The 1,500 km long tourist megaproject “Maya Train” is set to bulldoze its way through the last remaining forests of southern Mexico -- despite serious human and environmental rights concerns.
Now, a local activist group in Mexico, Kanan Human Rights, have a plan to stop this: they are taking the Maya Train to court! Though they have won some of their appeals, they are facing some major roadblocks as federal courts don't want to talk about human rights violations.
This is how you can help -- Kanan wants the most authoritative court in Mexico to take the case, as it can do a much deeper analysis.
Kanan is convinced that the Mexican Supreme Court will affirm what we already know: that the Maya Train violates the rights of Indigenous Peoples', campesinos, and various local communities, as well as a long list of environmental rights.
Sign here to tell the Mexican Supreme Court to take up the Maya Train case.
Officially, the construction of the train requires an Environmental Impact Assessment -- but Kanan noticed serious irregularities in the assessment process, which makes the assessment incomplete and inapplicable. For example, the information disclosed to the public was incomplete. There was neither mention of environmental damages to the cenotes nor of the conservation and soil restoration programs.
Kanan Human Rights has filed an appeal for review of the sentence -- and they want it to be resolved by the highest court in Mexico: the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.
This is not the first time the SumOfUs Community supports a court case and wins it. Together we helped Maxima Acuna stop Newmont Mining's mine development in Peru. Her heroic efforts won her the Green Nobel Prize.
Today, we can come together and put an end to the harmful Maya Train project. The more signatures we get, the more likely it is the Court will accept taking the case.
Will you sign here so that Mexico's highest court will review the Maya Train case, and we can win?
