Barely anyone knows about this gorilla haven under threat.
Vladimir,
A small patch of forest in Cameroon is home to some of the most
critically endangered gorillas on Earth.
Deforestation and poaching are threatening to wipe these rare
apes out. But locals know exactly how to save them!
They’ve set up patrols to monitor deforestation and clearly
demarcate the forest as a protected area so that communities who live nearby
know to defend it from loggers.
It’s working – but with almost no funding, this sanctuary is
struggling to keep their ape-saving work alive. They’re urgently asking for
help so they can hire more eco-guards and pay for equipment like camera
traps to monitor deforestation and poaching threats deep in hard to reach
forest areas before the last gorilla disappears.
If all of us chip in, we can help beat the tide of deforestation
threatening to wipe out some of the world’s most endangered species.
Can you chip in to help wild places everywhere thrive?

Barely anyone knows about the Mengamé gorilla sanctuary in the
heart of the Congo Basin’s rainforest, even though its existence is vital to
saving some of the world’s rarest apes.
While the world’s attention is focused on protecting
better-known areas of the iconic Congo Basin, this overlooked 26,780 hectare
pocket is in dire need of help. It’s the sole protected area – and a beacon
of hope – in a sea of rainforest earmarked for logging. But deforestation is
already encroaching on this precious gorilla haven.
The sanctuary is rushing to defend it by working with local
villages to set up a community monitoring system, tracking deforestation
alerts with satellite data, patrolling the forest to monitor tree loss, and
alerting government conservation agencies if they find suspicious activity.
But the funds they had to start this genius project are running
out and if they can’t keep this ape-saving work going, the Mengamé sanctuary
could be slashed down, taking the gorillas with it.
With all of us chipping in, our partners could purchase vehicles
to access hard to reach areas in the remote sanctuary, hire more eco-guards
to patrol the forest and keep engaging with local communities to protect
their forest home tree by tree.
Critically endangered species are more at risk of extinction
than ever before. Can you chip in to help wild places everywhere thrive
again?
