Hi, We'd like to take a moment to step back and take stock of what we accomplished this year. 2021 was a turning point for the climate movement. The pillars of the fossil fuel industry are weakening ? and that?s because of all of our work. This was such a busy year in every corner of the world that we had a hard time narrowing down a list of accomplishments. But because everyone loves a good list, here are five amazing things we did together in 2021 (in no particular order). After you finish reading, will you share your climate priorities with us for the year ahead? We read every single one of them. Share your thoughts ? The European Central Bank agrees to prioritise climate risks Koala Kollektiv projection at European Central Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. After 18 months of protests, Europe?s central bank announced that it would incorporate climate as it assesses risk and formulates monetary policy.1 This was a huge victory that will help cut off the flow of funds to fossil fuels. With this momentum, we are continuing to push the Bank of England to follow suit. Brazil?s national development bank leaves coal behind 350.org Brazil and artisanal fishermen from AHOMAR denounce the BNDES? high investments in fossil fuels. One of the largest financiers of infrastructure projects in Brazil ? National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) ? announced that it would no longer provide credit for coal-fired power plants, following pressure from our movement.2 China ends financing for new coal projects abroad Climate advocates from 350 Pilipinas held a dragon and lion dance at the Chinese Embassy in Makati, Metro Manila. China announced at the United Nations that it would end all involvement in coal projects abroad. We worked with a global network of organisations to pressure the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) ? the largest bank in the world ? to stop all funding for new coal projects.3 We launched a historic Global Just Recovery Gathering 7,000 people from 151 countries gathered to envision a Just Recovery. We hosted a 62-hour event called the Global Just Recovery Gathering. The event had 196 sessions, 30 panelist speakers, live interpretation and captioning in nine languages. We used cutting-edge, digital technology to support authentic connection for our movement. The event inspired individuals to take action, grow their leadership, and provided a space to envision the future we want. End Wildlife Trafficking, Pass the Whistleblower Bill Now! Sign Now Wildlife trafficking is one of the biggest threats to wildlife worldwide. Black markets, poaching and more threaten the incredible beasts we share our earth with. And while the practice is illegal in many cases, there are substantial loopholes that can make it difficult to catch people involved in trafficking and stop it. Given that the U.S. is a major buyer and contributor to this awful industry, it's so exciting that legislators there have introduced a bill that could actually curb it. It's called the Wildlife Trafficking and Anti-Trafficking Act of 2021 and it needs all of our support! What's unique about this bill is the way it incentivizes and protects whistleblowers. The bill would set up substantial financial rewards for people who call in legitimate tips about wildlife trafficking. This would allow NGOs and regular people alike to report signs of wildlife trafficking. If we want to halt the 6th mass extinction we are in, curbing wildlife trafficking will be a big part of that. While Climate Scientists Warn Of Looming 'Point Of No Return,' Australia Plans Seismic Searches For Oil And Gas Sign Now Last year, astounding heat broke records on every continent. Wildfires tore through Canada in June. In December, tornadoes ripped through parts of the U.S. in one of the nation's worst storms in recorded history. And Australia is forecast to experience even more record-setting heatwaves and floods in the coming months. Yet while rapidly worsening climate change causes extreme weather to become the new normal, the Australian Parliament plans to allow corporations to explore for more oil and gas. And they plan on doing so in a special marine ecosystem called Rowley Shoals. This area is home to at least 96 precious different species, nearly one in five of which are listed as either threatened or endangered. In May 2021, the International Energy Agency told world governments that in order to limit global warming to 1.5C ? constituting an already massively disruptive increase in global average temperatures ? exploration for new fossil fuel basins needed to stop by the year's end. If we want to meet the goals reached by the Paris Agreement, which Australia committed to, wealthy nations must stand up to the oil and gas industries. Australia's simultaneous plans to expand renewable energy as well are wonderful, but will be rendered effectively meaningless if the country does not take action to stop fossil fuel exploration and extraction. Sign now to demand the Australian Parliament protect this precious ecosystem and our planet by denying permit applications for oil and gas exploration near Rowley Shoals! A strange climate phenomenon has taken place in Colorado, causing a large-scale fire that has burned more than 1,000 homes under Rocky Mountains,(https://www.denverpost.com/2021/12/31/marshall-fire-boulder-county-friday/?). A strong wind, which upset not only cars and carried the roofs of houses, but also electric pillars, which in an extremely dry environment ignited dry grass and caused fires, which got very fast in strong winds. I will write late about the details. Such a phenomenon arose in November 2004 in the High Tatras National Park in Slovakia. In the New Water Paradigm (www.waterparadigm.org) we described it on pages 51 and 52 as follows: The transformatio n of land into desert Long-term drought initiates a spiral of desertification, namely the transformation of land into semidesert or desert. Within the context of this publication, deserts and semideserts can be understood as fully dried-out parts of a continent with minimal or no circulation whatsoever of water in the small water cycle. Even conventional natural landscape with vegetation and sufficient water can turn into semidesert or desert through the destruction, by human activity, of the small water cycle over the territory (this can, for example, come about through the burden of too much urban development, too much intensive farming or the excessive raising of cattle and consequent overgrazing). This fate possibly afflicted even the coastal regions of hundreds of towns in northern Africa, which was once the granary of the Roman Empire. This gradual process of transforming once natural landscape with vegetation and sufficient water resources into completely arid land can also be called the conversion of a land into semidesert or, in extreme cases, desert. Consequences of extreme manifestations of weather The consequences of extreme manifestations of weather are frequent forest fires, floods, degradation and erosion of soil, landslides and various ecological and other catastrophes (Fig. 24 and 25), threatening the life and health of people and causing vast economic damage. With the recurrence of these manifestations of weather comes a gradual and permanent lowering of the competitiveness of the land, which is evident in practical terms by, for example, the fact that insurance companies refuse to insure property in such