP: When Brazil?s Congress passed a bill gutting environmental protections, letting oil and gas companies self-approve drilling, the Ek? community mobilised fast. We launched a rapid-response campaign and delivered our petition straight to the Presidential Palace in Bras?lia. The pressure paid off: President Lula da Silva vetoed key sections of the bill, stopping some of its most dangerous provisions. We then took the fight to the global stage. On the eve of COP30, Ek? lit up the Rio de Janeiro skyline with a massive projection calling on world leaders to defend the Paris Agreement. Alongside Indigenous leaders from the Alian?a pela Volta Grande do Xingu, we staged a powerful river action on Guajar? Bay demanding an end to the extractive industry in the Amazon. And inside the negotiations themselves, we transformed COP?s massive globe into a direct call on President Lula to reverse oil drilling in the Amazon ? backed by our poll showing 61% of Brazilians oppose drilling in the Amazon basin. From Bras?lia to the Amazon to the heart of COP itself, our movement forced this fight into the spotlight. This has been a year defined by resistance, courage, and impact ? month after month, campaign after campaign. A year that shows how powerful a global community can be. As we step into 2026, we carry this momentum with us. The systems we?re challenging are vast, but so is the force we?ve built together. If this year proved anything, it?s that the Ek? movement is ready for whatever comes next ? and ready to win. Add your name and share widely to save the Great Migration: Sign the petition In a spectacular, remote corner of the Maasai Mara reserve, something extraordinary happens every year: millions of wildebeest, zebra and other animals cross the plain as part of the Great Migration. Now they have a new landlord: Ritz-Carlton. The hotel chain built a $5,000 per night luxury resort right at a crucial river bend, and now they?ve won a gag order on the Maasai elder defending the Great Migration, as a group of Maasai sue them over the hotel. Conservationists are reporting major wildlife impacts, with elephants searching for ways to cross the river after more than a decade of doing it in one spot: right where this resort is. In just two weeks, there?s a critical hearing in the Maasai case against the hotel, and local activists still think the hotel could have its permits removed ? and even be torn down. Let?s get behind them with a global call and give the Maasai and the wildlife back what?s theirs: Sign and share to throw Ritz-Carlton out of the Maasai Mara Sustainable tourism is an important part of keeping wildlife corridors like this alive. Intrusive luxury amusement parks for the uber-rich are the opposite. Marriott has no history of conservation or commitment to the community. Ritz-Carlton?s tagline for the hotel is ?offering front-row seats to one of the world?s greatest natural wonders?. That?s exactly the problem. Super-rich guests are getting exclusive access at the expense of the animals themselves, and without any attempt at conservation or ecological stewardship. The lodge is built right on top of the river in a way that impedes the animals? movements and puts stress on them by being so close. One Maasai leader called it ?one of the most favoured corridors? for the animals. In fact, a recent video shows a litany of problems: a massive warehouse not in the original plans, 20+ buildings for a site licensed for 18 beds, modification of the river bank itself, buildings inside the river protection setback zone, and a MASSIVE footprint on the land, much larger than the public plans they submitted. Here?s the resort, crammed right along the river bend: Now rumours and controversy are swirling. There?s the legal challenge, and the gag order against a Maasai elder. The President of Kenya, who gave Ritz a development exemption in the first place, has come out in support of the hotel. And now the Kenyan Wildlife Service recently said that the migration is not affected. But conservationists worry they?re wrong ? and that?s not the only issue (permits, consent, etc). There?s another court hearing on December 19. Let?s show Ritz that the world is watching ? and show the Maasai that we?re with them as they fight this luxury stain on their land. View message online New LFT Report: A Billion Views for Animal Cruelty Online SIGN THE PETITION Dear Alexey, The findings are horrifying: animals are being beaten, tortured, and even killed for clicks on social media. And the companies hosting this content are failing to stop it. Our new investigative report reveals thousands of brutal animal abuse videos shared on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Collectively, these clips racked up more than 1 billion views. Among the worst abuses we found: a.. Monkey torture videos often disguised as ?cute? family clips ? with baby primates beaten, starved, teased, and stripped of their dignity. b.. Fake rescues, where puppies, kittens, and other animals were deliberately put in danger so abusers could stage dramatic ?saves.? c.. Animal fighting videos, where animals like dogs, cats, roosters, and snakes are forced to attack one another, often in confined spaces. d.. Graphic abuse, including videos of animals such as puppies, kittens, and chickens being crushed, burned, or sexually exploited. Disturbingly, we?ve also found that social platforms are serving as gateways to encrypted messaging apps like Telegram, where longer, even more violent videos are shared, sold, and requested by paying customers. Abusers are using social media as a marketplace for cruelty. Facebook was by far the worst offender, hosting more than three-quarters of all the cruel content we found ? including 95% of monkey torture clips. