But now all eyes are on South Africa, and it's under immense pressure from Putin to oppose the resolution. And as a key actor, South Africa can shape the vote, and move smaller, undecided countries. With a flood of messages we can get South Africa's president and his top diplomats to join the world in opposing Putin?s colonial war. Send an urgent tweet now: Tweet A personal message calling on leaders to vote for the UN resolution, and stand with Ukraine, will have the most impact. You can use the following tips to write your message: a.. Use your own words when calling for peace and remember to be respectful. b.. The fate of millions of Ukrainians depends on the actions UN countries like South Africa take now. stand up to Putin, and vote for peace and national sovereignty. c.. The UN was founded so the law of the strongest wouldn?t prevail. This is South Africa's chance to help make sure these principles are upheld. d.. The relevant hashtags, the Twitter handles and a ?Stand with Ukraine? image are already in. Simply click and add your message. This could be our last opportunity to stop this war -- but time is running out, and we need to inspire South Africa to get on the right side of history. The world is more united than ever against Putin?s aggression. With a flood of messages to South Africa's leaders we can make sure they vote for peace too. Send an urgent tweet now! Millions displaced. Tomorrow, our EU interior ministers can decide if all those fleeing Russia?s invasion can come and move freely within the EU. The EU must support all refugees and do it fast. Every day counts for people waiting in shock and fear in the cold. Sign now Hi, Our hearts, minds and eyes are focused on Ukraine right now. We received an enormous amount of messages from you asking ?how can I help?? Here is a way to make a real difference to hundreds of thousands of people uncertain about their future. Tomorrow morning, EU interior ministers will decide on a common plan to support refugees arriving in Europe from Ukraine. They could decide to activate a law never used before that will give asylum seekers the right to move freely in Europe, have the right to work and get access to accommodation and key services. [1] Out of 27 ministers from our countries, we need 15 to vote in favour. It?s looking positive, we know there is a lot of support, but it?s far from a done deal. With less than 22 hours to go before they meet, we will make sure they get the message. The petition is set so that after every 100 signatures, interior ministers across Europe will be sent an update - so the more people who sign, the more pressure we can pile on. Urge the EU to protect people fleeing war More than 500,000 Ukrainians have fled their country since the Russian invasion started. [2] It?s not only Ukrainian citizens who are queueing to leave, but also foreign students, and people who previously received asylum in Ukraine. Europe must protect everyone regardless of citizenship or skin colour. This means not only agreeing to give people the right to live and work in Europe but also removing barriers to actual entry, like the need for a passport. Many people have never travelled abroad and do not own a passport. They must also make sure people of colour and foreigners in Ukraine are not treated differently. [3] Urge the EU to protect people fleeing war Since day one, WeMove Europe has been working with partners to show governments that Europeans want to protect refugees and offer them a safe haven. This is a massive crisis on our border and the actions our governments take today could pave the way for a more compassionate approach to helping all people on the move in the months and years ahead. Investors care what customers think ? if they see that Apple?s customers are appalled by the company?s complicity in the brutal repression of Uyghurs, it could persuade them to back our resolution. So we went out onto the streets of L.A with our Uyghur friend Kabir to talk to Apple customers and reveal to them the terrible truth about their favorite products. Watch the video on YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter -- then share it with everyone. We need as many shareholders to see this video as possible. YouTube / Facebook / Twitter Shareholders know that forced labor is a terrible look for any brand, but especially for one like Apple. Once they realize the company?s links to horrific human rights abuses is wrecking its brand and putting off customers, they?ll push Apple bosses to act. Some of the world?s most powerful investors have already said they?re going to back the resolution - let?s make sure other investors follow suit! Watch now then share it far and wide! Our shareholder activism is working. In 2020, 13 SumOfUs members co-filed a resolution calling on Apple to implement a human rights policy, and got an unprecedented 40% vote in favor. The overwhelming response from shareholders forced the company to reconsider its position and resulted in it creating a human rights policy after all. We can do it again. Investors don?t want Apple?s squeaky-clean brand tainted with allegations of forced labor because they know it will put off customers and slash profits. Hi, This is incredible ? in less than 24 hours, 70,000 of us came together demanding protection for the people fleeing Ukraine. And our leaders heard us, as well as the thousands of people out on the streets of Europe. Yesterday Europe?s interior ministers unanimously agreed to invoke a special law (the Temporary Protection Directive) for the first time in history. [1] This means that Ukrainian citizens and non-EU citizens living in Ukraine who are unable to safely return to their country of origin will quickly get residence permits in EU countries. They will be able to work and have access to medical care. This is a monumental win for people on the move everywhere. But, unless national governments decide otherwise, there are still some people who will be left behind ? foreign students and temporary workers. That?s because not all refugees are treated equally. And it?s why we need to make sure Europe protects ALL people fleeing war. We also can?t forget ? for now, this is a win on paper. But, what is key is how EU countries turn it into practice. We will be watching them closely to make sure it?s done properly. In the meantime, you can still sign the petition to demand everyone is protected under this law: SIGN NOW Thank you for adding your voice, David (London), Aleksandra (Warsaw), Giulio (Rome), Mika (Bordeaux) and the whole WeMove Europe team References: [1] https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2022/02/28/brussels-will-apply-a-never-used-eu-law-to-host-ukrainian-refugees-how-does-it-work Here is our original email, sent on 2 March 2022: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- War in Europe. She had facilitated a huge number of trips and exchanges decades ago, bringing Russians to the U.S. and people from the U.S. to Russia, an effort that had influenced international relations for the better, as described in her book The Power of Impossible Ideas. Sharon had relaunched the project due to the escalating tensions. I met Russians from a variety of backgrounds, some of whom now protest Russia's warmaking and some of whom cheer for it. Sharon, who has personally known Vladimir Putin, as well as many other high-profile Russians, opposes Russia's warmaking, without losing sight of the missteps -- including by the United States and NATO -- that predictably (and it was predicted) got us to this point. I don't see exactly eye-to-eye with Sharon (or perhaps anyone else) on the current war, but on one thing I agree with many people: talking helps. Knowing each other helps. Storming out of meetings, evicting diplomats, generalizing about whole populations, and accusing others of being incapable of rational discourse does not help. Talking helps tremendously. Just how much might surprise almost everyone. In April 2022, World BEYOND War will be holding a weekly discussion each of four weeks of The Power of Impossible Ideas: Ordinary Citizens' Extraordinary Efforts to Avert International Crises with the author Sharon Tennison as part of a small group WBW book club limited to 18 participants. We'll mail you the book or, if you prefer, email you the PDF. We'll let you know which parts of the