affected localities and the banking sector limits loans and guarantees for projects on these territories. Floods, drought, tornadoes and other extreme weather events are a syndrome of land which has been exploited and inhabited by human beings with today?s approach to surface water and rainwater. I have just one remark at the moment: The Colorado fire was not caused by global climate change, but by local and regional drying up under the Rocky Mountains. In the 21st century, man mysteriously does not understand the trivial connection that by draining the landscape, it turns a juicy green landscape into a dry, dusty landscape that brings extremes and atmosphere. Tell French President Macron to oppose the European relicensing of glyphosate. ??Dangerous for the environment and public health, it is more than urgent to do away with glyphosate in France and in Europe and to start a real agricultural and food transition. It is known since 2015 that this substance is classified as "probably carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the World Health Organization. Recently, France?s own National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) strengthened the analysis of risks associated with glyphosate. Emmanuel Macron had pledged to phase out glyphosate in France "no later than" early 2021. He did not keep this promise, but France, which will take over the rotating presidency of the EU in January 2022, can and must play a leading and unambiguous role to ban glyphosate in Europe. Hi, Every single one of us wants to play their part in protecting our planet. But this year, our leaders did not play their part, they chose to take the same path that brought us here. They built the EU?s new farming deal (CAP), on old logic - stripping our environment to line the pockets of agriculture giants. [1] Now we?re left with a deal that threatens the future of our bees, our health and the livelihood of thousands of families. Many family farmers are giving up. But there is hope. Across Europe, a farming revolution is taking life. And it's spreading quickly. From Italy to Bulgaria and everywhere in between, people are rethinking farming to provide food in ways that respect our land and help the climate. [2] But these ideas need the backing of a community like ours. [3] There are over a million of us, and when we each play our part it adds up to the kind of common action we know the climate needs. In 2022 we can build a movement, spread knowledge and pressure politicians that have to implement the EU plan in each country now. They can still make changes that would benefit our climate, farmers and bees despite the bad deal our EU leaders gave us. To make this a reality we need to know if we have the financial stability to keep working on it. Can you help chip in just ?5 to make this ambitious plan a reality? We don?t have the deep pockets of agricultural giants but we do have a community of brilliant, committed people around Europe to help. Donate ?3 Donate ?5 Donate ?10 Donate another amount So what does this way of making food look like? Simply put, this is about going back to the way we used to farm before: in harmony with nature. It?s called ?regenerative? farming. It?s about planting diverse crops, taking great care of our soil and water and planting more trees where we farm. This is better for the food we plant. It has huge potential to stop climate change. It will bring back insects. The list of benefits is long. [4] The incredible thing is that it?s already being used worldwide, from Sri Lanka, to Zambia, to parts of Europe and the US. It?s being used despite governments giving little money to incentivise this farming. That is what gives us hope. Despite decisions, laws, and money flowing in the wrong way, people worldwide are starting farming in harmony with the planet. So here?s what we could do next year: a.. Spread the word about the advantages of this farming revolution to hundreds of thousands of Europeans. b.. Supporting the efforts happening in different countries and start to put pressure on governments from Berlin to Madrid to implement regenerative farming c.. Build a coalition: We want to bring together farmers, activists, scientists and build a strong European coalition to push this new vision of farming and counter the powerful agri lobby. d.. Work with famous local chefs and food influencers, to spread awareness about regenerative farming and the drive the uptake of people using food from regenerative agriculture instead of from the climate crippling CAP e.. Change farming practices, one farm at a time But it will need the backing of a strong community like ours if we want to counter the powerful agriculture giants who are set on business as usual to protect their billions in profits. Will you sign to tell the European Commission to hold firm, and make a strong EU law? Sign the petition There?s almost nothing to stop corporations threatening legal action to silence their critics. It?s just another business expense -- they don?t even need to win in court, and they still win. Journalists, campaigners and whistleblowers distracted, demoralised, destroyed? Job done. But the European Commission is about to propose the first EU law against such abusive lawsuits. This could be a game changer for us -- but only if it?s truly water tight. Just over 100,000 people have already signed a joint petition to the Vice-President of the European Commission and the EU?s Justice Commissioner. The EU wants to hear from people like YOU -- and if you sign and share today, we'll deliver your message directly to them in Brussels next week: Tell the EU to stop abusive lawsuits against watchdogs like journalists, NGOs and activists. EU rules to stop strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) are within reach, but there?s no guarantee they?ll be good enough. Harassing critics with legal threats is big business. Corporations and their lawyers will only need a loophole or two, and the whole exercise will have been for nothing. But a strong EU anti-SLAPP law could provide a uniform level of protection against SLAPPs across the EU, and serve as a model for other countries. Tell the European Commission to propose a strong EU law against SLAPPs. SumOfUs members around the world have rallied to support other NGOs and activists facing abusive lawsuits from corporations and governments. PayPal in Germany once even tried to get us arrested for exposing their links to Neonazis. We need to keep resisting corporate harassment whenever it comes, but this EU law is a chance we mustn?t miss. Americans Are Dying in Car Accidents At Astronomical Rates, And There Is A Massive Gender Disparity. Sign Now A whopping 38,000 Americans die in car accidents each year -- the U.S. has more road accidents than any other nation in the world. Yet, like so many other dangers in this country, women, trans and non-binary folks are at a disproportionately high risk. Research shows that people who are not cis men are more than 17% more likely to be killed in traffic accidents, and have 73% greater odds of being seriously injured. This disparity is not only wildly unjust, it is easily preventable. As studies have shown since the 1970s, different body types perform differently in crash tests. Despite this, crash tests still use the "50th percentile male," which means a 171-pound, 5'9" dummy. In many parts of the country, Americans have no choice but to drive to get to work and school. If Americans have no choice but to drive, why should driving be so dangerous? And why should so many Americans be at heightened risk simply because their body is not a "50th percentile male" from 50 years ago? