This is part of a series of 6-weekly emails written by our Director telling stories to help you understand what the heck we're trying to do and where you might fit in. Hi, As 2021 came to a close and we looked ahead to a new year, I asked what gave you hope. Thousands of you took the time to answer. With 2022 underway, I wanted to get back to you and share some of the amazing responses. There were so many and each put a smile on our face when the team read them. Here are some highlights: --- ?The power of protest for the environment. That people don't surrender to hopelessness in spite of horrors that are going on. That we don't turn a blind eye.? - Shari, UK --- "That WeMove Europe is such a fantastic community putting all its energy into stopping the profiteers from doing more damage to our world and work for a positive turnaround for our future." - Karlheinz, Germany --- ?With all that is going on it is sometimes hard to recall all that has gone on through the year but I am quite sure that many people who sign petitions, share, fill in surveys and write letters to people or organisations feel that personal little bit of triumph, smile and clench their fist as I do!? - Angela, Spain --- This community is brimming with energy to make things better. And together with you, WeMove Europe can match that enthusiasm to find ways to make change happen in 2022. >From making corporations pay their fair share to keeping pesticides out of our food and ensuring energy from gas or burning forests is not labelled as renewable. To win, we?ll need a strong plan for the year. And no plan is complete without your input, Vladimir. Because every one of us - including you - has a say in what we do. So, where should we invest our time? TAKE THE SURVEY We have to make difficult choices because we cannot do it all. This survey does just that. What do you think? Mushrooms Can Help Solve the Climate Crisis. Why Are They Not Being Researched? Sign Now The United States government has known for decades that greenhouse gas emissions cause global warming, yet the country's emissions have increased regardless. Now data shows that the past 7 years have been the hottest ever recorded on planet Earth. In fact, according to a recent report, the Earth's global average temperature is 73% of the way to the horrific 1.5 degree threshold that scientists warn we must stay under at all costs. And there is one powerful player not being utilized in the fight against climate change: the mighty mushroom. Mycelium ? a component of fungi ? provides an easy, risk-free way to reduce many of our worst environmental impacts. Researchers are finding that mushrooms and mycelium may be useful in various eco-improving projects, including cleaning up oil spills, reducing pollution, and potentially even reversing climate change. Mycelium stores carbon in the soil, meaning it has the potential to be a crucial natural way to capture carbon from the air and sequester it away underground. Because we as a species have already emitted so much greenhouse gas, investing in such potent carbon sinks is critical. Why are leaders not sufficiently exploring this simple path to fighting climate change and saving lives? Sign the petition to demand that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency take every measure possible to address the looming climate crisis, including by investing in mushroom research for carbon sinks and pollution cleanup! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. There is no reason not to invest in research that has the potential to help save millions of lives ? human, animal, and more ? from climate disaster. It?s made from the same dirty fossil fuels that are fueling the climate crisis. And it doesn?t decompose! A plastic bottle breaks down into tiny, invisible pieces that can travel around the world through water and air, contaminating all life on Earth. Even rain is polluted with plastic. Scientists in the US found that rain is flooding protected national parks with 1,000 tons of microplastics every year -- that's the equivalent of pouring up to 300 million plastic bottles! This is a planetary emergency, and we need an urgent, coordinated global response. That?s why more than 100 countries are calling for a binding global treaty, which could bring an end to the throwaway-plastic culture, and transition the world towards a future that protects people, wildlife and our climate. But big oil, chemical firms and major plastic-manufacturing countries are already trying to weaken the plan. So we need to mobilise fast, and show our governments at the key UN meeting this month that people everywhere demand the strongest possible treaty to end the plastic plague: Sign here: END PLASTIC POLLUTION We?ve done it before. Our movement spearheaded the mobilisations that led to the landmark Climate Paris Agreement, and more recently we mobilised from around the world to stop rich countries from dumping their plastic waste onto low-income nations. We know that such battles can be long, and treaties don?t always deliver the results we need, fast enough. But this is the best chance we ever had to kick-start a coordinated, international response ? so we all have to speak out now, and keep pushing until we win a world safe from plastic. Stand with Pet Owners in China Who Say that Laws Against Animal Cruelty Are Long Overdue! Sign Now More pet owners live in China than in any other nation on Earth, with the exception of the United States. However, the country's leaders have not yet created a comprehensive policy banning animal cruelty. The few laws that do exist deal primarily with animal "management," but not their protection. Officials did draft a policy to protect domestic animals back in 2009, but never implemented it ? in part because of a small, vocal minority of regressive thinkers who stand in stark contrast to the many pet owners in China. This small, conservative group still dominates conversations about animal cruelty. But tens of millions of Chinese citizens support formalizing animal protections into law. In the past few years, a number of horrific incidents of abusive, cruel behavior towards animals have gained media attention. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, a pet corgi was beaten and killed by a worker after its owner was placed in quarantine. A cat was found dead on a Shanghai university campus with clear signs of abuse. In the Anhui province, a security guard is suspected of brutally hanging a dog to death from a tree. But even beating and harming pets is not a clear violations of the law. It's time for Chinese authorities to follow the demands of the people and take these incidents ? as well as all other forms of animal abuse ? seriously! Sign the petition to implore the Chinese government to finally pass legislation protecting beloved pet animals! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Please donate now A few days ago, we rescued 35 wild horses and foals from drowning in a flooded river in Alexander Bay, South Africa. After a dangerous rescue mission, the horses were safely brought to dry land, but they are terribly weak and very hungry. Having spent a week submerged in water, their hooves have begun to rot - plus they are starving, dehydrated and weak. You know that Network for Animals will never give up on an animal in its most desperate time of need. We cannot abandon these horses! We pledge to do everything in our power to help them heal from their terrible ordeal and to be by their side until they are strong again. Vladimir, can the horses and their foals count on your support? Please donate now In case you missed the story, here?s what happened? Just days ago, heavy flooding along the Orange River in Namaqualand, South Africa, left 32 horses and three foals stranded on tiny islands surrounded by rising waters. As the river swelled from torrential rains and water levels rose ever more rapidly, the trapped animals became increasingly frightened, knowing death by drowning was approaching. To make the situation even more heartbreaking, some of the horses were tethered! We raced into action, driving ten hours to the remote town of Alexander Bay, determined to save them all. They faced a horrific death in a raging flood. We were their only hope! We leaped into ACTION! There was no other option! To make the situation even more fraught, the horses are terrified of humans. Technically, the horses have owners but they flee from them whenever they can. If they are captured, they are used, tethered, beaten and starved - they want nothing to do with humans. The horses and foals were