YOU are part of a narrative shift that is actively undermining the plastic industry’s influence.
Hi Vladimir,
Have you heard of the Buy Nothing Project? Founded in 2013, Buy Nothing’s mission is to build community by connecting people through hyperlocal gifting, and reducing our impact on the environment. It is the world’s biggest gift economy – which means that everything shared on Buy Nothing is given freely.
We’re excited to bring you more inspiring stories like that of Buy Nothing in the next installment of Solving Plastic. With false solutions like incineration continuing to gain traction, it’s more important than ever that we focus on what really works to turn off the tap of plastic production. Often, those real solutions are ingenious community-based projects centered around concepts like reuse, refill, and redesign. Will you help us continue this series that looks into effective solutions that drive us away from plastic pollution, and towards real systems change?
The pilot series of Solving Plastic videos launched earlier this year, on Earth Day, and has garnered over one million views already. It’s an incredible feeling – YOU are part of a narrative shift that is actively undermining the plastic industry’s influence. In other words, when more of us know how to identify a real solution, the petrochemical industry’s misleading, greenwashing narratives that push false solutions will no longer work. Will you chip in today to help us continue producing Solving Plastic?
In the next installment, we’ll bring you exciting solutions beyond the U.S. Based in Chile, Algramo makes zero-waste shopping accessible to folks in middle- and lower-income neighborhoods by using vending machines to refill containers. Because delivery containers are reused, the product – necessities like rice, lentils, and beans – cost substantially less for each purchase. Helsinki-based RePack is onto the same idea of reusable packaging as an alternative for even online stores to reduce the environmental impact of shipping.
In the U.S., r.Cup brings single-use plastic solutions to the live events industry. Once again, it’s all about reuse – after every event, r.Cup collects, washes, sanitizes, inspects and reuses cups again and again. We’ll also feature Repair Lair, which specializes in repairing and selling second-hand outdoor clothing and gear. With the apparel industry churning out nylon and polyester (fibers made from plastic) designs so quickly, expecting us to buy and then trash, the simple act of repairing can be an act of resistance.
We can’t wait to launch these new profiles and we’re just about done with production on these impressive stories. Will you help us get over the finish line?
Thank you for being a part of the solution,
Michael O'Heaney and the Story of Stuff team