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTA) could easily change this by requiring crash test dummies to represent all bodies, not just the very small percentage currently used in crash tests. Sign now to demand that the NHTSA make crash dummies that represent all types of bodies, not just male ones! Thank you, Lauren Care2 Petitions Team P.S. SIGN NOW Hi, No one wants to buy products that destroy old-growth forests on the other side of the planet, but it's very hard not to. Many of our everyday products like cosmetics, snacks, and meat are made by ravaging the most beautiful forests on the planet, and clearing space for palm oil, cocoa, or cattle. This could all change soon. In a few days, the European Union will start negotiating a new law to ban products made in deforested areas. If this law passes, it could force the biggest food companies to completely change the way they make their products - because Europe is such a big market it actually has the power to change how these companies operate. That's why many employers, government agencies, restaurants, and businesses are requiring staff or patrons to provide proof of full immunization against COVID-19. Yet some people in the United States are determined to endanger the people around them by falsifying their health records in order to gain access to safer, vaccination-only spaces. Using or producing fake COVID-19 vaccine cards is not just extremely immoral and unethical. It's also straight-up illegal, in violation of federal fraud laws as well as many states' laws. Sign Now A crucial new law in Illinois makes it illegal for convicted abusers to own an animal. Perhaps most importantly, though, it also makes it illegal for abusers to even live with an animal at all, even if the pet is not legally in their possession. This amazing piece of legislation makes it much more difficult for perpetrators to simply transfer pet ownership on paper and then continue their violent animal abuse. Research shows that animal abusers tend to be repeat offenders, so removing their ability to come into close contact with helpless creatures is a vital step towards reducing future cruelty. Such a law deserves to be replicated because it could save countless animal lives elsewhere! The Humane Society estimates that more than 1 million animals are abused every year in the United States, but recognizes this might even be an undercount. Additionally, various types of animal abuse are normalized in the U.S., meaning many abusers get away with their crimes ? so we desperately need new policies that can reduce perpetrators' proximity to animals in the home. The state of Minnesota has taken some steps to meaningfully protect animals from abuse, but its laws are nowhere near strong enough. An intelligent and inquisitive person could hardly be blamed for reading this stuff and imagining that militaries can be made green, that climate change creates a need for more wars, and that living without militarism is simply unthinkable. Yet a basic understanding of the facts shows each of these ideas to be as sensible as the 1984 decrees that "freedom is slavery" and "ignorance is strength." We'd like more people to know and be able to communicate the basic facts about war the the environment. So, we've created a 6-week online course that anyone can do at their own pace, with the registration fee on a sliding scale. World BEYOND War has gathered the information, weeded out the false or the dubious, organized the key points, and condensed them into a coherent online course for busy, active people. We've also recruited super-talented facilitators to assist our staff in presenting the course and working with participants. War and the Environment will happen between January 17 and February 27, with the material divided into six weekly topics. This course is 100% online and interactions are not live or scheduled, so you can take part whenever works for you. Weekly content includes a mix of text, images, video, and audio. Instructors and students utilize online discussion forums to go over each week's content, as well as to provide feedback on optional assignment submissions. The course also includes three 1-hour optional zoom calls which are designed to facilitate a more interactive and real-time learning experience. Two-thirds of the spots have been filled. Learn more and register here. Or you can really support World BEYOND War in a big way and register for four upcoming online courses in 2022 at a discount on this page. -------------------------------------------------------- World BEYOND War is a global network of volunteers, chapters, and affiliated organizations advocating for the abolition of the institution of war. Tell Facebook to shut down illegal wildlife sales The global ecological crisis is threatening Earth's wildlife more than ever. But now platforms like Facebook are accelerating the crisis by creating a safe haven for poachers and traffickers. The animals are often terrorised, malnourished, and most do not survive the harrowing ordeal. Wildlife trafficking is one of the most lucrative criminal industries, worth up to $23 billion a year. Now social media is giving them unprecedented opportunities to develop an online marketplace with the opportunity to reach countless new customers. We have to shut down this bloody trade! And this week we can buy a huge piece of their forest home to help protect it...forever. The Leuser ecosystem in Indonesia has been called one of the most irreplaceable ecosystems on the planet. But poaching, infrastructure projects like hydroelectric dams, and mass deforestation fuelled by palm oil plantations are threatening to destroy it. That?s why our partner Rainforest Trust wants to purchase and protect a huge chunk of this forest...and give these critically endangered species a fighting chance to survive. Just months ago we were able to do this in Colombia, and protect a rare monkey species...let?s do it again! If 5000 of us chip in the cost of a cup of coffee in the next 24 hours, Rainforest Trust has a donor offering a 4x match on your donation! They could secure the land quickly and get started on their work protecting the forest. Can you help save this irreplaceable piece of our planet? If you?ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately. Donate $3 now Donate another amount Our community has done so much work over the years to protect orangutans from palm oil pillaging, and this could be a huge new step -- actually helping to buy the land and pay for patrols to stop deforestation and poaching. That happens through Rainforest Trust?s local partner, Forum Konservasi Leuser (FKL). After securing the land, FKL educates local communities in sustainable resource use, and recruits community members for jobs to protect the forest. These groups have been working together for 6 years and this land purchase would double their total protected area. And, this area critically needs protection. It isn?t just wildlife. The Leuser Ecosystem has a crucial role in fighting climate change, storing massive amounts of carbon (the area we could buy stores almost 350,000 metric tons!). When these areas are hacked and set on fire instead of protected, thousands of years of stored carbon are released. In bad fire years, it?s been estimated as comparable to the fossil fuel emissions of all of Western Europe! This is an incredibly rare opportunity. To work with others around the world to buy a piece of critically endangered ecosystem and know you?ve helped protect it. Will you be one of the 5000 donors we need to buy this land in the next 24 hours? Every extra penny we raise will be used to defend wild places like this from corporations bent on their destruction. Each year, estimates suggest that hundreds of millions of animals are killed by gas-guzzling vehicles on roadways. In Australia, the sweetly-named 'tunnel of love' runs through the Victorian Alps to protect a colony of critically endangered mountain pygmy possums from vehicle collisions. In India, a court-mandated victory won by environmental activists guaranteed nine crossings in the Pench tiger reserve, used by not just tigers, but wild dogs, sloth bears, civets and leopards as well. To get noticed we needed something to stand out. And small donations across this community poured in to make this happen. With this support, activists and artists from WeMove and partners dressed as Jacques Cousteau, spent hours building a giant colourful pop-up, and made a smaller pop-up to deliver to the Ocean Commissioner Sinkevi?ius himself. WeMove Europe campaigner Anya and other activists delivering the pop up book based on the film Life Aquatic to Oceans Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevi?ius (Credit: Oliver Hoslet) The pop-up tells the story of how you and more than 150,000 people want a healthy future for our ocean. [1] A future that can?t exist if we don?t ban the most destructive fishing practice known as bottom-trawling, where massive nets scrape the ocean floor destroying everything and killing marine animals. Together we also grabbed headlines in many languages and across the whole of Europe! From Le Monde, the European Commission media review, to the Irish Examiner, and Handelsblatt. By each chipping in a little, thousands of us ensured we had the resources to move fast and buy the ad space needed. Politico is plastered throughout the offices of EU decision makers, so politicians including Sinkevi?ius could see it as they shuffled to meetings or took a coffee break. Our Brussels campaigner Anya with the inside cover of Politico magazine showing that 150,000+ Europeans are making waves to #BanBottomTrawling As a community we continued to pile up the pressure. I?m now more hopeful than ever that the EU will turn the tide on destructive fishing and have healthy, thriving and resilient seas. But we?re not going to stop anytime soon. Let's Honor Her Legacy. Sign Now Seventeen days before her 100th birthday, beloved actress and famed animal lover Betty White passed away. She spread delight and kindness with her gentle, joyous way, having a particular soft spot for the pets and wildlife of the world who needed help. As Ms. White told Smithsonian Magazine ten years ago, "There isn't an animal on the planet that I don't find fascinating and want to learn more about." Now, in honor of her January 17th birthday, people are coming together to continue her legacy. For more than 60 years, she worked with the American Humane Association to help ensure "No Animals Were Harmed" in the making of TV shows and movies, tenderly advocating for animals who co-starred with her on sets. She was also a passionate champion for the "underdog" of endangered wildlife ? wolves. Persecuted and demonized for generations, some species of wolves are on the verge of extinction. But Ms. White's advocacy helped inspire efforts to conserve wolves in North America. Betty White showed us how offering unconditional love to pets and endangered species brings ample rewards to everyone. The Australian Government Must Acknowledge the Dangers that Climate Change Poses for Wildlife! Sign Now It is impossible to talk about threats to wildlife without mentioning climate change. From intensifying wildfires and habitat destruction, to worsening drought and starvation, to disrupting mating and migration patterns, climate change is a severe threat to the survival of many endangered species. Yet more than half of Australia's government documents outlining hazards to endangered species and habitats, as well as their plans for mitigation, don't mention climate change once. How in the world does Australia's government hope to preserve these incredible species if it won't even acknowledge this major menace? The science is settled ? climate change is real, humans are causing it, and we must act fast. But Australia's plans for endangered species management is apparently decades behind current scientific consensus. This is fairly ironic, considering that the first mammal reported extinct as a direct result of climate change was the Bramble Cay melomys of Australia. Now, the IUCN estimates that more than 10,000 species are at risk due to increased greenhouse gas emissions and rising global temperatures. This is a climate lie few people know about: millions of trees are burned to generate 'green' energy. European decision makers are debating if this terrible policy should continue. This is our chance to stop this. Send a message today. CONTACT MEPs NOW! Hi, The big debate is beginning. EU energy ministers and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will start discussing if burning trees at mass scale should be removed from the list of 'clean and renewable energies'. [1] This is a huge opportunity. If they do remove them from the list, we can save forests. All because it would stop billions of euros of our tax money flowing into this dirty energy - so-called 'biomass'. Our money is like oxygen to the industry - without it, the polluters won?t survive. [2] Experts are clear: When trees are cut down from forests and turned into containers full of wood pellets to be burned, it accelerates the climate crisis, pollutes the air we breathe, and destroys the homes of thousands of animals. [3] But EU leaders won?t stop this industry, if they don?t hear from us, Vladimir. For many of them this is just one of hundreds of topics they deal with, and industry is already whispering reasons to maintain the status quo in their ears. Let's tell them that we need to protect our forests! If each of us contacts our representatives directly, we can pressure decision makers to stop this and save our trees. Tweet at MEPs now! Share the post on Facebook! Email MEPs now! We have fought against coal and are on the right track. Coal is being stopped all over Europe. [6] But the polluting industry wants to keep their business going and the money flowing in. How? They want to turn the power plants where they burn coal into places where they burn trees to make energy. Plans to replace coal with this dangerous way to produce energy have already been made, from Finland, Netherlands, Denmark to Germany, Spain and Italy. [4] Wood pellet plant in US (left) (Source: Dogwoodalliance.org) Trees are cut, the wood is pressed into wood pellets and often shipped to Europe to be burnt. We are already losing our forests at an alarming rate. And these plans mean we could lose even more. Even worse ? according to top scientists, burning trees would catapult us towards climate destruction even faster. [5] But together we could stop the EU from funding this dangerous industry once and for all. When leaders meet they just have to stop labelling the mass burning of trees as 'green energy?. It won?t be easy to stop this. But a public outcry could