foraging for food near the river when a maelstrom descended on them. The flood was so sudden and so fierce, they had no chance of escape. An eleventh-hour rescue mission was the only chance they had! Please donate now We learned about the situation when the National Sea Rescue Institutes (NSRI) of South Africa and Namibia put out URGENT pleas for help. Network for Animals was the only organization to respond. As we always do when animals are in critical need, we sprang into action along with our partner, the Have A Heart Equine Sanctuary (HAHES), experts in horse rescues and rehabilitation. After a long and grueling drive through the desert to the little town of Alexander Bay on the border of Namibia and South Africa, our team linked up with the NSRI experts. Rescue craft were launched into the roiling water along with NRSI rescue swimmers and Namibian swimmer volunteers. The plan was to drive the horses from island to island until they reached an area where our team could capture and calm them before swimmers guided them to safety. Heartbreakingly, the horses are so petrified of humans that they kept trying to get away. It took a massive and exhausting effort, but we finally managed to get them to a safe island with enough grazing and fresh water to wait out the flood. Only when the waters subside can we bring them to shore. Without the EMERGENCY RESCUE MISSION funded by NFA (before we could even reach out to supporters for help), the horses and their young - starving and dehydrated - would have been swept away to their deaths. Against all odds, every single one of the 32 horses and three foals are safe! But they are weak, terrified and in need of intensive rehabilitation after their ordeal. NOW, the hard work really begins. Our team is working as hard as it can to treat every horse, but all the animals need intensive care because they are starving, terrified and weak. After days of being stranded, with floodwaters rising and no access to food or drinkable water, these poor creatures are broken. Some of their worst injuries are to their hooves: because they were submerged in water for a week, their hooves have begun to rot, making it even harder for them to support the weight of their exhausted, battered bodies. Vets are standing by on the mainland, ready to receive and treat the horses as soon as they arrive. This is where the horses really need your help. They need nutritious food, special supplements, hydration, veterinary care, sedatives and regular monitoring. Our best estimate is this care will cost approximately $8,750 (?6,460) for the first month. We have a plan in place to get 40 hay bales to the island where the horses are, but we also need to cover the cost of transport to get items to the water-logged region. Please donate now That?s why we are writing to you now. We must do everything we can to rehabilitate the horses and give them a second chance at a peaceful life. But now we must do everything we can to rehabilitate the horses and give them a second chance at a peaceful life. And this is exactly what we are pledged to do. Please, if you possibly can, donate right away. As an animal lover, you?ll know that now is when they need us most. Your support today will make all the difference! For the animals, Brian and Gloria Davies (and Max and Flora!) Founders Network for Animals P.S. This time in the Amazon rainforest. Message-ID: Barrels and barrels of oil spilled out into the Ecuadorian rainforest. Yet Another Oil Spill is Poisoning Water that Wildlife and People in the Amazon Rely On Sign Now During a recent pipeline rupture in Ecuador, an untold number of barrels spilled out, polluting multiple acres of a protected Amazonian rainforest area. All we do know so far is that countless wildlife species, as well as the Indigenous communities of Ecuador, are paying the horrible daily costs. After a few days, oil is already reaching the Coca River, one of the Ecuadorian Amazon's largest. This means the water is undrinkable and unusable. Fish are inedible. Meanwhile, the precious animals of the rainforest are also suffering as their environment is rendered inhabitable and full of poisons. It all started when a pipeline owned by the private company OCP Ecuador became damaged during a mudslide late last month. While this might seem like a freak accident, it's far from the first time such a thing has happened to OCP's pipelines ? yet the company has clearly not taken sufficient action to ensure their pipelines are safe and fully protected from such events. Yet again, their equipment has broken, resulting in horror for animals and humans alike. Both OCP and the Ecuadorian government owe it to the Indigenous communities and animals to come up with a plan to provide food and water to those who rely on the Coca River, and to implement a comprehensive cleanup plan to contain and remove the deadly pollution. Sign the petition to stand with Indigenous communities and wildlife in the Ecuadorian Amazon and demand accountability after this oil spill! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. These indigenous leaders already run a wildly successful conservancy and if they can show they have the resources to acquire the land and remove the fencing that threatens migrating herds, the sellers say they have a deal. But investors are already calling with big offers, so they need to move fast -- that's where we come in! The land could be swept into an international investor agreement any day, and then all hopes of preserving this wildlife corridor would be lost. And the more money we raise, the more land the Maasai can clear and maintain! Giving them the power to expand the survival of thousands of species! For decades, private landowners have put up fences throughout Maasai Mara, where wildlife need to be able to roam free in order to survive. Wildebeests, giraffes and other creatures then get trapped in the wire, dying slow, painful deaths. Nashulai Maasai Conservancy changed that by uniting 6,000 acres where humans and animals now live side-by-side, reviving ancient practices and allowing all to flourish. They?ve been recognized by the UN for restoring the threatened ecosystem, all while reducing poverty among their community by training and paying young people to patrol and protect the land. In just five years, the Nashulai Maasai Conservancy has turned once abandoned land into a thriving home to 5,000 wildebeests and zebras, 100 giraffes, and five families of elephants, including 10 babies born in recent months! And by creating jobs patrolling the area, they?ve found a groundbreaking way to protect their livelihoods and their land. If we can raise enough, the local community can move quickly to join the conservancy, tear down the fences, and develop local capacity to protect and regenerate this expanded wildlife corridor. Soya feeds cows, chickens, and pigs in Europe. But if we join forces now, this community and its partners can make sure the EU passes a law that could stop this disaster. Sign NOW Hi, In South America, forests like the Amazon are cut and burned to make way for vast soybean fields. Iconic species like the jaguar are losing their homes. Thousands of people living in forests are forced to flee. [1] All to produce soy and meat. Europe is complicit in this disaster. Every year our governments import millions of tons of soybeans into Europe to feed cows, chickens, and pigs that are slaughtered for meat. [2] In just a few days, the European Union will start negotiations on a new law that could ban the sale of all products made in deforested areas. [3] But meanwhile the soy and meat companies are doing everything they can to weaken this law, so they can protect their profits. [4] Together with you, Vladimir, this community is made up of over 1.2 million people. And, with 170 partner organisations standing by our side, we can make a big impact. A massive petition signed by hundreds of thousands of Europeans can?t be ignored and will show the EU where the public stands. So add your voice and make sure the EU listens to people, and not companies. Sign now to ban forest-killing products Every minute, 2,400 trees are cut down globally. This means a forest the size of Belgium disappears every year. [5] The food industry?s addiction to soy is responsible for this disaster. They?re destroying jungles, rainforests, and savannahs to build giant soy farms. All so they can churn out soy-based animal feed to be used in industrial farms in Europe. And lobbyists from the soy and meat industries are already on the move. They?re pushing the EU to adopt a law with loopholes for their products, so they