book will be discussed each week along with the Zoom details to access the discussions. Sign up to reserve your spot and allow for enough time to receive the book. We look forward to reading and discussing this important book with you! About the Book: Sharon Tennison and the Center for Citizen Initiatives proudly introduce the story of our three decades of work in Russia. Read the history of Russia?s last three turbulent decades as observed by naive American citizens who traveled there in 1983 searching for keys to end the nuclear arms race. They could have never guessed they would be central to many of the totally unexpected changes to come. Experience their skirmishes with the CIA, FBI, KGB and FSB -- being arrested and put in jail. Beyond all the drama exists the story of how they slowly and methodically created unique programs to help Russian citizens survive the dissolution of the USSR, begin recreating themselves after the fall of Communism, and weather the storms of recurring financial crises. Impossible ideas moves the Americans rapidly forward from obscurity to finding themselves inside the Kremlin, the White House, and the U.S. Congress. A fascinating read, the book is a testament to the power of ordinary citizens to act on their most outlandish ideas and watch them become a reality; even in an international quagmire as deeply entrenched as was the US-USSR relationship. Manatees Are Starving to Death, but Florida Politicians Want to Keep Selling Them Out Sign Now Starvation is killing off the popular Florida manatees, which were already listed as a "threatened" species. Relatives of their land cousins the elephants, these so-called "sea cows" supposedly inspired stories about mermaids. But like their mythical counterparts, soon, these marine mammals might only live on in our imaginations. Just last year alone, researchers recorded 1,100 Florida manatees that had died ? more than ever before in such a short time. This die-off is occurring as a result of pollution, climate change, and human development, which have wreaked havoc on the manatees' food sources, namely seagrass. Now, a major effort to save these marine mammals is underway. But it won't succeed without help from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Florida environmental organizations have gathered up more than 63,000 lbs of donated lettuce so far, which they've used to feed hundreds of manatees each day. But for some individual animals, their situations were so dire, they have now been relocated to rehab centers. While the efforts to feed these starving creatures are heroic and inspiring, donated lettuce simply can't solve the problem. Even worse, some Florida politicians are willing to let real estate developers deplete seagrass even further ? as long as the developers pay up. Manatees' lives can't be left up to the whim of some corporate-friendly lawmakers in Florida. These marine mammals MUST be protected now. Sign the petition to demand the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency take action to save the manatees immediately! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Dependence on Russian Oil and Natural Gas Is Preventing Countries From Taking a Stand Against Its Invasion of Ukraine! Sign Now As Russia continues to wage war in neighboring country Ukraine, Europe faces a dilemma. While the overwhelming majority of European leaders want to distance themselves from the human-rights abusing Putin, they feel stuck because of energy policy. Massive swaths of the European continent are dependent on Russian oil and gas supplies. Cutting themselves off from Russian fossil fuels would benefit human rights in Ukraine, but energy dependency is preventing European nations ? and the U.S. as well ? from drawing a firm line against the Russian dictator. This is just one of many reasons why both the European Union and the United States must dramatically expand their investments in renewable, green energy production NOW. Right now, legislators feel they have to choose between two terrible options. Either they can take action against Putin and potentially lose power for huge swaths of their populations, or they can maintain access to dirty energy by refusing to take a stand against tyranny. Oil and gas sales to other nations are a huge source of revenue for the Russian government ? meaning that purchases of these dirty products help fund human rights catastrophes. By contrast, renewable energy would increase countries' energy independence. That's a huge boon for national security, and would also empower countries to feel less hamstrung in standing up for democracy worldwide. Expanding infrastructure to produce domestic renewables would also help thwart a sixth mass extinction event and a looming climate crisis that has the potential to turn millions of people into refugees. Massive transitions towards green energy are long overdue, and the atrocities we are witnessing in Ukraine are just one more example of that. We must put pressure on leaders in the United States and the European Union to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and expand renewable energy today! Sign the petition now if you agree! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. One of the best ways to stop Putin and curtail his war fund would be for the U.S. and E.U. to invest more in renewable energy sources, and less in Russian oil. It would save people ? and the planet. SIGN THE PETITION Dear friends, Honduras, one of the deadliest countries in the world, is a nightmare for women. 12-year-old girls are forced to keep rape pregnancies, while hundreds of women are abused each year. But things could be about to change. The first-ever female president, Xiomara Castro, just took office and could be only one signature away from revoking a horrendous ban on emergency contraceptives -- a ban that has trapped desperate women, including survivors of rape, into unwanted and dangerous pregnancies. Honduras is the only country in Latin America that bans the morning after pill -- but the new president has promised to legalize it, and all she needs is massive public support to make the call. She is under heavy pressure, so let's empower her to deliver on women's rights. Sign now to support a new era for women and girls across Honduras, and on International Women?s Day, Avaaz will deliver our voices directly to the president: STAND WITH THE WOMEN OF HONDURAS Violence against women is one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world. About 35% of women globally have experienced physical or sexual violence, both intimate partner violence, and non-partner violence. This is even worse in Honduras. In 2017, more than 80% of pregnant women treated by Doctors Without Borders in Honduras said their pregnancy was a result of rape. But we can help end these violent pregnancies ? and President Castro is one signature away from doing it. As the world commemorates International Women's Day, let's make sure President Castro understands her biggest mandate is to prioritise women's safety, security, and dignity. She can start by legalising emergency contraception, and then take up many more issues that are crucial to ensuring women's rights. Sign now and share widely: STAND WITH THE WOMEN OF HONDURAS Our movement has campaigned for women's rights from Mexico to Afghanistan. The UK Prime Minister Promised to Ban Cruel Foie Gras. Now He's Backing Out, and Innocent Ducks and Geese Will Suffer. Sign Now One of the most violent and grotesque forms of animal agriculture was nearly banned from being imported into the UK, but Boris Johnson backed out of the plan at the last minute. Foie gras is a particularly controversial topic because while some consider the food a delicious luxury, its production is literally impossible without overt cruelty and suffering. Male ducks and geese are trapped in tiny, unsanitary cages, meaning that their coats tend to end up matted in feces because they have no space to groom. Female ducklings, on the other hand, are literally tossed into a grinder and instantly ripped apart to their death, since their bodies cannot be used to make what humans have disgustingly deemed a "delicacy." The living males are then force-fed, in which metal tubes are jammed into the poor animals' tiny throats to make their livers swell up to 10 times their typical size. This