Dear all,
My colleague, Prof. Yaron Ziv, at the Goldman-Sonnenfeldt School of Sustainability and Climate Change at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, and a team of scientists have released a new index of biodiversity conservation at the national level. This work adds to and complements the work of Balatoners including Mathis and the ecological footprint. Take a look at https://biodb.com/nci/ - and Yaron welcomes comments (Yaron Ziv <yziv at bgu.ac.il>)

Very best to all
John

  Dear Colleagues,
We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Nature Conservation Index (NCI), a tool designed to support global biodiversity conservation efforts and enhance the protection of vital ecosystems on a national level. Developed by Assaf Levy, Alex Slavenko, Uri Roll, Shai Meiri, and myself, this index promises to transform how we assess and enhance conservation strategies worldwide.

https://biodb.com/nci/ (see also Media Kit, and Executive Summary)
As we all know, biodiversity conservation is a critical global mission, essential for mitigating the impacts of climate, environmental, and biodiversity crises. Nations hold a responsibility to manage their species and habitats for the benefit of future generations. This requires informed decision-making based on comprehensive, high-quality data on species richness, extinction risks, and socio-political commitments to sustainability. However, up until now, there has been no universal index to measure and compare national responsibility to biodiversity conservation across the globe.

The NCI fills this gap by evaluating countries based on four key pillars of biodiversity management:

1.. Land Management (Area-based conservation): This pillar assesses the effectiveness of habitat protection, including metrics like protected area coverage, land use practices, and sustainable resource management. Improving land management and expanding protected areas can significantly enhance a nation's score.

2.. Threats to Biodiversity: This pillar reflects the risks facing species, including threat levels, declining populations, and the pressures from invasive species. By focusing on improving species protection and reducing threats, countries can demonstrate their conservation efforts' impact.

3.. Capacity and Governance: A country’s legal, financial, and societal commitment to biodiversity conservation is evaluated here. This includes management costs, conservation laws, and the level of public engagement, providing insight into national dedication to long-term conservation goals.

4.. Future Trends: Focusing on future policies and strategies, this pillar incorporates data from indices such as Yale’s Environmental Performance Index to gauge a country’s preparedness to address upcoming biodiversity and climate-related challenges.

By synthesizing these factors into one comprehensive metric, the NCI offers countries a clear and actionable tool for assessing their conservation performance. Not only does it highlight areas where improvements can be made, but it also provides a framework for international bodies to promote global sustainability—either by offering incentives for positive contributions or by identifying where more significant efforts are needed.

Importantly, the NCI solely relies on reliable and well-accepted information from organizational and institutional websites and real-time on-line databases, such as IUCN, WWF, IPCC, Yale, etc.

We believe that the NCI will play a transformative role in guiding nations toward more effective biodiversity conservation strategies, leading to better outcomes for species and ecosystems that are critical to Earth’s life-support systems.

We would be delighted to share more information with you about this index and discuss how it can be integrated into your work. Together, we can help shape a future where biodiversity thrives, and ecosystems are protected for generations to come.

Please send us your comments, constructive critics and helpful suggestions!

  Warm regards,

  — Yaron Ziv