can continue to cut away at our forests. [6] We can all change this now, but only if we take action. Europe is the second biggest consumer market in the world - so if we win, we would have a huge impact on companies that destroy forests to sell food in our supermarkets. [7] Add your voice and show that our people power is stronger than the corporate lobby. Yes, count me in! Whether it?s protecting orangutans from palm oil destruction in Indonesia, or stopping the burning of European forests for fake renewable energy, our community has always fought to save our trees. Together, let?s do it again and finally ban all products in Europe that destroy our forests. Sign now. The draft law would, for the first time, require companies selling certain products on the EU market to trace their origin and show that they are not linked to forest destruction or forest degradation. Message-ID: UN Global Climate Action 8 February 2022 High Level Climate Champions Newsletter Message to Stakeholders We hope you have all recovered from the COP26 in Glasgow and are excited for another busy and fruitful year ahead. We are excited to be starting a new relationship with the Egyptian COP27 Presidency, and look forward to the appointment of the Egyptian High-Level Champion. Once that happens, the Champions will jointly develop and share this year?s work plan to implement the five-year Improved Marrakech Partnership for enhancing ambition plan, welcomed by Parties at COP26 and included themes such as mobilizing private finance for developing countries, strengthening resilience, regionalization and enhancing credibility and transparency. Watch this space for more, and very much look forward to collaborating with all of you this year! Time to Bridge the Gap Between Awareness and Action At COP26, our national and global self interests aligned in a way that drove cooperation and resulted in the Glasgow Climate Pact, COP26 President Alok Sharma said in a recent speech at Chatham House. That pact is a success. It recognizes the science and calls on countries to phase down unabated coal-fired power and phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies. It asks countries to revisit and strengthen their 2030 emission reduction targets by the end of this year. And it commits countries to scale up climate finance and double finance for adaptation by 2025. ?Yet, at the moment they are just words on a page,? Sharma said. ?And unless we honour the promises made, to turn the commitments in the Glasgow Climate Pact into action, they will wither on the vine.? And the world is still far off the path to stabilizing global warming at 1.5?C, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa said at Project Syndicate?s Green Growth event. ?It?s why COP26 was not the end of anything. It was an important step forward, but our work and the work of Parties continues towards COP27.? This transformation from commitment to reality involves the entire global economy, and it won?t reach the necessary speed and scale without leadership from businesses, investors, cities, regions and civil society encouraging their governments to keep raising ambitions. Private sector and local government leaders understand the cost of doing nothing and benefits of acting now better than ever before, as new research shows. Among business executives surveyed late last year, 97% said their companies had already been negatively impacted by climate change, of which half saw impacts on their operations, according to Deloitte?s 2022 CxO Sustainability Report. The number of executives who see the world at a tipping point for responding to the climate crisis jumped to 79% in late 2021, from 59% eight months earlier. Similarly, ?climate action failure? was the number one risk cited by leaders in business, government and civil society in the World Economic Forum?s 2022 Global Risks Perception Survey. That was followed by concerns about extreme weather due to climate change, and biodiversity loss. However, there is still a disconnect between the perceived risks leaders see and the action they take, Deloitte found. Only two-thirds of executives said their organizations had shifted to more sustainable materials and increased energy efficiency. This is our year to bridge that disconnect. In his speech, Sharma set out the COP26 Presidency?s four priorities for 2022: 1.. Keep the temperature limit of 1.5?C within reach by setting plans to reach net zero emissions before 2050 and strengthening emission reduction targets for 2030. 2.. Double finance for adaptation and advance talks on loss and damage. 3.. Set plans to deliver the developed world?s commitment of US$100 billion per year in climate finance and discuss a new goal for 2025. 4.. Push action across key sectors, including energy, cars and deforestation. The transition comes with costs, but if managed well, they will be outweighed by benefits. Reaching net zero by 2050 requires around US$9.2 trillion per year of capital spending on physical assets for energy and land use from 2021, according to McKinsey?s Net Zero Transition report. But it could lead to 15 million net new jobs. In Asia Pacific, acting on climate change would add US$47 trillion to the region?s economies by 2070 - whereas failure to act would wipe US$96 trillion by 2070, according to Deloitte. In Europe, reaching net zero emissions by 2050 would add ?730 billion (US$825 billion) to the economies by 2070, whereas inaction would cost ?6 trillion (US$6.7 trillion). In the United States, action would lead to a US$3 trillion gain by 2070, inaction to a US$14.5 trillion loss. Resilient Green Shipping The shipping industry accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Its emissions already rose by 4.9% in 2021 from 2020, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, according to a report by shipbroker Simpson Spence Young. If left unchecked, shipping emissions could grow by 50% from 2008 levels by 2050, making net zero emissions by 2050 all but unattainable. We saw significant progress in commitment in Glasgow, with initiatives announced to establish zero-emission shipping routes, accelerate the sector?s decarbonization and ensure a just and people-centred transition. The Climate Vulnerable Forum of 55 countries called at COP26 for a mandatory levy on international shipping emissions in line with limiting warming to 1.5?C, and for the revenues to be used for urgent climate action. The cities and the private sector are already moving in that direction. In January, the ports of Los Angeles and Shanghai, along with C40 Cities agreed to create the world?s first green shipping corridor, between the US and China. AP Moller-Maersk also moved its net zero target up to 2040, from 2050, in response to growing customer demand for clean transport and technological advances. It aims to reduce absolute emissions by 35-50% between 2020 and 2030. But cutting emissions is not enough. To be robust and sustainable, the shipping industry?s race to zero emissions must support a just and equitable transition for people, account for the impact of a changing climate, and build the resilience of coastal and port communities and infrastructures already suffering from these impacts. Coastal urban areas could face more than US$1 trillion per year in costs by 2050 from the effects of rising sea levels and extreme weather events. Small island developing states and least developed countries would bear the brunt of these costs, exacerbating today?s inequalities. So the sector that?s responsible for 90% of our trade needs to race to zero emissions and greater resilience at the same time - and with speed. Investing in the resilience of ports and surrounding communities is important to both challenges. Ports can become hubs for clean shore power systems and shipping fuels, which can be connected to domestic power grids. This will help to decarbonize cities and create jobs. Work to restore and protect the nature around ports can further buffer coastal zones against rising sea levels, extreme storms and heat, and support jobs and livelihoods. Turning the COP26 Clydebank Declaration for Green Shipping Corridors into reality will be especially important to the sector?s race to zero emissions and resilience. In it, 22 countries committed to establish at least six zero-emission shipping routes by 2025, saying they can catalyze and accelerate the maritime sector?s decarbonization and unlock new business opportunities and socioeconomic benefits. The UN?s One Ocean Summit, in France on 9-11 February, offers an opportunity for governments, multilateral institutions, business leaders