process happens twice a day, and unsurprisingly, many of the ducks and geese die while enduring such pain. While foie gras production is in fact illegal in Britain, it can still be imported into the country -- which, in many ways, defeats the purpose of banning it domestically. The only way for Britain to stand fully with animal rights advocates is to not only ban foie gras production but also ban all imports and sales of a product that can only be made from violently abusing ducks and geese. Sign the petition to put pressure on Boris Johnson to stand up for animal welfare! Thank you, Lauren Care2 Petitions Team P.S. But major brands like Nestl?, Mars and Pepsico want to block this. Ask your minister to protect our forests, not companies? profits. Send an email Hi, >From spreads to cookies, from packaged bread to instant ramen. European supermarkets are full of products made with palm oil. It?s terrible because palm oil is a major driver of deforestation. It destroys our most beautiful forests and the homes of endangered animals like orangutans, elephants and tigers. [1] But now we have a chance to save our forests and the animals that live in them. Our environment ministers could soon pass a new EU law that would ban the sale of all products linked to deforestation. This would set a precedent that other countries could follow. [2] The problem is that lobbyists from major brands like Nestl?, Pepsico and others are currently doing everything they can to weaken the law and get ministers on their side. But we have a plan. Across Europe, the mobilisation against deforestation is growing. Activists and over 170 partners have taken aerial photos that visualise the rate of forest destruction. They have a simple message: in Europe, we should ban the sale of products that destroy our earth?s forests. Vladimir, send a personal message from the heart to your minister. If they get thousands of messages, they won?t be able to ignore us. Send an email to your minister to protect our earth?s forests Almost half of our grocery products contain palm oil. It is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet. [3] And we know who is responsible. Major global food brands - including Nestl?, Pepsico or Mars. They claim that they fight deforestation and that they don?t need an ambitious EU law. [4] But it?s a lie, they still use palm oil that destroys our forests. All so they can continue to make their products cheaply and sell them in Europe. [5] Major food brands have deep pockets but when citizens come together to say enough is enough we have the power to make governments do the right thing. Palm oil may be cheap for big business but the cost is huge for animals and plants going extinct as well as for the planet. Between 2001 and 2010, palm oil production in Indonesia alone generated up to 268 million tons of carbon emissions. That?s the same as 55 million cars or 70 coal-fired power plants. [6] Send a message to your minister now and then get the word out! Send an email to your minister to protect our earth?s forests Now with 170 partners across 14 countries, we have a huge movement ready to stop deforestation. And we?re going to continue to do everything we can to protect our forests and the animals that live in them. It?s time to challenge the capitalist system that puts corporate profits above people, nature and the planet. In solidarity, David (London), Alexandre (Marseille), Mika (Bordeaux) and the entire WeMove Europe team References: [1] [5] https://www.ran.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Leuser_Watch_Singkil-Bengkung_2019.pdf [2] In November 2021, the European Commission released a draft law to cut deforestation out of the EU?s supply chains. The draft law would for the first time require companies selling certain products on the EU market to trace their origin and show that they are not linked to forest destruction or forest degradation. EDF is about to dump hundreds of thousands of tonnes of nuclear-contaminated ?mud? into a marine reserve in the Severn Estuary ? and let it wash up on beaches along the coast. But we can stop them! Courageous grassroots conservationists have just won permission to challenge the plan in court. If they win, EDF will be forced to ditch its toxic scheme, protecting hundreds of thousands of local residents and a crucial breeding ground for fish ? including protected species and the endangered European Eel. But the court date is this week, and the heroes at Save the Severn don?t yet have the cash to pay their legal team. That?s why they?re asking for your help. Russia's Military Has Been Bombing Hospitals Filled With Children and Pregnant Women. This Must Stop! Sign Now Evidence shows that the Russian military has been bombing hospitals during its invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Hospitals are generally protected by the principle of "medical neutrality" during conflict, since they are both civilian sites and sources of humanitarian aid. No matter what Russian President Vladimir Putin's agenda is, there can be no place for bombing children, pregnant women, and hospitals. He must order a return to humanitarian protection for all hospital facilities! On March 9, Russian airstrikes hit and destroyed a maternity hospital in the port city of Mariupol. Videos show windows blown out, medical equipment damaged and obliterated, twisted metal littering hallways, and patients in agony. So far, we know that the strike injured 17 individuals -- and killed three. Soldiers helping to evacuate the victims carried out at least one woman who was bleeding and a woman very far along in her pregnancy. Officials reported that children were trapped beneath the rubble of shattered building pieces. And that's not the only instance of Russia bombing a hospital. The World Health Organization has said that at least 18 hospitals in Ukraine have been bombed so far by Russian military. Tell Putin that his campaign of bombing people in hospitals must end, NOW! We're breaking records! In the last week, more of us have donated to our community's Ukraine fundraiser than to any other fundraising campaign in SumOfUs' ten year history. This incredible outpouring has brought hope and life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable people on the ground -- people other major humanitarian efforts often overlook and ignore. This is what we can do together: crowdsource unprecedented funding and direct it to the bravest activists in the middle of the toughest fights. In a matter of just days we've been able to rush hundreds of thousands of dollars to groups working on the frontline, with more on the way, including: a.. Mission Lifeline, running convoys to the Slovak-Ukrainian border to support those fleeing the conflict; b.. Urgent Action Fund, sending emergency grants to women, trans, and non-binary activists and human rights defenders in Ukraine; c.. Outright International, supporting organisations in Ukraine and neighbouring countries to help LGBTQ people in search of shelter, safety and security; d.. Libereco, mobilising volunteers to get humanitarian and medical aid to people in Ukraine and offering psychosocial support; e.. and several more, including other small volunteer groups providing emergency relief and evacuation transport. In the weeks to come, we're sure to hear stories of the people these frontline heroes have been able to help, of lives forever changed. In the meantime -- thank you. For being part of this community, and for responding to this moment with such solidarity and generosity. Transporting neither people nor goods but generating tonnes of polluting emissions. But governments can rebel against the twisted European rule that forces empty flights to happen. Let?s make them hear their voters roar louder than an aeroplane. Take action Hi, Airlines are flying empty planes across Europe, with no people or goods in them. Over 100,000 empty flights have flown over our heads this winter. All because of a law the European Commission won't let go of. [1] In a moment when we are racing to cut emissions and save our planet, this outdated law is like a slap in the face. Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways and other airlines are calling for a stop to this waste, and so are environmentalists. More and more people are learning about this absurd situation through the media. The good news is that governments can rebel against this rule that fuels climate chaos. In fact, Austria has already boldly declared it will rebel. [2] Belgium, Germany and Spain have signalled they might follow suit. Before more needless flights take off, we need to convince the governments in countries with the busiest airports, including Greece and Portugal, to follow their example, and make courageous declarations about it. Now that the tide is turning, let?s make European governments hear their voters roar louder than an aeroplane engine - will you sign the petition? Yes, let's make a wave they can't ignore Airlines are forced to operate empty flights, in order to keep their take off and landing rights at airports. In doing so, they emit dirty fumes equivalent to 1.4 million cars each year, but this is based on outdated European legislation. [3] Empty flights are a symbol of the failed airline industry. One that profits at the expense of the climate and people. One that is freeloading off of public money thanks to major tax cuts and subsidies. In the face of the climate crisis, it is nonsensical to force tens of thousands of empty planes to fly back and forth - just so airports can continue to make high profits. Governments can change this. They can use an exemption rule in the European legislation that would allow them to ban empty flights. The Austrian government is already doing this. Other countries must follow suit! We know it?s possible because some with the busiest airports, such as Germany, Spain and Belgium have already signalled they might rebel as well. Through our community of action, tens of thousands of us can let European governments know what their voters expect. Take action now! I'll sign and share the petition Thank you for taking action, David (London), Virginia (Madrid) and the entire WeMove Europe team P.S. Ending empty flights could be the first truly European step towards a more ambitious ban of short-haul flights where rail alternatives exist. Replacing unnecessary flights would be a major step towards a transport revolution in our continent. Don?t miss this chance to kick-start it! Sign the petition now. Now, the USPS has finally gotten the sign-off to order new delivery vehicles! This is good news for our postal service workers, and long overdue. But only 10% of the proposed new vehicles are going to be electric-powered, meaning the rest will be running on dirty fossil fuels... until they, too, are eventually replaced far in the future. Given how long the USPS went without receiving new equipment, we cannot wait any longer to make the necessary changes to a clean energy-powered fleet. Who knows how many years it will be before the upcoming vehicles are replaced again! Another dire climate report came out just recently, again condemning the world's wealthiest countries for doing so little to mitigate devastating climate impacts. Cars and other vehicles are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, worsening the climate crisis. We are running out of time to update our infrastructure and move towards clean energy ? and every single effort counts. Like everyone else, I?m in shock at the conflict in Ukraine, and its implications for our lives. For days I?ve been racking my brain. This community is made up of over a million people, spread across the continent and committed to making it a better place. But never in our young existence have we faced war so close to home. Together we immediately sprung into action. We are calling for the EU to provide protection for all peoples fleeing war, regardless of their passports or skin colour. Now we?re looking at the deeper connections to this war and what we can do. Europe is deeply dependent on Putin?s fossil fuels. This isn?t by accident, it?s by design. How we design our societies, like what fuel our daily lives run on, has big consequences. But, Vladimir, I?m not sure how we can start moving to make a difference. I trust if we put our heads together we will find the right way forward - so will you share your thoughts and answer our quick survey? Some Companies Refuse to Stop Doing Business in Russia. They Must Cut Ties, Now! Sign Now Civilians dying in airstrikes against maternity wards and children's hospitals. Apartment buildings shelled to the point of death and destruction. Refugees killed as they try to escape the Russian military and flee for safety. All this is happening because Russian President (and tyrant) Vladimir Putin thought he could get away with anything, with few consequences. That's why it's so important for corporations to show him he's wrong, by boycotting the Russian market. Already, more than 300 prominent Western businesses have taken action to end or limit their engagements in Russia. But many others have refused to fully exit the country, putting profits above morals and pretending they can simply plug their metaphorical fingers into their ears. Companies including General Mills, Subway, Burger King, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, and LG Electronics must show solidarity with the Ukrainian people by withdrawing their businesses from Russia until Putin ends his invasion of Ukraine! The point is to end the violence as soon as possible, not to punish regular working-class Russian people. Sanctions and corporate boycotts can help bring peace through several methods. Corporate pull-outs will reduce the Russian government's revenue with which it is funding this brutal war. Boycotts can also help convince regular Russians to take a stance against their violent, corrupt government. And thankfully, many brave Russians are already responding to this call, with upwards of 14,000 citizens arrested for protesting their government's actions. All international corporations that remain in Russia ? including General Mills, Subway, Burger King, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, and LG Electronics ? must also do the right thing by cutting ties with Russia's markets. Big businesses are set to lock us into a cycle of pollution for decades to come. Help send shock waves through the political discussions and stop investments in planet poisoning fuels. SIGN Hi, We all know we need major investments in wind and solar if we are to keep the wheels of society spinning. Now the EU is delivering a tool to boost green investments! This is huge. The tool would label different investments, with green marking out those that are most sustainable. Banks like HSBC - who put some ?6.4bn into new oil and gas in 2021 alone - wouldn?t be able to hide the impact of their funds.[1] But the big businesses that have been a major part of the problem are now working to water down how the tool would work. Right now they?ve lobbied to have gas and nuclear labelled as ?green?. This would lock us into a cycle of pollution for decades to come. They're rigging the rules to make more profits whatever the cost. But the ink isn't dry on the deal yet. The EU is coming under increased pressure to revise its draft plan? To turn this controversy into real change we need to act. This community has the power to send shock waves through the discussion. The corporations bending the ears of European leaders are smothering the topic with technical details. They?re hoping those of us who care about our planet won't catch how important this is. One Major Grocery Store Is Shifting to Mostly Plant-Based Products. Other Supermarkets Must Follow Suit! Sign Now Over the course of the next 8 years, a major grocery store chain in the Netherlands called Albert Heijn will overhaul its product line to ensure that the majority of the proteins it sells are plant-based. This plan wouldn't eliminate meat, dairy, or egg options for those people who prefer animal-based products. Instead, it would simply push more sustainable and vegan options to the forefront, making it easier for shoppers to find and access these eco- and animal-friendly products. By promoting more plant-based options, we can make the world a better place. Animal-based agriculture is extremely harmful for the environment, being a huge contributor to climate change. Studies show that animal-based food products create roughly twice as many emissions as plant-based alternatives. On top of that, animals locked in factory farms are subjected to horrific brutalities, before ever reaching the slaughterhouse. Body