change the rules. Tweet at MEPs now! Share the post on Facebook! Email MEPs now! Thank you, David (London), Annemarie (Berlin) and the entire WeMove Europe team P.S. Scientists from all over the world are on our side. Over 500 renowned scientists have warned that we need to protect our natural forests now - not burn them. [7] Help us stop the burning of our forests. The influential industry committee will vote in approximately June this year. Our heads of state and energy ministers also work on the policy. One important meeting is happening on the 21/22 January. [2] In many countries, there is a push by industry to transform coal plants into plants that will burn trees. This is a terrible idea. Billions of bees are dying -- and the EU just reapproved a bee-killing pesticide for another 7 years...even though it pledged to phase it out! Over 20% of bee species threatened with extinction are native to Europe -- and it's frightening to imagine the devastation another 7 years of this pesticide would cause. But thanks to a new law, people like you and me and NGOs can now challenge pesticide approvals in the EU?s supreme court. If we win, we could force the EU to ban this pesticide for good. Our partners at PAN Europe are ready to go to court -- but they need money to fund the case. If we all chip in just a small amount, we can power their case and keep campaigning to save the bees, before it?s too late. Vladimir, can you chip in to save the bees? They?re not only toxic to bees, but they can disrupt human hormones too, creating significant health risks. And by getting into the food we eat, the water we drink, and even the air we breathe, they can also impact unborn fetuses! The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) couldn?t have been clearer about the danger of Cypermethrin. They went so far as to say that NO mitigation measures could make it safe to bees. But instead of taking that advice, EU Member States listened to the mighty pesticide lobby and voted to reapprove this poison. Our case is simple. The EFSA made a clear recommendation that the EU Commission wanted to follow, but Member States -- and the pesticide lobby! -- forced the hand of the Commission to do something illegal. And now thanks to a new law, we can file a suit with the EU's highest courts and do something about it. PAN Europe knows how to win cases like this, and have time and time again. But they need cash to file the lawsuit and cover legal fees for the long battle ahead. Can we count on you to chip in to help save the bees? Message-ID: <324B3568819B4A9C8E0C027701C368D0@lewpostnew> UN Global Climate Action 20 January 2022 High Level Climate Champions Newsletter Climate Action Must Build Climate Resilience If there is one lesson we can take from 2021, it?s climate action is going to have to grow much faster to keep up with the climate change impacts we?re already seeing. Our two weeks at COP26 last year showed us the growing speed and determination with which businesses, investors, cities and regions are committing to halve emissions within this decade and reach net zero before 2050. At the same time, we need to adapt and build resilience to the unfolding impacts of climate change. 2021 saw catastrophic wildfires in California and Greece; floods in India, Australia, Turkey, China, Belgium, Germany and South Sudan; locust plagues in East Africa; deadly cold in Texas and melting of the permafrost that supports infrastructure and homes in Russia. There is no time to lose. If global warming reaches 1.5?C by 2030, nearly half the world?s population will be at risk from hazards related to heat stress, drought, flood or water stress, according to analysis for the UN-backed Race to Resilience produced by McKinsey Sustainability. That?s up from 43% today. Even if we stave off 1.5?C of warming until 2050, nearly one in four people will be at risk from severe hazards that could affect their lives and livelihoods, it found in research released at COP26. As now, lower income countries are more likely to be exposed to hazards than higher income countries. That would lead to more poverty and inequality caused by more loss and damage from the impacts of climate change. Resilient People Drive a Resilient Economy Building a resilient stable economy starts with building resilience, health and stability for people, communities and nature around the world. The Race to Resilience mobilizes businesses, investors, cities, regions and civil society to build resilience for the 4 billion people most at risk from climate change within the 2020s, to ensure that they can thrive in spite of climate shocks and stresses. This is crucial, because emission reductions alone will not protect our economic health and security in the long-run. By 2050, global GDP would shrink by 18% if the temperature rise reaches 3.2?, by 11% if it?s kept to 2?C and 4% if it?s lower than 2?C, Swiss Re Institute found last April. Asian economies will feel the worst impacts, with China at risk of losing nearly 24% of its GDP. Impacts will make it harder for people to work, according to McKinsey. Chronic severe heat stress, for example, would make it too hot to work outside during at least a quarter of working hours in a year - lowering incomes and forcing industries to rethink their operations. It could also raise health risks for workers, cause electricity and air conditioning cuts, add stress for hospitals, and drive migration. Drought, meanwhile, could affect nearly one in seven people who are expected to be employed by the agricultural sector by 2050. This would place further strain on demand for water, leading to further malnutrition and spreading infectious diseases. Extreme daily rainfall also puts economies and people?s jobs in jeopardy, especially in the manufacturing and services sectors in industrialized countries like the US, Japan and Germany, according to the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impacts Research. Racing to Resilience and Zero, Simultaneously The future is scary, and we are not changing fast enough. But we are on the right track - and the exponential change we?re already seeing means that it is still within our grasp. At the COP26 Resilience Hub, leading members of the Marrakech Partnership declared that they will drive credible, transparent and science-aligned climate targets and plans from businesses, investors, cities, states and regions through the Race to Resilience and UN-backed Race to Zero and Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ). The three campaigns are aligning the private sector and local governments around robust, transparent and science-based commitments to halve emissions and build resilience by 2030. This year, they are working to drive exponential changes across the highest-emitting sectors, set metrics for measuring the impact of resilience work for the most vulnerable communities and bring more businesses, investors and subnational governments into the race. The insurance giant is finding gaps in its own ?green? commitments to help drill this Great Amazon Reef. Can you call on AXA to pull out of disastrous oil and gas projects? Sign the petition Blue whales, coral reefs, rare dolphins? the Amazonian coast in Brazil sounds idyllic doesn?t it? But to AXA, it?s destruction is just another money making scheme. A bombshell report has just revealed how the French insurer has been finding gaps in its own "green" fossil fuel policy -- to insure exploratory oil and gas operations