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and X also hosted shocking material, and none of the platforms enforced their own policies consistently. Even after we reported these posts, the companies often failed to remove even the most egregious abuse. This isn?t just devastating for animals. These videos also harm people ? especially children ? who are being exposed daily to cruelty disguised as humor, education, or ?cute? content. Experts warn that this exposure desensitizes viewers, normalizes violence, and even encourages copycat abuse. Please sign our petition to demand that social media companies prevent and remove animal-cruelty content from their platforms. SIGN THE PETITION You can also help by reporting abusive posts to the social media platforms and authorities, and sending evidence directly to LFT at reportposts at ladyfreethinker.org. We have great news ? and one more call to action. Our partners in Ecuador have almost everything they need to buy this species-rich wonderland. Our support helped them make a down payment, and get grants from major conservation funders. Now they just need one last push before a December 27th deadline to get every last dollar they need for the full payment! This is what they told us: ?This is a real deadline because if we do not come up with the payment by then, the seller can decide to turn around and legally sell the property to the miners or any of the other interested parties.? There?s real risk, but we can do this, Vladimir. Chip in to help buy and protect this ecosystem forever. I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount -------------------------------------------------------------------- This is mind-blowing: there?s a place in the Amazon that scientists argue has more species per square kilometer than anywhere else on the planet. Ferocious jaguars, emerald green boas, powerful harpy eagles, shy tapirs, and more?all sharing the same forest home (see lots of pictures below!!) But this pinnacle of biodiversity is under critical threat: the mouth of Ecuador?s Anzu River has been included in a concession to a gold mining company, TerraEarth. The only way to stop a mine from being ripped into the heart of this paradise is to buy the surrounding land, ensuring the company can?t get the legally-required permissions from landowners?because the landowners would be *US*. Actually, we?d help our local partner, Khamai, buy the land and incorporate it into the neighbouring Pitalala reserve. The newly expanded reserve would be a haven for nature and scientific research, a rewilded paradise protected forever. If we can act fast. This sounds dramatic, but these are the stakes: can you chip in to help us save what might *literally* be the most species-rich place on Earth? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount Creating this protected area is urgent. Even aside from the concession, illegal gold mining in the area is exploding and miners are offering to rent or purchase land at above market value. Owners are looking to sell and have already received offers from the miners. Our partners are in touch with the landowners and have the opportunity to acquire the land before the miners do (they prefer the land conserved!) ? but only if we act now. This is what this incredible area should look like, pristine and untouched ? the part of the reserve that already exists: But the surrounding land is being devastated: And it?s happening fast: It?s hard to find a more obvious case for urgent conservation action. The place that might have more species density than anywhere else on Earth vs total devastation to mine gold. And we have great partners to do it. Khamai works with local communities Mulchiyacu and Zatzayacu, to promote sustainable economic alternatives to illegal mining, like ecotourism and conservation-based employment, to ensure there?s incentive to keep the land safe. They?ll also work to restore land that has already been damaged, and eventually to get UNESCO protection status for this irreplaceable piece of the planet. Vladimir, our community has bought critically-threatened pieces of nature before. But never in a place with *this* much natural life?because there might not be another place on Earth to match it. Can you chip in to buy and protect this part of the Ecuadorian Amazon ? and fuel campaigns like this to protect people and the planet from profit-hungry corporations, worldwide? Climate Change and Energy News: Weekly Digest by CAN EECCA -------------------------------------------------- Someone forwarded this digest to you? You can subscribe using this link -------------------------------------------------- Dear subscribers, Climate