Hundreds of Pilot Whales Died off of Australia's Coast. Prevent Future Tragedies Like This From Occurring! Sign Now Exactly two years ago, upwards of 450 pilot whales stranded themselves, dying on the shores of Tasmania, Australia. It was the single largest stranding incident in the region's history. And now, history is repeating itself. Just a few weeks ago, another huge group of pilot whales -- numbering around 230 individuals -- became stranded off the coast of Tasmania again. In distress and agony, they beached themselves, and most died. Luckily, a group of rescuers came together to help the few surviving pilot whales. They managed to bring around 30 animals back into the water, guiding them into deeper waters using local boats. The next step is preventing a future tragedy like this from ever happening again. The shores of Tasmania are particularly treacherous for pilot whales, with some known to be "whale traps." The shallow slopes along the beaches' ocean floors confuses the whales as they try to echolocate their way around. Once they become disoriented, the panicked animals call out for each other. Friends of friends of friends show up en masse to help the confused pilot whale -- leading to hundreds of animals becoming trapped together. And as climate change wrecks the oceans' ecosystems, wildlife like pilot whales must search further and further for food sources. That means they'll come closer and closer to Tasmanian beaches. So far, though, we aren't sure how to prevent future strandings -- except, of course, by halting and reversing climate change. But in the meantime, we must invest in research and technology that can help solve this problem! Sign the petition to urge Australian authorities to provide funding for scientists. It's imperative to learn how we can prevent future mass strandings. Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. One of the best ways to save whales in the future is by committing to research now. The Last Member of A Tribe in Brazil Has Died. Protect Indigenous Lands! Sign Now The last member of an Indigenous tribe in Brazil has tragically died, shining light on decades of genocide by colonists and the Brazilian government. The man, who was nicknamed the 'Man of the Hole,' survived for decades in isolation, remarkably evading contact and protecting himself from growing threats to tribal lands in the country. With his death comes the total loss of a language and culture. Very little is known about this man or his life, but human rights organizations believe that the rest of his tribe was brutally massacred in attacks by gunmen decades ago. In the 1970s, colonists and ranchers hired gangs of gunmen to literally slaughter the Indigenous people who stood in the way of extraction, ranching, and other forms of Amazon land "development." Currently, tribes hold a few reserves that the Land Protection Orders has preserved. But Bolsonaro's presidency has been rife with human rights abuses against Indigenous people. In fact, some Indigenous leaders called for courts to try the right-wing president for crimes against humanity. A recent investigation even showed that illegal airstrips are operating throughout the Amazon rainforest, allowing toxic mining to infiltrate dozens of Indigenous territories and one of the most important ecosystems in the world. Clearly, the country needs strong, permanent land preservation to respect tribal sovereignty and Indigenous rights. Hi Alexey, Have you seen the news? Two weeks ago, the President of the Pacific island nation, Vanuatu, His Excellency Nikenike Vurobaravu, stood up in the UN General Assembly and called for governments to negotiate a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. It aims to stop all new development of oil and gas, phase out existing fossil fuels production, and ensure workers are transitioned to a greener economy in a fair way [1]. This is an important moment, Alexey. For the very first time in history, a country has called for an international treaty to phase out fossil fuels. Vanuatu has taken an important step, and it gives us - people across the world - an opportunity to back them up with support and solidarity, so more nations will sign on to phase out fossil fuels. Can we count on you? It takes less than a minute to join the pledge. ?Every day, we are experiencing the debilitating consequences of the climate crisis and the world is now demanding more ambitious action? and we are measuring climate change not in degrees of Celsius or tons of carbon, but in human lives.? - President of Vanuatu, Nikenike Vurobaravu [2]. Coal, oil, and gas are causing the climate crisis ? yet to date, there are no international agreements to stop corporations and governments from opening new mines, building new pipelines, and greenlighting fracking projects ? and ensuring a bleak future for those at the forefront of the climate crisis. With COP27 global climate talks coming up in November, the world?s attention will turn to climate action again. Your signature in support of the Pacific island nation?s plea for a fossil-free future might help push a select number of other world leaders to pledge their support to the Treaty - and we'll make sure they feel the pressure. Alexey, sign the pledge and call on other nations to phase out fossil fuels right now. Time is running out. Let?s join our voices together, stand in solidarity with those at the frontlines of the climate crisis, and demand bold climate action from world leaders. Then, disgraced ex-President Trump took them off of the Endangered Species list in 2020, dealing a devastating blow to wolf