in what?s been called ?the Great Amazon Reef?. You helped force AXA to adopt its landmark oil and gas policy last year. But it appears their policy is still far too weak, too flimsy, and hypocritical, leaving the door open for more climate-killing oil and gas exploitation. Vladimir, nightmare oil expansion can?t go ahead without insurance. If we raise a huge, global outcry today -- we can call out AXA?s climate hypocrisy, and make oil and gas drilling in places like the Amazon totally uninsurable. AXA: honor your self-proclaimed climate leadership. Stop all new oil and gas expansion! AXA was hailed as a leader on climate at COP26 last year when it adopted its new progressive oil and gas policy. Nevertheless, hidden beneath the waters of Brazil's western Amazonian coast, the insurer is continuing to insure dirty fossil fuel companies who are intent on ravaging precious ecosystems for petrodollar profits. Brazil?s Atlantic coastlines are some of the world's richest in terms of biodiversity, home to many critically endangered species, such as manatees, dolphins, whales, and sea turtles. But underlying this landscape are massive reserves of oil and gas that have become juicy targets for planet-wrecking companies. And this new report shows AXA is all too keen to insure them, all the while touting its "progressive" oil and gas policy. But Vladimir, you?ve pushed AXA to do better for the planet before. So you can do it again. With our friends at Reclaim Finance and Insure Our Future, we?re telling AXA to put its money where its mouth is by ending financial ties to these projects, and close the loopholes in its flimsy green policies. Donating in the thousands, flooding key decision-makers with messages, delivering powerful solutions in meetings, and publishing groundbreaking investigations showing the harms caused by Big Tech: the Avaaz community has helped shape history this week, together with other awesome groups out there fighting alongside us and brave lawmakers who decided to listen. We?re not done yet, but if EU lawmakers stand strong in further negotiations, this could be the first wave of a cascade of new laws all over the world that finally put people before platforms and their profits: whenever Facebook, Youtube or TikTok would harm our societies at scale - from making dangerous disinformation go viral to spreading harmful content to kids or misusing our personal data -- our democracies would be able to ensure they take responsibility. ? Join the celebration by retweeting the Avaaz tweet here or posting on Facebook here Social media has brought powerful innovation to our societies. But for too long they have been able to evolve with literally just one goal: maximizing their profit, even if that meant radicalizing our societies, delegitimizing science or a rise in teen depression. Now, thanks to this regulation which some have called a new constitution for the Internet, we can demand a future where technologies are shaped around common values, and protect our fundamental human rights, instead of exploiting our weaknesses. Also, with so much disillusionment around politics, this regulation has shown Europe at its best. With almost all the demands from citizens, experts and civic society organizations landing in some way in the text just voted including: a.. Detoxify the algorithm-- make the platforms take responsibility for the harms they cause to our societies, like the viral spread of dangerous disinformation; b.. Big sanctions -- Face fines up to 6% of their global income, yes we're talking billions of dollars here, if they don?t fix their systems; c.. Open the black box -- Allow independent auditors, researchers and civic society to scrutinize their actions and uncover their wrongdoings; d.. Stop surveillance ads -- Ban the exploitation of children?s data, and our political beliefs or gender choices, to target us with ads. ? Join the celebration by retweeting the Avaaz tweet here or posting on Facebook here For over four years Avaaz has been on the forefront of the public push to force social media platforms to tackle the harms they create. From the EU, to the US, or Brazil, we have reported on disinformation and its scale, commissioning polls on its harmful effects, evaluating platforms' efforts to tackle them, and identifying their failures. None of this would have been possible without the Avaaz membership. It was a huge shared effort. But it paid off. And now we?re making history. Unhoused People Deserve Safety and Dignity! These Sleeping Pods Could Help. Sign Now As winter cold rips through most of the northern hemisphere, one chilly city in Germany has adopted a more humane approach to caring for unhoused people. Ulm has implemented sleeping pods for people who do not have overnight shelter and housing, giving them warmth and protection from brutal weather. One of the best parts of Ulm's approach is that, when a pod is activated, a social worker is notified and comes to check in on the person's safety in the morning. This approach ? of supporting unhoused populations with care and social support, rather than criminalization ? is not only more compassionate, it also works! These wonderful protective pods in Ulm have each been fitted with safety systems to measure carbon dioxide and temperature, as well as ventilation systems, lighting, solar panels, and more. They even have enough room to store each person's belongings and include space for a pet! One of the many American cities that could benefit from this model is Salt Lake City, Utah, which has a large number of unhoused people ? as well as a history of treating them inhumanely. Even in the midst of a pandemic, police have been witnessed violently destroying encampments throughout the city. But the example of Ulm shows there is another way. About the Book: Beckwith?s history of war, and in particular U.S. wars, details why war sells, the fallacies of common justifications for war, true costs of war, and sensible alternatives. A Mighty Case Against War proposes that this culturally supported, deeply entrenched system of governmental violence is simply too costly, destructive, counterproductive, and inhumane to leave unchallenged. An easily readable book, this is a resource for youth and adult education, and all who have wondered if a world beyond war is possible. "Kathy Beckwith's book lives up to its title. I probably can't imagine exactly how wonderful a world we'd have if everyone learned this book in history class, but I'd sure love to find out. I write about this same topic and nonetheless learned a great deal of new information here and found it to be brilliantly presented. The author's goal is clearly not to get us to believe something but to prod us into thinking. She provides multiple points of view on wars. Understanding what each side saw helps us grasp what Beckwith points out next: the alternative paths not taken that could have avoided each particular war. If we learn to anticipate war propaganda to come, if we are ready to reject it in real time, this book will have served its purpose, and more books like it will not be needed; war will have gone from 'inevitable' to archaic, humanity from endangered to resilient." --David Swanson, author of War Is A Lie "With clear, thoughtful prose and careful research, this book offers a systematic investigation into American wars and various nonviolent alternatives. The author shows U.S. military actions with new perspectives. The heart of the book is ?a