change is already reshaping life across the EECCA region. In Kyrgyzstan, it could push another 170,000 people into poverty over the next 15 years. Uzbekistan is setting up Central Asia?s first air quality lab, yet Tashkent is already struggling with dangerous smog despite its NDC 3.0 targets. In Georgia, glacier research results remain unpublished, while extreme weather in Armenia exposed vulnerabilities in infrastructure and agriculture. Ukraine?s major energy projects remain unfunded, and Belarus is preparing an interactive long-term climate forecasting system. Meanwhile, 2025 is approaching record-high temperatures, and the US has removed references to fossil fuels as a cause of global warming from the EPA website, despite the well-established human role in the crisis. At the end of this issue ? new opportunities for activists. Best regards, CAN EECCA Communications Manager Aizirek Almazbekova -------------------------------------------------- News from the EECCA Region By 2040, climate change could push 170,000 more Kyrgyzstanis into poverty The World Bank warns rural communities most at risk from floods and landslides, which are expected to worsen with climate change. While overall poverty growth may be moderate, climate shocks could dramatically affect the most vulnerable households. The European Court of Human Rights must consider Russian climate case Environmental activists in Strasbourg are calling on the ECHR to advance a lawsuit against Russia, which has been pending for over two years. They stress that Russia remains a top global polluter, expanding fossil fuel production despite its Paris Agreement commitments, worsening the climate crisis and human risks. Uzbekistan?s NDC 3.0 fails to prevent dangerous smog in Tashkent Despite pledging a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity by 2035, Tashkent faced record air pollution by late 2025. This highlights that high-level CO? targets do not address PM2.5, transportation, and coal reliance, which directly impact public health. Georgia withholds $1.5M glacier research results After a tragedy in Shovi, authorities funded extensive studies of glacier valleys, identifying seven high-risk climate zones. However, final reports remain unpublished, leaving critical data inaccessible as glaciers melt rapidly and early warning systems are nearly absent. Major energy projects in Ukraine remain unfunded Part 1 Part 2 New thermal, gas, and nuclear projects worth tens of billions of hryvnias are still awaiting financing, except for some regional thermal projects supported by international donors. Armenia faces rising climate risks and weak preparedness Spring 2024 floods revealed vulnerabilities in Armenia?s infrastructure, agriculture, and civil protection systems. Although Armenia contributes minimally to global emissions, extreme weather events are increasing, and the lack of comprehensive adaptation and preventive measures amplifies socio-economic losses. Green Climate Fund approves $250M for glacier adaptation in EECCA Funds will support sustainable water management and agriculture in glacier-dependent regions across nine countries, benefiting millions amid the escalating climate crisis. Uzbekistan and World Bank discuss Central Asia?s first air quality lab The $1M lab at Green University will monitor PM2.5 pollution and its sources in Tashkent, strengthening research and public health measures amid persistently high air pollution. Belarus to develop interactive long-term climate forecasting system Belhydromet and the National Academy of Sciences will model climate change under different CO? scenarios for all 118 districts, enhancing long-term planning. -------------------------------------------------- World Climate and Energy News Copernicus: 2025 could be world?s second-hottest year Copernicus Climate Change Service reports November 2025 as the third-warmest on record, with 2023?2025 possibly exceeding 1.5?C above pre-industrial levels. Scientists warn this signals an accelerating climate crisis, with extreme weather, sea ice loss, and growing human risks, emphasizing urgent emissions cuts. US EPA removes fossil fuels as a driver of global warming from website The agency now emphasizes natural causes, a move criticized by scientists and former EPA officials as misleading, since most modern warming stems from human activity, particularly coal, oil, and gas use. -------------------------------------------------- Opportunities Energy Sustainability Program 2026: students and young professionals Participants gain workshops with international experts, practical tools for climate and energy projects, peer support, and opportunities to bring ideas to life. Applications are open until January 8, 2026. Consortium to preserve historical forest data IUFRO launched a consortium under Working Group T57 to save old forest data, crucial for restoration, resource management, and biodiversity protection. African hornbills are disappearing from East Africa's forests ? because of a booming pet and body parts trade. Online platforms like Etsy or eBay are allowing the trade despite touting policies that prohibit the sale of wildlife. We need to act before these charismatic birds are hunted to