A better way to protect biodiversity: strengthening indigenous rights!
            Dear friends of the rainforests,

One million animal and plant species could become extinct if we don’t take urgent action to protect biodiversity. In December, the UN Conference on Biological Diversity (COP15) is expected to address this crisis by calling for 30 percent of the planet’s surface to be protected worldwide by 2030.

This can be problematic because of an approach called “fortress conservation” – the strict separation of humans and nature, often enforced by armed rangers. Human rights violations and even killings are not uncommon in such protected areas.

But conservation and human rights do not need to be mutually exclusive: Studies have shown forests on the ancestral land of indigenous communities to be in better condition than those in conventional protected areas: Indigenous people are truly the best guardians of the environment. Guaranteeing indigenous land rights would thus be a huge win for both biodiversity and human rights.

Please sign our petition and speak out for stronger rights for indigenous people in the run-up to COP15!

                  TAKE ACTION
                  Thanks for being involved,

                  John Hayduska

              Success
Speaking out makes a difference: investors shun TotalEnergies’ oil pipeline
Fossil fuel giant TotalEnergies is having trouble finding banks and insurance companies willing to partner in its planned EACOP pipeline in eastern Africa. 24 major banks and 18 insurance companies have stated that they will not support the project in Uganda and Tanzania. Protests by the worldwide StopEACOP network, including Rainforest Rescue, are playing a key role in this success.
