This petition was launched on our YouMove platform by CEE Bankwatch Network.

Imagine overnight a giant highway is set up through your home. The ground 
shakes you awake as strangers invade your garden with machinery that leaves 
scars even time cannot heal. The landscape is gone forever. This is the 
reality for the local residents of the Neretva Valley in Bosnia and 
Herzegovina right now.

The Neretva Valley is a habitat for rare endangered fish and bird species. 
It is also an important source of food for large number of people. [1] And 
still European banks are using our public money to finance a giant highway 
that will rip through the area and destroy it.

Local people are already rising up. [2] But they need our help to turn this 
into an European story. Together we are able to amplify their voices and 
bring pressure from across Europe.

Now we have a chance to do just that - tomorrow an important bank backing 
the highway has a key meeting. Our partner Bankwatch will be there. If we 
can arm them with the voices of thousands of us speaking up for nature, we 
can stop the highway.

So, will you add your voice to those of us already standing up for the lives 
of birds and fish now?

Our community has come behind petitions like this, set up by local 
organisations, many times and won! Hundreds of thousands of us signed a 
petition that has stopped a mega-port in Tenerife. It threatened the only 
whale heritage site in the European Union. Thanks to our work together the 
home to more than 75 protected species including whales, dolphins, sharks 
and turtles is now safe. [3]

Concerns about environmental impacts of highway in Neretva Valley are 
growing. The threats to cultural heritage are being raised by more and more 
local people and cultural figures. They are doing all they can to demand the 
project is halted. But they cannot do it alone. The time has come to go 
bigger and bring outside pressure on the banks funding this destruction. We 
can show them Europe is watching and their reputation is on the line 
everywhere.

Will you answer their calls and take action together to protect the nature 
of the Neretva Valley?

            Yes - we must protect biodiversity in Europe!