extinction ? add your name: Sign the petition Alexey, African hornbills are "farmers of the forests": these big, iconic birds with huge beaks play a crucial role as seed dispersers in the forests they inhabit. But their numbers in the wild are plummeting as they?re being hunted for trade, dead or alive. For years, online platforms like eBay, Etsy and Facebook, despite promoting policies that ban the sale of wildlife, have profited off a completely unregulated trade: hundreds of listings of ornaments made of hornbill skulls, casques and feathers. None of the 32 African hornbill species used to be protected internationally ? until now. Just days ago, governments finally granted African hornbills their first-ever international protection ? a landmark breakthrough that changes everything. Let?s use this momentum to tell eBay, Etsy and Meta to immediately update their policies and ban *all* hornbill products from their platforms NOW: Etsy, eBay, Meta: Protect African hornbills ? stop selling hornbills and their products! When East Asian hornbills were pushed to the brink by trade, protection under the global wildlife trade agreement CITES helped pull them back from extinction. But the so-called ?free market? did what it does best: it moved on ? to Africa, and now these spectacular and charismatic birds are disappearing from the forests of East Africa. A recent study showed that between 1999 and 2024, the U.S., which ranks as one of the world?s largest wildlife importers, received about 100 hornbills per year, all likely taken from the wild. And while 100 birds a year might not sound huge, it?s disastrous for a long-lived, slow-breeding species like hornbills. And despite claiming to ban wildlife trafficking, eBay, Etsy and Meta remain prime destinations for hornbill products. Loopholes let sellers move skulls, ornaments, and other parts of the bird by changing the labels, and the platforms look the other way. We need to stop this before the African hornbills meet the same fate as their East Asian counterparts. And the first step towards their immediate protection has just happened: CITES listed them as too endangered to be traded unregulated. Now we need to call on the mega online platforms to update their policies immediately and ban all hornbill products permanently from their sites. Add your name to our call: Etsy, eBay, Meta: Protect African hornbills ? stop selling hornbills and their products! When the online trade in hornbills from the Philippines surged and drove the species to near extinction, this community acted and called on Facebook to shut down the trade. Let?s do it again for its African counterpart before it?s too late. Sign the petition Thanks for all that you do, Rosa, Deborah and the team at Ek? Display newsletter in browser Working together for the rainforest Before the year ends ? stand with with Tongka?s forest guardians Dear friends of the rainforests, When people in Tongka talk about their forest, they do not start with hectares and maps ? they start with their ancestors. For generations, the Dayak Tewoyan people have fished the Barito River, gathered rattan and honey, and cared for sacred groves where they ask the forest for guidance and strength. Today, their descendants are protecting this forest together with our local partner organization, Save Our Borneo. A forest that finally has a name Now, nearly 6,000 hectares are officially recognized as the Tongka Village Forest, finally bearing the community?s name. Coal and palm oil corporations can no longer simply draw lines on a map and move in with chainsaws and excavators. For Tongka, this is more than a legal victory ? it is proof that they are not powerless in the face of land grabbing and backroom political deals. How Tongka won recognition Behind this success lie years of patient work: villagers walking the boundaries, mapping every stream and hill, and documenting graves, caves, and old settlement sites to show that this forest is their home, not ?empty land.? Save Our Borneo has stood with them through every meeting and every setback, turning local knowledge and community courage into a powerful case for land rights. Borneo?s communities under pressure Tongka is not alone. Across Borneo, Indigenous communities are resisting peatland ?food estates,? mega-plantations, and fires that choke the air and harm the climate. Peat forests that once stored immense amounts of carbon and sheltered orangutans and hornbills are being drained for shortsighted schemes that have already failed in the past. When these peatlands burn, families flee the smoke, children fall ill, and entire landscapes are reduced to ash. The Tongka model and your support A better way is within reach: securing Indigenous land rights, restoring peatlands instead of draining them, and trusting communities that have protected these forests for centuries. Please donate now to support Save Our Borneo ? your gift will place title deeds in villagers? hands, bring water back to drained peat, and show young activists that the world has not forgotten their struggle. When these sites flood, the damage won't stop at eroded shorelines. Rising seas could unleash toxic pollution into nearby communities, contaminating soil and