and civil society to accelerate the roll-out of operational green corridors, which will showcase zero-emission ships and resilient ports and communities. Pending the expected final approval, the ban would see each fur farm in the country closed completely within six months ??? saving the raccoons, foxes, chinchillas, and mink within them from a horrific fate. This is a massive victory for animal rights! Sign now to demand the entire European Union ban fur farming! For decades, animal rights activists have shown the world what fur farming actually means for the animals involved. Animals in the industry are typically born into filthy, tight cages with little to no room to move around. Behaviors like self-mutilation and cannibalism of fellow dead animals are not uncommon in these spaces, where animals are forced to endure both physical and psychological torture. These farms are also bad for the human employees who work there, with multiple COVID-19 outbreaks linked to mink farming. Italy's move is a great step and some other countries have outlawed it too. It's 2022. Why Are We Still Expanding Parts of the Polluting Coal Industry? Sign Now 2021 was yet another one of the hottest years in recorded human history. And despite the increasingly obvious risk of climate catastrophe, there is still infrastructure being built and restored to support coal exports in California. Devastatingly, a section of railway located in Humboldt County, along the North Coast, is being eyed for restoration just so it can transport polluting, dangerous coal through vulnerable ecosystems and communities. Not only has the dying coal industry contributed greatly to our dying planet, helping put us on the verge of a climate crisis and threatening the global community. Coal transport hurts those closest to it even more immediately. Coal dust spreads during transportation, and can severely threaten community health, leading to asthma, cardiac disease, prenatal risks, and perhaps most importantly, increased mortality from COVID-19. In Humboldt County, which has disproportionately high rates of poverty and where the death rate is 40% higher than the state average, the toll this new coal export plan would take on the vulnerable people there is far too high. We must insist that California's legislature stops this disastrous plan from going forward. Sign the petition to stop coal expansion in Humboldt County, California! The Dept. of Defense (DOD) announced Wednesday that the U.S. will deploy an additional 3,000 troops to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member countries in Eastern Europe amid Russia?s ongoing military buildup on Ukraine?s borders. b.. The deployment will involve troops currently in Europe and in the continental U.S. and is being done on a bilateral or trilateral basis at the invitation of the governments involved. Over the last several months, Russia has undertaken a significant military buildup on Ukraine?s border with well over 100,000 troops in close proximity to the border and more personnel in staging areas where they could quickly be moved to the front. b.. The buildup is larger than what occurred before Russia illegally annexed Crimea from Ukraine and launched an invasion of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine in 2014, where it still supports a separatist insurgency. The ongoing conflict has led to more than 14,000 deaths to date. c.. The Russian military presence has grown to more than 130,000 troops in areas near Ukraine?s border in recent days and is expected to grow larger as troops arrive in Belarus for what Russia says are planned exercises. d.. Russia?s buildup also involves advanced equipment, including several short-range Iskander ballistic missile brigades and some of its S-400 surface-to-air missile system. It also has a significant naval presence in the Mediterranean Sea, where Russian warships from the Baltic Fleet and Pacific Fleet are linking up. e.. It?s still unclear whether Putin has decided to attack Ukraine, and he has said he has no plans to do so. Kirby said on Wednesday that U.S. officials still don?t know whether Putin has made up his mind whether to re-invade Ukraine. However, the multi-pronged buildup of military assets gives Putin the ability to threaten Ukraine by land from the south via Crimea, from the east via the Donbas, or the north from Belarus; and by sea through a potential amphibious landing from the Black Sea. f.. Russia is reportedly laying the groundwork for a ?false flag? operation to use as justification for an attack on Ukraine. On January 27th, the U.S. announced sanctions against several Russian-backed officials who were being recruited to undermine Ukraine?s government and to prepare to take over the country?s government and control the country?s critical infrastructure during a Russian occupation. The British government said it also has gathered intelligence about an effort by Moscow to install a pro-Kremlin leader in Ukraine through a coup. RELATED READING a.. Hi, This is outrageous. French oil giant Total has just announced its biggest profits yet. While Total have the highest profits of any French company ever [1], people across the world are dealing with the deadly impacts of climate disasters caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Others are struggling to get food or stay warm because of the energy price hikes by these fossil fuel giants. Companies like this must be stopped. And we can stop them if we cut their funding. So, right now, thousands of us across the world are taking to social media to tarnish this oil giant?s public image and make it harder for them to get funding from banks for their destructive projects. Together, let's denounce Total's hypocrisy and the impact of its destructive projects on people and our planet. Take action now: send a tweet to highlight how Total is profiting from the climate crisis! Hijack Total's Facebook comments Join the Twitter storm Call them out on LinkedIn Together, we can show the world who the real villains of this story are: fossil fuel companies who make billions off the climate crisis, and the banks that fund them. In solidarity, Ellie for 350.org P.S. Why are we mainly taking action on Twitter? Because today, Twitter represents the most effective way to publicly challenge a company, and, at the same time, attract the attention of the media. If you don't have a Twitter account, you can set one up easily, or find more ways to take part in the digital storm here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources: [1] Le Monde (in French) Donate PO Box 843004, Boston, MA 02284-3004 This email was sent to vflew at lew.spb.org. But we can stop them by changing the rules for global banks and forcing them to halt their climate-wrecking investments. Our plan? Mobilize people like you, Vladimir, to share your concerns and stories with the powerful regulators who are - at this very moment - deciding the new rules on fossil fuel finance. Together, we can drown out the voices of the powerful lobbies and get the regulators to listen and change the rules for good! Join our partner?s workshop on Tuesday, February 15th at 17:00 GMT to help change the rules for global banks, to stop them pumping money to dangerous fossil fuels! The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), a group of financial regulation standard-setters who hold immense power, are holding a ?consultation? on the new rules next week. This is a niche consultation, and as usual, the voices of industry & lobbyists will be heard, but not those of the youth and communities most affected by these decisions in the long term - those suffering climate impacts and fighting for their future. But by clubbing together, we can take them by surprise by answering their consultation en masse. How? Take part in this open online consultation, tell your story about your experience with climate change and the climate movement, and demand new banking rules on fossil fuel exploration and expansion. To make this as easy as possible, we're running workshops alongside our partners* at The Sunrise Project and Positive Money on Tuesday, February 15th at 17:00 GMT to help activist groups be part of this and submit their response easily. The workshop will: a.. create a space for sharing personal experiences, and b.. Walk you through how to respond to BCBS consultation, underlining the importance of justice and personal impact of the radical uncertainty surrounding climate-related financial risks. Together we want to show the regulators that we are ready to hold them accountable and we can?t be ignored. But 98% of