A small group of peace advocates received surprisingly an invitation from the Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto on April 22 to discuss the letter. After the audience it was clear to us that Finland does not intend to implement the plan for a new OSCE Summit. Minister Haavisto (the Greens) accused Russia of not allowing the participation of the free press and NGO:s and found that unacceptable. The following day, the Green delegation unanimously issued a positive statement on NATO membership and Minister Haavisto stated that Finland would work for peace and disarmament within NATO. At the audience, minister Haavisto did not answer our question as to whether he thought it possible that Russia would attend an OSCE conference in Finland if Finland applied for NATO membership. Since we after the audience knew that Finland has put plans for a summit on hold we now hope for organisations to push for the conference to be held in Austria or Switzerland. Unfortunately, the situation looks pretty hopeless. It is clear that Finland will submit the NATO membership application in mid-May and Sweden will most likely follow suit. But if we could bring together a group of organisations that would urgently push the issue of an OSCE conference in Austria or Switzerland, we would at least show that we haven't given up. Any ideas on how we could still influence this extremely threatening development are extremely welcome. Many well-known prominent persons from the western world warn of the consequences for world peace if Finland joins NATO. Pls see links below. We hope for an intensive cooperation for as long as it is still possible. Ulla Kl?tzer and Lea Launokari - Women for Peace ? He also says that president Zelensky has spoken about this a number of times and the only ones that have not spoken about this is the west, and Joe Biden in particular. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5qCOZkQ-R4 2) Jeffrey Sachs, Columbia University's Center for Sustainable Development Director Sachs: Sanctions will not change the shape of the war in Ukraine At about 4 minutes and forward ? Sign the petition to stop destructive silver mining projects now. Sign the petition For nearly a decade, the Indigenous Xinka people, living near the Escobal silver mine in Guatemala, have peacefully opposed the mine -- protecting their lands and waters from destruction. For their resistance, Xinka community members have been killed and jailed. The silver lining was that they stopped one of the most contentious silver mines in Latin America mid operation. Meanwhile, the same mining company that is operating in Guatemala, Pan American Silver, is also trying to build a mine in Argentina. It is claiming that the proposed site is on ?no man?s land?, completely dismissing the presence of Mapuche Tehuelche Indigenous people that live on the land, and steamrolling a massive 20 year resistance against mining. Pan American Silver?s biggest meeting of the year takes place in early May and we want to deliver a massive petition with tens of thousands of SumOfUs members' signatures to show solidarity with local Guatemalan and Argentine affected communities. Will you sign the petition calling on Pan American Silver to listen to the local community for its annual meeting? The Xinka people have demanded the right to free, prior and informed consent and self determination over mining in their territory for over a decade. Their demand for respect for Xinka people's rights has been fierce but peaceful and it has come at a cost: there has been a loss of lives and dozens have been jailed arbitrarily. Yet they came together in a show of strength and won an important victory -- in 2017, the Xinka initiated two resistance camps to stop all traffic to the mine, which continue today. Shortly after, Guatemalan courts recognized that the Guatemalan government discriminated against the Xinka and failed to consult them, and the mine was suspended. Sign the petition calling on Pan American Silver and the Governments of Argentina and Guatemala to respect the rights of indigenous communities. We know if we come together, we can stop these destructive mining operations in Latin America. A few months ago, the governor of Argentina?s Chubut province was forced to repeal a law allowing mining that would have directly benefited Pan American Silver after six consecutive days of massive protests and roadblocks. And if we act now, we can demand Pan American Silver and the Guatemalan government respect the consent of the Xinka people. Banks Are Funding Our Climate Destruction. They Must Divest from Fossil Fuels Now! Sign Now Every few months, new scientific reports remind us again and again that we, as a collective species, are about to push the Earth past the climate tipping point ? from which there is no return. One of the largest contributors to climate change is the fossil fuel industry, which creates horrifying levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Yet some of the most powerful players in the world, including Big Banks, are refusing to take a step back from this dirty industry. The 2021 Banking on Climate Chaos report reveals that JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America are the four worst banking institutions because of their heavy investments in fossil fuels. Apparently, they're ready and willing to throw the fate of our entire planet to the winds. Luckily, not all banks are determined to wreck our planet's future. Some have explicitly decided not to invest in fossil fuels, including BNP Paribas bank and many community banks as well as credit unions. Now, even the Big Four are starting to feel the "heat." Recently, each of these most-dirty banks pledged to divest from coal ? though not from other fossil fuels. Meanwhile, shareholders in multiple giant oil corporations have been revolting, forcing companies like ExxonMobil and Chevron to finally start addressing their climate change contributions. It's time for an epic wake-up call in corporate financial America. Sign the petition to demand that banking institutions fully divest from all fossil fuels, including oil and gas supplies! Delta Airlines Was Supposed to Transport Five Million Honeybees. It Let Them Die on a Hot Tarmac Instead. Sign Now Pesticides have been mass-murdering bees all over the world. As a result, farms, nurseries, and orchards in many places rely on commercial shipments of bees in order to pollinate their crops. Otherwise, we wouldn't have apples, oranges, blueberries, watermelons, almonds, and more. Delta Airlines is fairly familiar with this situation. Many times in the past, it has handled shipments of millions of bees, heading from Sacramento, California to beekeepers in Anchorage, Alaska. But last month was different. This time, Delta neglected the pollinators to death. It abandoned crates filled with five million pollinators to starve and bake to death on an airport tarmac ? in hot Atlanta, Georgia. The whole catastrophe started when Delta rerouted the bees. Then, it delayed their travel to the correct destination for days. And finally, it ignored their care instructions. Delta was fully aware from previous shipments that the bees had to be kept cool, with temperature control, and to have easy access to their food sources. Yet personnel stacked the bees' hundreds of crates out directly in the Atlanta sun, where it was upwards of 80 degrees outside ? far too hot for the little captive creatures. Then, the airline just left them there. East Coast beekeepers tried to rush to the bees' rescue, but it was already too late. By the time the first helper arrived, a full one-quarter of the bees had died. By the end of the day, very few remained alive at all. Those that survived found new homes with Georgia-based beekeepers and nurseries. Delta has supposedly apologized to the Alaska beekeeper who coordinates such shipments, and she is filing a reimbursement claim with the corporation after its epic, deadly mishandling. But that's not sufficient: millions of lives have still been lost. The pollinators of the world need Delta to take real responsibility. Delta must immediately commit to helping bees by donating to bee-protecting projects! Sign the petition if you agree. Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Climate Change Is Bad for Business, and Vice Versa. A New Rule Would Require Companies to Disclose Just How Bad Sign Now The planet is literally on fire, and 'protecting the economy' is the classic excuse to dodge urgently needed climate action and reform. But in a twist of irony, climate change is bad for business, too. Luckily, the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) is stepping up with a new rule proposal that would require companies to disclose how global warming affects their business, along with how those businesses contribute to climate change in the form of emissions data. Supply chain issues, public health concerns, agricultural disruptions, and disturbances to infrastructure are all becoming increasingly common as the climate changes -- and these all affect a company's bottom line. Having to disclose these potential issues, along with how a business is contributing to the climate crisis, is sure to push companies in the right direction because money is the ultimate motivator. Investors can use this information to choose the most sustainable, stable businesses to get behind -- pushing companies to develop green, secure practices and policies. The comment period is currently open for members of the public to vocalize their support for the new rule. Sign the petition now to tell the SEC: monitoring climate impacts is vital! We look forward to reading and discussing this important book with you! About the Book: This collection of articles published between 2010-2021 charts a quest for peace and justice for all on our planet?humans and the web of life, some 3 ? billion years old, in which we live. These pieces were conceived in a time of deepened social and economic inequalities, expanding weapons budgets, and the Earth reaching tipping points?points of no return?from existential climate crisis and species extinction. Many of our crucial local, national, and international issues are included here. Among these are nuclear power and weapons; the climate and biodiversity crises; the Covid-19 pandemic; militarism and war; veterans; the possibilities of peace; international collaborations; and the pursuit of sexual, racial, and economic justice. Though chapters are separated by topic, they are not conceived in silos. Rather they reside in the web of interrelated politics, the environment, economics, and all manifestations of political and social justice and injustice?the dimensioned world in which we live our lives. I keep these words of Vaclav Havel, playwright, dissident, and first president of the Czech Republic, nearby as a realistic beacon for living with hope in the midst of the assaults on peace, on justice for all, on democracy, and on the planet that sustains our life. ?The more unpromising the situation in which we demonstrate hope, the deeper that hope is. Hope?is not the same as joy that things are going well?or?headed for early success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good.? Those who work for good?to save public forests; to save the lives of Covid patients; who speak out against the futility of war, those who strive to create a future of human rights and the fullest justice for girls and women and people of color, and who labor to eliminate nuclear weapons?are a lifeline through this collection, culminating in the final piece, Hope. This book is brand new in 2022. Here's an early review: "Pat Hynes inspires each of us to act. Woven throughout brilliantly illustrated facts showing the damage we have inflicted on each other and our Earth, is the voice of an activist. She shows, by example, that actions to reverse inequality, to curtail climate change, to end war, can imbue us with hope -- hope which leads us to even greater commitment to create a just society." --Dr. Evelyn Murphy, former Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts; Founder and Director, The Wage Project Here's an excerpt from the foreword: "Pat Hynes' understanding of the wide range of issues covered in the following chapters is not only guided by her scientific expertise and training as a researcher but also, and very importantly, by compassionate intelligence. Her empathic intelligence shines through whether the subject she wrote about concerns the plight of violence-and poverty-battered families fleeing across national borders (including ours), or the U.S. government?s unbelievably wasteful and extravagant use of its citizens? tax dollars for weapons and war, or the plight of fire-ravaged forests and communities due to runaway global warming, or the deep physical and psychological/moral scars suffered by U.S. and other countries? military veterans, or the fate of women and girls everywhere who, she makes clear, always bear the heaviest brunt of poverty, violence, food scarcity, and sexual exploitation. "But, lest you think you?ll come away from reading these essays feeling numb, hopeless, and depressed, please don?t worry: despite the gravity of the problems she analyzes, there is a clear stream of hopefulness that runs through all of her essays, based on her descriptions of positive, real-time actions, initiatives, and actual accomplishments on the part of ordinary citizens and a few (though still too few!) enlightened elected leaders worldwide. Be sure to read her spirit-uplifting essay, 'Hope.'" -- Randy Kehler, Executive Director of the National Nuclear Weapons Freeze Camapign; Conscientious Objector, Vietnam War; Founder, Traprock Center for Peace and Justice. Dear friends of peace On April 22 a small group of peace advocates handed over to the Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto (green party) a letter to the Finnish president, government and members of parliament asking the President to fulfill his earlier intention to host a new OSCE Summit in 2025. The letter also expressed the wish that Finland (and Sweden) should not apply for