water and putting people, wildlife, and ecosystems at risk ? even in areas not directly underwater. Upgrade to paidLand, protecting Alejandro Arteaga is the CEO of Khamai Foundation, a US and Ecuador based nonprofit which advocates for biodiversity and saving rainforests. Working with Ek?, the organization has developed a reserve in the Amazon, but much remains to be done. We caught up with Arteaga and asked him some questions about the work?and what challenges remain. How is the land protection project going? The Pitalala Reserve urgent land expansion that will incorporate the 78-hectare land lot into the reserve should be completed thanks to an upcoming grant from Ek?. The next step is to obtain funding to pay for taxes and legal fees necessary for recognition of the purchase of the land. However, this is just the first step, as we seek to protect an area of over 10,000 hectares that will create a wildlife corridor between the Llanganates National Park and the Jatun Sacha Reserve. What challenges are you facing? The protected land is surrounded by many land lots that may be destroyed with incredible speed and without notice, which would render the saved plot isolated. What successes have you had this year? Thanks to Ek? and 152 other backers, we will have protected the first 150 hectares of Pitalala Reserve. This is just the beginning. Ultimately, we seek to create a protected area inside the ?biodiversity vertex,? a 100 km2 quadrant holding the ABSOLUTE greatest number of animal and plant species per unit area anywhere on Earth, hoping to secure its designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The creation of the reserve will stop a network of colossal open-pit gold mining operations through the direct purchase of various rainforest land lots totaling 2,200 hectares. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you want to contribute to the upcoming grant Alejandro mentions, you can do so here. Tell lawmakers to stop this cruelty and put an end to farrowing crates. Sign the petition The pig industry locks mother pigs into metal cages so tight they cannot turn around. These intelligent animals, who sing to their newborns and form deep bonds, are immobilized during the most important moment of their lives. Right now, we have a once-in-a-generation chance to finally ban these cruel cages, as the European Union is revising its animal welfare laws. If we create massive public pressure, lawmakers can be pushed to end this cruel practice for good. But the window to act is closing fast. We need thousands of us backing this call right now. Add your name to demand an end to cages for mother pigs. Pigs are as emotionally complex as dogs ? they build nests, hum to their babies, and recognize each piglet by voice. Yet when confined in farrowing crates, they are stripped of these natural behaviors and suffer physical and psychological distress. The industry claims these cages prevent piglet crushing. But the reality is far more brutal: the pig industry uses them to crowd more animals into less space to squeeze out more profit. And this cruelty is entirely avoidable. Humane alternatives already exist across Europe, proving farmers can transition without compromising safety or viability. After years of public pressure, the European Union committed to phasing out cruel cages like farrowing crates. But that promise has been delayed?and unless it is written clearly into the new animal welfare law, it could be weakened or abandoned altogether. This is our moment: the chance to hold lawmakers accountable and force an end to these cruel cages once and for all. That?s why we must act now. Every signature piles pressure on policymakers, and if enough of us speak out together, we can create an outcry so powerful they will have no choice but to listen. Is this email difficult to read? View in your web browser. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | DECEMBER 19, 2025 After the Fire ON A COLD, clear morning last October, 57-year-old Sophie Guiraudon led me along a dusty track that snaked up a hillside toward an old stone sheepfold. On either side of the path, we were surrounded by seemingly endless rows of charred vines, which stood in stark contrast to the beige and bone-white hues of the cracked earth from which they grew. Or rather, had grown. As she surveyed what was left of her 25-acre estate, Guiraudon spoke of the wild beauty she had once found in the rough terrain of this rocky plateau, set above the medieval village of Lagrasse in the heart of southwestern France?s historic Corbi?res wine region. ?But when I come back here now, this landscape unsettles me,? she said. ?It upsets me physically.? About two months earlier, on August 5, a wildfire had broken out just a couple hundred meters from where we stood. Within 48 hours, it grew into a conflagration that consumed 40,000 acres in the department of Aude (an administrative unit similar to a county that the Corbi?res region is part of). That?s an area more than one-and-a-half times the size of Paris. The fire would go on to become the biggest blaze recorded in France in almost 80 years. It would take 23 days, more than 2,000 firefighters, and the French Civil Security Agency?s