You're invited to join World BEYOND War for our annual conference, #NoWar2022: Resistance & Regeneration, coming up this July 8-10! This year's event will be held virtually through the Zoom Events platform, a robust online conference experience that includes online panels, discussion sessions, workshops, virtual networking, and expo booths.

Across 3 days from July 8-10, we will explore the unique theme of both "resistance" and "regeneration", asking the question: As we resist the institution of war worldwide, from crippling sanctions and military occupations to the network of military bases that encircle the globe, how can we simultaneously “regenerate,” building the alternative world that we want to see based on nonviolence and a culture of peace?

                              Register for #NoWar2022!

                              Schedule

                              Day 1: Friday, July 8, 2022
Day 1 on July 8 will begin with a live performance by modern folk singer-songwriter Samara Jade and a welcome address from World BEYOND War chapters around the world. We'll hear opening remarks from the Save Sinjajevina campaign in Montenegro, an ongoing effort to block a NATO military training ground & preserve the Balkans’ biggest mountain grassland. Save Sinjajevina representatives will Zoom in to the virtual conference and there will be opportunities to support the in-person actions happening in Montenegro during the week of the conference. We'll also hear from WBW Board Member Yurii Sheliazhenko, based in Ukraine, who will provide an update on the current crisis in Ukraine, situating the conference within the larger geopolitical context and highlighting the importance of anti-war activism at this time.

Day 1 will conclude with discussion sessions on "Models for the Just Transition," which offer a glimpse into what’s possible by exploring different alternative models and what’s needed for the just transition to a green & peaceful future. Sessions include: Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP) with John Reuwer of World BEYOND War and Charles Johnson of Nonviolent Peaceforce; Public Banking with Rickey Gard Diamond and Marybeth Gardam; the Transition Movement with Jul Bystrova, co-founder of the Inner Resilience Network; and more.

                              Day 2: Saturday, July 9, 2022
Day 2 on July 9 will begin with a panel on economic conversion with Miriam Pemberton of the Peace Economy Transitions Project. Miriam is an expert on how we can rethink warfare economies and make the transition away from arms manufacturing. Next, we'll hear traditional Montenegrin music from the Save Sinjajevina campaign, and then break out into 3 different workshops:

a.. Workshop: How to Block a Military Training Ground & Preserve the Balkans’ Biggest Mountain Grassland: An Update from the Save Sinjajevina Campaign, led by Milan Sekulović
b.. Workshop: How to Demilitarize & “Peacify” Education with Phill Gittins of World BEYOND War and Carmen Wilson of Demilitarise Education
                                c.. Training: Nonviolent Communication Skills
We'll conclude Day 2 with a panel on Divestment & Reinvestment, which will concretely explore how to divest public and private dollars from extractive industries like weapons and fossil fuels, and at the same time, how to rebuild the just world we want through doable reinvestment strategies that prioritize community needs. Featuring Shea Leibow of CODEPINK, Nadira Foster of Divest Ed, and Britt Runeckles of Towards a People’s Endowment.

                              Day 3: Sunday, July 10, 2022
Day 3 on July 10 will begin with a panel on "Resisting & Regenerating in the Aftermath of War, Sanctions, and Violent Conflict" featuring unique stories of those who have direct experience in the face of conflict and how they have used regenerative strategies like farming and permaculture to push back against a culture of violence and model the just, peaceful, and green world we want. Following the panel, we will break out into 3 workshops:

a.. Workshop: How to Shut Down & Transform a Military Base Site with Thea Valentina Gardellin, a spokesperson for the No Dal Molin, a grassroots movement against American military bases in Vicenza, Italy
b.. Workshop: Demilitarizing the Police & Alternative Policing Models with David Swanson of World BEYOND War and other speakers TBA

c.. Workshop: How to Challenge Mainstream Media Bias & Promote Peace Journalism with Jeff Cohen of FAIR.org, Steven Youngblood of the Center for Global Peace Journalism, and Dru Oja Jay of The Breach. Modeling the conference theme of “resistance and regeneration,” this workshop will begin with a media literacy primer, vis-à-vis FAIR.org’s techniques to expose and critique mainstream media bias. Then we will lay out a framework for the alternative — principles of counternarrative storytelling from a peace journalism perspective. We will conclude with a discussion of practical applications of these principles, such as through independent media outlets like The Breach, whose mission is focused on “journalism for transformation.”