parts are snipped clean off without anesthesia, leading to excruciating pain and sometimes death. Families are ripped apart, calling out for each other ? never to be reunited. Animals in overcrowded facilities are surrounded by fecal matter piling up around them, as well as the dead, decomposing bodies of their own brethren. In order to both save the Earth and reduce suffering, we must make plant-based, eco-friendly, cruelty-free options more readily available. Message-ID: <7B51276A4A2048F9A8F7838B9ADFA7E0@lewpostnew> UN Global Climate Action 16 March 2022 High Level Climate Champions Newsletter The Power and Freedom of Net Zero A world reliant on international oil, gas and coal markets is a world where geopolitical crises, extreme weather and infrastructure disruptions reverberate around the global economy, leading to price and supply shocks. It?s a world that continues to fuel bigger risks ? from volatile prices, to the health impacts of pollution, to the migration driven by drought, flood, food shortages and war. Reliance on clean, flexible, distributed and unlimited renewable fuels can alleviate these risks, leading to greater energy independence, wider access to affordable energy sources, clean air and faster sustainable development. The current geopolitical crisis and instability of Russian oil and gas imports is alarming, and leading some to argue they should step up development of their own oil and gas resources, as a way to ensure energy security. However, this is not the best way to respond to the current crisis. Instead, this is a time double down on the global race to zero emissions and systemic resilience to the impacts of climate change. It?s the time to pivot away from a centralized energy system reliant on a few big suppliers of fossil fuels and power generators ? towards a fair, distributed and clean system. This is a system that?s designed for the local community ? taking advantage of local resources such as wind, sunshine and hydro, and incorporating efficiency measures such as home insulation. The European Union, for example, could reduce its imports on Russian gas by more than one-third within a year through measures that support the European Green Deal, energy security and energy affordability, according to the International Energy Agency. These include accelerating the deployment of solar and wind, maximizing the use of existing low-emission sources such as nuclear and renewables, and ramping up energy efficiency in homes and businesses. We won?t end our reliance on fossil fuels overnight, or even within a couple of years. This transition needs to occur in a just, planned and orderly way that benefits local communities and diversifies economies. But developing new oil and gas fields is not a quick or attractive fix. They would take years to develop, and even domestic supplies are linked to international prices. And, as the science makes clear, there is no room for new fossil fuels developments on the route to zero emissions before 2050. The Race to Zero Criteria The process is now underway to strengthen, clarify and update the criteria for members of the UN-back Race to Zero. This is an annual consultation, supported by an expert peer review group, designed to continually raise the standard for best practices around robust targets for net zero emissions. The Race to Zero set its Starting Line Criteria in 2021, requiring members to pledge, plan, proceed and publish targets for net zero emissions before 2050. But climate action and the impacts of climate change are rapidly evolving, with the growing body of climate science, exponential growth of zero-carbon solutions and lessons learned by frontrunners. The Race to Zero consultation is an independent process led by experts and practitioners from around the world - some connected to the campaign, some not. Through lively discussion, and likely disagreements, the expert peer review group will digest suggestions and draft new criteria around the requirements to pledge, plan, proceed and publish. These will be presented to UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, Nigel Topping and Mahmoud Mohieldin, for approval and published in June. They will take immediate effect for any new partner or member looking to join the Race to Zero, while existing partners and members will have a year to make updates to their work. Middle East and North Africa Regional Climate Week The High-Level Champions are excited to launch their programme for the first-ever Middle East and North Africa Regional Climate Week, taking place in Dubai from 28-31 March. The event provides a platform for governments, cities, private sector leaders, financial institutions and civil society to advance collaborative climate action in the region through deep dialogue and engagement. It also marks the first public appearance for the Egyptian High-Level Climate Champion for the COP27 Presidency, Mahmoud Mohieldin, alongside Nigel Topping, UK High-Level Climate Champion for the COP26 Presidency. The two will share their priorities for the year, kickstarting the five-year plan for the Improved Marrakech Partnership. The programme includes the Regionalization Workshop of the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action, on 29 March at 2-6pm local time, which will bring stakeholders together to assess climate change in the region, explore challenges and opportunities, and showcase ambitious solutions within the context of the Race to Resilience and Race to Zero campaigns. It also includes a Marrakech Partnership Implementation Lab on water and strengthening resilience on 28 March at 4:30-6:30pm local time. It will look at how recycled water can play a critical role in supporting climate resilience and water and food security in the MENA region. An information note has recently been published for all participants. Register now and join us in Dubai! Spotlight on Locally Led Adaptation The Resilience Hub at COP26 provided a new, global platform for people experiencing the impacts of climate change and working to build resilience and adaptation around the world. Their voices were amplified, and heard, like at no other COP. But - with climate change already disrupting and destroying the lives of billions - it?s not enough to be heard. Their experiences need to influence leadership decisions, including at COP negotiations. The Gobeshona Global Conference, from 27 March-1 April, will explore how the experiences and knowledge of those working on locally led adaptation and resilience can be elevated at COP27 in Egypt. Bringing together researchers from around the world, the conference aims to set out actionable research that can inform policies and climate action work. ?Gobeshona? means ?research? in Bangladeshi, and the conference is designed to share knowledge about locally led adaptation and resilience. This will be the second annual virtual international Gobeshona conference, which has been running in Bangladesh since 2014. The Climate Vulnerable Forum of 55 developing countries, currently chaired by Bangladesh, is already leading global action on adaptation and resilience, including through a joint multi-donor fund it created, writes Saleem Huq, an Ambassador for the Race to Zero and Race to Resilience. On March 14, within the framework of the "PRAISE MARNEULI?