entire national air fleet to put it out. Guiraudon lost almost everything. More than 90 percent of the vines she had tended for 25 years to produce refined organic wines were gone within the space of an hour. The fire destroyed more than just decades of hard work. Guiraudon?s children grew up playing among these vines, helping their mother pick grapes at harvest time. ?It was as if all my memories of this place had been taken from me,? she said. Guiraudon had been in the process of selling her estate when the fire hit. More than three years of punishing drought and oppressive summer heatwaves had taken a steep toll on the vineyard. In 2024, her total production had more than halved, dropping from about 6,500 to 8,000 gallons to just over 3,000. ?I had the feeling that things were only going to get worse, so I said to myself, At least you?re going to get a head start,? she said. But the fire denied her the chance to go out on her own terms. Guiraudon?s story is not only emblematic of the wider impact of the fire, which burned a total of more than 2,200 acres of vines in the Corbi?res, it also exemplifies the increasingly existential threat to an industry that has long been this region?s lifeblood, and the uncertain future of the region itself. Journalist Christopher Clark writes about how a devasting August 2025 wildfire in France?s historic Corbi?res wine region has local vinters, farmers, and other residents rethinking their relationship to the land. SUGGESTED BROWSING Cost of Living Immigrant labor is vital to every part of the US economy, yet rather than acknowledge that reality and pass legislation to address it, Congress continues to pour money into the border-industrial complex and the deportation machine. The result is a perverse system in which migrant farmworkers and industrial laborers determined to provide for their families must make the perilous journey north, often with fatal consequences. U.S. to Require Tourists to Share 5+ Years of Social Media Data, Phone Numbers, and Email Addresses Sign Now The U.S. government under Trump is ramping up its efforts to restrict entrance to the country ? even for tourists from ally countries. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) recently proposed a new rule that would block non-citizens from entering the country unless they first reveal their past 5 years of social media activity. Additionally, any tourist hoping to travel to the U.S. would also need to disclose all phone numbers they've used in the past 5 years, and all email addresses used in the past 10 years. The U.S. would also require biometrics ? DNA, irises, face, and fingerprint data ? as well as details about all family members, including their names, places and dates of birth, and current addresses. This is apparently to bring the CBP into compliance with Trump's mandate that tourists "do not bear hostile attitudes toward its citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles." All of this is happening as the U.S. economy and tourism continue to decline. Some researchers say the U.S. will have lost as much as $30 billion in tourism revenue in 2025. Even more mind-bogglingly, this is happening just before the U.S. is set to host the FIFA World Cup with Mexico and Canada in 2026 and and the Olympics in 2028. This amount of surveillance and scrutiny is also a violation of tourists' personal privacy and sets a frightening tone for future escalations. Luckily, the CBP's plan hasn't gone into effect yet. The agency has to provide a 2-month public comment period first, which means we still have a chance to make an impact. Now is the time to speak out! Sign the petition today! A recent report found that a whopping 42,000 square miles of forest are gone in areas with high concentrations of coffee-growing operations. Georgia Shows How Small Countries Can Drive Global Change According to Georgia?s Minister of Agriculture, the country has made strong progress in environmental governance and climate policy. Georgia plans to ban single-use plastics and expanded polystyrene products from 2026, has adopted an EU-aligned water law, and aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2035. -------------------------------------------------- World Climate and Energy News EU Sets 90% Emissions Cut Target for 2040, Allows Carbon Credits The European Union has agreed on a legally binding target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% from 1990 levels by 2040. Member states may use international carbon credits to cover up to 5% of the reductions, following intense negotiations ahead of COP30. The deal also postpones the launch of the new ETS2 emissions trading system until 2028. Denying climate change is no longer the main strategy. The new strategy is to make you give up on those trying to confront it. A new analysis by the Observatory for Information Integrity shows that 35% of the most popular online discussions about COP30 contained climate-related disinformation. Rather than denying climate change outright, these narratives aim to undermine trust in institutions and climate policies. Wildfires, floods, and drinking water shortages: U.S. boycott disrupts global plans to combat climate change At COP30 in Brazil, the