NATO membership before such a conference has taken place. Russia would most certainly not attend a summit in Helsinki if Finland applies for NATO-membership. After the audience it was clear to us that Finland does not intend to implement the plan for a new OSCE Summit. The following day, the Green delegation unanimously issued a positive statement on NATO membership and Minister Haavisto stated that Finland would work for peace and disarmament within NATO. The same view ? to influence NATO from the inside - was expressed May 3 by the minister for education,Li Andersson (Left Wing Alliance), the only party in the Finnish parliament that up till now has been at least somewhat skeptical to the membership. It is quite obvious that Finland and Sweden will together apply for membership about mid May. Many prominent persons from western countries have warned for the consequences ? but their voices are not heard. The mainstream media fully supports the political elite. No democratic discussion is taken place. We want to discuss the actual political situation and how we can enlarge our protests and opposition. We are facing the danger of a great war in Europe Therefore we invite you to a zoom meeting May 18th at 5.30CEST. WHAT CAN STILL BE DONE? Should we push for an urgency OSCE summit to be held in Austria or Switzerland? How can we develop a stronger support for a policy of common security? How can we mobilize the public and counter more actively the pro NATO mainstream propaganda? Please let us know if you will participate in the meeting so we can send you the zoom link and a more detailed agenda. But we need your help, please! Please donate now A few days ago, our team in Ukraine received a deeply distressing call from a prison manager near Kharkiv, begging for our help. According to the manager, the prison?s service dogs are no longer being fed. These skin-and-bone animals are locked in their enclosures and literally starving to death. Of course, our team immediately alerted us, and we have promised to do everything we can to help. No one knows exactly why these service dogs are not being fed, but the most likely explanation is that state funding has either dried up or that organizations on the ground which once fed them may have stopped operating. This is a war zone, and not only are animals at the bottom of everyone?s priority list (except ours, and yours!), but some organizations are tragically no longer even in existence. What has happened to them doesn?t even bear thinking about. While there are a lot of unanswered questions, one thing IS clear: the dogs desperately need to be fed and we are the only ones who can do it. We MUST get them food, and we must do it immediately. The service dogs are STARVING. Please will you help by donating NOW? Please donate now Network for Animals has received hundreds of pleas for help from shelters and organizations across Ukraine begging for help in feeding their animals. Pet food supplies have all but dried up and it?s far too dangerous for people to travel to find food for their animals, or to venture out to feed the unfortunate dogs and cats living on the streets. Vladimir, can you believe that some street animals have managed to survive two months of war? We can?t even begin to imagine the physical and emotional state they must be in, having spent months dodging bullets and bombs to find tiny scraps of food, feed their litters and just stay alive. Thank goodness for our partnership with pet food manufacturer Vetmarket Pluriton! Our goal is to help as many organizations feed their animals as possible, which is why we partnered with pet food manufacturer, Vetmarket Pluriton, a few weeks ago. Their team not only produces 21 TONS of pet food every week, but they are brave enough to travel into some of the most dangerous and devastated areas to feed the animals who need it most. Like at the prison near Kharkiv? Here, 24 service dogs - bred for service and used for security patrols at the prison - have been slowly starving to death as the prison survived a bombing and the inmates continued to be fed. We are so grateful to the prison manager who contacted us in desperation as he could no longer watch the animals dying before his eyes. The dogs need roughly 1,300 pounds (600 kilos) of food per month to survive, and Vetmarket is able to drop this food directly at the prison gate where it will be collected and distributed to the ravenous animals. Prices for pet food have soared and one of our biggest challenges is raising enough funds to feed all the animals. If we can raise the maximum amount possible, we can feed not only the prison dogs, but literally thousands of starving dogs around Ukraine. Please, help us save the highly trained service dogs from the worst possible fate. They didn?t ask to be ?imprisoned? in a war and left to starve, and without us, they WILL die. They deserve all our help! Please donate now With your support, WE PROMISE to keep feeding the 24 service dogs and up to 500 street dogs in Kharkiv who are relying on us to survive. Some are STILL locked up on people's properties! Vetmarket now also has a team of volunteers who go to their warehouse near Kharkiv and collect NFA food to hand out to the animals on the streets. They know where the trapped animals are - animals who have tragically been tied up or locked up on people's properties - and they throw food to them. These are deadly missions, as they skirt close to occupied areas every day and are risking their lives to keep the animals from starving to death. will you donate now, and help keep their desperate little bellies full? Our team on the ground is working non-stop to produce and distribute Network for Animals? food. We have the capacity and the courage to do it, but we urgently need the funds to keep going. Prices continue to soar, and critical supplies are more and more difficult to come by. We must hurry to produce as much food as we can, so that we can keep our warehouses full, and the animals fed - no matter what might happen. Please donate now Without your donations, we simply can?t fund this LITERAL LIFESAVING MISSION for the animals of Ukraine. Please, donate whatever you can right now - it will feed the animals TODAY. Some of these animals are sick, some are old, and some are pregnant. Wherever possible, we will always try to save the animals we can, but the very least we can do for them right now is keep them fed. Otherwise, they WILL die. It?s that tragic. For the animals, Brian and Gloria Davies (and Max and Flora!) Founders Network for Animals P.S. you?ll be pleased to know that your donations ARE reaching animals that would otherwise have NO HOPE of ever receiving help in this terrible war. We are supporting partners and feeding animals in Odessa, Kherson and the Khmelnytskyi Oblast region among others - areas that are under constant siege or threat of attack. Without your donations, we would never have been able to reach these poor animals. Their every meal is so gratefully received, and they are so grateful to YOU! But we can stop the construction and protect one of the most biodiverse corners of Europe. Will you join us and add your voice now? Sign now! This petition was launched on our YouMove platform by CEE Bankwatch Network. We think it may interest you. Imagine overnight a giant highway is set up through your home. The ground shakes you awake as strangers invade your garden with machinery that leaves scars even time cannot heal. The landscape is gone forever. This is the reality for the local residents of the Neretva Valley in Bosnia and Herzegovina right now. The Neretva Valley is a habitat for rare endangered fish and bird species. It is also an important source of food for large number of people. [1] And still European banks are using our public money to finance a giant highway that will rip through the area and destroy it. Local people are already rising up. [2] But they need our help to turn this into an European story. Together we are able to amplify their voices and bring pressure from across Europe. Now we have a chance to do just that - tomorrow an important bank backing the highway has a key meeting. Our partner Bankwatch will be there. If we can arm them with the voices of thousands of us speaking up for nature, we can stop the highway. So, will you add your voice to those of us already standing up for the lives of birds and fish now? Yes - count me in! Our community has come behind petitions like this, set up by local organisations, many times and won! Hundreds of thousands of us signed a petition that has stopped a mega-port in Tenerife. It threatened the only whale heritage site in the European Union. Thanks to our work together the home to more than 75 protected species including whales, dolphins, sharks and turtles is now safe. [3] Concerns about environmental impacts of highway in Neretva Valley are growing. The threats to cultural heritage are being raised by more and more local people and cultural figures. They are doing all they can to demand the project is halted. But they cannot do it alone. The time has come to go bigger and bring outside pressure on the banks funding this destruction. We can show them Europe is watching and their reputation is on the line everywhere. Will you answer their calls and take action together to protect the nature of the Neretva Valley? Yes - we must protect biodiversity in Europe! Putin Is Using Dolphins to Defend a Russian Naval Base in His Illegal Invasion of Ukraine! Sign Now As anti-war activists in the 1960s warned us, war is bad for all living things. And these days, that apparently includes trained dolphins, who are being exploited by the Russian Navy to counter Ukrainian divers attempting to enter the port and sabotage Russian warships. New satellite photos show that the Russian military has placed captive, trained dolphins at the entrance to a port in the Black Sea, and naval analysts believe that this is part of a careful strategy to protect the base using the dolphins' sonar abilities. Dolphins are remarkably intelligent and highly social creatures. The charismatic marine mammals lead vibrant lives in which they develop complex relationships with one another. Each dolphin has its own name, one with which other dolphins refer to it. Dolphins are also self-aware, and famously known as one of the smartest animals on the planet. They deserve a life of autonomy and respect -- not to be dragged into Putin's brutal war games as puppets of violence and destruction. This is just another egregious example of Putin's illegal invasion being even more inhumane than we had previously imagined. No marine mammals -- or any animals at all -- should be part of acts of war or wartime strategy. We must stop the exploitation of these dolphins now! The report, an authoritative compendium of drought-related information and data, helps inform negotiations of one of several decisions by UNCCD?s 196 member states, to be issued 20 May at the conclusion of COP15. ?The facts and figures of this publication all point in the same direction: an upward trajectory in the duration of droughts and the severity of impacts, not only affecting human societies but also the ecological systems upon which the survival of all life depends, including that of our own species.? says Ibrahim Thiaw, Executive Secretary of the UNCCD. The report creates a compelling call to action. For example: a.. Since 2000, the number and duration of droughts has risen 29% b.. From 1970 to 2019, weather, climate and water hazards accounted for 50% of disasters and 45% of disaster-related deaths, mostly in developing countries c.. Droughts represent 15% of natural disasters but took the largest human toll, approximately 650,000 deaths from 1970-2019 d.. From 1998 to 2017, droughts caused global economic losses of roughly USD 124 billion e.. In 2022, more than 2.3 billion people face water stress; almost 160 million children are exposed to severe and prolonged droughts Unless action is stepped up: a.. By 2030, an estimated 700 million people will be at risk of being displaced by drought b.. By 2040, an estimated one in four children will live in areas with extreme water shortages c.. By 2050, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world?s population, and an estimated 4.8-5.7 billion people will live in areas that are water-scarce for at least one month each year, up from 3.6 billion today. And up to 216 million people could be forced to migrate by 2050, largely due to drought in combination with other factors including water scarcity, declining crop productivity, sea-level rise, and overpopulation d.. See below for additional report highlights ?We are at a crossroads,? says Mr. Thiaw. ?We need to steer toward the solutions rather than continuing with destructive actions, believing that marginal change can heal systemic failure.? ?One of the best, most comprehensive solutions is land restoration, which addresses many of the underlying factors of degraded water cycles and the loss of soil fertility. We must build and rebuild our landscapes better, mimicking nature wherever possible and creating functional ecological systems.? Beyond restoration, he adds, is the need for a paradigm shift from ?reactive? and ?crisis-based? approaches to ?proactive? and ?risk-based? drought management approaches involving coordination, communication and cooperation, driven by sufficient finance and political will. Needed as well: a.. Sustainable and efficient agricultural management techniques that grow more food on less land and with less water b.. Changes in our relationships with food, fodder and fiber, moving toward plant-based diets, and reducing or stopping the consumption of animals c.. Concerted policy and partnerships at all levels d.. Development and implementation of integrated drought action plans e.. Set up effective early-warning systems that work across boundaries f.. Deployment of new technologies such as satellite monitoring and artificial intelligence to guide decisions with greater precision g.. Regular monitoring and reporting to ensure continuous improvement h.. Mobilize sustainable finance to improve drought