it has already been decimated by logging?and a palm oil giant wants to destroy what little is left. Fortunately, a tiny local community is fighting back with all their might ? and taking these planet-destroyers to court! And while they wait for the lawsuit, they?ve been peacefully organizing to defend their forest against this merciless ransacking. They?ve blocked roads and done everything they can to slow down Energy Palm?s plans. But the moment the company got wind of the legal action, they retaliated with a lawsuit of their own, falsely accusing this tiny community of causing hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage. This is a lie. Even police reports don?t show any material damage caused by Indigenous organizing efforts. But Energy Palm?s strategy is crystal clear: it wants to bury this small community under legal fees they can?t afford ? and make them give up their resistance. If banks like ICBC continue business as usual, we won?t be able to move out of coal in time to keep the science-backed 1.5?C warming limit within reach. You?ve taken action with us before, now we?re counting on you again to strengthen our campaign. Will you tell a friend or two, to take action with us, too? Tell a friend to add their support Most of the money to coal is now channeled through underwriting. Around US$ 1.2 trillion was provided to coal companies through underwriting. ICBC claims that they are an international sustainable leader, but in reality, they are the largest underwriter for coal. It doesn?t make sense. ICBC is also the world?s biggest bank. It must use its potential to be one of the key drivers of the energy transition to clean, community-friendly energy while helping solve energy access problems for many communities. But ICBC is still supporting the coal industry with huge sums of money, and not coming up with a clear timeline to implement China?s national policy to stop constructing new coal plants abroad. We believe ICBC can do better. If you do, too, help us amplify this important news by sharing this with your friends. Onwards, Mahir, on behalf of the Go Clean ICBC team PS. Sign Now Some of the world's most impressive, biodiverse areas are famous, like the Gal??pagos Islands. Others, like the Sargasso Sea, go less remarked upon. But these precious and unique ecosystems all deserve to be better protected, otherwise it leaves the animals who feast, breed, and thrive there in grave danger. The Sargasso Sea is in the Atlantic Ocean, inhabiting a space that's off the coast of the eastern U.S. and north of Bermuda. Its floating sargassum seaweed provides an abundant feeding ground and habitat for many endangered species ? including many species of turtles, fish, and even humpback whales. As Dr. Sylvia Earle, former chief scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has said, the Sargasso Sea is "the golden rainforest of the ocean." But because the Sargasso Sea largely lies outside of any one country's jurisdiction, countries have been slow to protect the marine life there. Overfishing, pollution, and climate change are combining to severely threaten species that migrate through this sea. The government of Bermuda is aware of this and has been trying to drum up support for international action. If countries don't cooperate to take action fast, this precious and unusual haven for biodiversity could disappear. Luckily, we can learn from the exciting and bold example set by the Ecuadorian government, which just announced new safeguards for sharks, turtles, and other marine animals near the Gal??pagos Islands. One of its main plans is to crack down on overfishing and create a protected underwater "highway" for animals to safely swim in. The animals living in and passing through the Sargasso Sea need a similar solution. One of Malaysia?s largest timber and palm oil corporations is logging on Indigenous land in Borneo without consent and decimating endangered gibbon, clouded leopard and pangolin habitats. When a local, four-person NGO helped expose the destruction, the timber giant slapped them with a $1.8 million lawsuit to silence them! We know it won?t end there. The family that owns this company is worth $400 million ? and has a history of using legal bullying to shut down forest defenders to protect its profits. It just needs to bankrupt the SAVE Rivers NGO with an expensive lawsuit to shut down the campaign. That?s enough to continue its unpermitted logging operations. The State Dept. announced Monday that the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv will be temporarily relocated away from Ukraine?s capital city because of the threat posed by a potential Russian invasion that could begin ?at any time? in the coming days. b.. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that he and his team have been reviewing the security situation in Ukraine and ?are in the process of temporarily relocating our Embassy operations in Ukraine from our Embassy in Kyiv to Lviv due to the dramatic acceleration in the buildup of Russian forces.? Blinken added: ?These prudent precautions in no way undermine our support for or our commitment to Ukraine. Our commitment to Ukraine?s sovereignty and territorial integrity is unwavering. We also continue our sincere efforts to reach a diplomatic solution, and we remain engaged with the Russian government following President Biden?s call with President Putin and my discussion with Foreign Minister Lavrov. The path for diplomacy remains available if Russia chooses to engage in good faith. We look forward to returning our staff to the Embassy as soon as conditions permit.? a.. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told House lawmakers in a briefing that only 22 personnel remained at the Kyiv Embassy as of Monday morning and the only American military personnel remaining in the country are part of the Embassy?s security detail. b.. Defense and intelligence officials have been concerned that if Russia launches a full-scale invasion of Ukraine with the more than 130,000 troops it has massed along Ukraine?s border, including in neighboring Belarus, the capital of Kyiv may face Russian air and missile attacks that could precede ground combat or an encirclement and siege. c.. The U.S. is joining several other Western governments that have temporarily relocated their embassy from Kyiv to Lviv, as Australia, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands have all made the same decision. d.. Lviv is a Ukrainian city with more than 700,000 residents that?s located about 340 miles west of Kyiv and is only 43 miles away from the Polish border. The State Dept. has recommended that Americans evacuating Ukraine do so by using the Polish border, where they will be required to show proof of vaccination in addition to their U.S. passport. e.. Aside from Poland, other options for Americans evacuating Ukraine include traveling west to Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. Moldova is another option, although Americans are discouraged from entering that country through the breakaway region of Transnistria, where the U.S. Embassy has limited access and Russia?s military has deployed troops to support the separatists. Tell Germany's new government to put people before profits, and stop blocking the pandemic patent waiver. Sign the petition More than 5 million people have died because of Covid, many of those needless deaths because of Big Pharma?s deadly patent monopoly on vaccines and treatments. Germany is a big blocker of the TRIPS waiver ? a proposal that would allow Covid vaccine patents to be shared which would help speed up the manufacturing of life-saving treatments. But with a newly formed government in Germany, there's an opportunity for you to help change the course of this pandemic for good. An internal battle is playing out in the new German Government right now between politicians in the pockets of Big Pharma and politicians who support the life-saving waiver. Now?s our chance to back the pro-waiver politicians and give them the strength and confidence to act! Tell the German Government to end the vaccine deadlock and support the life-saving Covid TRIPS waiver. The European and African Union Summit is happening right now. Both continents want to discuss how to work together to increase access to Covid vaccines and treatments. Whilst some countries are up to giving people their 4th Covid vaccination, only 12% of Africa?s population has been able to get two vaccinations. And until everyone everywhere is vaccinated, there will always be a risk of new and more dangerous variants of Covid emerging. The new