                  This year’s Earth Overshoot Day is here (July 28) and we are thrilled! Not because we’ve used all of the biological resources that Earth can regenerate this year. But because, for the first time, a country’s Ministry of Environment is hosting a special event to launch Earth Overshoot Day. The event features Ecuador’s Minister of Environment, Gustavo Manrique, Ecuador's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Juan Carlos Holguin, and Global Footprint Network founder Mathis Wackernagel.



                  Why launch Earth Overshoot Day in Ecuador? Ecuador has a tradition of ecological leadership. It was the first country to give nature constitutional rights, and was one of the first countries to add “avoid entering an ecological deficit” to its national priority list. It’s clear Ecuador recognizes that resource security is turning into an essential parameter for the country’s lasting prosperity.



                  So, what can be done? Turning overshoot trends around is not only possible; it’s economically beneficial for those who lead the charge. And it’s also good for the planet. There is immense power of possibility in the countless existing solutions that #MoveTheDate.