- Climate-Resilient Agriculture project, CENN hosted another Marneuli Multisectoral Stakeholder Working Group (MSWG) meeting at LEPL Vocational College "Modus" Marneuli with the support of HEKS-EPER. During the meeting, 10 members of the MSWG discussed new advocacy issues in the area of climate-resilient agriculture, and discussed the current state of the advocacy process. In addition, opportunities were identified for establishing agricultural cooperatives at the municipal level. The MSWG will mainly focus on dealing with climate-friendly, climate-resilient agriculture challenges, capacity assessment, elaboration of capacity development programs, land, and other natural resource-related problem advocacy. Moreover, the group will be engaged with mobilizing the public for the sub-grant competition, selecting grant projects, and engaging in the monitoring phase. The MSWG members are from private, public, and civic sectors interested in the development of the agricultural sector in Marneuli Municipality. The "PRAISE MARNEULI" project is implemented by CENN with the support of HEKS-EPER. The overall objective of the project is to support income generation opportunities of vulnerable populations in Marneuli Municipality through the development and promotion of environmentally friendly and climate-resilient agricultural (CRA) practices. The action aims to empower smallholders, entrepreneurs, women, youth, and other local actors by introducing climate-resilient agriculture best practices in correlation with the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA). Within the project, local farmers will have the opportunity to improve their skills, gain knowledge and share this knowledge with other farmers through field trips to regions of Georgia. Hi, Fossil fuels are not only causing the climate crisis: they?re funding Putin?s war on Ukraine. As long as we?re dependent on fossil fuels, we will always be at the mercy of the powerful who extract them. The path to freedom, peace and a safe, livable future is clean, renewable energy. It?s green, sustainable, affordable, and can protect ordinary people from price shocks and the worst impacts of the climate crisis. But, this rapid transition away from fossil fuels must be rooted in justice. That means holding those responsible for the climate crisis to account, and making them pay their fair share to fix the problem they created. Will you call on world leaders to make polluters pay for a transition to renewables? Add your name Fossil fuel companies have not only profited from Putin?s war in the past few weeks. [1] Polluters like Exxon Mobil, Chevron, BP, Total Energies and Shell announced record profits recently. [2] And their profits are expected to rise by as much as 50 percent next year. [3] But, few oil giants are keen on paying their taxes. In some cases, they are actually paying negative taxes. [4] Meanwhile, regular people are struggling to pay their power and heating bills, and are feeling the deadly effects of the climate crisis. We need to break free from fossil fuels and the dictators they prop up. We need clean, safe energy that will protect people from the instability and destruction fossil fuels bring. Will you tell governments to make polluters pay for the transition to clean, affordable, safe energy? Yes, I'll add my name Right now, there is growing political will for those with the most wealth to pay their fair share. Just last year, over 130 leaders signed their countries up to a global corporation tax to make sure billionaire companies couldn?t keep dodging taxes. [5] Charging fossil fuel companies? profits isn?t only the right thing to do. It?s entirely possible with enough of us working together, and our movement knows how to apply pressure. Today, I?m asking you to join me, and many more, in calling for polluters to finally be part of the solution. And that means hitting them where it hurts - their profits. But this time around, it?s different. The California Water Board hearings on the Arrowhead Springs are not going as BlueTriton expected. Their lawyers are being challenged on the facts, having their nonsense motions dismissed, and being held to task in a way they are clearly not used to! It?s a moment of accountability that our years-long campaign ? and your support ? has finally made possible, and we?re closer than ever to returning more water to the San Bernardino National Forest than was used to create artificial snow for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Will you help us down this homestretch? The Story of Stuff Project has been paying 100% of the legal bills for the San Bernardino campaign since 2015, totaling $300,000. In the last 3 months, we've spent over $100,000 in legal fees. For context, we haven?t spent this much on legal fees in the last 4 years combined. But that?s just how important this campaign is ? a milestone in our journey to reclaim precious water from corporate theft. With your help, we?re sending a clear message to bottling operations across the country: water belongs in rivers and mountain streams, not plastic bottles! Help us get across the finish line today. Help us get across the finish line Last week, the hearings reached a crossroads with a long awaited site visit to the source of the springs, nearly 6,000 feet up the San Bernardino Mountains. I?m pleased to bring the experience to you through this photo essay which captures what?s at stake for the surrounding ecosystem. Along the way, I recorded a message of gratitude from Steve Loe, retired Forest Service biologist, local activist and crucial witness in the hearings. He really brought home the incredible partnership we?ve forged over the last six years between national, state and local organizations and individuals to protect Strawberry Creek. When we eventually return all of the water BlueTriton removes to Strawberry Creek, it will be in no small part because of Steve?s contribution and the contribution of so many other local heroes the Story of Stuff team and Community have proudly been supporting together. A majestic and essential breeding ground for elephants is about to be sold off to international investors and destroyed, but a nearby Maasai community is trying to come to the rescue -- we can help them win! These indigenous leaders already run a wildly successful conservancy and if they can show they have the resources to acquire the land and remove the fencing that threatens migrating herds, the sellers say they have a deal. But investors are already calling with big offers, so they need to move fast -- that's where we come in! Just 200 dollars will allow the community to grow the conservancy by a whole acre of essential land! Together we can help create the longest wildlife corridor in East Africa. Are you in? The land could be swept into an international investor agreement any day, and then all hopes of preserving this wildlife corridor would be lost. And the more money we raise, the more land the Maasai can clear and maintain! Giving them the power to expand the survival of thousands of species! For decades, private landowners have put up fences throughout Maasai Mara, where wildlife need to be able to roam free in order to survive. Wildebeests, giraffes and other creatures then get trapped in the wire, dying slow, painful deaths. Nashulai Maasai Conservancy changed that by uniting 6,000 acres where humans and animals now live side-by-side, reviving ancient practices and allowing all to flourish. They?ve been recognized by the UN for restoring the threatened ecosystem, all while reducing poverty among their community by training and paying young people to patrol and protect the land. In just five years, the Nashulai Maasai Conservancy has turned once abandoned land into a thriving home to 5,000 wildebeests and zebras, 100 giraffes, and five families of elephants, including 10 babies born in recent months! And by creating jobs patrolling the area, they?ve found a groundbreaking way to protect their livelihoods and their land. If we can raise enough, the local community can move quickly to join the conservancy, tear down the fences, and develop local capacity to protect and regenerate this expanded wildlife corridor. And we can keep up our campaigning to protect wild places worldwide. Can you chip in to make it happen? War Is Bad for All Living Things. Ukrainian Shelter Animals, Pets, and Strays Are Suffering. Sign Now Putin's reckless attacks on Ukraine have been devastating, with the UN reporting that almost 1,500 civilians have been injured and over 900 killed as of March 20. On top of the impacts felt by humans, our animal companions have suffered greatly, too. Often the overlooked victims of war, strays, pets, and shelter animals throughout Ukraine are fighting to survive Putin's violent invasion. The brave Ukrainians who are keeping shelter doors open to take in strays and pets displaced by the conflict are an inspiration to all of us, caring for animals whose families have had to make the heartbreaking decision to leave them behind as they seek refuge in neighboring countries. But the conflict in Ukraine means that deliveries of food and vital medicines can't always make it to the animals in need. Meanwhile, deadly airstrikes are terrorizing shelter animals and strays alike -- there are reports that pets are dying from heart attacks and bullets. The reality is that these shelters shouldn't be forced