resilience at the local level i.. Invest in soil health j.. Work together and include and mobilize farmers, local communities, businesses, consumers, investors, entrepreneurs and, above all, young people The new UNCCD report notes that 128 countries have expressed willingness to achieve or exceed Land Degradation Neutrality. And nearly 70 countries participated in the UNCCD?s global drought initiative, which aims to shift from reactive approaches to drought to a proactive and risk-reducing approach. Mr. Thiaw underlined the importance of promoting public awareness about desertification and drought, and letting people know the problems can be effectively tackled ?through ingenuity, commitment and solidarity.? ?We all must live up to our responsibility to ensure the health of present and future generations, wholeheartedly and without delay.? The COP15 decision on drought is expected to touch on five interrelated areas: a.. drought policies b.. early warning, monitoring and assessment c.. knowledge sharing and learning d.. partnerships and coordination, and e.. drought finance * * * * * UNCCD launches ?Droughtland? public awareness initiative Droughtland, a new UNCCD public awareness campaign also launched today aims to showcase solutions and rally global action on drought. The campaign will be featured during UN Desertification and Drought Day (17 June), hosted this year by Madrid, Spain UN Desertification and Drought Day has four key objectives: a.. Equip people worldwide with tools to assess their current or potential future exposure to drought risk b.. Share proven, innovative international solutions to drought c.. Create public opportunities to participate in action, and d.. Celebrate progress and inspire action * * * * * Additional highlights, Drought in Numbers, 2022 Drought around the world (1900-2022) a.. More than 10 million people died due to major drought events in the past century, causing several hundred billion USD in economic losses worldwide. And the numbers are rising b.. Severe drought affects Africa more than any other continent, with more than 300 events recorded in the past 100 years, accounting for 44% of the global total. More recently, sub-Saharan Africa has experienced the dramatic consequences of climate disasters becoming more frequent and intense c.. In the past century, 45 major drought events occurred in Europe, affecting millions of people and resulting in more than USD 27.8 billion in economic losses. Today, an annual average of 15% of the land area and 17% of the population within the European Union is affected by drought d.. In the U.S., crop failures and other economic losses due to drought have totaled several hundred billion USD over the last century ? USD 249 billion alone since 1980 e.. Over the past century, the highest total number of humans affected by drought were in Asia Impacts on human society a.. Over 1.4 billion people were affected by drought from 2000 to 2019. This makes drought the disaster affecting the second-highest number of people, after flooding. Africa suffered from drought more frequently than any other continent with 134 droughts, of which 70 occurred in East Africa b.. The effect of severe droughts was estimated to have reduced India?s gross domestic product by 2-5% over the 10 years 1998 to 2017 c.. As a result of the Australian Millennium Drought, total agricultural productivity fell by 18% from 2002 to 2010 d.. Greater burdens and suffering are inflicted on women and girls in emerging and developing countries in terms of education levels, nutrition, health, sanitation, and safety e.. The burden of water collection ? especially in drylands ? falls disproportionately on women (72%) and girls (9%), who, in some cases, spend as much as 40% of their calorific intake carrying water f.. Droughts have deep, widespread and underestimated impacts on societies, ecosystems, and economies, with only a portion of the actual losses accounted for g.. A 2017 California case study showed that an increase of about 100 drought stories over two months was associated with a reduction of 11 to 18% in typical household water-use Impacts on ecosystems a.. The percentage of plants affected by drought has more than doubled in the last 40 years, with about 12 million hectares of land lost each year due to drought and desertification b.. Ecosystems progressively turn into carbon sources, especially during extreme drought events, detectable on five of six continents c.. One-third of global carbon dioxide emissions is offset by the carbon uptake of terrestrial ecosystems, yet their capacity to sequester carbon is highly sensitive to drought events d.. 14% of wetlands critical for migratory species, as listed by Ramsar, are located in drought-prone regions e.. The megadrought in Australia contributed to ?megafires? in 2019-2020 resulting in the most dramatic loss of habitat for threatened species in postcolonial history; about 3 billion animals were killed or displaced in the Australian wildfires f.. Drought-induced peatland fires in Indonesia resulted in decreasing biodiversity, including both the number of individuals as well as plant species g.. Photosynthesis in European ecosystems was reduced by 30% during the summer drought of 2003, which resulted in an estimated net carbon release of 0.5 gigatons h.. 84% of terrestrial ecosystems are threatened by changing and intensifying wildfires i.. During the first two decades of the 21st century, the Amazon experienced 3 widespread droughts, all of which triggered massive forest fires. Drought events are becoming increasingly common in the Amazon region due to land-use and climate change, which are interlinked. j.. If Amazonian deforestation continues unabated, 16% of the region?s remaining forests will likely burn by 2050 Predictable futures a.. Climate change is expected to increase the risk of droughts in many vulnerable regions of the world, particularly those with rapid population growth, vulnerable populations and challenges with food security b.. Within the next few decades, 129 countries will experience an increase in drought exposure mainly due to climate change alone ? 23 primarily due to population growth and 38 mostly due to the interaction between climate change and population growth c.. If global warming reaches 3 degrees Celsius by 2100 as some predict, drought losses could be five times higher than they are today, with the largest increase in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic regions of Europe d.. In Angola, more than 40% of livestock, a significant livelihood source accounting for 31.4% of the agricultural GDP, is currently exposed to droughts and expected to rise to 70% under projected climate conditions e.. In the E.U. and U.K., annual losses from drought are currently estimated to be around EUR 9 billion and projected to rise to more than EUR 65 billion without meaningful climate action Successful business cases a.. By adopting drip irrigation, small-scale vegetable farmers in drought-prone provinces of VietNam (Binh Phouc), Cambodia (Prey Veng and Svay Reing), the Philippines (Lantapan and Bukidnon) and Indonesia (Reing and Bogor, West Java; Rembang, East Java) were able to increase water use efficiency by up to 43% and yield by 8-15% b.. With the highest water efficiency rate in agriculture, reaching a 70-80% rate, drip irrigation has helped to solve the problem of water scarcity in Israel Other highlights a.. Information Technology and Indigenous Knowledge with Intelligence (ITIKI) is a drought early warning system that integrates Indigenous knowledge and drought forecasting to help small-scale farmers make more informed decisions, for example, on when and how to plant which crops. The support forecast models provides accuracy of 70-98% for lead-times of up to four years, as shown by trials in Mozambique, Kenya and South Africa b.. Up to USD 1.4 trillion in production value can be generated globally by adopting sustainable land and water management practices c.. Approximately 4 million hectares of degraded land within ?strict intervention zones? have been rehabilitated under the framework of the African Union?led restoration initiative known as the Great Green Wall ? 4% of the Wall?s ultimate target of restoring 100 million hectares, helping to reduce the immanent threats of desertification and drought * * * * * Related: UNCCD?s flagship Global Land Outlook 2 (GLO2) report, five years in development with 21 partner organizations, and with over 1,000 references, is the most comprehensive consolidation of information on the topic ever assembled. Released Apr. 27, it reported up to 40% of all ice-free land is already degraded, with dire consequences for climate, biodiversity and livelihoods. * * * * * Notes to editors The 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD, 9-20 May, Abidjan, C?te d?Ivoire) is focussed on: a.. The shocking nature of Bruce's death was no mistake -- his actions hauntingly echoed the urgency of the climate crisis staring our politicians in the face. Climate scientists have been sounding the alarm on climate change for decades, and while we have waited for world leaders to stop dragging their feet, the warming "tipping point" looms ever closer -- degrees of warming from which we cannot come back, which will destroy ecosystems, create even more extreme weather patterns, and make life-sustaining conditions a thing of the past. Miriam is an expert on how we can rethink warfare economies and make the transition away from arms manufacturing. Next, we'll hear traditional Montenegrin music from the Save Sinjajevina campaign, and then break out into 3 different workshops: a.. Workshop: How to Block a Military Training Ground & Preserve the Balkans? Biggest Mountain Grassland: An Update from the Save Sinjajevina Campaign, led by Milan Sekulovi? b.. Workshop: How to Demilitarize & ?Peacify? Education with Phill Gittins of World BEYOND War and Carmen Wilson of Demilitarise Education c.. Training: Nonviolent Communication Skills We'll conclude Day 2 with a panel on Divestment & Reinvestment, which will concretely explore how to divest public and private dollars from extractive industries like weapons and fossil fuels, and at the same time, how to rebuild the just world we want through doable reinvestment strategies that prioritize community needs. Featuring Shea Leibow of CODEPINK, Nadira Foster of Divest Ed, and Britt Runeckles of Towards a People?s Endowment. Day 3: Sunday, July 10, 2022 Day 3 on July 10 will begin with a panel on "Resisting & Regenerating in the Aftermath of War, Sanctions, and Violent Conflict" featuring unique stories of those who have direct experience in the face of conflict and how they have used regenerative strategies like farming and permaculture to push back against a culture of violence and model the just, peaceful, and green world we want. Following the panel, we will break out into 3 workshops: a.. Workshop: How to Shut Down & Transform a Military Base Site with Thea Valentina Gardellin, a spokesperson for the No Dal Molin, a grassroots movement against American military bases in Vicenza, Italy b.. Workshop: Demilitarizing the Police & Alternative Policing Models with David Swanson of World BEYOND War and other speakers TBA c.. Workshop: How to Challenge Mainstream Media Bias & Promote Peace Journalism with Jeff Cohen of FAIR.org, Steven Youngblood of the Center for Global Peace Journalism, and Dru Oja Jay of The Breach. Modeling the conference theme of ?resistance and regeneration,? this workshop will begin with a media literacy primer, vis-?-vis FAIR.org?s techniques to expose and critique mainstream media bias. Then we will lay out a framework for the alternative ? principles of counternarrative storytelling from a peace journalism perspective. We will conclude with a discussion of practical applications of these principles, such as through independent media outlets like The Breach, whose mission is focused on ?journalism for transformation.? Message-ID: We?re one step closer to a future that protects our oceans and marine life. And this community played its part. Last week, we sent thousands of messages to our European Members of Parliament (MEPs) to vote to prohibit destructive fishing. At the same time our partners Oceana Europe, Our Fish, Seas at Risk and others put door hangers on MEPs' doors to remind them of our message. [1] Activists in Strasbourg ready to enter Parliament before the vote to place the door hangers on MEPs' doors Door hanger placed on doors of our MEPs in Strasbourg And they listened to us! MEPs called on the EU to prohibit the use of giant nets that kill dolphins, seals, corals, seahorses and hundreds of other marine species in our protected areas ? a practice known as bottom-trawling. [2] Our voice was stronger than that of the industrial fisheries, but it was a close call! French MEPs supporting Macron almost sabotaged the vote. [3] But thanks to Green MEPs, we ultimately won! This result comes at the perfect time! The Commission is currently writing the Oceans Action Plan which will set the rules for how we protect and restore our oceans for years to come. [4] The Parliament?s position will pressure the Commission to write a strong Oceans Action Plan. Last year, this community sprung into action to push the Commission (and in particular the Oceans Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevi?ius) to do exactly this. In the summer, with big wave surfing champion Maya Gabeira, we dove into the Mediterranean together to deliver our message at one of the year's biggest climate conferences. And in winter we chipped in together to fund a pop-up book that captures the story of how EU leaders could write a better story for our oceans. Now, the Oceans Commissioner faces added pressure from the majority of the European Parliament. With more than 150,000 Europeans and Parliament on side, we expect the Commission to include a ban on bottom-trawling in the upcoming Oceans Action Plan. We?ll be sure to keep you up to date. And hope to share the good news that we?ve stopped destructive fishing. French MEPs removed a specific reference to bottom trawling in one