populations across the U.S. That's why the recent discovery of this sweet wolf family in Oregon is so miraculous, and why wildlife authorities must do everything in their power to protect these wolf parents and their two pups! The wolf's role in North America's ecology is key -- they keep prey populations like deer in check while redistributing nutrients through hunting and movement patterns. Plus, they provide some of the only sources of food for scavengers that do not or cannot hunt. Sign Now Jina Amini -- also known as Mahsa Amini, after being forced to change her Kurdish name -- was only 22 years old when she and her family travelled from their local province to go shopping in Iran's capital city of Tehran. But along the way, the country's morality police noticed her and claimed she was wearing her mandatory head covering too loosely. Her family tried to explain they were strangers visiting, but authorities loaded her into a van and took her into custody. Supposedly they were going to "re-educate" her for 1 hour. Instead, eyewitnesses say she was beaten. Within an hour and a half, she fell into a coma. Then, several days later, she died. Ms. Amini's father says the government refused to let him see his daughter after she died, until the funeral. There, he found they'd wrapped her entire body to shield it, except for her face and feet -- which showed clear signs of bruising. He said, "I have no idea what they did to her." The building where police took her had CCTV, but Iranian officials have refused to reveal the full footage. Instead, they've released an edited version that cuts from daylight to nighttime in a matter of seconds. Meanwhile, Amini's cousin says eyewitnesses have told him she was beaten and tortured, before police hit her on the head -- leading her to collapse and enter a coma. Tens of thousands of Iranians from all over the country -- and millions of people all over the world -- have come together to protest her abuse and murder. Yet Iran's chief officials are more interested in arresting protesters than holding Amini's tormenters responsible. Already, police in Iran have arrested thousands of individuals for speaking out and protesting. They've cornered hundreds of students on the premises of an elite university in Tehran, trapping them and pelting them with bullets and batons. The nonprofit organization Iran Human Rights estimates that authorities have killed upwards of 75 civilians. It's obvious that Iran's government will not reveal the truth without tremendous pressure from its people, as well as outside pressure from the rest of the international community. Sign Now Carl the coyote roamed San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, becoming beloved by local residents. Over the course of 6 years, Carl became familiar with the city and grew to see its many parks as home. After all, there aren't many places in the crowded Bay Area where coyotes like him can live. He was friendly and comfortable being out-and-about in public. But authorities grew wary of Carl. And then, one summer, they shot him dead. The only thing Carl did "wrong" was adapt to his environment. Humans created a city, and surrounded it with suburbs, and left coyotes like him with nowhere to go. His crime was learning to adjust and get comfortable. After Carl became a new parent, having fathered a litter of his own pups, officials used that to their advantage. One evening, after the botanical gardens near his den had closed and visitors had dispersed, they played a recording that mimicked the sounds of coyote pups crying out in anguish. Carl came to investigate, in case one of the pups was his own. Instead, he met a bullet. Agents shot and killed him on sight. According to a spokesperson for the San Francisco Animal Care and Control, "It was heartbreaking for everyone involved. No one wanted this to happen." Unfortunately, under California state law, agents are not allowed to relocate coyotes. So even though Carl and his family might have enjoyed a peaceful existence in a more wild, rural area, far away from people, they couldn't get that chance. California authorities must change this law, in order to spare other animals this same cruel fate. Message-ID: UN Global Climate Action 10 October 2022 High Level Climate Champions Newsletter Climate Week NYC: Getting it Done The message of this year?s Climate Week in New York City was clear - Get it done. In this decisive decade for humanity, urgent climate action is non-negotiable. We must halve emissions by 2030, reverse biodiversity loss and enhance resilience for the millions already experiencing the devastating impacts of inaction. As Simon Stiell, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary said during this year?s United Nations General Assembly, ?Every single leader arrives from a country affected by climate impacts. We know it?s time to change course. Let?s stop the backsliding, regain momentum on climate change and get moving on the massive transformation that must happen this decade.? Against a backdrop of multiple interconnected crises around the world, this movement must include a rapid acceleration of adaptation action and resilience to prepare us for the future impacts we know are coming. Key to this is finance - both public and private. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) estimates that the annual adaptation costs in developing countries to be $115-330 billion by 2030. Of the $29.5bn annual climate finance committed in Africa in 2019 and 2020, only 39% ($11.4bn) was targeted at adaptation activities. From this, only 3% came from the private sector. Some non-State actors (NSAs) such as communities, cities and companies are stepping up to deliver economic, social and environmental benefits. But in order for these, often disparate actions to have meaningful impact, a set of milestones is needed to help direct these solutions into tangible outcomes by 2030. To that end, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions and NSA members of the Marrakech Partnership introduced the Adaptation and Resilience Breakthroughs. The Breakthroughs outline what key NSAs must do and by when, to reach the Race to Resilience?s global goal of making 4 billion vulnerable people more resilient by 2030. Whilst action by NSAs is vital to a net zero future, so too is an increase in ambition from states. At COP 26, 45 countries committed to make clean technologies the most affordable, accessible and attractive option in each major greenhouse gas emitting sector by 2030 under the Breakthrough Agenda. The inaugural Breakthrough Agenda Report, produced by the International Energy Agency (IEA), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, was launched during Climate Week NYC. It provides an assessment of progress towards each Breakthrough goal and a framework for tracking progress in the future. Its findings were presented and discussed at the Global Clean Energy Action Forum and the 13th Clean Energy Ministerial held in Pittsburgh, United States where leaders across all sectors were urged to engage in far greater international cooperation. As IEA Executive Director, Fatih Birol said, ?Without this collaboration, the transition to net zero emissions will be much more challenging and could be delayed by decades.? Both the Breakthrough Agenda and Adaptation and Resilience Breakthroughs set out how radical collaboration between both State and non-State actors and across sectors can be a catalyst in this vital decade of delivery. Nature Risk Is Investment Risk Nature is the planet?s greatest asset. Not just for its beauty and awe-inspiring wonder but the fact it?s integral to our survival. Nature is also fundamental to achieving net zero emissions. Without ending net deforestation and transforming the agriculture, food and land-use sectors by 2030, this won?t be possible. The health of ecosystems on which we and all other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever. This decline is eroding the very foundations of our livelihoods, health, food security and economies. Added to that, a report from the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions presented during Climate Week NYC, highlights what this could mean for the bottom line of some of the world?s most valuable food and agriculture companies, currently worth over US$2 trillion. The report finds these companies could lose up to a quarter of their value by 2030, with permanent sector-wide losses equivalent to the 2008 financial crash. Ignoring these alarm bells makes little business sense. According to the same report, a US$4.5 trillion opportunity awaits companies willing to support the sector?s transition to a net zero future. This latest analysis reinforces research published by Race to Zero earlier this year which revealed an urgent need for companies in the forest, land and agriculture sectors, to make progress on reducing deforestation. The study found that without much greater action, over 90% of these companies that have committed to net-zero, risk missing their targets. Progress on this issue was made at COP26. More than 100 global leaders pledged to halt and reverse deforestation and land degradation by the end of the decade. This was underpinned by US$19 billion in public and private funds to invest in protecting and restoring forests. In addition, more than 30 of the world's biggest financial companies promised to end investment in activities linked to deforestation. The plan also reinforced the important role of indigenous people in protecting their forested lands. But as with all voluntary action, governments and corporations need to deliver on their commitments from 2021 and act now to eliminate commodity-driven deforestation from their investment and lending portfolios. Turning the Tide on Shipping Shipping has been the backbone of global economies for thousands of years and today accounts for 90% of world trade. It?s also responsible for approximately 2% of global emissions. If it were a country, it would be on a par with the total emissions of Germany. The challenge to decarbonise shipping is huge. With around 60,000 vessels currently in operation emissions are expected to be 50% higher in 2050 than in 2018. To reach its goals of full decarbonization by 2050, the industry needs to move and move fast. The recent Climate Action in Shipping Report - Progress towards Shipping?s 2030 Breakthrough launched during Climate Week, is cause for some optimism. It finds there has been ?significant progress from industry, national governments and positive developments at the International Maritime Organization (IMO)?, but converting the commitments into concrete developments is vital for further progress. There are more than 200 shipping decarbonization pilot projects in the pipeline and progress has been made regarding bunkering and safety guidelines internationally. But now the key requirement is moving from pilots to Scalable Zero Emission Fuels (SZEF) production commitments, investments, and infrastructure developments. While the report acts as an honest stocktake of progress, these commitments and pledges must be turned into tangible actions and solutions. All eyes are on COP 27. Keeping Up With The