German Government is driven by their image as the leader of Europe and the helping hand to all countries. That?s why this is our chance to really shine the spotlight on Germany and pressure the government to prioritise people?s health and help end this pandemic by lifting the vaccine patents. Add your voice demanding the German Government stop supporting Big Pharma?s deadly patent monopoly. Our community has already come together and convinced the Australian Government to backflip and support the Covid TRIPS waiver. And over 100 other countries already support the waiver including the US, France, Italy and Spain. In order for the waiver to become a reality the European Union must support the waiver too, and Germany is in an influential position to make that a reality. Let?s make sure the newly formed German Government puts people?s health before the profits of Big Pharma too. Officers pulled grandparents, parents, and children from bed and assaulted them, then quickly destroyed the home and everything in it, leaving 18 Palestinians homeless. For decades, Israel has done this again and again, demolishing Palestinian homes to build settlements. Until now. As Israel?s #1 trading partner, the EU has the leverage to stop the destruction. But so far, they?ve failed to do it. So tomorrow, a group of international law experts are launching a new European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) to force the EU to end trade with all illegal settlements. All we need to do is help them gather 1 million signatures and the EU will be required to consider the ban. It will entail tremendous effort ? everything from canvassing door to door to a massive online ad campaign. But we?ve done it before and can do it again. Vladimir, can you chip in to power the signature campaign and finally pressure Israel to end its illegal settlements? If you?ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately. Donate $3 now Donate another amount It couldn?t be clearer that Israel's incessant land-grabbing and displacement of Palestinian communities is illegal under international law. And without consequences for its actions, the Israeli government will continue to raze Palestinian homes. That's why this ECI is so important -- if we can stop the EU from trading with all illegal settlements, it will force Israel to return to the negotiating table to finally restore Palestinians? rights. Here?s what we have to do: gather one million signatures from more than seven European countries. The process for collecting them is burdensome, and then they all need to be reviewed to make sure each and every signature is legitimate. The good news is we?ve done this before as part of our work to stop dangerous pesticides and save the bees ? and we won. Now we can do it again. Only voting-age EU citizens are eligible to sign the initiative, but the campaign to collect the signatures can be funded by anybody, anywhere. That's why we're counting on you, Vladimir -- will you stand up for the rights of the Palestinian people and chip in today? As countries are opening up there are reasons to be optimistic and we look forward to inspiring discussions and increasing cooperation in the region. While we have seen a massive shift towards online meetings, seminars and conferences during the pandemic we can now see signs from our funded projects that physical meetings are taking place or are being planned. This is hopeful for relations between the countries and people of the Baltic Sea region. However, we have all also come to see the benefits of meeting online at times. We will continue our initiative "SI Baltic Sea Sessions ? sharing results, shaping the region" online with a session focusing on energy efficiency. If you work on energy efficiency we welcome you to join our session to connect with others in the region and find out about their work! On 17 March 2022, we will launch a call within a new grants programme for cooperation between Sweden and Russia. In early March we also open for applications to the training programme SAYP targeting young professionals who want to deepen their knowledge about modern sustainable governance. Book Banning is a Classic Sign of Authoritarianism. Stop Censoring Books! Sign Now Banning books is nothing new in the United States. For decades, people attempting to preserve the status quo and prevent progress toward racial, sexual, or gender liberation have worked to ban a variety of texts from local schools and libraries. But the pace at which book banning is now happening across the U.S. is uniquely alarming, and frankly, reminiscent of authoritarian regimes of the past. Last fall, the American Library Association said that it received a whopping 330 reports of book challenges, an "unprecedented" number given that a single challenge can include multiple books. Entire political campaigns are being waged to prevent certain topics from coming up in schools, including those about gender identity, sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community, and racial justice. Book banning is quite notoriously a strategy of political repression, and is often used to silence minority groups. So why is the "land of the free" experiencing a wave of book bans across so many states? In a country that supposedly values freedom of speech, it's chilling to see book censorship reach such fever-pitch levels. Sign the petition to show that you believe books should not be censored or banned at schools or libraries! This new wave of censorship is dangerous and disturbing, and it must end. Hosted in a virtual format, EU-funded event targeted Georgia?s industrial enterprises, bringing them closer to the path of green production, resilience, and green growth. The overall purpose of the conference was to showcase and promote the resilience of Georgian industries in their green transition by using the RECP methodology, giving Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) an opportunity to discover additional tools and programmes that support them in becoming more environmentally friendly. It also recognized and promoted the success stories of the companies and experts who participated in the RECP Training Programme, implemented in the country by UNIDO under the EU4Environment Action. The event was a topically rich, diverse, and cross-sectional one, encompassing various sectors of the economy (private/business, executive/Government, banking/financial). The conference included speakers from various fields of work and engagement (members of enterprises, businesses, government, academia, environmental agencies and energy experts). Overall, more than 70 participants (with additional viewers watching the event on social media) tuned in for over five hours to discuss, share experiences, and learn more about the green transition of businesses and industrial enterprises in the country. Examples were presented by several SMEs who took part in UNIDO?s RECP Training Programme as Demonstration Companies. They ranged from food production (eggs, juice, gem, fried fruits, cheese, wine) to construction materials (concrete, asphalt) and even bio-fuel, and plastic. During the closing ceremony, these companies, together with the RECP Experts who were trained to assess, monitor, and guide them, were awarded with certificates of participation in the RECP Program. In total, 13 experts and 10 SMEs were acknowledged. Representatives from the Government-supported grant and investment programmes, from the Rural Development Agency, Enterprise Georgia, as well as TBC Bank also joined a session dedicated to financial opportunities and the success stories of green industries, moderated by the OECD. Background EU4Environment Action, funded by the European Union, aims to support Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to preserve and better use their natural capital, increase people's environmental well-being, and grasp new development opportunities. With a budget of some EUR 20 million for all six countries, EU4Environment is carried out with implementation support by five international partners: OECD, UNIDO, UNEP, UNECE and the World Bank Group. This Animal-Killing Contest Rewards People who Gun Down Small, Innocent Animals Sign Now "Killing contests" are heartbreaking, disturbing tournaments in which hunters compete to see who is "best" at spilling the most amount of blood and butchering the most animals possible. The Eastern U.S. Predator Calling Championship in Virginia is one such grisly event. According to several undercover investigations by the Humane Society of the United States, some competitors even wield AR-15 guns as they hunt their innocent, defenseless prey. One investigator said it left critters' "brains blown out or their guts hanging out." The Championship contest awards teams prizes for killing the smallest, heaviest, or most number of animals in any given species category. Those prizes include straight-up trophies, belt buckles, and even $25,600 for "winners." In 2022's contest, 127 teams competed, butchering a total of around 590 coyotes and dozens of foxes. The littlest fox slaughtered during the tournament was a slight 6.8 pounds, which is the size of a very small house cat or little dog. This sadistic violence serves no real purpose, other than bringing sadistic glee in overpowering a smaller animal and causing its sad, violent death. Virginia legislators were considering banning these mass-killing "games," but chose not to. They must reconsider that move. Sign the petition to demand Virginia state lawmakers pass a bill to prohibit stomach-churning "killing contests!" Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Protecting Earth protectors - How to ensure that environmental defenders can play their role freely and safely UNEA 5.2 - GREEN TENT EVENT Date: 28 February 2022, 3:30-4:45 pm GMT+3 (Nairobi) Venue: Green Tent (press room) @UNEA5.2 + Zoom (hybrid) Link to webinar: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87367157889?pwd=cTFiVWtzS0Q4VHlhbnl1VUswcXprdz09 Webinar ID: 873 6715 7889 - Passcode: 706645 Co-organisers: European Environmental Bureau, Global Witness, Earthworks, WECF, Reacci?n Climatica (Bolivia), PHE Consortium (Ethiopia), Norwegian Forum for Environment and Development, NGO Major Group, Women Major Group Rationale: Environmental defenders are increasingly under threat in many places around the world. Individuals and groups who strive to protect the environment and to defend human rights relating to the environment are regularly harassed and silenced, subjected to intimidation lawsuits, restricted by repressive regulation and orders, arrested, attacked and even killed. In its latest report, Global Witness documented the killing of 227 land and environmental activists in 2020 for defending their land and the planet, the highest number ever recorded. The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2) focusses on strengthening action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Environmental defenders address the worsening of the climate crisis, resist ever expanding resource extraction and exploitation and seek to protect frontline communities from deforestation, land grabbing and pollution linked to mining, dams, logging, large-scale agribusiness and other industrial activities. They uphold the rights of Indigenous Peoples, farmers and peasants, forest dwellers, women and local communities. They fight for long-term sustainability for communities against short-term profits for a few. This makes them crucial actors in realising the core principles of the 2030 Agenda. This Green Tent event strives to raise awareness of government representatives and civil society gathering at and around UNEA 5.2 on how increasing pressures on environmental defenders threaten peace, human rights and environmental protection and limit our opportunities to achieve long-term sustainability. The event takes stock and gives space to experiences from different world regions. It discusses with experts from around the globe which measures are needed to ensure that environmental defenders can play their roles freely and safely. Stop patents on fruits, vegetables and seeds! We fought for years to save our food and stop patents on seeds, and we won. But companies like Bayer-Monsanto and Carlsberg are manipulating the rules and cancelling our win. Let?s defend what we won! Tell our ministers to clarify the rules once and for all. SIGN NOW Hi, A handful of corporations own our food. [1] They decide what farmers can grow and how much we have to pay for it. Giant companies like Bayer-Monsanto and Carlsberg can do this because they patent our seeds: from melons and tomatoes to barley used to make beer. [2] We campaigned for five years to get the office which decides on patents (the European Patent Office ? EPO), to ban patents on plants and animals. And we won! [3] But companies are cancelling our win by taking advantage of where the rules are not 100% clear. [4] All it would take to block these companies is for ministers to make patent rules watertight. The very rules they put in place thanks to public pressure from people like us. And we know we can do this because this time around, our community is even stronger. We also have 50 organisations joining the fight, including local breweries from across Europe. Together let?s call our ministers to schedule an official conference and take bold decisions that will stop companies from manipulating the rules. Add your name now! Stop Patents on Seeds The greed of the likes of Bayer-Monsanto and Carlsberg is threatening the future of thousands of farms. They?re fighting tooth and nail to claim ownership of dozens of crops - like the barley used to make beer and feed animals. Last year, 55 million tonnes of barley were grown in Europe. [5] Because anyone was free to grow seeds like these, local farmers could support their families and keep our shelves stocked with fresh products at fair prices. And this is why we need to keep going to make sure the rules are watertight and stop patents on seeds once and for all. Stop companies from controlling our food We got the EPO to listen to us through a huge petition, various protests including in Munich at the Oktoberfest beer festival, and by dressing as screaming vegetables or delivering empty beer bottles outside the patent office. [6] Now we are even stronger than before with more than 50 organisations (including local breweries!) on our side. This time, we need our ministers who work on patents to listen. They have the power to block companies that are trying to manipulate the rules. To do so, they need to decide in an official conference. But they won?t do anything unless they feel the pressure. Call on our ministers to schedule the conference and stop patents on seeds! Sign now. Thank you for being part of this, David (London), Giulio (Rome), Olga (Bologna) and the entire WeMove Europe team References: [1] Today, only 10 corporations own about 75 % of the international seed market. Message-ID: <3CFA221FDC414046A4ADF4A0B73FDB6E@evol.sp.ru> But there are still dangerous gaps in state protections. A California Court Said Gray Wolves Should Still Be Protected Under the Endangered Species Act, But Some States Can Still Kill Too Many Wolves Sign Now In a huge victory for gray wolves, a California court just struck down the awful 2020 decision to remove their endangered species protection status at the federal level. This is an amazing step forward, but unfortunately, the areas where wolves are most under attack -- Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho -- are not included in this court decision. Heartbreakingly and ironically, these states are also where the bulk of U.S. wolves reside, and kill quotas can be as high as 90% of the already vulnerable population. Wolves in these states were actually officially delisted in 2009, and it was left up to decision-makers at the state level to manage and protect them. This has been devastating, resulting in overhunting, breaches of Tribal nations' rights, and insidious loopholes that allow the killing of wolves that cross state lines. On top of that, we know that the Montana governor himself sidestepped the law for a chance to murder a wolf in 2021. So how can we expect state legislatures to properly manage wildlife populations when their leaders are so committed to illegally killing innocent animals? The recent California ruling was a crucial step in the right direction, and still helps gray wolf populations overall. But we must protect these innocent animals where they need it the most desperately, and the best way to do that is by fully relisting them in every state under the Endangered Species Act. Sign the petition now to put pressure on the Department of the Interior to protect ALL gray wolves! Thank you, Lauren Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Tanks and troops have also begun invading. Putin has violated international law and multiple ceasefires in pursuing these attacks and invasions. The situation is continuing to evolve, but so far we do know this is a war that Russia is initiating on multiple fronts, including military aggression, disinformation, and even cyber-attacks. Experts are calling this a "hybrid war," in