amendment, they called on the EU to prohibit extractive industrial activities - which includes fishing practices like bottom trawling - in marine protected areas. Then, Green MEPs went even further than the proposal rejected by the French with another amendment calling on the EU to limit the use of detrimental fishing techniques, including bottom trawling, outside marine protected areas. This was passed. https://europe.oceana.org/en/press-center/press-releases/european-parliament-calls-action-bottom-fishing-and-true-protection-0 https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/A-9-2022-0089-AM-001-003_EN.pdf (amendments 1-3 added by Green MEPs that were passed) https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/A-9-2022-0089-AM-004-004_EN.pdf (amendment 4 that was changed by French Renew MEPs) [4] In 2020 the EU released its Biodiversity Strategy for the next ten years. The strategy includes a commitment to halting the biodiversity crisis and commits to developing an ?Action Plan to Conserve Fisheries Resources and Protect Marine Ecosystems?, which we?re calling the Ocean Action Plan for short. The Ocean Action Plan should limit the most destructive fishing gear and create a plan for how to transition to low-impact fishing. It has enormous potential to restore ocean health, but the details are so important. When the pandemic shut down Thailand's tourism, 3500 captive elephants were shackled in chains and left to starve. Their keepers no longer able to afford to feed them. But our friends at Save Elephant Foundation stepped in with an idea to save them -- help their owners transition from cruel circus camps to ethical elephant sanctuaries, supported by people around the world who want to foster an elephant. It's working! At one business known for its circus show, 53 elephants now roam free, no longer forced to give rides and perform all day. But taking care of an elephant is expensive -- just imagine how much they eat every day! Plus vet care, security, and more. The foundation desperately needs funds to keep the project going. Together, we can help give these elephants their freedom. Can you chip in to save these elephants and protect wildlife worldwide? For decades, they've been ridden and forced to perform for tourists, their legs cruelly chained to poles and trees to keep them imprisoned. The misery these social animals are enduring is hard to imagine. What?s more, the tethering makes them vulnerable. Several elephants died when a storm caused trees to fall on them. But from this crisis came an opportunity. Save Elephant Foundation is going from one cruel elephant camp to the next, getting the owners to commit to becoming ethical elephant sanctuaries in return for financial assistance from people across the globe willing to foster an elephant. The owners must adhere to strict rules to improve elephant welfare standards. Already they?re seeing new elephant babies born, free of chains and abuse. The foundation wants to continue to expand, but can?t do it until they raise more funds. Asian elephants are endangered -- we can't afford to lose hundreds or even thousands to cruel captivity. Foie Gras Is Practically Legal Again in California. This Means More Animals Will Be Tortured! Sign Now Foie gras is inherently cruel. It's a food "delicacy" that is produced by force-feeding ducks and geese until farmers have painfully and unnaturally engorged the poor animals' livers. That's why, starting in 2012, California lawmakers banned the sale of foie gras in the state. But some are determined to put taste buds and profits before the wellbeing of animals ? and they've spent 10 years fighting the ban. Now, federal judges have overturned part of the law. This will put countless animals in harm's way ? so we need a federal ban now. The courts decided that consumers can now buy foie gras in California, after all, but only if they buy it from another state. This practically negates the ban, since one of the country's major producers of foie gras is located outside of California, in New York's Hudson Valley region. In fact, this producer was one of the main companies suing California over its foie gras sale ban. So far, luckily only home consumers will be able to buy the engorged livers of trapped animals, not restaurants or shops. But foie gras devotees will continue to fight back, so we need to take nationwide action now to protect innocent geese and ducks from horrific misery and pain. Federal lawmakers need to recognize that animal suffering is never acceptable ? especially if it's just to produce a meal. Sign the petition to ask Congress to ban foie gras now! For years, mega tech platforms like Facebook, YouTube and TikTok have been making billions while flooding the world with disinformation, hate speech and other harmful content. But after years of incredible campaigning, the European Union has just agreed on a historic law that will force Big Tech to change ? and this could be the start of a global revolution to protect us all! We can honestly say Europe?s new Digital Services Act wouldn?t look like it does without Avaaz. We ran massive investigations into the harms caused by social media and shared our findings everywhere. Then we drafted groundbreaking legislative proposals on how to protect our societies as well as freedom of speech, and ran a huge push to get key lawmakers on board! And it worked! EU Commission Vice-President Margrethe Vestager endorsed our call for a ?Paris Agreement of the Internet?. And EU Commissioner Thierry Breton was so convinced by our research that he went on TV to talk about it the day after we met him! EU leaders publicly thanking Avaaz and its members For over four years, our movement - together with an inspiring civil society coalition ? has been at the forefront of this battle to protect citizens and democracy. Read on for the full story of how a few dozen activists, researchers, and hundreds of thousands of Avaaz members across the world took on some of the most powerful corporations that have ever existed ? and won! 2018: A Hundred Zuckerbergs (yikes!) It all started almost exactly 4 years ago, in 2018: disinformation was creating havoc in democracies, and hate speech was being weaponised around the world. In April that year, we launched our first global call to platforms and regulators to "Fix Fakebook" and rein in big tech. Over 1 million people joined that call, and we flooded Washington and Brussels with over a hundred cardboard cutouts of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The image landed in media all over the world, including on the front page of the New York Times. We travelled to Silicon Valley to meet with top executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google, trying to convince them to act. But we were banned from some of their offices, and had to hold meetings in the car park! It was clear that the companies weren?t serious about tackling the toxicity on their platforms. We needed to change the laws that governed them. Next stop: the European Union. 2019: Diagnosing the Problem, and Defining the Fix In 2019, many EU lawmakers didn?t really understand the problem. The idea that lies and conspiracy theories going viral online were having a serious impact on our democracies was contested ? and without proof, the regulators wouldn?t act. So, inspired by a Lithuanian project, we hired researchers we called ?elves? to investigate internet ?trolls? and reveal the scale of the disinformation problem, especially the impact it was having in Europe. Working from a war room in Brussels, our team of 30 ?elves? uncovered what 30,000 Facebook monitors and their team of experts seemed to have missed: huge networks, using fake accounts and inauthentic pages, spreading toxic lies and hatred across Europe ahead of crucial elections. Following our investigation, Facebook took down networks that could reach an estimated 3 BILLION (!!!!) views in a single year!! A glimpse into our anti-disinformation war room in Brussels As election day approached, top EU politicians, journalists and security experts were coming to our war room almost every day for information and briefings. Our work made headline news all over the world warning millions of Europeans of the disinformation threat just before the elections. Even Facebook publicly thanked us! Exposing these networks helped Europe dodge a bullet in the elections. But top EU officials were shocked by what we had found and asked us: what could be done? So, working with social media insiders, academics and lawmakers, we developed research-backed proposals to clean up social media while protecting freedom of speech: 1.. Detox the algorithm. Stop platforms from making dangerous disinformation and harmful content go viral just to keep us hooked to our screens 2.. Correct the record. Show every single person who sees disinformation a correction from an independent fact-checker right in their news feeds. TIME Magazine called it a ?radical new proposal that could curb fake news on social media? But with a new virus emerging in Wuhan and the US elections looming, we were about to see some of the most terrifying impact of disinformation yet. 2020: Social media vs. Democracy and Public Health As Covid-19 spread across the world, lies and conspiracy theories about it also went viral. Our researchers released a bombshell investigation showing how Facebook was an epicentre of Covid misinformation. On the same day, Facebook announced that they would direct anyone who engaged with Covid misinformation to fact-checks on the World Health Organisation?s website. This was the first time Facebook had EVER done this! Politico wrote: ?Thing is, it wasn?t the globe?s most powerful tech regulator that forced Facebook to acknowledge flaws in its policy ? it was campaign group Avaaz...? We didn?t stop there, and in another hard-hitting report showed how Facebook?s algorithm itself became a global threat to public health - spreading our findings all over the media and presenting them directly to key EU and US officials. 2020 was also the year of the US presidential election. A year before the vote, we?d found there was already more disinformation on Facebook than found in the three months ahead of the 2016 elections! We hired a dedicated team of US researchers, and in the run up to the election, we produced over 40 investigations on the rampant disinformation, hate, violence and extremism that was spreading online, pushing Facebook to act on many harmful networks that had spread dangerous content to millions. And just around the elections, Facebook launched emergency measures, throttling the spread of many of the pages we had identified as repeat misinformers, making it harder for them to flood social media with lies and hatred before the vote. But shortly after election day, Facebook withdrew some of the measures they?d put in place! It was a disaster. A tsunami of lies claiming that the election had been stolen flooded Americans? social media feeds. We investigated many of the networks making these lies go viral, and one of the biggest we found, tied to Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon, was banned from Facebook for spreading false claims about the vote. But the damage was already done. On January 6th, protestors convinced that the election had been stolen violently stormed the US Congress. Our researchers jumped into action and within days were able to show to show how Facebook had been used to stoke the violence. Our report was covered in a slew of outlets, from AP to Time, Washington Post, and more, and our research was mentioned repeatedly in a Congressional hearing at which Zuckerberg and other tech executives testified. 2021 and Beyond: Towards a "Paris Agreement for the Internet" There was no longer any doubt about the threat that disinformation posed. But we still didn?t have the laws we needed. Then came a chance ? the EU was developing the Digital Services Act, a new law to govern digital technology. As we met with decision-maker after decision-maker to argue that the legislation should focus on holding platforms accountable for harms created by their algorithms, slowly the idea started to gain traction. And we didn?t let go ? showing up at every single meeting, event or video call with our findings, and publishing ever more evidence exposing how platforms were failing. We even organised a conference on disinformation bringing together some of the most influential EU politicians and executives from Facebook and Twitter to make our case! Despite frantic lobbying by the social platforms, things began to move in our direction. But it wasn?t a done deal ? so to show public support, we commissioned a huge poll that found 83% of people in Germany, France, Italy and Spain wanted platforms to change their algorithms if they were found to be amplifying harmful content. We even delivered messages to politicians from Avaaz members across Europe in beautifully made books! Click on the image to read the book! And then, after years of work, months of negotiations, and a final stretch of over 16 hours of non-stop discussions in Brussels, it happened: officials and lawmakers agreed upon a historic law that holds platforms accountable for the harms caused by their algorithms. Here?s what the law will do when it goes into effect: a.. Detoxify the algorithm ? Online platforms like Facebook will have to take responsibility for the harms they cause to our societies, for example, for the way their systems help spread toxic content across the internet; b.. Open the black box ? Allow independent auditors, researchers and civil society to scrutinise platforms? actions and uncover their wrongdoings. c.. Impose big sanctions ? Platforms will face fines up to 6% of their global income (yes we're talking billions of dollars here) if they don?t comply with the rules. d.. A step closer to stopping surveillance advertising ? Ban the targeting of people with ads based on their political beliefs or gender, and end the exploitation of children?s data entirely. This is a massive step forward for the future of the internet and democracy. It could be the tipping point to help