                        Last year, astounding heat broke records on every continent. Wildfires tore through Canada in June. In December, tornadoes ripped through parts of the U.S. in one of the nation's worst storms in recorded history. And Australia is forecast to experience even more record-setting heatwaves and floods in the coming months. Yet while rapidly worsening climate change causes extreme weather to become the new normal, the Australian Parliament plans to allow corporations to explore for more oil and gas. And they plan on doing so in a special marine ecosystem called Rowley Shoals. This area is home to at least 96 precious different species, nearly one in five of which are listed as either threatened or endangered.



                        In May 2021, the International Energy Agency told world governments that in order to limit global warming to 1.5C — constituting an already massively disruptive increase in global average temperatures — exploration for new fossil fuel basins needed to stop by the year's end. If we want to meet the goals reached by the Paris Agreement, which Australia committed to, wealthy nations must stand up to the oil and gas industries. Australia's simultaneous plans to expand renewable energy as well are wonderful, but will be rendered effectively meaningless if the country does not take action to stop fossil fuel exploration and extraction.