to take care of so many pets under such brutal conditions in the first place. Every death from war is a preventable death -- including those suffered by animals. Sign the petition now to tell Putin: protect Ukrainians and their animals! End the invasion now! Air Pollution Patterns in the U.S. Are Racist, Disproportionately Poisoning Communities of Color Sign Now Air might go everywhere, dispersing eventually around the globe ? but air pollution tends to cluster. And in the U.S., air pollution is most dense in Black and brown neighborhoods, because of decades of racist housing policies. Federal policies called "redlining" intentionally segregated Black, Latinx, and immigrant communities into areas considered "less desirable." That ushered in generations of poverty... and also deadly environmental racism. Zoning officials used areas around these same neighborhoods as prime locations for major polluting industries, including coal plants and major highways. The legacy of those decisions lingers today. Recent research shows that these historical policies have pushed approximately 45 million Americans, primarily people of color, into more densely polluted areas than their predominantly whiter and wealthier counterparts. This has huge contemporary health implications, including causing increased rates of asthma, heart attacks, and strokes ? and also increased susceptibility to COVID-19. This is true for both adults and also small children. Air pollution isn't just unpleasant: it kills. Robert D. Bullard, a distinguished professor at Texas Southern University, summarizes it perfectly: this research provides additional "solid empirical evidence that systemic racism is killing and making people of color sick." Not just in the past, but also in the present. It's up to the U.S. government to begin to right this wrong that it created. Sign the petition to demand that the U.S. government begin an immediate and thorough project to clean up the pollution in segregated, formerly redlined neighborhoods! It's Still Legal to Eat Cats and Dogs in Switzerland. Sign the Petition to Ban This Practice, Now! Sign Now Slaughtering pet cats or dogs, and smoking their meat for dinner ? this is still legal in the country of Switzerland. So far, Swiss legislators have banned butchers and restaurants from selling meat harvested from the dead bodies of dogs and cats. But private residents may still harm the family pet if they choose to, and then eat its remains. There aren't even any regulations about what manner of slaughter is permitted. Yet some people say there's no need ban this practice by asserting that dog- or cat-meat eating is "very rare." But that's just not a sufficient excuse. Rare or not, it's simply abhorrent to think about people butchering and eating our beloved companion animals! Animals' rights must be respected, now. The majority of Swiss residents are opposed to eating dogs and cats. But since it's not illegal yet, that means some people can ? and DO ? feast on our furry family members. In fact, a Swiss newspaper recently published an article about the prevalence of cat and dog eating in the country, quoting from individuals who claim to eat these pets. One farmer actually described having a peer slaughter a dog for him, or clubbing a dog to death himself. Another insisted: "It's nothing exceptional [to eat pets] ? meat is meat." Whether it's ten people eating our treasured furry friends, or 100 ? it's simply too many. Friend, Today we are releasing the findings of an undercover investigation by Born Free USA, in collaboration with Humane Society International and the Humane Society of the United States. The investigation, which uncovered the horrors behind trapping and the National Trappers Association Convention, was grim and horrifying. Trapped raccoons were bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat, and one later found to be still alive was beaten to death by a trapper. A dead fox, who was likely killed by coyotes, as he was unable to defend himself or run, struggled so hard to free himself that his leg snapped clean through. A cat was also found dead in a trap, reminding us that these devices can also harm companion animals and protected wildlife species. During a course on trapping education, trainers laughed about illegal activities, and a representative from a state Department of Natural Resources even volunteered information on loopholes in trapping laws. Needless to say, this was truly a hellish investigation. We?re upset and angry and we?re sure you are too but don?t give up because there is work we can do to stop this. Please help pass the Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act, which would help fight this horrendous practice. The entire world is facing the greatest threat in history: a large-scale nuclear war, capable of destroying our civilization and causing vast ecological damage across the Earth. We call for an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of all Russian military forces from Ukraine, and for all possible efforts at dialogue to prevent this ultimate disaster. We call on Russia and NATO to explicitly renounce any use of nuclear weapons in this conflict, and we call on all countries to support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons to ensure that we never again face a similar moment of nuclear danger. The time to ban and eliminate nuclear weapons is now. It is the only way to guarantee that the inhabitants of the planet will be safe from this existential threat. It is either the end of nuclear weapons, or the end of us. We reject governance through imposition and threats, and we advocate for dialogue, coexistence and justice. Will you join the call too? sign the petition Is it enough to express ?profound sorrow? for an ?appalling atrocity? that you benefited from? Prince William may think it is, but many in Barbados, Jamaica and the Bahamas don?t. As William and Kate tour the Caribbean, they are greeted with calls for justice, and that amends be made for the legacy of slavery. Will you join? Campaigners in Kingston staged a protest demanding reparations when the Royal tour arrived in Jamaica. The Prime Minister of Barbados -- the world?s newest republic -- is writing again to European countries on behalf of the Caribbean Community in an attempt to finally resolve the issue. The Bahamas National Reparations Committee issued the same request ahead of the Duke and Duchess?s arrival there. If enough of us come together to support those demands, we can tip the scales in favour of making long-overdue amends for the crime against humanity of slavery. Join the global call for European nations to make amends for slavery and colonialism. The British Royal family hopes that William and Kate touring the Caribbean islands will head off moves by other nations there to follow Barbados?s lead in removing the Queen as the head of state. But imagine what a better world it would be if instead of clinging to the social orders of the past, a process of reconciliation was started. Atoning for the harm that colonialism and slavery did, means that the global community can come together on an equal footing to solve the problems facing humanity. The Duke and Duchesses tour coincides with the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This year, let?s do more than remember the victims and deliver justice to their descendants and communities. Call on European Governments to commit to reparations. The demand for reparations isn?t new, but has been called for by enslaved and freed people themselves since the 18th century. CARICOM, the community of Caribbean nations agreed a 10 point plan for reparatory justice eight years ago. Indeed, European nations know how to deliver reparations as they?ve done it before. The problem was the wrong people benefitted. Slave owners were compensated on abolition -- allowing them to invest in businesses, buildings and infrastructure, while formerly enslaved people got nothing and their communities were impoverished. What reparations will look like exactly will be different in different places, but to begin with there must be an apology for the crimes that have been committed, and a commitment to take responsibility for those crimes. After that it?s about supporting the provision of societal benefits that enslaving and colonising nations were able to provide