us restore the dream of an internet that makes us more connected, better informed, and more empowered as citizens. Of an internet that is FOR US and not AGAINST US. We?ve been on the forefront of this fight alongside an incredible set of organisations, researchers, whistleblowers and, yes, politicians. But changing how these huge corporations operate will not happen overnight. Our movement will celebrate this massive win, and then keep fighting for the internet that the world needs, and our people deserve. Cruelty-Free Plant Leather Is the Future. Tell Major Fashion Brands to Ditch Animal Suffering! Sign Now We all know that fur fashion is cruelty ? but the leather trade is bad for animals, too. To produce our bags, coats, shoes, and more, living creatures are imprisoned, forced into a lifetime of servitude and suffering, and then slaughtered for our clothing. On top of that, it also hurts the environment. Leather production ? just like animal-based agriculture ? requires huge amounts of land, water, and other resources in order to raise the animals who are then butchered for their skin and flesh. It contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore climate change, as well as deforestation. That's why it's so exciting to learn that more and more companies are turning to plant-based leather alternatives. So why are some major fashion houses refusing to move away from animal leather and toward sustainable alternatives? Plant-based leather can now be made from a variety of all-natural resources such as grapes, cactus, kombucha, mushrooms, pineapples, apples, bananas, and more. These fruit and fungi leathers are full of benefits for animals and the planet. The fur-free movement has shown us that change is possible. With enough pressure, even the most prominent brands in the world will finally choose innovative alternatives over suffering-based options. In fact, over the past several years, Prada, Versace, Armani, Michael Kors, Zara, H&M, and hundreds of other brands and retailers have committed to phasing out fur in their products. Now it's time for them to eliminate animal-based leather, too. Sign the petition to tell these major fashion houses to replace animal leather with plant-based alternatives now! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. There's no such thing as ethical or "cruelty-free" animal leather. Sign the petition. Message-ID: UN Global Climate Action 18 May 2022 High Level Climate Champions Newsletter Join the Technical Dialogue of the Global Stocktake The secretariat of UN Climate Change, in collaboration with the High-Level Champions, Nigel Topping of the COP 26 Presidency (UK) and Mahmoud Mohieldin of the COP 27 Presidency (Egypt) have launched an Expression of Interest process to assist in inviting cities, subnational regions, businesses, investors and civil society to the first technical dialogue of the first global stocktake (GST) taking place during the UN Climate Change conference in Bonn in June. The GST is an official process under the Paris Agreement that provides critical information for countries and stakeholders to measure the collective progress being made towards the Paris Agreement goals in this critical decade for climate action, and to identify gaps and opportunities for increased action and support. As non-Party stakeholders play an important role in the GST, the recently published information note by the co-facilitators of the technical dialogue outlined their approach and how 45 non-Party stakeholders will be invited to engage with 60 technical experts from Party delegations. As part of the Glasgow Climate Pact from COP 26, Parties welcomed the improved Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action for enhancing ambition 2021-2025 from the High-Level Champions, where supporting the GST is one of the main priorities and uses the timelines of the GST process to build and plan around, and also encouraged the High-Level Champions to support the effective participation of non-Party stakeholders in the GST. As such, the High-Level Champions are encouraging active participation of non-Party stakeholders in the technical dialogue to support Parties in this process. To be considered for participation, please submit your expression of interest available on this webpage before Thursday, 19 May 23:59 CEST. View this email in the Hub Is white supremacy driving increased targeted violence and extremism in the US? Take the Poll This weekend, a gun man killed ten people and wounded three others in a racially motivated shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, NY. Law enforcement officials familiar with the case have said that the shooter researched locations with higher concentrations of Black people and posted a manifesto which included numerous antisemitic and racist memes and repeated prominent white supremacist conspiracy theories, including ?The Great Replacement Theory?. The gunman livestreamed the attack the platform Twitch, the company told NPR and the stream was shut down less than 2 minutes after the violence began. Additionally, the suspect had threatened a shooting at his high school last year. He was subsequently sent to a hospital for a mental health evaluation that lasted only a day and a half. Over the past couple of years, there has been a significant uptick in racially-motivated shootings across the United States. Recent instances of targeted violence have been aimed at a Black church in South Carolina, a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Asian-Americans in Dallas and Georgia, and immigrants at a Walmart in El Paso, to name a few. Many believe that these shootings drew inspiration from a shooting in New Zealand who targeted mosques, killing 51, and published his own manifesto about "The Great Replacement." Following the attack, President Joe Biden called for national unity against white supremacy: ?A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation. Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America. Hate must have no safe harbor. We must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism.? Across the aisle, members of congress have also promised action against white supremicism and shown their support for the victims. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stated that tighter gun regulations are a priority for Democrats and pledged to work with the White House to get the job done. Additionally, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) accused the Republican Party leadership of enabled white nationalism, white supremacy, and anti-semitism: ?The House GOP leadership has enabled white nationalism, white supremacy, and anti-semitism. History has taught us that what begins with words ends in far worse. @GOP leaders must renounce and reject these views and those who hold them.? a.. Read more on the shooting HERE b.. Nearly One in Four Rural Americans Doesn't Have Access to the Internet at Home. Congress Must Change That! Sign Now In 2022, most of us are highly dependent on broadband access. The internet is quite literally essential to all aspects of modern life: perhaps most obviously in terms of work and education, but also in how we socialize, entertain ourselves, access important information about our health and well-being, and stay informed about what's happening in our country and around the globe. Yet millions of Americans lack even basic broadband access, effectively shutting them out of job opportunities and connection to the rest of the world. It's high time Congress do something about this harmfully unequal access. Sign the petition now to demand that Congress fund internet expansion and quality improvements in rural communities! The internet access gap is especially stark among the poorest Americans. And, crucially, increasing broadband access has the potential to dramatically reduce the massive wealth disparity that exists between the nation's highest and lowest income residents. Researchers have found that higher levels of broadband adoptions contribute to higher incomes and lower unemployment -- as well as more economic growth overall. On top of that, for those that live in rural communities far from the nearest medical facilities, telehealth access can mean life or death. No one is fooled! Call on Nestl? to switch to reusable packaging now. SIGN THE PETITION Congrats to Nestl? for making it to the top 4 worst plastic polluters in the world for the 4th year in a row! This is mediocrity at its best for the Swiss multinational. Nestl? has announced that it is aiming for 0 emissions, including those linked to the production of plastics, by 2050. But as one of the biggest planet-destroying corporations, this isn?t nearly ambitious enough to stop catastrophic climate change. If Nestl? wants to be credible, the company must act now! Tell Nestl? to reduce packaging and replace all its plastic packaging with reusable ones by 2025. It's the Break Free from Plastic Alliance that identified Nestl? as one of the world's biggest plastic polluters. For months, thousands of volunteers collected plastic waste in parks, on beaches, in forests, in cities... They were able to identify the brands behind the plastic pollution. Nestl? pollutes our planet with plastic waste that kills marine and terrestrial animals by trapping them and making them sick. But by producing this plastic packaging, Nestl? is also directly polluting the environment. Nestl?'s plastic is produced from plastic resin by petrochemical companies such as Exxon, Total, Aramco or Shell. The process of manufacturing plastic, as well as the extraction of the raw materials for it, releases gargantuan amounts of CO2. While Nestl? has set a goal to end carbon emissions, the IPCC report predicts unprecedented climate chaos in 2050 if nothing is done in the next three years. Worse, a report by the Breakthrough-National Centre for Climate Restoration based on a more pessimistic model, simply forecasts the end of civilization in 2050 if nothing is done in the coming years. This climate carnage must stop now! Call on Nestl? to use reusable packaging in order to reach its zero emissions target by 2035. Last spring, hundreds of thousands of SumOfUs members like you pushed BNP to set more ambitious targets for ending deforestation, and we won! And in 2020, we pushed Apple to adopt a more ambitious human rights policy. Will you help rally again to push Nestl? to do the right thing for our planet? The food we eat, water we drink and air we breathe should be safe for everyone. It?s a simple value, but it?s under threat. Studies are finding a weed-killer - called glyphosate - is leaving toxins in our children?s blood. [1] And they don?t disappear overnight. They poison us over years. [2] The news comes as our leaders are deciding whether this chemical can stay on the European market. Already Bayer-Monsanto is spending millions to get them on side. The truth is, they are already celebrating - thinking we?ve all stopped watching. We can show that we haven?t. Before the final vote, our ministers of agriculture and environment are looking for signs of where the public stands. That means we need to be a thorn in the side of Bayer-Monsanto and bring back this debate. But we are a small team with a lean budget. We can?t do this alone? If we can raise ?32,045 together we?d have more capacity to drum up coverage, build local partnerships and support work on the ground. This would unlock our ability to push back before it?s too late! So, how about it, will you chip in a little and help get this plan up and running? Donate ?5 Donate ?8 Donate ?10 We?ve been here before, the last time this substance was up for review, they were expecting a blank cheque for the generations of damage they've caused, looking for a green light to continue that damage for another 15 years. But, together, we built a giant movement - with over a million of us behind it! Our work as a community meant that it was only renewed for 5 years. That period is now coming to an end. And another 15 years are back on the table. Whether or not we fight now is the difference between generations of damage or further cutting the legs from Bayer-Monsanto?s feet. We knew the time would come for us to take up the fight again. But we can only do so if we can count on the resources needed to have a real impact. And we have a plan to get rolling again. Back then we had one person working full time on this issue. If we can resource that again here are five things we could start on: 1.. Hire a part-time role to coordinate partners and build a scale of support the EU can?t ignore 2.. Organise on the ground work in Brussels to demonstrate the scale of opposition to European politicians 3.. Run national campaigns to grab headlines and build pressure from the bottom up on European politicians in their home countries 4.. Conduct opinion polls to show where other citizens stand and use this information to push back against the lies of Bayer-Monstanto's lobbyists 5.. Coordinate supplying research to politicians that will demonstrate the disastrous effects of glyphosate on our health and environment With the official political negotiations due to start soon, we are running out of time to make a decision. This is our chance to decide if we want to be in the fight or let it pass us by. If you think we should take the chance and get involved will you chip in to help get the plan off the ground? One of the most common topics of books, films, and other cultural productions, World War II, may also be one of the most misunderstood ? with that misunderstanding wildly misused to justify ghastly horrors, and even to take steps that are moving us closer to World War III. Here?s a new analysis of well-established facts, presented in an interactive global online course over six weeks. This course is 100% online and interactions are not live or scheduled, so you can take part whenever works for you. Weekly content includes a mix of text, images, video, and audio. Instructors and students utilize online discussion forums to go over each week's content, as well as to provide feedback on optional assignment submissions. The course also includes