UN acknowledged that the world has failed to keep warming within 1.5?C. Iceland is the only country in Europe still running blood farms for PMSG, and its government is deciding right now whether to finally ban this cruelty. Add your name now to demand Iceland ban PMSG for good! Sign the petition It sounds like something out of a dystopian nightmare, but it?s real: pregnant horses are restrained and drained of massive amounts of blood, leaving them weak and traumatized ? all so the pharmaceutical industry can extract PMSG, a hormone used to fuel factory farms. And Iceland is at the center of this horror. As the only producer of PMSG in Europe, its blood farms keep industrial animal agriculture running across the continent. Without Iceland?s supply, the entire industry takes a major hit. But right now, we have a rare chance to shut these farms down for good. Iceland?s government has already admitted that blood farms violate EU animal welfare laws. Under pressure, they?ve pledged to reconsider the future of PMSG production *this year*?to either ban it permanently or allow this cruelty to continue. Meanwhile, ?steka?the pharmaceutical company profiting from this industry?is lobbying hard to keep blood farms open, pressuring Iceland?s government to protect its bottom line. This is our moment. If we raise a massive global outcry now, we can drown out Big Pharma and push Iceland to finally ban PMSG. Tell Iceland: ban PMSG PMSG is the ultimate symbol of factory farming?s brutality?a hormone extracted from the blood of pregnant horses to fuel mass production of meat. In industrial pig farms across Europe, mother sows are injected with PMSG to hijack their bodies, forcing synchronized pregnancies so factory farms can churn out piglets on a rigid schedule. And Big Pharma will argue that PMSG is "essential" to livestock production, claiming that factory farms can?t function without it. But studies show that safe, synthetic alternatives exist. Iceland had a chance to stop it. But in 2023, under pressure from ?steka, the government caved. Instead of banning blood farms, they put forward weak regulations and delayed real action until this year. Now, with the future of PMSG on the line, Big Pharma?s lobbyists are back, fighting to keep the cruelty going. This time, we can?t let them win?Iceland?s leaders need to see that people everywhere are demanding they ban PMSG for good. If we act now, we can make this the turning point. Tell Iceland: ban PMSG The Ek? community has taken on this fight before and won. We pressured two major German pharmaceutical companies to cut ties with blood farms in South America, dealing a big blow to this cruel industry. A while ago we told you about a mind-blowing place in the Amazon that scientists argue has more species per square kilometer than anywhere else on the planet. Ferocious jaguars, emerald green boas, powerful harpy eagles, shy tapirs, and more?all sharing the same forest home (see lots of pictures below!!) We also told you that this pinnacle of biodiversity is under critical threat: the mouth of Ecuador?s Anzu River has been included in a concession to a gold mining company, TerraEarth. We?ve already made a difference: a rush payment from the Ek? community helped them put a down payment on the land. But now their final deadline to pay the balance is TOMORROW, and as they say, ?everything is at risk?! It sounds dramatic, but these are the stakes for one final push: can you chip in to help save what might *literally* be the most species-rich place on Earth? Right now, all donations are matched by a generous donor, doubling your impact! Our partners are in touch with the landowners and have the opportunity to acquire the land before the miners do (they prefer the land conserved!), and with our help they've even made the down payment. But now the deadline for final payment is December 27 - if they don?t make it, ?the seller can decide to turn around and legally sell the property to the miners or any of the other interested parties?! Can you help rush the final payment for the land ? and fuel campaigns like this to protect people and the planet from profit-hungry corporations, worldwide? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount This is what this incredible area should look like, pristine and untouched ? the part of the reserve that already exists: But the surrounding land is being devastated: And it?s happening fast: It?s hard to find a more obvious case for urgent conservation action. Vladimir, There?s an area of the Bolivian Amazon that scientists call a vital bridge between worlds. Here jaguars and pumas roam, maned wolves run, and shy tapirs gently forage ? an entire ecosystem of species move through this natural corridor connecting the humid rainforest with the dry Chiquitano forest. But the last, big stretch of this precious forest is about to be sold to a Brazilian soy giant ? unless we help save it! Our partners on the front lines say it?s not too late to block the sale, but they can?t do it alone. They?re up against agribusiness giant, Bom Futuro, with seemingly endless funds and in an exceptionally complex legal and regulatory process. But with an influx of cash now, they can press ahead with legal