that it's being fought both on the ground and online via social media and news outlets. In essence, Putin is attempting to use disinformation as a key part of his battle strategy in order to justify his unlawful violence, woo more supporters to his cause, and to make it harder for experts and civilians alike to fully grasp the reality of what's happening. With the escalating conflict over Ukraine, our work to call for the abolition of war seems ever more pertinent. In trying times like these, it feels especially important for us to come together in solidarity, unifying our collective call for demilitarization and nonviolence. Our "Water & War" film festival from March 15-22 will provide that opportunity for international networking and discussion, as we watch and learn about the human and environmental impact of war and militarism worldwide, and the stories of those who are standing up to resist it. This year?s ?Water & War? theme explores the intersection of militarism & water, survival & resistance, in the lead-up to #WorldWaterDay on March 22. A unique mix of films explores this theme, from PFAS pollution on a military base in Michigan and the infamous U.S. Navy's Red Hill fuel leak in Hawai?i poisoning groundwater, to Syrian war refugees fleeing violent conflict by boat to Europe and the story of the assassination of Honduran Indigenous water activist Berta C?ceres. Get tickets! Day 1 of the festival on Tuesday, March 15 at 7:00pm Eastern Daylight Time launches with a discussion of the sweeping water contamination caused by U.S. military bases worldwide with screenings of No Defense & The Empire Files' A Battle for Water in Hawai?i. The post-film discussion will include Craig Minor, Tony Spaniola, Mikey Inouye, and other special guests TBA. Day 2 on Saturday, March 19 at 3:00pm Eastern Daylight Time features a screening of the film The Crossing, with director George Kurian. A rare, firsthand account of one of the most dangerous journeys of our time, this timely, nail-biting documentary follows the grueling plight of a group of Syrian refugees as they cross the Mediterranean Sea and travel across Europe. The panel discussion will feature director George Kurian and Niamh N? Bhriain, coordinator of the Transnational Institute?s War and Pacification Programme. Day 3, the festival finale on #WorldWaterDay (Tuesday, March 22 at 7:00pm Eastern Daylight Time), features Berta Didn?t Die, She Multiplied!, a celebration of the life and legacy of Honduran Indigenous, feminist, and environmental activist Berta C?ceres. The film tells the story of the Honduran military coup, the assassination of Berta, and the victory in the Indigenous struggle to protect the Gualcarque River. >From Flint to Standing Rock to Honduras, the water is sacred and the power is in the people. Message-ID: ! UN Global Climate Action 28 February 2022 High Level Climate Champions Newsletter A Warm Welcome to the COP27 UN Climate Change High-Level Champion! We are delighted to welcome Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, the new UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for Egypt, and look forward to building on the groundswell of climate action seen at COP26. Dr. Mohieldin is an economist with more than 30 years of experience in international finance and development. He is an Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund and has been the United Nations Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda since February 2020. The role of the High-Level Champion was created in 2015 at COP21 in Paris to help realise the ambitions of governments to lower carbon emissions and build resilience to climate change. The Champions specifically bridge the work of governments with the many voluntary and collaborative actions taken by cities, regions, businesses, investors and civil society. Resilience in an Era of Climate Change Today?s latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report confirms unequivocally that ever more extreme heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and other impacts caused by climate change are endangering people?s health, safety, jobs and livelihoods. The research, from the world?s top climate scientists, finds that the world faces ?unavoidable multiple climate hazards? over the next two decades, with global warming to 1.5?C. The weather extremes we are already experiencing are exposing millions of people to acute food and water insecurity, especially in Africa, Asia, Latin America and on small islands in the Arctic. Cities are at particular risk, holding more than half the world?s population, it finds. Public health, lives and livelihoods, as well as homes, energy and transport systems and other critical infrastructure are increasingly affected by heatwaves, storms, drought, flooding, rising sea levels and other impacts. These findings make clear the imperative to build systemic resilience to the consequences that are now unavoidable, parallel with and in connection to, rapid emission reductions. With a small, narrowing and challenging window in which to build resilience, it also makes clear the need to make November?s COP27 summit in Egypt a moment that drives climate justice for the countries and communities most at-risk, in Africa and around the world. The bottom line is that, unless emissions are cut faster than governments currently plan to, climate-driven damages will worsen rapidly and parts of the planet will become increasingly uninhabitable. The UN Climate Change High-Level Champions? flagship campaigns ? Race to Resilience and Race to Zero ? are vehicles for tackling these twin objectives, mobilizing businesses, investors, cities and regions to set and implement robust targets for action in the 2020s. The Business of Resilience Climate action has traditionally focused on reducing emissions. Resilience and adaptation only draw about 20% of climate finance, while 80% goes to mitigation, according to the UN. That focus on mitigation may have made sense when the climate crisis was still a far-away threat. But as today?s IPCC report shows, the crisis is already unfolding. In 2022, we have already seen deadly floods in Southeast Africa, the worst drought in 1,200 years in the western US, and a power grid failure caused by record heat in Argentina. Shocks like these ripple across the economy, triggering food and supply chain shortages, infrastructure destruction, death, public health emergencies and the loss of homes and livelihoods. That?s why resilience is everyone?s business. Whether you?re a business, investor, city, region or government, your strategies and investments for reaching net zero emissions before 2050 must be rooted in the principle of resilience. Agriculture can become regenerative to improve water retention, soil health and biodiversity. Homes and cities can be fortified against floods and extreme temperatures. And mangroves and forests can be regenerated to protect against rising sea levels, rain and heat. The Race to Resilience partners are working to scale up investment and innovation in this kind of work within the 2020s. Among them, Scale for Resilience, aims to provide 3 million smallholder farmers with access to nature-based solutions, and the conditions to finance them. It uses digital communications tools to assess and report a smallholder?s needs in relation to climate change, and finance the right nature-based solutions. BFA Global, a consulting firm, has created a multi-agency taskforce with a digital finance framework that enables vulnerable communities to anticipate, adapt and build resilience to the physical impacts of climate change. DARAJA, meanwhile, is innovating the use of data, telecommunications and local media to improve weather and information services, including early warning systems for extreme weather for urban areas. Its proven model has created inclusive city-community forecasting and early warning services, providing information directly to users in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It?s also being piloted in Kingston, Jamaica. Reminder: Call for inputs for the first global stocktake Deadline end of February The global stocktake of the Paris Agreement is a process designed to assess the world?s collective progress towards achieving the purpose of the agreement and its long-term goals every five years. As part of the first global stocktake, the chairs of the UNFCCC?s Subsidiary Bodies opened a call last September for Parties and non-Party stakeholders to submit their inputs before the end of February 2022. Further details on how to do so can be found here. In Case You Missed It a..
