** The Land Belongs to Its Defenders

For generations, more than sixty Indigenous Amazonian communities have been 
living in concert with their ancestral lands in Cuatro Cuencas, a remote 
corner of Peru’s Loreto region, drawing their cultural lives and livelihoods 
from their rivers and forests.


But beneath their land lies Peru’s most important oil field. Oil activities 
started in 1970, and the situation continued to worsen in the year 2000 when 
the Peruvian government granted regional extraction rights to Dutch oil 
company Plus Petrol. Indigenous communities were not consulted prior to the 
onset of oil operations, and have not received compensation for the use of 
their lands. Instead, they have been poisoned for over two decades.


On March 21st, the people of Loreto will seek reparations in recognition of 
the harm caused by the Peruvian State and PlusPetrol. The right to a clean 
and healthy environment is a human right. Land rights are human rights. Join 
us as we #StandWithLoreto in their fight for environmental justice.