challenges, getting officials onside, monitoring forest and documenting threats ? whatever it takes to prove this land must be protected and stop the sale. They?re running out of time ? and urgently asking for help. Can you chip in to save this vital piece of the Bolivian Amazon? I'll donate $3 I'll donate $4 I'll donate $5 I'll donate $9 I'll donate another amount The drawn rectangle in the image is an area 3 times the size of Paris. This is the last stretch of unbroken forest that still connects the Bolivian dry Amazon (the Chiquitano forest) with the larger Amazon basin: If sold to Bom Futuro, precious forest would be razed and replaced with industrial-sized plots of soy, devastating the fragile ecosystem and the surrounding territories where Indigenous communities live: Endangered wildlife won?t be able to move between the Amazon rainforest and Chiquitano dry forests, like the giant armadillo: Millions of acres of Chiquitania have already been destroyed in just a few years. This area of the Bolivian Amazon has some of the highest rates of deforestation from slash-and-burn agriculture. And agribusiness is rushing to swoop in and turn even more of it into farmland. Saving these last acres of unbroken forest is absolutely critical. The forest stores water, shelters wildlife, and protects the people who live around it. This is their last hope for the survival of every living thing there! There's still time to challenge it legally and push regulators to do the right thing. But they're running out of money ? and out of time. If enough of us chip in, we can rush them the cash they need to stop this disastrous land sale. We just met with MEPs in Brussels, and they?re ready to lead the charge. But they need overwhelming public pressure to move an EU-wide ban forward. Tell the EU: Ban octopus factory farms. And right now, nothing stands in their way, as there?s no EU law to stop them. But together, we can change that. We took your voices straight to Brussels, meeting with MEPs at the first high-level policy event ever focused on banning octopus farming at the European Parliament. Scientists, animal welfare experts, and lawmakers were in the room. And one message rang loud and clear: decision-makers are ready to lead ? but they need undeniable public backing to move the ban forward. The clock is ticking. Once the first farm opens, countless octopuses will be trapped in a cycle of suffering. We need thousands of us backing this call right now. Add your name to call on the European Parliament to ban octopus farming Momentum is already building and on our side. Polling shows that a majority of Europeans, including people in Spain where the industry is being pushed, support an EU-wide ban on octopus factory farms. Now, lawmakers need to see that citizens want them to act. Octopuses are among the smartest animals on Earth ? even forming underwater ?cities? where they live and interact with one another. Scientists warn that locking such complex, social beings in barren tanks would be cruel and inhumane. Once this industry starts, it will be much harder to stop. That?s why we must act now. Every signature piles pressure on Parliament, and if enough of us speak out together, we can create an outcry so powerful lawmakers will have no choice but to listen. Sign now to protect octopuses and stop this cruel industry before it spreads. We know this strategy works, as we have done it before ? winning a historic ban on octopus farming in California. Photo: Polar Bears International. Double your impact HERE with a 1:1 match for endangered species in the crosshairs! Hi Vladimir, Our fight to protect the policies that safeguard wildlife, public lands, and clean air and water will not stop. Right now, those protections are under attack?not because they have failed, but because they work. Landmark laws like the Endangered Species Act, bedrock clean air and water safeguards, and protections for public lands have stood in the way of unchecked exploitation for decades. They are popular, effective, and rooted in science. That makes them a problem for powerful interests that see nature not as a shared inheritance, but as a resource to be stripped for profit. Help Endangered Species Coalition fight the billionaires and corporate actors who are pouring unprecedented influence into reshaping environmental and wildlife policies behind closed doors. Their goal is simple: dismantle the rules that protect endangered wildlife, silence public input, and tilt decision-making away from science and toward short-term financial gain. What?s at stake is not abstract. Endangered Species Coalition is meeting this moment head-on. We are defending science-based policy, holding decision-makers accountable, and standing up to efforts that would sell out our natural heritage to the highest bidder. We are elevating public voices where billionaires would prefer silence?and making clear that America?s environmental protections are not for sale. Your support makes this possible. In moments like this, resolve matters. Persistence matters. And people who care deeply about a living, healthy world matter most of all. With your help, this fight continues?and it does not back down. We are in this together!