gallop? through America?s 15 wars, not counting the ?secret? wars. It is here that the author?s training as a mediator shows, for she carefully considers the views of both sides before considering possible alternatives to war. Particularly interesting are her discussions of nonviolent alternatives to World War II and the American Revolution. The book concludes with a series of chapters that address various justifications for war that are commonly invoked. The author writes in an accessible way about these complex issues, making this book ideal for high school students interested in a view of U.S. history not presented in the textbooks, as well as any reader concerned about the role of the U.S. military in conflicts around the world." --Daemion Lee, review for Skipping Stones magazine LEARN MORE AND RESERVE YOUR SPOT. About the Author: Kathy Beckwith is a mediation trainer from Dayton, Oregon, working with schools (K-12) and community mediation programs. She is a mediator in parent/teen, victim/offender, and neighborhood mediation, and volunteers as a school mediation coach. Kathy became concerned about America?s strong reliance on war as a means of resolving international conflict. That concern led to research and study, and finally to this book. She discovered that she had, indeed, missed some things in U.S. History class. Kathy's latest book, just out in 2021 is a young adult novel - ENCOUNTER: When Religions Become Classmates - From Oregon to India and Back. Kathy is also the author of the picture book Playing War; a young adult novel, Critical Mass, dealing with sexual abuse in the lives of teens; and two books related to problem-solving, If You Choose Not to Hit, and Don?t Shoot! We May Both Be on the Same Side. Kathy is a graduate of Northwest Nazarene University, Nampa, Idaho. She has been a Peace Corps volunteer, caregiver in a residential treatment home for boys, secretary for a geological exploration office, teacher at an international school in South India, and host parent for exchange students, in addition to living and playing with her family on a small farm where wild blackberries abound. After its historic launch in September of last year, the Legal Empowerment Fund (LEF) is now set to distribute millions in long-term core funding to grassroots justice groups across the globe. The Fund for Global Human Rights, which hosts the LEF, is accepting applications for the first-round of funding through February 18th, 2022. World leaders and donors have overlooked or avoided supporting grassroots groups that combine law and organizing to equip communities to fight back against injustice and bring about systemic change. The Legal Empowerment Fund marks a normative shift ? one that our community made happen. For over three years, members of the Legal Empowerment Network have come together through the Justice For All campaign to call for increased funding and protection for grassroots justice defenders. The Legal Empowerment Fund is a direct result of our collective action. Apply now The LEF aims to raise $100 million over 10 years to strengthen the legal empowerment movement. In its first funding cycle, it will focus on grassroots groups that have had difficulty accessing traditional grant opportunities. To this end, proposals can be submitted in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Arabic, and in written or video/audio format. This time, 20 gray wolves were slaughtered after they wandered from the safety of Yellowstone across the park's border into Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. Within just a few months, more wolves were killed in this corner of the country than in any single season since the species were reintroduced to the area over 25 years ago. This most recent instance of violence against these iconic animals is, unfortunately, part of a pattern. This specific region of the U.S. lifted certain protections for wolves nearly a decade ago, and in 2020 Trump officially stripped the species of federal protections. Since then, many hunting seasons have vastly exceeded their kill quota, some wolves are turning up poisoned, Indigenous tribes' rights and resources are being infringed upon, and wolves like these 20 -- which should have been protected -- are turning up dead just for roaming like wolves do. Message-ID: <70E51676177845908C3C12E2C840F3FD@evol.sp.ru> the Muslim Ban is still hurting families, Vladimir. As salaamu alaykum, ? Today marks 5 years since Trump introduced the first Muslim Ban. It's now been over 1 year since Biden repealed the Muslim and African bans in all its forms. And yet the families impacted by the bans continue to be separated. Add your name to our open letter to the White House here: Demand President Biden and Vice President Harris stop upholding Trump?s racist immigration bans and allow entry to individuals and families impacted by the bans NOW. The Muslim Ban is still hurting families. Rescinding Trump's Muslim and African Bans was a necessary first step ? one that took years of organizing and serious people power to achieve. But it's not enough by itself. Here's why: As it stands, only 41,000 visa recipients who were set to enter the U.S. and only stopped by Trump's racist bans remain in limbo ? and without swift action by the White House will have to wait years, if ever, to re-enter even with the bans rescinded.1 And what's more: untold numbers of Muslim and African families torn apart by Trump's bans remain separated and/or endangered. Just yesterday, the Huffington Post published a new piece laying out the price of inaction ? among what they discovered was over "800 cases in which the ban separated partners from spouses and parents from children [...] For many of those families, the ban has caused irreparable damage."2 It's on the White House to take action. Click here to add your name. We know that at least thousands of families remain separated by Trump's hatred and Biden's inaction. We hear their stories all the time. Stories like that of Mohammed, who spent all of the money he had to get an opportunity to live in the United States and leave Yemen as it underwent a grave humanitarian catastrophe amidst U.S.-funded Saudi-led bombing. He won the diversity visa lottery, and was ready to make the trip ? and then was stripped of his visa because of Trump's bans. We could fill this email, over and over again, with stories like this, and then some. It all comes back to this: just because Trump?s Muslim and African Ban was ended on paper doesn?t mean the families separated by it get reunited in reality ? or the refugees it failed get protected in real life. Add your name to demand #NoMuslimBanEver. Families and individuals could wait years unless the Biden administration takes action. Many can?t afford to go through the process again. We need Biden to stop continuing Trump's legacy on immigration and take concrete steps: a.. Issue clear guidance regarding the next steps for applicants denied under the Muslim and African Bans. b.. Immediately and automatically reconsider, reopen, and expedite all immigrant and non-immigrant visa applications subject to the Muslim and African Bans that have not yet been granted, including those denied during the Trump years. c.. Grant humanitarian parole to those who won the diversity visa lottery during the Trump years. The issue isn't that we don't know how to redress the harms done by Trump's bans. The issue is that we need the White House to actually take those steps. Tell President