for themselves from the wealth extracted from countries like those in the Caribbean. It could start with cancelling monetary debt rather than continuing to extract wealth, so that money can instead be put to public healthcare and education. I want to help create a more just and equitable future by making amends for the past. Commit to reparations now! Nobody holds descendants of slave traders, slave owners and colonialists responsible for their ancestor?s actions. But the fact remains that the foundation of wealth, corporate power and inequality today is built on this legacy, and it?s high time to make amends for that. Message-ID: Activists just revealed French oil giant Total?s human rights abuses to the UN Hi, Total?s East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) has already forced 100,000 people off their land. And anyone who opposes this pipeline is at risk - activists we?re working with have been attacked, threatened, and arrested. [1] Together, we are fighting back to stop this project from ever seeing the light of day - but we need your help. Over the last two weeks, 350 has joined StopEACOP activists from Uganda traveling across Europe getting broad support to stop Total?s pipeline. And on Tuesday, activists gave evidence to the UN on the human rights abuses Total is and will be responsible for. We need to make sure that big banks trying to secretly profit from EACOP can?t hide from the devastation they are already causing. And we have some intel. European Bank, Deutsche Bank, who are rumored to be major backers of EACOP, could pull out if we ramp up the pressure. Will you share this report on the devastation EACOP will cause to Deutsche Bank?s social media? Add pressure on social media Our strategy of calling out and embarrassing these funders is working. Already 15 major banks have committed to stop funding [2] and earlier this week a major French insurance company removed their support in a huge blow to the project.[3] Now is the time to pile on the pressure on those companies who are still trying to secretly profit off destruction. They are becoming more and more isolated and every month more pull out. Take action So many lives are already being affected by this project and even more are at risk if this project goes ahead. 40 million people might not be able to get clean water if there?s an oil spill. And 34 million tons of carbon will be pumped into the atmosphere every year causing devastating global heating. [4] Companies like Total don?t care about people, they only care about profit. And the only way to stop them is to cut their funding. So, please, let?s keep up the pressure on Deutsche Bank and other banks and keep fossil fuels in the ground for good. In solidarity and defiance, Ellie for 350.org P.S. Show solidarity with the activists touring Europe by retweeting and sharing their posts on Facebook on 350's social media. If you don't have a social media account, you can set one up easily or use the info on our share page and write to the bank yourself. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources [1] Total's EACOP Pipeline one step closer to going ahead | 350.org [2] Who will finance the East African Crude Oil Pipeline | Bank Track [3] Global insurance firms steer clear of EACOP|StopEACOP [4] Total's EACOP Pipeline one step closer to going ahead | 350.org PO Box 843004, Boston, MA 02284-3004 350.org is a global movement that fights for a just and equitable world by stopping the fossil fuel industry from continuing to destroy our climate. Since taking this course, I believe abolishing war is not only realistic and doable, it is imperative that we do so. I appreciate David Swanson and all the instructors for sharing their wisdom and vision for a world beyond war.? -- B. Keith Brumley ?This course gave me hope that the stupidity of war is being addressed in all aspects of how unacceptable and outdated it is. It inspired me to want to include more impact of war preparations in environmental groups, and scared me with the realization that we need to turn around the war economy ASAP or we will get where we are headed.? -- Tisha Douthwaite ?Taking War Abolition 101 was a powerful learning experience for me (my first online course). My husband benefited as well, and I found that simply telling people about the course led to many interesting discussions about war and the need to work toward ending it. The format was accessible, the materials excellent ? well-researched, well-documented ? and the online discussion forums taught me a lot. Sign now to demand Congress pass comprehensive legislation that makes it illegal to arm robot dogs! Machines do not see us as people, making arming them even more dangerous than giving a gun to a human. We know that unchecked technological development has the potential to replicate our worst human social trends, with coders sounding the alarm on how facial recognition software is racist and A.I. able to learn dangerous conspiracy theories. On top of that, war is already a dehumanizing act ? putting robots in charge without a human conscience has the potential to make killing even easier. Luckily, other well-known robotics corporations -- including Boston Dynamics -- have strict policies against the weaponization of the machines they produce. But we can't rely on the benevolence of massively profitable companies, hoping that they will happen to do the right thing. The government must act before this equipment is developed en masse. We cannot allow this rapidly growing robotics industry to continue production with so little regulation. The proposed pipeline will cut through Wet'suwet'en land without approval from hereditary chiefs, and just like all other pipelines, is nearly guaranteed to leak eventually. The answer to your silent question is yes, there is another report and this one will focus on climate ?Solutions and Mitigation?. Before we get to April, we highlight the exciting actions of mobilisations for the Global Climate Strikes by activists from all over with momentum to create a climate movement. In solidarity, Christine P.S. Before you go, can you take two minutes to give us feedback on our newsletter? By giving us feedback, we will look at improving all the actions and movements we bring and factor in how we bring them. In Case You Missed It Global Climate Strikes ? #PeopleNotProfit The youth are back and these climate strikes like others before were led by Fridays For Future youth across various parts of the world with one theme bringing them together ? People Not Profit. This wave of strikes demands leaders across borders to put people's livelihoods before the profits they make in destroying the climate. Because change needs to happen, and it needs to happen now if we are to build a system that will protect all communities at every corner. Moshi-Moshi action in Japan calls for safer climate ?Moshi-Moshi? ? a Japanese greeting to begin a telephone conversation, has boldly led Japanese citizens under the campaign to literally call the 3 megabanks? customer services. Their initiatives were encouraged with positive feedback that their messages were received and promised to be conveyed to the right departments. This fun campaign was led by 350 Japan, and had about 124 volunteers all banding together to call the 3 Japanese Megabanks ? Mitsubishi UFJ, Mizuho, and SMBC ? and deliver the Stop Fossil Finance campaign demand. An inspiring win for the movement, reminding us that we all have a voice, and this is the sound of the future and how we demand climate justice. Read all about it, the IPCC report: #FossilFuelsDidThis The end of February saw the release of the IPCC report on climate ?Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability?. However, it came at a time when the war in Ukraine started. Still, the report itself offered a way forward for the climate movement, and that cannot be ignored. Honestly the report showed us what we already know: the level of global heating is high, and we know who is responsible for this. It's the fossil fuel industry. The banks that continue to finance this industry. After the launch of the report, we hosted webinars to create platforms to discuss the outcomes and what it means for the climate justice movement. We know that our voices and collective engagement is the power the climate needs to fuel a just transition.