Champions a.. With its marshes, lakes, woods and heathland, it is a place so rich in wildlife it has even been called Europe's Amazon. But situated just 15 miles from the border with Belarus, it is in a dangerous part of the world and Mr Stepanenko has every reason to be wary. It was across this border in February that Russia sent rockets, missiles and artillery shells, followed by an invading armoured column that got all the way south to the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv, before being driven back by Ukrainian defenders armed with the latest Western weapons. Dear Friends! Perhaps the most serious systemic environmental problem caused by the war is the disruption and weakening of international cooperation. In Russia, ideas about a ?hostile? West are gaining strength, while in Ukraine there are calls for the exclusion of the aggressor country from all international initiatives. Since the invasion, almost all intergovernmental treaties are perceived as invalid. Taking place in Egypt this November, the upcoming COP-27 (United Nations Climate Change conference or Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) will demonstrate how the conflict?s escalation will affect global climate policy. We will cover that topic on our website in the weeks ahead. Today, however, attention must be paid to the weakening of a number of international agreements, stemming not only from the Russian invasion, but also by the political events that preceded it. One of the most complex issues is the shared use of transboundary natural sites, such as rivers. Ukraine has taken the path of European integration at the level of values and law. However, roughly 70% of the shared water resource use is with Russia and Belarus, countries that have shown direct or indirect aggression. UWEC experts Valeriia Kolodezhna and Oleksiy Vasyliuk discuss approaches to systematic international cooperation with those countries. a.. Will river basins be torn apart by war? Another article by Oleksiy Vasyliuk is dedicated to the management of shared borderlands. This is a serious issue, given that significant areas of Europe?s Emerald Network are located along Ukraine?s border. These are unique biotopes where scientists seek to preserve valuable ecosystems and rare species. These same landscapes are the first to suffer as a result of military invasion. It is obvious that only joint work among these countries? scientific communities enables us to preserve the region?s nature in the form in which we know it. a.. We invited Dinara Ziganshina, Director of the Research Center of the International Water Commission for the Aral Sea Basin and Deputy Chairperson of the Committee for the Implementation of the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes to discuss how weakening international agreements could affect environmental activities both in Russia and neighboring countries. a.. International law and exceptional circumstances In the future, Russia may choose a path of isolationism and withdrawal from international agreements. Populist political forces are the voices behind that sort of rhetoric. Another country in the region has already started moving along this path. Belarus, or rather, its authoritarian regime, has been waging a lengthy war against its civil society while also trying to conceal its participation in the invasion of Ukraine. In 2021, almost all environmental organizations were liquidated by the government, including one of the oldest such organizations ? Ecodom. That organization protected the environmental rights of Belarusian citizens and used the Aarhus Convention to document and report violations of environmental rights. The Aarhus Convention protects the rights of people to a healthy environment. In response, the Aarhus Committee called on Belarus to restore liquidated environmental organizations and end the political persecution of environmental activists. Belarus? government reacted to this not only by issuing a refusal but announcing its intent to withdraw from the convention. We spoke with Ecodom representative Marina Dubina about the organization, political persecution of eco-activists, and the consequences for Belarus of withdrawing from international conventions. a.. Belarus eliminates independent environmental organizations and exits the Aarhus Convention: an interview with Ecodom?s Marina Dubina Persecution of environmental activists for their anti-war stance continues in both Belarus and Russia. One of those under pressure today is Russian physicist and nuclear power expert Andrey Ozharovsky. It was Belarusian persecution of Ozharovsky and other activists belonging to the Belarusian Anti-Nuclear Campaign in the 2010s that prompted Ecodom?s report of Aarhus Convention violations. a.. Russia prosecutes activist for citing IAEA report Most international agreements affect the environment in one way or another. A New Investigation Shows the Horrors of Chinchilla Fur Farming. Romania Must Ban this Cruelty Now! Sign Now The Humane Society International (HSI) recently captured undercover footage that documents just how many animals are needlessly suffering in Romania's abusive chinchilla farms. HSI's shocking investigation confirmed the worst fears of animal advocates around the world: that Romania's chinchilla fur farms are rampant with abuse against thousands of innocent animals. In the videos, chinchillas are seen trapped in tiny cages, all alone, despite being highly social creatures in the wild. Most cages have piles of excrement and many of the poor animals were literally trying to chew their way out of captivity. On top of that, female chinchillas are forced to endure some of the most gruesome and unnatural breeding tactics. Females are pushed into a nearly endless cycle of pregnancy, sometimes being forced to mate again only hours after giving birth. Handlers strap these same chinchillas into collars or braces that prevent them from escaping their cage during this forced mating. How can such a horrendously violent process still be legal in a European Union country? Luckily, following the release of the horrific footage, members of the country's National Liberal Party have drafted and submitted a bill to Parliament that would entirely ban mink and chinchilla farming in the country. Sign the petition now to tell Nicolae Ciuc??: end the violent, abusive industry of fur farming for good in Romania! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Nineteen other European nations have banned chinchilla fur farming, and it is time Romania does the same! Sign the petition. No Trees, No Rain Friday, October 21 at 12:15 pm ET What are we doing when we allow deforestation of the planet? How does this affect the small water cycles that have kept our planet moist and able to produce the foods we need? What relationship does deforestation have to extreme heat, drought, floods, hurricanes and other accelerating global climate phenomenon? Our distinguished guests have studied these questions for many years and have, between them, over 50 years of research, writing and publication experience. Living and growing up in pristine forests has added intuitive insights into the natural world for some. Botanist Jan Pokorny will explain the role of plants in distributing solar energy and in transpiration, while atmospheric physicist Anastassia Makarieva will present the biotic pump or moisture transport perspective. Theoretical physicist Andrei Nefiodov will shed light on how stopping Amazonian deforestation could help keep the hurricane threat at bay. Environmental reporter Hart Hagan will be the moderator for this critically important and timely event. No Trees, No Rain Friday, October 21 at 12:15 pm ET Register here! Droughts and flash floods are becoming a new normal in our warming world. What changed? Our landscapes are losing water as people alter the environment, cut trees, drain wetlands, and use chemicals that destroy the soil. And we?re feeling the heat. By learning from nature, we can improve the climate where we live. We can learn from plants and trees which provide air conditioning for the Earth. They help drive the water cycle, tame damaging wind and rain storms and even address giant heat islands over the Midwest and forest fires. Climate scientist Anastassia Makarieva of the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute and botanist Jan Pokorn? (co-author of the New Water Paradigm) will discuss these issues and answer audience questions. Dr. Makarieva's research colleague and co-author, theoretical physicist Andrei Nefiodov, will join the discussion. Regenerative reporter and ecological consultant Hart Hagan will moderate the discussion. We hope to see you there! But there is still hope: Amal has appealed to the verdict, and the court could overturn the sentence and save her life. Stand with Amal against her stoning death sentence Amal's trial was a sham: she was even denied a lawyer to defend her after reports that the police obtained a confession illegally. Amal had moved back home after separating from her husband -- now she's facing brutal execution for adultery. Three years ago, women were at the forefront of the Sudanese revolution. But today they are still denied equal rights and participation in public life. And as shocking as it is, Amal's case is part of a wider attack on women?s rights following the military coup that interrupted Sudan?s democratic revolution. We can?t stand idly by as Sudan?s military tries to bring back the country to the dark times of Omar al-Bashir?s brutal ultra-conservative dictatorship. The new rulers of Khartoum are trying to normalize their relations with big powers like the United States -- and massive outrage from Avaaz members around the world could become a thorn in their side they can?t ignore. From Khartoum to Kabul and Washington, solidarity is how we fight back. The Taliban Won't Let Girls Go to School. This Harms Everyone. Sign Now A little over a year ago, the Taliban took power in Afghanistan. Since then, human rights violations against women and girls have skyrocketed. Afghan girls ages 12 to 18 are still not allowed to attend school. It's estimated that more than a million girls have been banned from attending high school over the past year, according to the United Nations. This statistic alone is a tragedy, but it also creates a deep power and class imbalance for women and girls. Research shows that a core component of eradicating global poverty is giving girls access to education. In addition to the higher risk of poverty, uneducated girls are also at greater risk of child marriage, violence, and prone to diseases. It's imperative that the International Criminal Court (ICC) take action against the Taliban for the harm it's doing to women and girls by restricting their access to education. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 21, 2022 Constructive Action Each year, Earth Island Institute, which publishes the Journal, honors upcoming leaders in environmental activism through its Brower Youth Awards. On Tuesday, I was lucky enough to attend the awards ceremony for this year?s six activists, held in Berkeley, California, where Earth Island is headquartered. This was the first live BYA ceremony since the pandemic, so the small theater in which it was held ? the Freight & Salvage ? was abuzz with the energy of both an awards program and a reunion, as people danced to music, hugged, smiled and gave raucous rounds of standing ovations. Each youth leader is inspiring in their own way, and you can read more about them here. What struck me most is that their projects are both manageable and inspirational at once. Take for example the work of Raghav Kalyanaraman. His project, Eagles for the Environment, restores prairie ecosystems in north Texas. This requires intensive labor, including the painstaking raking of non-native grass litter so that native seeds can be planted. It is ecologically important work, as prairies sequester more carbon dioxide than forest do. ? but it is also important community work, undertaken acre by acre by a small group of dedicated people. This is the kind of work we should all undertake, inside the knowledge of interdependence and interconnection. I have been reading Ruha Benjamin?s Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want, which urges us to ?foster a deep-rooted interdependence, not as some cheery platitude, but as a guiding ethos for regenerating life on this planet.? Justice work, Benjamin says, is rooted in connection, ?not just to other living things, but to those yet born.? It is the work of world building. The Brower Youth Award winners are engaged exactly this kind of work. This construction in action builds from one person to the next, one project to the next. These projects then start to interlock, to rebuild the world. We need more of it, and we need everyone to take part in it. I would encourage each of you this week to take a look at your backyard, your neighborhood, your community, and find a place to build something, or restore something, or simply to pitch in where something is being built. The right ethos starts there, and, as any of these young leaders will tell you, it matters. Trump's Border Wall Is Disorienting Animals and Destroying the Environment. Biden Must Help Wildlife Now. Sign Now When Donald Trump's administration began construction on their infamous and unnecessary border wall along the U.S.'s southern edge, wildlife conservationists were worried. They knew this would hurt animals and the fragile, important habitats in that region. In fact, scientists are now warning of possible "ecocide" if the U.S. and Mexican governments do not quickly establish corridors for wildlife to freely roam between the borders. What they mean is that, this ecosystem is so delicate, it could collapse if the situation does not improve. Yet sadly, U.S. President Biden and Mexican President L?pez Obrador still haven't done enough to reduce the negative impacts of Trump's disastrous wall. Without wildlife corridors, animals are left cut off from important breeding and grazing grounds, as well as their seasonal migration routes. Thousands of animals use these land paths to find the mates and nutrients their species depend on. Confused, lost, and disoriented, they have no way of meeting their survival needs. Cameras that conservationists have installed show bears, boars, deer, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, a type of raccoon called coatimundis, and more trying to roam freely as they once did -- only to come across the insurmountable wall obstacle in their paths. One heartbreaking video shows a family of wild boars that was so desperate to find water on the other side, they searched for a full five hours to find a way around the wall. On top of that, Trump's wall construction destroyed landscapes and ecosystems that wildlife depend on. From blasting mountaintops, to chopping down the foliage that animals feed and live on, construction has meant decimating whole habitats. But the Earth and wildlife shouldn't have to pay the price for humans' decisions to erect land barriers. These are animals' lands and homes, too. It's imperative that President Joe Biden's administration work together with President Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador to protect wildlife. Sign the petition to urge Presidents Biden and L?pez Obrador to create wildlife corridors along the U.S.-Mexico border! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Wildlife cannot make sense of human geopolitics and arbitrary walls erected on their grazing and migratory lands. Sign the petition. I would like to spend some time after the Summit is over to explore topics of common interest. Yes, we would like to highlight what is happening in Central Asia and your Declaration. The best time to do that would be on oct 24 from 8:30 to 10:00 Pacific time which would be 21:30 to 23:00 Almaty time. Late for you but the other options are in the middle of the night your time. Would this just be yourself presenting? Interpretation going to be needed? Does Zoom work good for you there? How much time would you like? It is a 90-minute period. We like Q&A as part of it and discussion. Perhaps I can get Chandrakadesh Biradar to attend your session for dialogue. He runs the India region for CIFOR-ICRAF and has done much of Asia. Let's work out the details. perhaps we could have a Zoom call between now and the summit to discuss this? Democratic, participatory and dynamic. * We currently have 60 presenters listed on our website. Most of them are confirmed but we haven?t been in touch with some of you recently. * If you are receiving this email but cannot present, please let me know asap so we can take you off the website. * Any presenters who have not confirmed by October 12 will