Biden and Vice President Harris that rescinding Trump's policies in theory isn't enough ? they need to be undone in practice. Thank you for everything you do. Total and Chevron to exit Myanmar Message-ID: Hi, WE DID IT! After we grew our petition to over 100,000 signers urging Total and Chevron to suspend payments to the Myanmar military, our allies in Myanmar, Korea, France, and the US shared it and used it in advocacy meetings with the companies and governments. And it worked! After months of pressure, Total and Chevron just announced they will withdraw their business from Myanmar. With allies, we translated the petition into Burmese which gave people from Myanmar a platform to have their voices heard. Even Burmese people working for the energy companies stood by our ask. And with partners and activists, we organized demonstrations across the US and delivered our voices directly to the companies ? including at the Chevron AGM. Through a shareholder resolution filed by allies, Burmese human rights defender Khin Ohmar delivered our call through a video that was presented at the AGM and viewed by shareholders and executives alike. Similarly, in its press release, Total noted that it felt pressure from shareholders and from people inside Myanmar and their allies around the world. Vladimir, it is thanks to supporters like you that we were able to build up pressure that eventually forced the companies to withdraw their support to the murderous Myanmar military. We also took our message directly to the US Treasury Department, calling on the US to place sanctions on the state-owned oil and gas company, MOGE -- the main financial lifeline for the brutal Myanmar military. We delivered a briefing and exchanged emails with Secretary Yellen?s staff and parked a mobile billboard right outside the Treasury Dept. in DC while we tweeted at their handle to go look outside. We then shared our campaign and written materials with Senator Merkley?s staff who were in the process of writing a letter to the Biden administration calling for sanctions on MOGE. From its genocidal attacks on the Rohingya to the recent bloody coup which has killed over 1400 people and forced millions into a humanitarian crisis ? now more than ever we must keep up the pressure on the US, France, and other governments to suspend economic ties with the military until democracy is restored. Will you retweet our image calling on the Treasury department to sanction MOGE? It will help keep up the pressure on the Biden administration right when we need it. That?s it for now. Camels Are Forced to Wrestle with Each Other Until One Falls Over or Shows Fear Sign Now The annual International Camel Wrestling Festival is held each year in western Turkey. Handlers bring hundreds of camels covered in bright decorations ? as well as muzzles to keep the animals from maiming each other through bite wounds. Thousands of eager spectators crowd together to watch the tournament, setting up barbecues and roaring as the camels dominate each other. Vendors even sell camel meat snacks and street food to viewers who munch on the cousins of the very animals they're watching. Ultimately, these animals will be made to tussle with each other until humans decide one of them is the victor ? usually because one of them topples over, screams out, or retreats in fear. This year, handlers gathered together 152 camels for the contest's 40th event, but Turkish animal lovers spoke out in the camels' defense to raise public awareness about cruelty and exploitation. These animals are exposed to unnatural conditions ? including loud noises and training tactics ? that cause them to feel confusion, stress, tension, and aggression. That is inhumane, especially since these creatures are put through all this just for human entertainment. It's time for us to stand with animal lovers in Turkey and elevate their voices. Climate Change is Dehydrating Koalas Until They Fall Off Trees, Unable to Cope Sign Now Climate change is drying out the planet, causing drought, famine, wildfires ? and making parched koalas drop from trees. These otherwise very hardy creatures evolved to survive previous waves of heat, dry spells, floods, and more, but they simply can't handle the level of intensity they are now facing. Researchers in Australia are finding evidence of dehydrated, desperate koalas crawling into humans' backyards to lap up water in birdbaths. And in severe cases, their severe lack of water has caused these expert tree-climbers to fall out of their trees. Unlike humans, wildlife are completely powerless to do anything about climate devastation. These koalas are completely at the mercy of our leaders' action or inaction about global warming. Despite constantly-worsening climate conditions, the Australian government seems committed to making the problem more severe. At the end of 2021, while the United Nations shared data confirming that we must end fossil fuel reliance, Australia's federal leaders instead began exploring the possibility of allowing more oil and gas extraction off their coasts. Such activities would unequivocally exacerbate global warming ? meaning koalas will suffer. This species is already endangered, and we can't afford to take risks with their survival. Sign the petition to tell the Australian government that it must save the koalas by fighting climate change, including by banning any further drilling off their coasts! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. On Thursday, January 27, 2022, Australia recorded its deadliest day yet for heatwave-related deaths. Koalas are sure to be impacted, too. Victory: Shark Fishing Has Been Banned in Hawaii! Florida Must Follow Suit! Sign Now Once again, Hawaii is on the frontlines of shark protection. In 2010, the state banned the "possession, sale, trade, and distribution of shark fins." And now, after years of hard work by environmentalists and animal rights groups, shark fishing is officially banned in Hawaiian waters! This crucial step will help protect some of our sea's most impressive predators, and the ecosystems in which they play a vital role. But we can't stop there -- ocean conservation knows no state lines. It is more important now than ever that sharks are protected by law. According to a recent study, global shark populations have plummeted since 1970, falling by over 70%. Worse yet, of the oceanic species examined in study, 24 of 31 shark and ray species are now threatened with extinction. Three of those sharks are in such dramatic decline that they are classified as critically endangered, the highest category of threatened species offered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. We must sound the alarm on protecting these sharks before it is too late! Conservation can be complex, given the many factors that contribute to a particular species decline. But with sharks, the answer is simple: stop fishing them. Scientists have repeatedly found overfishing to be a primary cause of species decline, so why are states still allowing sharks to be fished in their waters? If Florida cares about the health of their oceans, the state legislature must act now to ensure sharks are protected and follow Hawaii's lead. Sign the petition now to demand shark fishing be banned in Florida! Thank you, Lauren Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Hawaii just banned shark fishing, but they need even more help if they are doing to survive. Sign to demand Florida ban shark fishing next!