three 1-hour optional zoom calls which are designed to facilitate a more interactive and real-time learning experience. Please click here for answers to every question we could imagine, and to register for your spot in the course! Course fee: $100 (Pay less if you have to, more if you can.) There will be a limit of 150 tickets sold for this course. Everyone registered for the course will receive PDF, ePub, and/or mobi (kindle) versions of David Swanson's book Leaving World War II Behind, which will provide additional reading to those who want to go beyond the written, video, and graphic materials provided in the course. The purpose of the course is to inform the participant and enable them to inform others of why World War II is not a good justification for military spending and war planning, both because WWII happened in a very different world from today's, and because common beliefs about the nature of and justifications for WWII are false. By debunking myths about WWII having been necessary, justifiable, and beneficial, we can strengthen arguments for moving to a world beyond war. The course will explore why WWII was not fought to rescue anyone from persecution, was not necessary for defense, was the most damaging and destructive event yet to occur, and could have been prevented by avoiding any of several bad decisions. Future UNCCD meetings to be held in Saudi Arabia, Mongolia, Uzbekistan Abidjan, C?te d?Ivoire, 20 May 2022 ? A united global pledge to boost drought resilience and invest in land restoration for future prosperity today concluded the 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), held in Abidjan, C?te d?Ivoire. This two-week meeting on the future of land management drew nearly 7,000 participants, including Heads of State, ministers, delegates from the UNCCD?s 196 Parties and the European Union, as well as members of the private sector, civil society, women, youth leaders and media. Speaking at the closing ceremony of UNCCD COP15, Patrick Achi, Prime Minister of C?te d?Ivoire, said: ?Each generation faces this thorny question of how to meet the production needs of our societies [?] without destroying our forests and lands and thus condemning the future of those on whose behalf we endeavour.? He also drew attention to the US$2.5 billion raised for the Abidjan Legacy Programme launched by C?te d?Ivoire President Alassane Ouattara at the Heads of State Summit on 9 May, which has already surpassed the US$1.5 billion anticipated for it. At a news conference, Alain-Richard Donwahi, COP15 President, highlighted that it was the first time C?te d?Ivoire hosted a COP for one of the three Rio Conventions, and emphasized his country?s continued commitment to keep land issues high on the international agenda. Ibrahim Thiaw, UNCCD Executive Secretary, said: ?Meeting against the backdrop of multiple global challenges, including the worst-in-40-years drought in Eastern Africa, as well as food and economic crises fuelled by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts, countries have sent a united call about the importance of healthy and productive land for securing future prosperity for all.? Highlights among the new commitments: a.. Accelerate the restoration of one billion hectares of degraded land by 2030 by improving data gathering and monitoring to track progress against the achievement of land restoration commitments and establishing a new partnership model for large-scale integrated landscape investment programmes; b.. Boost drought resilience by identifying the expansion of drylands, improving national policies and early warning, monitoring and assessment; learning and sharing knowledge; building partnerships and coordinating action; and mobilizing drought finance. c.. Establish an Intergovernmental Working Group on Drought for 2022-2024 to look into possible options, including global policy instruments and regional policy frameworks, to support a shift from reactive to proactive drought management. d.. Address forced migration and displacement driven by desertification and land degradation by creating social and economic opportunities that increase rural resilience and livelihood stability, and by mobilizing resources, including from the diaspora, for land restoration projects; e.. Improve women?s involvement in land management as important enablers for effective land restoration, by addressing commonly encountered land tenure challenges by people in vulnerable situations, and collecting gender-disaggregated data on the impacts of desertification, land degradation and drought; f.. Address sand and dust storms and other escalating disaster risks by designing and implementing plans and policies including early warning and risk assessment, and mitigating their human-made causes at source; g.. Promote decent land-based jobs for youth and land-based youth entrepreneurship and strengthen youth participation in the UNCCD process; and h.. Ensure greater synergies among the three Rio Conventions, including complementarities in the implementation of these treaties through nature-based solutions and target-setting at the national level. In addition to the decisions, three declarations were issued during the COP, namely: a.. The Abidjan Call issued by the Heads of State and Government attending the Summit hosted by C?te d?Ivoire President Alassane Ouattara on 9 May. It aims to boost long-term environmental sustainability across major value chains in C?te d?Ivoire while protecting and restoring forests and lands and improving communities? resilience to climate change, which will require mobilization of US$1.5 billion over the next five years. b.. Abidjan Declaration on achieving gender equality for successful land restoration, which emerged from the Gender Caucus chaired by the First Lady Dominique Ouattara. c.. The COP15 ?Land, Life and Legacy? Declaration, which responds to the findings of the UNCCD?s flagship report, Global Land Outlook 2, a five-year study with 21 partner organizations, and with over 1,000 scientific references. Released 27 April, it reported up to 40% of all ice-free land is already degraded, with dire consequences for climate, biodiversity and livelihoods. Reports launched during COP15 include: a.. ?Drought in Numbers 2022,? a compendium of drought-related facts and figures, including a 29% a rise in droughts since 2000 and a projection that three-quarters of the world?s population will be affected by drought by 2050 unless urgent action is taken. b.. A special Southern Africa thematic report released as part of the Global Land Outlook series, which warned of rising pressures on land and land-based resources, exacerbated by insecure land tenure systems, pervasive poverty, and low rural literacy levels, raising risks for the most vulnerable among Africa?s population. It underlines the need to leverage strong links between the food, water, energy and environment sectors.A new technical guide that helps shape a tailor-made response to commonly encountered land tenure challenges via a range of national plans, legal frameworks, strategies, and action programmes addressing land degradation. c.. The study on Differentiated Impacts of Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought on Women and Men has revealed that women are twice more affected by these issues, and that drought and land degradation tend to increase the burden of unpaid care and domestic work shouldered by women and girls. d.. Sand and Dust Storms Compendium: Information and guidance on assessing and addressing the economic, environmental and health risks of these increasing phenomena. Also launched: a.. The Business for Land initiative aimed at bringing visibility to the commitments made by participating companies towards land degradation neutrality, both in supply chains and CSR activities. b.. The Sahel Sourcing Challenge to enable communities growing the Great Green Wall to use technology to monitor progress, create jobs and commercialize their produce such as baobab juice, moringa oil and shea butter. c.. Droughtland, a new UNCCD public awareness campaign that aims to showcase solutions and rally global action on drought. The campaign will also be featured during UN Desertification and Drought Day (17 June), hosted this year by Spain. UNCCD?s COP15 is the first Conference of the Parties of the three Rio Conventions taking place in 2022, ahead of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change COP27 and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity COP15. Future meetings of the Conference of the Parties to the UNCCD and its subsidiary bodies will be held in Saudi Arabia (COP16 in 2024), Mongolia (COP17 in 2026), and Uzbekistan (Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention in 2023). Why? Because rich countries are hoarding vaccine doses, refusing to share the recipes to increase supply, and prioritising boosters over global vaccination. Today, billions of people in low income countries are still waiting to receive their first shot, including health workers and the most vulnerable. And when the virus is left to spread unhindered, variants like Omicron thrive, trapping the world in an endless cycle. The only way to end this pandemic for good is by ensuring everyone has equal access to vaccines ? wherever they live. Add your name to the petition below calling on world leaders to vaccinate the world and make 2022 the year we finally end the pandemic: ADD MY NAME (with 1 click) Dear world leaders, We want the pandemic to end. With COVID-19 still raging globally and millions of people left vulnerable to the virus, inaction is not an option. We are urging you to adopt a global plan to vaccinate 70% of the population globally by September 2022 and end the pandemic everywhere once and for all. ADD MY NAME (with 1 click) Every day that passes, more families lose loved ones, more children lose out on education, and the world's economy gets further away from recovering. We believe our leaders have a responsibility to ensure that every country has the tools to fight the virus and end this pandemic, everywhere. If you agree, add your name to the petition now. Farmers Stab Pregnant Horses With Huge Needles At "Blood Farms." Iceland Must End This Practice Now! Sign Now More than 5,000 horses in Iceland are currently locked in any one of the nation's 119 "blood farms." In these facilities, farmers mine live pregnant horses for hormones inside their blood. Handlers extract the mares' blood during summer months, turn it into powder, then sell and ship it internationally to other farmers. That includes to facilities in Europe and the UK, where farmers use the hormone to force their livestock, such as cows, pigs, and sheep, to reproduce more than is natural. Animals endure all this exploitation just so farmers can enjoy more profits. One undercover video shows handlers hitting pregnant mares before shoving and imprisoning them inside "restraint boxes." Once locked in place, handlers then push huge needles into the pregnant horses' jugular veins ? extracting frightening amounts of blood. Farmers in Iceland regularly extract around 4x the maximum amount advised by International standards, taking 5 liters (1.3 gallons) of life-giving liquid from each horse, every week, for 8 weeks in a row. These pregnant animals' blood is necessary not just for their own survival, but also for providing their foals with vital nutrients. Icelanders are speaking out in opposition to the cruel practice, and the European Parliament is considering a ban on these blood-hormone imports. We must stand with them in order to help these defenseless horses. Tell Iceland's lawmakers to ban "blood farms!" The government must stop allowing farmers to harm pregnant horses by harvesting their blood! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Despite pledges to reduce dependency on Russian oil and gas, three months in, Russian fossil fuel revenues have only increased. In the first two months since the war began, the EU's payments to Russian companies for fossil fuels doubled. Shell and Exxon have supplied huge amounts of money to Russia since the invasion of Crimea in 2014 [1]. Shell paid the Russian government $7.9 billion. Whilst Shell?s CEO said ?we are shocked by the loss of life in Ukraine, which we deplore? information from financial data provider Refinitv shows the company has shipped 3.5 million barrels of Russian oil since the invasion of Ukraine began 3 months ago. Vladimir, Shell?s and Exxon?s shareholders will be meeting soon. Will you take one more step to hold Shell and Exxon accountable for their actions? We made it easy for you to tweet at them - just hit the buttons below and tell them that we are watching! Your tweet will read: Hey @Shell, you claim to be shocked by the loss of life in Ukraine, but according to @Global_Witness you shipped 3.5 million barrels of Russian oil since the invasion of Ukraine. Please tweet at Shell and Exxon in one click today and tell them that they can no longer escape accountability for their role in the ongoing war in Ukraine. We crunched the numbers and revealed how much gas giants like Shell, Exxon and BP contributed to Russia?s war machine. The figure was staggering - $100 billion between 2014-2021. Pope Francis has urged a ceasefire and negotiations, declared that no war can be justified, and encouraged workers to block weapons shipments. The President of Italy Sergio Mattarella, speaking to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, has urged pursuit of a ceasefire and negotiated settlement. Prime Minister Mario Draghi and Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio have even proposed a draft agreement. The President of France Emanuel Macron has proposed a ceasefire, negotiations, and the creation of new non-military alliances. The President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz have urged a ceasefire and negotiations. We must appeal to all of the governments of the world to back this call for peace. A war must eventually be ended, either through negotiation or by putting an end to us all through nuclear apocalypse. The belief by both sides that ending it later will be