be taken off the website. * Almost all the presenters listed on our website are for the North American program. We have yet to add the speakers for the Africa, Europe and South/Central America programs. * 21 people have filled out our Speaker Forms but many of you have not. Please do so if you can. It really helps us. * Minimally, we need the title of your presentation, phone number and which Workshop Session period(s) work for you. Here are the periods you have to choose from for a pre-scheduled presentation. The presentations should include Q&A and discussion (if time allows). We need to make sure that all the presenters know how to get into the Summit zoom rooms and operate them. My guess is that some of you are experts at this and others are not. Several layers to the zoom participation: 1. Presenters have to be registered as a speaker. If you are listed on our speaker page that means we have already designated you as a speaker and you can log in using the Speaker Login button. You have to enter your name and email and then you will be emailed a verification code number that you will have to enter (hopefully just the first time). 2. Presenters who want to attend any sessions other than their own presentation will also have to register as a participant. You can register from the website. 3. All the presenters who do pre-scheduled workshops will be made Hosts for that session and be able to run the Zoom controls. At the beginning of your session ask if anyone in the room has gone through our moderator training and you can make them a co-host and they can help you run the zoom controls if need be. 4. We will do several training for presenters on using zoom and signing in. You will be notified when these trainings are scheduled. 5. We will send all speakers their session's zoom url which all they have to do is click at the correct time. It will be a Cvent official email. Your session?s zoom room will be open to you 10 minutes ahead of time so you can test your audio, etc. Part of the training will be what tests are good to do, and steps to do them. 6. We will have tech people on standby if there are any problems. Email: tech at globalearthrepairfoundation.org I hope all that makes sense. I am just learning myself. All of you can nominate sessions in the unconference and Action Plan sessions. We have turned down some proposals for pre-scheduled presentations, but they can all fit into the unconference scheduling during the event. Please participate in as much of the summit as you can. * Presenters from Europe for the North American program can speak in our early am sessions which will be evening in Europe. * Presenters from Australia or East Asia for the North American program can speak in our end-of-the-day sessions which correspond to 7:00 or 7:30 am in the Sydney, Australia time zone. Please help us spread the word. Announce the Summit to your networks and email lists. Look for a Media Packet on the website with graphics, posters, quotes, press releases and so forth that you can utilize for publicity. Should be up by October 7. The Alliance is envisioned as a collaborative platform to rally political momentum and trigger actions that support countries, cities, and communities to enable this shift and significantly reduce their vulnerability, impact and exposure to extreme drought. President of the Government of Spain Pedro S?nchez P?rez-Castej?n announced at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2022 that creating the alliance is ?a specific solution for the United Nations? to the impacts of climate change. ?Together with Senegal, we will support the creation of an ?International Alliance for Drought Resilience? to promote innovation, technology transfer and the mobilization of resources to combat drought in countries exposed to this threat,? President S?nchez said. President Macky Sall of Senegal said ?When the State is in danger, when it is destabilized in any way, the foundations of community fracture making way for chaos. We all ? governments, citizens and civil society ? have an obligation not to saw off the branch we are sitting on.? ?I am thinking of the environmental peril, in particular global warming, drought and desertification, and weather-related natural disasters. The State of the Climate in Africa 2020 estimates that by 2030, 118 million Africans will be at risk of extreme poverty due to a combination of sea level rise, flooding, drought and other related phenomena,? President Sall added. According to the latest Drought in Numbers report compiled by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), droughts have increased in frequency by 29 percent since 2000, with some 55 million people affected every year. Recent droughts in Australia, Europe, western United States, Chile, the Horn and Southern Africa, show that no country is immune to drought. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projects that droughts will be more frequent, severe and last longer. Climate change bears much of the responsibility, but so does how we manage our land and water resources. The IPCC estimates that three out of every four people in the world will be living in drier, water-scare conditions by 2050. Helping countries, cities and communities to build drought resilience presents an opportunity to significantly reduce the high social and economic costs. This includes the loss of life, livelihoods and biological diversity, water and food insecurity, and disruption in the energy, transportation and tourism sectors, as well as forced migration, displacement, and conflicts over scarce resources. We unite governments, scientists, policymakers, private sector and communities around a shared vision and global action to restore and manage the world?s land for the sustainability of humanity and the planet. Much more than an international treaty signed by 197 parties, UNCCD is a multilateral commitment to mitigating today?s impacts of land degradation and advancing tomorrow?s land stewardship in order to provide food, water, shelter and economic opportunity to all people in an equitable and inclusive manner. It Is Time for Norway to Permanently Ban Commercial Whaling! Sign Now Whalers in Norway recently slaughtered more than 580 whales during the 2022 whaling season, the highest number in the past six years. The whales most often die brutally, after being shot with grenade harpoons. This causes immense pain and suffering before the great animal finally dies -- sometimes as long as half an hour later. These marine mammals are vital parts of their marine ecosystems, and are incredibly intelligent creatures that can develop complex relationships and feel pain. So why does commercial whaling -- which is literally just the practice of hunting whales to sell their meat for a profit -- still exist in Norway? Nearly four decades ago, in 1986, the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling. In that time, whaling has generally decreased worldwide. Yet Norway has remained persistent in its pursuit of whale flesh. In less than four decades, Norwegian whalers have killed more than 15,000 whales. However, fewer and fewer Norwegians are eating whale meat. Instead, young people in Norway increasingly favor protections to save whales! Norway is one of only three countries in the entire world that allows commercial hunts, and it is time its government commits to a more humane and sustainable future. Sign the petition now to tell the Norwegian government: join the international community and finally ban commercial whaling! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. There is no good reason to kill so many whales when the overwhelming majority of people in the country do not even want to eat them. Sign the petition. Today, the main site of concern in Ukraine is the Dnipro hydropower cascade (whose reservoirs supply two-thirds of the country?s population). A breach of just one of the cascade?s dams could provoke a humanitarian catastrophe, loss of life, and large-scale destruction. I am so happy and humbled by this journey that we?ve taken together. You are one of over ten thousand people from over a hundred different countries who took part in our week of action against EACOP. Now, on our final day together, we?re going back to Africa and to the people who are most critical in the fight against this pipeline, and most at risk from its impacts - the people in Uganda and Tanzania. Today, I?m asking you to join us for the world premiere of an independent documentary, "EACOP: A Crude Reality". Watch and share the powerful story of the local resistance to Total Energies' mega oil pipeline. Watch the premiere now Local communities in East Africa are not only bearing the brunt of the climate crisis, but they suffer firsthand from the disastrous consequences of a new breed of colonialism - the corporate one. It?s the people in Uganda and Tanzania that are being kicked off their land, whose livelihoods and water supply are being endangered by oil spills. And who are being attacked, harassed and intimidated when they speak out. [1] It?s their stories the world needs to hear most. So please, set aside 40 minutes to watch this short documentary today. It?s our biggest ask yet, but educating ourselves and sharing the stories of our friends in Uganda and Tanzania is so important in the fight against Total and its destructive pipeline. You?ve already done so much. I hope I can count on you to do this one last thing and watch and share this film with your friends today. Congress Must Finally Protect Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros from Slaughter and Captivity Sign Now Wild horses and burros are iconic, sacred symbols of the American West. Yet they continue to be rounded up, kept in horrific and unsafe captivity, and slaughtered en masse by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Over the course of several decades, the Bureau's terrible management practices have killed millions of wild, free horses. This is despite the fact that some laws are already supposed to safeguard these beautiful animals. To make matters worse, the Bureau is committing these horrors using taxpayer money. The vast majority of taxpayers oppose the cruel and wasteful mismanagement of these majestic creatures, and the BLM's practices need to change now. Luckily, Congress is considering a new piece of legislation that would correct these egregious errors. The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Protection Act of 2022 would mark a major departure from decades of gruesome mismanagement of the wild animals. The bill prioritizes humane management, habitat restoration, and increased transparency on the programs overall. The act even paves the way for strategic partnerships with non-profit organizations and American veterans. This would be an amazing step forward toward more ethical and humane treatment of all wild horses and burros in the American West! It is time for Congress to fix this tragic problem and pass the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Petition Act of 2022. Sign the petition to help us tell lawmakers that they must protect these iconic animals now! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S.
