                        At the end of a week of global awareness-raising (and the end of a long day) this was snapped in Stockholm… Greta, Andreas & friends joined many taking action across Europe and beyond to raise awareness of the need to criminalise ecocide.                               Iceland:
                              Last month, an Ecocide resolution was submitted to Parliament calling for support for an international crime of ecocide as well as national ecocide legislation, with cross party support from Pirate Party, Liberal reformation, Social Democrats and Left Greens.

                              Stockholm+50 Youth Task Force:
                              The official first draft of the Global youth position paper for the UN Stockholm+50 meeting (June 2022) is now published, compiled by the S+50 Youth Task Force. This paper contains 34 policies that the Task Force has put together following global consultations, and the first demand is for ecocide law.

                              5th April 

                              Spain:
                              The Congress of Deputies has given the green light to a Popular Legislative Initiative assigning legal status to the Mar Menor, Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon. The vote triggers the process to pass a law granting the lagoon its own rights, making it the first European ecosystem to be protected in this way. This legislative move could pave the way towards a complementary protective criminal law i.e. a crime of ecocide.

                              8th April 

                              EU:
                              EU European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has publicly declared that “recognition of ecocide as an international crime is crucial for tackling environmental offences.” The Committee believes ecocide should be addressed directly in the substance of the revised EU Directive on improving protection of the environment through criminal law.