better is almost always catastrophically wrong. The unwillingness to end wars is driven largely by hatred, resentment, and the corrupt influences that create wars in the first place. A negotiated settlement must come, and the sooner the better. A ceasefire need not wait for a resolution of all issues, only for a credible commitment to negotiate by all sides. The Fishing Process Wastes or Loses More Than One Third of Already-Overfished Species Sign Now Earlier this year, a fishing trawler off the coast of France released a whopping 100,000 dead fish into the water, creating a silver blanket on the ocean's surface that stretched for several thousand square meters. The images of the scene are harrowing, and not only because it represents such colossal damage to the local marine ecosystem. This dump is part of a broader scam by the fishing industry, a notoriously anti-environmental sector. Unsustainable practices like bottom-trawling indiscriminately kill all different types of sea life in a boat's path, including creatures the fishermen never intend to sell. This means that millions of fish are killed each year ? never even to be eaten at all. Fish populations are already at extremely high risk. Pollution and climate change are threatening many species of fish with extinction in the coming decades. This grows ever worse as global warming makes ocean waters increasingly uninhabitable. But the fish industry is exacerbating crisis by every measure, both through overfishing and through sheer waste. Discarding unwanted fish is a callous way to treat marine life. Experts estimate that around 35% of overfished organisms are ultimately wasted or lost. The industry is simply killing innocent creatures who are already at risk of extinction, and leaving local ecosystems in even more disarray with thousands of tons of dead fish waste floating about. We must put pressure on the United Nations Environment Programme to take immediate action. It must protect our oceans' biodiversity before it is too late! Sign the petition now. A 12yo girl was raped and murdered in the heart of the rainforest. More than 20,000 illegal miners have invaded Yanomami lands This is horrifying! A 12-year old girl, from the Yanomami tribe, was allegedly raped and murdered by illegal miners, deep in the heart of the Amazon. More than 20,000 have invaded Yanomami lands, waging a bloody war against the community and the rainforest. It's a bloodbath. The Brazilian government is ignoring this crisis -- but a million voices from around the world could put the Yanomami plea for help under a global spotlight. Let's stop this massacre. Sign here Dear friends, A 12-year old girl from the Yanomami Indigenous community was allegedly raped and murdered by illegal miners. A 3-year-old is also missing after being thrown in a river. 20,000 illegal miners have invaded Yanomami lands, leaving a trail of bloodshed and terror. The guardians of the Amazon rainforest are being slaughtered. Rivers are poisoned with mercury from the mines, and the rainforest is being decimated. Let's stop this massacre! A thundering global call, backed by millions, could raise the alarm and force leaders to take urgent action. They're about to meet on human rights and the environment at the Summit of the Americas -- let's show up! The Yanomami can't keep resisting on their own. But we could force this into the global spotlight, right now. Add your name and pass this on, fast: Let's stop the Amazon massacres -- add your name! The Yanomami have lived in the rainforest's embrace for centuries. It is their entire world. But now it's being butchered as illegal miners rush for gold -- and the Yanomami are fighting for their lives. Brazil's president has championed the miners for years. He's leading a ruthless assault on the rainforest, encouraging loggers, miners, and farmers to ravage one of the most important ecosystems on earth. We can't be silent. What happens in the Amazon will affect every single one of us. But our voices can make a massive difference. Together we can force this into the global spotlight, creating maximum pressure on powerful leaders to intervene, right now. The Yanomami can't keep resisting this deadly assault alone. Let's join their fight, millions of us, from every country on the planet. Add your voice, and then tell everyone: Let's stop the Amazon massacres -- add your name! For over a decade, the Avaaz community has worked hand-in-hand with Indigenous communities across the Amazon, fighting against attempts to take away their rights and their lands. And when Covid-19 hit, we helped more than 100 communities shield themselves from the virus, saving countless lives. Now, the Yanomami are calling on us to fight side-by-side, and push governments to act on this emergency before it's too late. Let's do it! Europe is making huge decisions that will impact our futures for years to come. Will it be business as usual with more money flowing into dangerous fossil fuels or new rules for mass investment in renewables? It depends on us. Sign now for renewable energy! The EU is having big conversations about our future right now, and we need to be part of it. Europe could decide to invest in fossil fuels and nuclear energy for decades to come. Or they could make bold new rules to help the mass development of clean energy. It makes sense for peace and for the planet to stop pumping billions into fossil fuels. But the fossil fuel and nuclear industries are working like crazy to keep things just as they are. Vladimir ? they're trying to get our Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to rig the rules, whatever the cost for the planet and all of us. This community has the power to scrap their plans. We need to convince enough MEPs to reject the demands of fossil fuel companies ? but the discussions are underway, and our time to make an impact is running out. Our first step is to show people care with a huge petition! And before the vote, we will post billboards to grab the attention of MEPs, work with the media, and deliver your voices directly to decision-makers. Sign now for renewables! Europe is making new rules that will define what a green investment is. It?s called the Taxonomy ? and it is huge because it means billions would flow into renewables like solar and wind. The critical cash boost we need to build renewable projects in the short time we have to contain climate chaos. [1] Unfortunately, fossil fuels and nuclear industries are getting their way. They got nuclear and gas labelled as green investments in the draft proposal. [2] If they win, they will get billions for their dirty energy projects ? instead of funding the renewable future we need. Dirty gas projects would be built across Europe. We would be locked into a cycle of pollution for years. New nuclear projects would leave our children to manage toxic waste and would not be built in time to help us reduce emissions. [3] The European Parliament can put a stop to this. Already 200 of our MEPs are saying they will vote against a green label for gas and nuclear, but we need 153 more to join them. That?s where we come in ? a massive petition signed by the very people these MEPs are elected to represent could swing the vote. Will you join the call for MEPs to back funding renewables over dirty fuel projects? Yes, I'll sign now Our community has risen up again and again to protect our planet. Together, we got new bold EU climate laws, a zero pollution ambition, and much more. Now, opening the floodgates for cash to flow to dirty fuel projects threatens to undermine all of this. But when we come together, we can move mountains, so let?s make sure we are heard and act now. Please donate now While the war in Ukraine shows us the worst kind of animal abuse, there is love and tenderness in Cornwall that is so very worthy of support. If you love horses and ponies, you will be both saddened and happy by what we are about to tell you. Saddened because 6 miniature Shetland ponies, a moorland pony and a donkey, who were rescued from abusive situations, faced death all over again when the woman who saved them became too frail to care for them. this meant that all 8 adorable creatures were going to be killed! Please donate now Thank goodness we helped avert this tragedy. We support the remarkable HUGS Foundation, based near Bodmin Moor in England. HUGS is a haven for abused horses and ponies (and now a donkey too). Even though HUGS is full, the haven could not see 8 innocent creatures slaughtered, and have taken them in. Now the Foundation has turned to us, asking our supporters to help support them. They need microchips, vaccines, dental work and a farrier. Because of abuse they suffered in the past, some of the rescued ponies also need X-rays, medical treatment and remedial work. One poor pony is of critical concern? Our hearts go out to Igor, a tiny white pony who is just the size of a large dog. We fear he suffers from dwarfism, and he has a very strange way of walking, which might indicate other problems. Igor is good-natured and loving, but we worry he may be ?smiling? through the pain. Igor needs a full investigation and some specialist care. Please donate now Some of the ponies need special care forever. please help us to give them the peaceful life they deserve after all the hardship they?ve endured. HUGS always tries to find homes for rescued creatures. But although the donkey and all the ponies are relatively young, because of their history of mistreatment and their present condition, some will sadly never find loving homes. This means that even after they are restored to health, they will remain at the sanctuary for the rest of their lives. HUGS will do its best, but we need your help to make sure that these sweet animals will be able to stay there and have happy lives. After all the pain and suffering they?ve experienced, HUGS must seem like heaven to them - and your help will make it so. Please donate now We don?t know exactly what happened to the 8 rescued newcomers in their past lives of abuse, but we know from their behavior and condition that it must have been very bad. Oscar the donkey was extremely traumatized and his rescue is a true salvation because he has found true love with Dude, an orphaned foal. They are inseparable and share a stall, nuzzling head-to-head. We are so happy for Oscar and Dude and will do everything we can to make sure that Oscar overcomes the trauma of his past. Dude is a gentle soul. He is part of HUGS? therapeutic healing program, visiting care homes and working with troubled young people to help promote emotional well-being. Perhaps one day, Oscar will work alongside Dude to give comfort to children and elderly people. Please help us keep them together. Then there?s the story of Herbie and Gus. Their mothers were wild ponies who lived on Bodmin Moor, a desolate moorland area, infamous for howling winds and harsh winters. Herbie and Gus are orphans. They were already in a kill pen waiting for slaughter when HUGS rescued them. They must be cared for until they are old enough to be rehomed or, if they do not find a forever home, to join the HUGS team helping local children and bringing joy to senior citizens in care homes. Please donate now We hope we have managed to convey how sweet-natured and gentle these rescued creatures are, and how badly they need our love and support. We know they are grateful: it?s as if they know that they have been given the greatest gift of all - the gift of life - and they respond by loving their saviors. Sadly, that is not the whole story; some of the rescued creatures are still so terrified that they cower at the rear of their stalls or skitter away when humans come near them. Mink Fur Farming Hurts Animals - and Spreads Deadly COVID Variants to People Sign Now We already know that fur farming is grotesque and brutal, often involving ripping the hides and hairs off of screaming caged animals who are given no other life. Now we also know that fur farming ? more specifically, farming mink ? has contributed significantly to the spread of COVID-19 and its multiple variants. Many other animal species besides humans can catch the deadly disease. But unlike other non-human species, mink can then spread COVID... back to humans. By the time they do, the virus has often mutated considerably in their bodies. Mink-involved COVID outbreaks have already occurred in the U.S. multiple times. There are more than 200 mink farms operating in the U.S., locking up these helpless furry animals and harvesting them for their pelts. Even though researchers have discovered, time and again, that mink are uniquely vulnerable to COVID infections, the U.S. government has done very little to monitor outbreaks or general animal health at these farms. Even though cases have exploded at upwards of 18 farms (that we know of so far), the U.S. government has merely asked mink farmers to please comply with voluntary guidelines. Mink farmers have been quick to protect the secrecy at their farms, refusing to support a more standardized system of federal testing and reporting. Naturally, they're also uninterested in working to protect these animals' welfare and rights to kind treatment. What happens at their farms affects these caged animals ? and all of us humans, too. But these fur-harvesting profit-seekers don't seem to care. Mink fur farmers exploit and harm animals. They rebuff federal health investigations. And they allow COVID outbreaks to run rampant, creating deadly new variants that come back to infect the rest of us. Clearly the mink farming industry cannot be trusted. But how much do you know about HIV/AIDS? People Changing the World My name is Tonny Silas Dauda and I'm a 25 year old ONE Champion from Nigeria. Tell us about yourself... While I was studying physics at the University of Jos, I joined a global youth leadership movement called AIESEC. There, I worked with other young people from Nigeria, the Republic of Benin, Denmark, and Kenya. I learned about international development, advocacy, and how youth can influence decisions at different levels. This eventually led me to become a ONE Champion in 2020. As a Champion, I'm