                        Bulgaria has officially banned fur farming, in a huge win for animals! Back in 2022, the country's Minister of Environment and Water signed an order to prohibit breeding or importing a popular species of mink in Bulgaria.



                        Predictably, greedy companies protested loudly, claiming they should have the right to torture animals for the sake of selling clothing. This month though, Bulgaria's Supreme Administrative Court upheld the country's ban on fur farming — meaning profit-obsessed companies failed, and the animals won!

                        Fur farming is incredibly distressing to the captive animals involved. Mink are locked into tiny, dirty, feces-filled cages. In some cases, living mink have been left alongside the rotting corpses of their fallen comrades. Unsurprisingly, this results in infections, disease, pain, and horrible suffering. Some recordings have even captured disturbing video of the animals self-maiming in distress.

                        Once they are old enough to have produced "enough" fur, they are sent to gas chambers. After they are dead, their furs are cut from their bodies and sold to become clothing.

                        Luckily, because of the Bulgarian government, the country's last mink farm closed in January 2025. It was able to breed around 129,000 mink per year. Now, mink will be safe from this and other farms.

                        We must ensure that more member states in the EU protect mink from cruelty and death as well! Sign the petition to urge the European Union to ban fur farming of mink and other species!