part of a youth-led Africa-Europe Task Force working to foster a stronger cross-continental partnership. For over a year, my team and I have been meeting with important African and European political leaders to urge them toinvest in stronger health care systems and global access to COVID-19 vaccines. Recently, I felt the impact of our work when EU leaders publicly pledged important funding to help with both of these issues. Outside of ONE, I manage a volunteer program at UNITE 2030, helping young people develop career skills. What work or project has had a big impact on you? In 2018, I made a rather crazy decision that changed my life forever. I had just graduated from university and I was not sure what I wanted to do next with my life. I decided to live and work in the Republic of Benin for one year through AIESEC,even though I couldn?t speak the language and didn?t know anyone there. That year was the most challenging time of my life, but also the most fulfilling! Despite the language barrier, I was able to work well with my team and ran campaigns to engage youth action on the Sustainable Development Goals. It taught me a lot about the power of youth action. Even when we're divided by cultural or national differences, if we are united by a drive for impact, we can do anything! What motivates you in and outside of your work? Ending extreme poverty and preventable disease are the two most basic challenges every human needs to overcome to live a dignified life. My family has always been there to remind me that I am here to add value to the world and that I can make my own little, yet significant, contribution in making the world a better place. Outside of work, I love to hang out with friends, travel, and I enjoy listening good music over lunch or dinner. I'm currently reading Ego is the enemy by Ryan Holiday and rewatching Friends all over again for the 1 millionth time! ? Watch this video on Tonny's favourite moment as an activist. Once upon a time, in one of France?s poorest neighbourhoods, Kamel and his coworkers took on McDonald?s and turned their workplace into something magical. They spent 20 years fighting the most powerful fast food chain ? dreaming of creating a place that could offer good jobs, fair pay and a chance to uplift their community out of unemployment and poverty. McDonald's hated that. It tried everything to get rid of Kamel ? even threatening his life! And when that didn?t work, McDonald?s fired everyone and shut down the restaurant. But instead of giving up on their dream, Kamel and his coworkers rolled up their sleeves and turned the discarded, hollow space McDonald?s abandoned into a vibrant community food bank ? now feeding 2,000 families a week for free. They rehired staff, redecorated, spread the word and restored the heart of their community. This magical place is called l?Apr?s M (?the After M? for after McDonald's) ? and it needs you. Kamel and his coworkers aren?t home free ? their building is about to be sold. But if we help them buy it, they can turn l?Apres M into a permanent community oasis ? with a proper food bank, restaurant, meeting facilities, job training centre, and much more. can you help Kamel and his team secure the magical place they built ? and give this community a chance to rise? And during the height of the pandemic l?Apr?s M saved many more, giving them food, support and a sense of purpose. But Kamel and his heroic team wanted to do more. They worked with firemen, farmers and local groups to extend l?Apr?s M?s reach and distribute food ? and their powerful message ? to surrounding neighbourhoods. Now the story of their work is spreading and inspiring movements worldwide. They even helped McDonald's workers in the U.S. win a $15/hour minimum wage ? a fight that had been dragging on for nearly a decade! American Meat Producers Knew Their Employees Could Die. They Lobbied to Keep Factories Open Anyway. Sign Now American meat corporations have bad reputations, and for good reason. These companies have reached near-supervillain status for their inhumane treatment of cattle, pigs, and chickens. Not only do animals that suffer in meat-packing plants ? these corporations abuse their workers, too. New reports indicate that this industry quite literally doesn't care if its workers live or die, and it is time Congress did something about this. In fact, a new report by the U.S. Congress reveals that even when meat companies knew their workers were at extremely high risk of catching COVID-19, they lobbied to keep their plants open anyway. These corporations even went so far as to fabricate letters that falsely claimed America's meat supply was at dire risk if plants temporarily shut down. As a result, former President Trump signed an executive order classifying meat plants as critical infrastructure, forcing their doors open amidst grave danger. Given what we know so far, upwards of 59,000 meat-packing workers caught COVID-19, and nearly 300 died. That's not even counting the family, friends, and community members they spread COVID to after contracting it at the plants. On top of that, many meat-packing workers are immigrants, low-income, uninsured, or some combination of the three. These are communities that are already at an extremely high risk of contracting severe COVID, yet the industry decided profit was more important than human lives. The government must never allow this deadly manipulation to happen again. Sign the petition now to put pressure on Congress and tell it: all workers deserve dignity and protection! This year's virtual conference will be hosted online through the Zoom Events platform. Conference sessions will share inspiring stories of change-making?both big and small?around the world, that challenges the structural causes of militarism, corrupt capitalism, and climate catastrophe, while at the same time, concretely creating an alternative system based on a just and sustainable peace. Register for our annual conference! Here's a sneak peek of what we've got lined up for #NoWar2022, focused on the unique theme of "resistance & regeneration": Experts Rickey Gard Diamond and Marybeth Riley Gardam of the Women's International League for Peace & Freedom and An Economy of Our Own will talk about how public banking can keep millions of public dollars local every year, invested in the world we want, instead of going out of state to Wall Street banks that invest in war, weapons, climate-damaging extractive industries, and lobbyists who support profiteering. Preemptive Love Coalition?s mission is to end war and stop the spread of violence. But what does that actually look like on a granular level? What does it take for you, as a citizen of this world, to create a snowball effect of love and peacemaking in your local community? Join trainers Nick and Saadia for a 1.5 hour interactive workshop where we will share what it means to be a peacemaker, learn tips on how to communicate with others when you often don?t agree, and to love anyway in the context of your own world. This youth-led divestment panel will both concretely explore how to divest public and private dollars from extractive industries like weapons and fossil fuels, and at the same time, how to rebuild the just world we want through doable reinvestment strategies that prioritize community needs. Featuring Shea Leibow of CODEPINK, Nadira Foster of Divest Ed, and Britt Runeckles of Towards a People?s Endowment, moderated by Greta Zarro of World BEYOND War. Jeff Cohen of FAIR.org, Steven Youngblood of the Center for Global Peace Journalism, and Dru Oja Jay of The Breach will present a workshop on "How to Challenge Mainstream Media Bias & Promote Peace Journalism." Modeling the conference theme of ?resistance and regeneration,? this workshop will begin with a media literacy primer, vis-?-vis FAIR.org?s techniques to expose and critique mainstream media bias. Then we will lay out a framework for the alternative ? principles of counternarrative storytelling from a peace journalism perspective. We will conclude with a discussion of practical applications of these principles, such as through independent media outlets like The Breach, whose mission is focused on ?journalism for transformation.? This is just a small sampling of what's in store for the #NoWar2022 virtual conference on July 8-10. You can view the full line-up on the #NoWar2022 conference website here. I am truly inspired by this year's event, which will feature speakers and attendees from all over the world. What makes #NoWar2022 unique is that we will hear real-world examples that model how to resist militarism and at the same time, rebuild the world we want. We'll hear from activists, students, journalists, farmers, educators, and more who have successfully implemented tangible practices, like nonviolent communication, unarmed civilian protection, public banking, peace journalism, solidarity cities, and peace education curricula that both advance demilitarization while modeling a culture of peace. [We] couldn?t have done this without your support!? - Activist Veronika Feicht from the Munich Environmental Institute with a message to the WeMove Europe community [1] With thousands of us supporting them, activists fought back against their local government and the rich food industry and won! They spoke up against the use of pesticides in Northern Italy, famous for its apples. But the local government and the food industry - who are not used to being challenged - weren?t going to accept this. With millions of euros at stake, they were willing to do anything to protect profits at the expense of our health. So they brought more than 1,300 lawsuits to intimidate and silence local activists. [2] This is when our community stepped in. The quiet mountain region of South Tyrol relies heavily on tourism and absolutely hates bad publicity. They were not used to seeing European people power in action. So we organised a protest and spread our message in multiple languages, attracting a lot of attention and bringing bad press to South Tyrol. [3] Earlier this month, courts in Northern Italy dropped the last remaining lawsuit. [4] This result shows that when we come together we can help local activists stand up to governments and companies. But this win isn?t just about a few activists in Northern Italy. It?s about stopping intimidating lawsuits across Europe. And it?s about everyone in Europe being able to take on decision makers without being bullied into silence. And the person who could stop these lawsuits in Europe took notice, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Vera Jourov?. She publicly showed support for our win. [5] And we hope this victory gives her the momentum to ensure the EU protects activists from intimidating lawsuits. [6] When activists contacted us back in 2020, they were filled with panic and anxiety. They could face huge fines and were scared about taking on a government and a rich industry. Now, there is a sense of relief that justice was done. Today, we can celebrate that when we come together, no one is too big to take on. Justice can prevail! With pride, David (London), Giulio (Rome) and the entire WeMove Europe team P.S. When needed, this community comes together to support local activists, like those in Northern Italy fighting to keep pesticides out of our food. Today those activists can criticise the government and the apple industry without fear. This win took two years. And our ability to stay in these fights comes from small donations from this community. When thousands of us chip in just a little each, it adds up to the resources needed for change. So will you chip in to make sure we can continue to support local activists? Donate now References: [1] Earlier this month, activists stood outside a courtroom in Northern Italy after a huge win for freedom of expression and in the fight to stop pesticides. [2] Many European companies, powerful individuals and governments have started using intimidating and costly lawsuits to stop freedom of expression. These lawsuits are often referred to as Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation or SLAPPs. These damaging suits chill free speech and healthy debate by targeting those who communicate with their government or speak out on issues of public interest. SLAPPs are used to silence and harass critics by forcing them to spend money to defend these baseless suits. There is a short version and a longer version in the document. We apologise for the urgency of the matter. I know that many of you are incredibly busy before Stockholm+50 and we deeply appreciate your support. Please consider signing-on by the end of the day tomorrow, May 31 in this simple google form. Countries around the world, with a few exceptions, continue buying coal, oil and gas from Russia thus powering its war machine that has already killed tens of thousands of civilians and injured countless others and caused multiple global crises. Moreover, fossil fuel exploration is increasing in many regions of the world, especially African, Asian and Latin American countries, whom we stand in solidarity with. The EU is poignantly slow in banning and phasing out Russian fossil fuels and every day still sending about one billion euros to feed putin?s war machine but far more active in mobilizing oil and gas reserves worldwide. This deepens the climate crisis and severely undermines the EU global leadership in green transformation declared by the EU Green Deal. We would like to use the political moment and make a pressure on the EU towards the ban of Russian fossil fuels and acceleration of a clean energy transition. We demand: a.. a complete and immediate embargo on Russian coal, oil and gas as well as sanctions against the Russian nuclear sector; b.. secondary sanctions on all buyers of Russian fossils, including buyers outside the sanctions coalition countries, shipping companies and refineries c.. radical clean energy transition and rapidly accelerated investments in the development of clean energy, energy efficiency and energy savings measures across Europe and globally as a wartime effort to increase energy security and speed up climate action.
